It also advises of the different approaches taken by local businesses to successfully engage with the event participants and visitors to the region. 2
3 ABOUT THE EVENT WELCOME FROM IRONMAN ASIA-PACIFIC CEO To the athletes, spectators, volunteers, sponsors and local community, get ready for the biggest IRONMAN party Australia has ever seen. This year Toyota IRONMAN Australia turns 30, and the old girl is looking to kick up her heels, to help this celebration we are bringing the best of the old school days of Forster and now Port Macquarie together. The IRONMAN team are thrilled to be back in beautiful Port Macquarie, it s worth noting that last year s event was voted as the best IRONMAN event experience in the world by the athletes, this is quite a feather in the cap of IRONMAN Australia. This honour is testament to everyone that makes the event happen, from the local community to the volunteers. This year in celebration of the events 30th birthday we bring you a host of events in in partnership with the NSW State Government through Destination NSW, the Port- Macquarie-Hastings Council, and the Local Organising Committee. It will be a party not to be missed. While the passage of time has seen many changes at IRONMAN Australia, many things have remained the same. The distance, more than 1800 athletes will cover is still a 3.8km swim, 180km ride and 42.2km marathon, the feat of finishing is still one to be admired, and the support from the community and volunteers is still a highlight of the race. The other constant is Dave Ross, Dave is the only person to have completed every IRONMAN Australia event, so to Dave we say well done and good luck on this, your 30th event. There will be some familiar faces around town as we honour the athletes that have dedicated much of their lives to the iconic event. There are over 150 legends, athletes with 10 or more IRONMAN Australia finishes, competing and the second woman inducted into our Hall of Fame, Teresa Kunaeva will also be on then start line again racing an IRONMAN for the first time since Five time winner Lisa Bentley will also be in town for the birthday celebrations, as will IRONMAN Australia s favourite son, the recently retired, Jason Shortis. With the strong club culture and friendly competition that has evolved over the years in Port Macquarie, we are excited to continue the Australian IRONMAN TriClub Championship. Australia s strongest Triathlon Clubs will be doing everything they can to knock off the holders of the prestigious Ken Baggs Cup, the Penrith Institute of Sport. We look forward to providing an amazing experience for athletes as well as spectators with specially designated Hot Spots on the course offering the best viewing points. Not to mention the family favourite, Port IRON 5km Fun and the very popular IRONKIDS Aquathon. A sincere thank you to all the volunteers who generously give their time and support. Without the volunteer army and the strong local community and business support from across the region, these events are not possible. And finally, to all the athletes joining us from across the country and around the world, good luck. We hope you realise your dreams and have the day of your lives out there. Wishing you a safe and memorable race. Geoff Meyer Chief Executive Officer IRONMAN Asia-Pacific 3
4 EVENT OVERVIEW Established in 1985, TOYOTA IRONMAN Australia remains an iconic global event. The 226km course will see athletes swim 3.8kms in Hastings River, followed by 2 laps along the Pacific Ocean to make up the 180kms bike leg and then run a marathon of 42.2kms in the heart of Port Macquarie. It should come as no surprise that the event is a race that competitors come back to year after year. It will be the tenth year this prestigious event has been held in Port Macquarie. Right in your own backyard athletes will be participating and what further motivation is needed to support their tremendous efforts. There will be approximately 2,000 individuals competing in the event with many trying to win one of the 40 age group qualifying slots to gain entry in to the legendary IRONMAN World Championship in Hawaii. Many other athletes will simply be rising to the personal challenge of completing the course. Spectators can get involved by cheering on the athletes as they push their mind and body for up to 17 hours along the course. Professional athletes start at 6.30am at Hastings River, Food for Less Car Park with age group athletes and teams diving in shortly after and all competitors must cross the finish line at Town Green at 11.45pm. 4

13 GETTING AROUND ON RACE DAY The event will see thousands of spectators arriving in Port Macquarie to cheer on the athletes. Major events such as this calibre cannot be delivered without some impact to the community. To ensure the safety of the public and competitors, temporary changed traffic conditions have to be implemented. TEMPORARY CHANGED ROAD TRAFFIC CONDITIONS It is essential that the event is conducted in a safe manner, therefore, NSW Police and Port Macquarie Hastings Council have approved for temporarily change traffic conditions to apply. The organising committee have again appointed Men At Work, a traffic management consultant to ensure the traffic management planning and implementation minimises impacts wherever possible and to ensure public and competitor safety. During the event, regular road users will need to be aware of the changed traffic conditions and will most likely need to modify their travel routines. If your business is located on or near the course, you will need to consider how the increased number of people and how the road closures and detours in place will affect your business. This booklet has been developed to assist in your planning. 13

23 SHOWCASING YOUR BUSINESS The event will bring substantial and long lasting economic and social benefits, and will deliver national and international exposure to Port Macquarie. Thousands of spectators will be visiting on the day of the event and in the lead up to the event bringing long lasting tourism benefits. There are many opportunities for residents and businesses to participate in the excitement of this world class event. You may like to consider some new ideas to make the most of the thousands of spectators in town. Some considerations include: Operating hours you may like to consider the possibility of extending or changing business hours. For example, if you re a café within the course vicinity, you may like to open earlier than usual on Sunday. Special offers you may like to take the opportunity to offer special deals, tweak your menu or have a sale. Extend normal alfresco you may like to consider extending alfresco areas or provide extra tables and chairs in areas that are expected to be popular spectating points. DECORATE YOUR SHOP WINDOW If you have a business located on or nearby the event course, you may consider taking advantage of the hundreds of spectators who will be along the course. Promotional material will be provided for those wanting to promote a connection with spectators and athletes, many of whom will visit the city ahead of the event. You could produce an attractive shop front by displaying IRONMAN posters or streamers and balloons in the IRONMAN colours. If you wanted to get more creative you could have a Swim-Bike-Run theme.there are many options that can be explored using your own flair and creativity! 23
