6 Growth Transport Research & Development the urban footprint getting around future living Townsville is now a city of over a million people. It has grown significantly on the back of tourism, its beautiful location, the tropical climate, and its world renown in the areas of research and development, and of course, as the Gateway to Asia and the rest of Australia. Trade with Asia has become a defining feature of the economy, facilitated by the new Port, International Airport at Bohle, the new commerce hub at Rowes Bay, and the Tropical Research and Education Centre. To accommodate the growing population, city planning wisely limited the urban footprint and concentrated growth around a few major hubs, each of which is focussed on a strategic sector of Townsville s new economy. The hubs are multi-functional and provide an interconnected network of employment, transport, commerce, entertainment, education, agriculture and residential city life. Tourism now attracts people in the millions, all year round, flocking to the major cultural and sporting events that Townsville offers the world including the unique Great Barrier reef, island adventures and conservation holidays, motor racing, and the super yachts. CBD Growth Hub» The heart of the city for retail, local business, and entertainment Live and work in the centre of town» Walk to NORTHBANK - the new waterfront district for ocean front outdoor recreation, marinas, restaurants and opulent lifestyle.» The GRANDSTRAND, still the best place to go jogging, enjoy a picnic, and find some shade under the massive figs» CENTRAL RIVERSIDE PARKLANDS - The old railway yards is now a magnificent inner city parkland open space Rowes Bay Airport Growth Hub» A dynamic new BUSINESS HUB utilising the existing airport as a centre for commerce especially with Asia, and providing venues for conventions, entertainment and business within the airport hub.» Nearby a new SPORTING AND EVENTS arena caters to future international sporting events, games and major sponsorships such as motor racing.» The CONVENTIONS CENTRE, located on the waterfront edge of the airport hub, delivers world class facilities for commercial and conference events. Research and Education Growth Hub» The JAMES COOK UNIVERSITY growth hub will be the centre of research and development for the region, focusing on tropical medicine, strategies for future food and energy production, future liveability and survival and climate technologies. Bohle Airport Growth Hub» The Defence forces have moved out to the new Bohle growth hub which includes a new international airport.» The airport and defence industries also provide a major source of employment.» Bohle Airport links Townsville with the rest of Australia by supersonic aircraft. Townsville is now a significant hub for transport, servicing its population of over 3 million, as well as the rest of the world, in particular the south east Asian commercial market. Supersonic jet travel gets us to and from South East Asia in around an hour, and brings business and commercial trade from the north. We are now able to connect with the rest of Australia in short time frames, encouraging business and tourism. The new international transit hub near Bohle is accessed quickly from the CBD area, and provides a major source of employment. In the CBD, The Artery is the quick link around town. This elevated light rail system connects the main growth hubs efficiently, and also provides residential accommodation, retail and commerce, urban agriculture, and renewable energy production. For the most part, The Artery is built over the existing trunk collector road corridor. The spaces under are still used as roads and pedestrian use, as well as greenhouse and hydroponic farming. The Artery» Elevated light rail transit link, pedestrian corridor and medium rise buildings» Combining urban agriculture, energy renewal, waste recycling» Employment and commerce High Speed Transit Corridor» High speed rail connects Townsville with the rest of Australia» Provides a rapid link between airports and growth areas.» Personal transport modules on magnetic grid network The New Port» The port has moved to a new site and has freed up valuable land near the CBD for residential, entertainment, open space and transit uses, as well as improving visual amenity and conflict of use. As the greatest tropical city in Australia, Townsville is now the go to place in the southern hemisphere for development of strategies for future liveability. The region has become the centre of research and development for tropical medicine, climate change, dealing with natural disasters, building technologies, new agriculture and aquaculture, and renewable energy sources and production. The James Cook University has become world renowned for leading the way in these strategies, and is a major source of income and employment. The mining boom has long since ceased to be, and how we live in the future is the key focus of this sector of Townsville s economy. Climate change» Sea level rise 0.8m in next 100 years» Infrastructure and building technologies to address increased weather events» Natural disaster funding and management Energy» Renewable energy sources incorporated within built form» Solar, wind and water generated sources Water» Desalination plants» Water generated within urban footprint Environment» Magnetic Island conservation zone» Gateway to SE Asia and international areas» Sustainable access to the reef and local islands» Incorporate continuous open space network with urban footprint Research and development» JCU major growth hub - a key element of the future Townsville» Focus on tropical medicine treatment /prevention» Future technologies research» Climate change strategies Agriculture» Vertical urban farms within new built form» Hydroponic farming in greenhouses under The Artery» Aquaculture as a new industry a design for future Townsville by Vee Design : 9point9 Architects : Milford Planning : Meter : Szczepan Urbanowicz
