I must thank the Delegates, partners and Lionesses who attended the Convention. Several of our delegates joined in the at times robust discussion on some Motions. It is pleasing to report that Motion PNM 16 Lions Skin Cancer Screening Project submitted by District C2 and C1 is now a Category B project. PNM 15 Music Therapy for Nursing Home Residents and PNM 17 Story Dogs were eliminated on a ballot vote for Cat B status as there were only 3 slots this year but 5 were applied for. Constitutional Notice of motion CNM7 the Establishment of the Lions Advisory Board interestingly received a majority of votes but not the two thirds required, so the Motion was lost. The C2 Amendment to the Motion was also lost. Notice of Motion CNM9 to change the Colour of the Dress Shirt to White was lost. Constitutional Notice of CNM10 which was to allow PDG to stand for Council Chairperson for 3 years was also lost. General Notice of Motion GNM20 regarding membership kits for Leo Clubs Program was lost as it was felt the Sponsoring clubs could provide the extras needed. All other motions were carried and Notice of Motion CNM 8 was deleted. It was pleasing to note that we now have a Lions Awareness Day allocated to the first Saturday in March. This will allow all clubs the opportunity to plan projects and activities well in advance with Lions MD to provide free PR materials to Clubs. The Council Chairperson for is DG Chris Howard from N2. Canberra was successful in its bid for the 2021 MD Convention. Members are reminded that the 2020 MD Convention is being held in Adelaide and will be jointly hosted by District C 1 and District C 2. The 2017 Leo of the Year winner was Leo Matthew Boggan from N Districts and the Public Speaking winner was Leo Kieren Azzopardi from the V Districts. I would ask all sponsoring clubs of Leos to please nominate a Leo for 2018 as this is the second year we have not had an entrant. The Youth of the Year winner was Tom Rockliff from District T1 with the Public Speaking winner being Lucy Witherdin from the N3 District. Congratulations to Claire Noack, C Districts State Winner. Claire, who was sponsored by the Lions Club of Mitcham, spoke on the Youth Quake. Claire will now tour with all State winners and will be a wonderful ambassador for our Clubs. The Syd Packham Award was won by the Lions Club of Waikerie and the Zone 13 Clubs. They submitted the 100 years Centennial newspaper lift out, and I know Lion Joe District Governor Judy Glastonbury and husband Frank Whinnen Vikor deserves a special mention for all his efforts in the production of this wonderful lift out. Congratulations to Peter Pignotti on receiving an International Presidents Award for his involvement in the Lions Centennial Park legacy project. All Zone 11 Clubs and the Lioness Club worked together to establish a wonderful park for the Community which include es a Memorial Wall for past members. Until next month District Governor Judy

Volume 5 Issue 11 Mt Barker Conquering the Summit For seven years the Lions Club of Mt. Barker (SA) has conducted an event for runners and walkers called Conquer the Summit, referring to an 11 km. event from the Mt. Barker township to the top of Mount Barker itself. The bulk of the proceeds are donated to Operation Flinders, a body devoted to keeping local disadvantaged or disengaged youth thinking of a positive future rather than continuing as they were. Groups of youths go on an eight day confidence-building trek through the Flinders Ranges. Other proceeds are used to support local projects. This year Lions entered a partnership with the Mt. Barker Rotary Club and the South Australian Roadrunners Club which meant that, while local entries were still very strong, there were also more runners and walkers from Metropolitan Adelaide. In all about 280 entries were received for the April 12 th event although about 30 No Boundaries withdrew after the forecast of a 33 degree day. This was still a sizeable increase on previous years The winner of the male section, Bryn Nicholls, was also successful in 2007, this year s time being 41 minutes and 46 seconds, 14 seconds ahead of the runner-up. The female section was taken out by Erin Snelgrove, who is an exchange student from Canada. The first local runner was Justin Cole/ There were also categories for the fastest team and the largest team. Because of great local support, all expenses were covered which meant that all proceeds went directly to the charities. In all the event raised an estimated $15,000 for Operation Flinders. This amount is almost enough to fully fund a team of ten local teenagers to tackle the arduous eight day Operation Flinders