3 Stephen Phillips J.P. Presidents Report Jun 2013 Volume 15 Issue 3 Dear Members JP Clinics In the last newsletter I invited members who were interested in helping with the establishment of new clinics at the South Christchurch Library (also known as the Beckenham Library) and Rangiora to contact Dick Johns or Stan Hackwell respectively. Regretfully I omitted to note their contact details. Dick can be contacted on or and Stan can be contacted on or We are particularly looking for more members willing to be rostered to provide a clinic at the South Christchurch Library, so if you are available please contact Dick. Sustainability of the clinics is of course very important and given the success of existing clinics (and requests for more) we are reviewing future direction. We are likely to settle on four in the City (east, south, north and then west), plus Rangiora. The Council will consider this further at its June meeting. Southern Regional Conference Accompanying this newsletter are details for the conference we are hosting on 31 August and 1 September. We have endeavoured to establish an interesting and informative programme. Members are warmly invited to register for the conference. Early registrations are recommended as numbers may have to be limited. Education/Training We had a great turnout at the training session on 27 April and I encourage members to attend the up coming sessions scheduled for 20 July in the city and at Darfield on 24 August. Mid Winter Dinner Elsewhere in this newsletter are details of the Association s mid winter luncheon which will be held at the Papanui RSA on Sunday 7 July. These are great events and are well worth attending. Kind regards Stephen Phillips J.P. President Page 2

5 2013 LOCAL BODY ELECTIONS Electionz.com is again looking to establish a vote processing centre in the Christchurch area for the 2013 local body elections. As usual JPs are required to witness the processing to ensure voting trends are not released during the processing period. They are not required to assist with the processing, but can be assigned some tasks if they wish. The appointees (up to six required) will be rostered over the vote processing period from Monday 23 September to Saturday 12 October There will generally be (2) per shift. Electionz.com has yet to finalise the operating times but the indications to date are that the shifts will generally be: 6.30 a.m to 3.30 pm: 10.00am to 6.30 p.m: 6.00 am to noon (Saturday 12 October) Finishing times may be earlier or later depending on quality of mail received. Venue is yet to be confirmed, but likely to be within CCC city limits Parking availability will be confirmed when venue advised Payment is yet to be confirmed. Hourly rate in 2010 was $20.00 (Carrying-out these duties is a function that JPs can be paid) Tea and/or coffee provided: Meals and morning/afternoon teas your responsibility Any enquiries to the Registrar. Applications close with the Registrar on or before19 July 2013 Peter Berry J.P. Registrar *************************************************************************** From the Editors Desk The Westpac Hub Training Building I wish to thank the members who rang me and pointed out that the building shown on our Training and AGM location map in our last newsletter was incorrect. The Google photograph was old and did not show the new building at the ASB Centre, that of the Westpac Hub. A new photo has been sourced and I trust that we are all now aware as to where we meet and train. Oh, Sadly Again! It would seem that that although we ask in nearly every newsletter and electronic publication to advise us when you change your address or other address details, it seems that too many do not advise. When we send you un-connecting newsletters by electronic we get a return referred to as a bounce. When this occurs we look for a reason as to why? We are very aware that communication with you is extremely important and although we try to track and trace it can take considerable time and still we do not get everybody. This problem has increased noticeably due to people relocating or simply forgetting to keep us in the loop. A change to your circumstances, (as does all information) needs to be communicated to the REGISTRAR, not me. I ask that you please note the above and endeavour to help us keep in touch with you. Thank you. Warren Moore J.P. Editor and Webmaster Page 4
6 Ian Hay J.P. EDUCATION The first of the Saturday training sessions was held on the 27 th April 2013 with a great turnout of members. The first session saw the members split into groups to discuss a number of points. The groups were in areas where they live and the questions asked were centred around the future presentation of training, locations of venues, guest speakers, format of training. There was a great response to these and the Education team are reviewing these and will report back to members. The second session was on the Code of Conduct and the Code of Ethics which a number of those attending were unaware of. For those wishing to clarify any points from the session, please refer to the Justice Quarterly, Vol 80, 2011, the Autumn edition, page 4. This will give you a full description of each of the codes. Please refer to our last Newsletter (March 2013, Vol 15 No 2 for a full program detail.)our next training session at the Westpac Hub is on Saturday 20 th July starting at 0900 hours. At our session on the 20th July 2013, we will feed back the results of the Group sessions and we will also be having a guest speaker. There has been a number of new Inductees undertaking the initial Induction training and I would like to thank Bruce Cameron for the time and effort he is putting into this training. H. Ian Hay J.P.
