7 EDITORIAL It is a pleasure to have a part in ensuring that Tane, the former Journal of the Auckland University Field Club, continues to be published. Since 1948, Tane has provided an important publication venue for New Zealand scientists, with its focus on student authors and the natural history of northern New Zealand - particularly the northern offshore islands. The Offshore Islands Research Group (OIRG), founded by ex-field Clubbers to continue their offshore island research interests, agreed in early 1995 to take over the administration and publication of the Journal from the deceased Auckland University Field Club. OIRG members hope that this will be a caretaker role, and that sooner or later the AUFC will be resurrected. There has been no shortage of material on offer for this volume, and we present a pleasing range of papers, the majority of which are based on the offshore islands theme. The Editorial committee intends to reinstitute annual publication of the Journal. Thank you for your continued support of Tane; its future is as much dependent on a solid subscription base as it is on an editorial committee to see it through the press. Anthony Wright President Offshore Islands Research Group December 1995