programme. a lifechanging experience for many It was felt that the entire event showed the value of cooperation between community groups. The planning from day 1 was harmonious as each group had a lot to offer and their total contributions made for an excellent day Deane Evans For Mt. Barker Lions Submitted This year s organising committee the entire event showed the value of co-operation between community groups We have said before that Where there s a need, there s a Lion When Lions Club of Richmond (C1) heard that 2 students at Kangarilla School had a cardiac problem and might need access to a defibrillator, there was no such thing as a District Boundary. The club jumped in and provided a device for the school The automatic defibrillator can be used by anyone with basic First Aid training and is not just for the 2 students, but for anyone in the local community who might need to use it. Cabinet Secretaries Recognised The acknowledged powerhouse of any district is the Cabinet Secretary. These tireless folk have their finger on the pulse of the district, support not only the District Governor, but the entire District Cabinet Team Page 3 At the Multiple District Convention in Townsville, Council Chairman Malcolm Peters recognised all the Cabinet Secretaries for their excellent work. Here our own tireless Cheyle Pedler received a Certificate of Recognition from Council Chairman Malcolm thanking her on behalf of the Council of Governors.
C2 NEWS 201C DISTRICTS LIONS MAKING A DIFFERENCE Editors note: Congratulations to the Lions Medical Research Foundation - Lions Skin Cancer Screening Program on being adopted as a Category B project until 2021 at Townsville Convention Unit Screens over 5,000 Since its launch in February 2017, the C Districts Mobile Skin Cancer Screening Unit has travelled from Mt Gambier to Darwin and Ballarat to Wudinna and screened over 5,000 people for free. Of those 5,000 more than 25% have been referred immediately to their GP or specialist for further examination, a horrifically higher than expected number, because Australia is the skin cancer capital of the world. Two out of every three Australians will be diagnosed with skin cancer. It is the most common cancer affecting young Australians. Early diagnosis has a critical impact on successful treatment because skin cancers can grow rapidly. If a melanoma on the skin s surface is treated, you have a better than 95% chance of a normal life span, but, if not diagnosed and treated, that same melanoma can, in only a few months, grow down into the skin just 4mm it is then odds-on you will die within 5 years. Every day, 6 Australians die from skin cancer. Quite aside from the human cost, the cost to the Australian health system is over $1 billion a year; and to the Australian economy in lost productivity over $2 billion a year. Our C Districts answer is our Mobile Screening Unit, staffed entirely by volunteers, which provides screenings where people live and the screenings are FREE Through early detection and education about the dangers of skin cancers the screenings are saving lives. Delays in diagnosis can and do prove fatal. This alarming rate of referrals of over 25% reinforces the need for promotion of regular skin checks, increased opportunities for people to access skin screening services, and ongoing education about prevention of skin cancer. Our Mobile Unit is helping Australians in SA, NT, and the western edges of NSW and Victoria to fight a fatal disease that is of epidemic proportions. 5 Volume 5 Issue 11 IMPORTANT NEWS FROM LIONS CLUBS INTERNATIONAL REGARDING SEMI-ANNUAL DUES ***NO CREDIT FOR MEMBERSHIP DROPS AFTER SEMI-ANNUAL BILLING FROM 30 JUNE 2018*** The International Board of Directors have agreed to discontinue the practice of issuing credit for membership drops following the release of the semi-annual billing. Board Policy prohibits LCI from issuing membership dues credits due to the lack of submitting timely reporting prior to the dues billing, and the International Board has decided on stricter enforcement of this policy to ensure compliance with Board Policy. Therefore, starting at the close of day June 30, 2018, membership dues credits will no longer be issued. Please update your membership rosters in MyLCI before June 30 to make sure your membership is accurate. Renmark Massive Catering Effort Over a massive weekend in March the Renmark club catered for the National Convention of The Cadillac Club of Australia hosted in their hometown Starting with a welcome BBQ on the Wednesday evening the club set up their marquee and catering trailer in the Big4 Holiday Park and served a hot meal to all the attendees.. The club served the meal at 6.30 and was packed up and gone by 8.30 pm The following day they prepared and served morning tea at Paringa while conventioneers enjoyed watching the opening of the Paringa Bridge On the Friday the team moved catering headquarters to a local Distillery and served a 2 course full roast meal, again serving and packing up in record time. Members took a welcome break on Saturday and Sunday before setting up at the Big4 Holiday Park in the dark of pre-dawn ready to cook a full breakfast for all attendees. Again the event all went precisely to plan, a tribute to the hard working planning team, and the team was cleaned up and back in the shed by 10am which we have to agree is a mammoth effort. Over their 4 day involvement in the event the Renmark Lions managed to raise a profit of $ Well done Renmark. The Convention attendees had nothing but praise for the efforts of the club. This not only raises the profile of Lions in your community, but those in attendance will take back a very favourable image of Lions of Australia as a whole. Page 5
C2 NEWS Lions History Project Since completing my 2016/17 term as District Governor for Lions District C2 I have undertaken the project of writing a book about the history of Lions and Lions Clubs in that geographical area of Australia we currently refer to as Lions Districts C1 and C2. Basically I have identified 3 areas of interest Current Lions Clubs as well as LEO clubs and Lioness Clubs Chartered Lions Clubs, LEO clubs and Lioness Clubs whose charter has since been surrendered. Other associated historical matters Current Lions Clubs etc. There are currently 127 Lions clubs divided between the two Districts. I have requested specific information from all these clubs and am pleased to be able to report that 80% of C1 clubs and 76% of C2 clubs have all responded and provided the requested information for which I am most grateful. Ongoing attempts are constantly being made to acquire the outstanding information but basically it comes down to cooperation and input from member clubs. Closed clubs. In the course of my research I have identified over 100 Lions clubs that were charted but which no longer exist. I have also identified 31 LEO clubs and 28 Lioness Clubs in a similar situation. Whilst I may be able to collate a list of past club officers for all these clubs I have no access to details of their actual chartering. The information I am seeking for each club is:- a) formation date b) charter date c) venue of charter dinner d) who presented charter e) number of charter members and their names f) original charter officers g) the sponsor club. I would be extremely pleased to hear from any member who may have previously been a member of any of these clubs or who knows somebody who was a previous member and who may be able to provide any of these details. Any other relevant historical data relative to any of these clubs would also be appreciated. Other associated historical matters. I am hoping to include some details of major projects undertaken by either District separately or jointly. I have a full list of all District officers covering the entire period since the chartering of the first club in our area being the City of Adelaide Lions Club in 1961 although of course many of the interstate clubs initially included in District C had been chartered well before that date. It is my expectation to make the final publication as complete and detailed as possible but as mentioned above I can only achieve this with members input and cooperation which I am seeking via this article. The following information remains outstanding for current C2 Lions Clubs C2 Charter details only outstanding Lameroo, Merbein, Mt Barker C2 Club officers and charter details outstanding Beachport Rivoli, Buronga Gol -Gol, Darwin Casuarina, Gambier City, Kalangadoo, Mannum, Morgan, Murray Bridge City, Palmerston, Penola, Pt McDonnell, Tintinara, Yulara C2 Club officers and other information outstanding Pinnaroo Any assistance with the provision of this information would be greatly appreciated. Any available information can be ed to me at bandk392@bigpond.com or snail mail to 105/91 Main Road, McLaren Vale, SA Any phone enquiries can be made via Please accept my sincere thanks in advance for any help and information that may be provided. 7 Volume 5 Issue 11 Youth Of The Year STATE FINAL Another great State Final was held at Gumeracha on April 7th. The final was hosted by C1 s Torrens Valley Lions Club. The success of the event is owed entirely to the six amazing candidates. Naturally we all have our own private judging of the Winner but this year, it was anyone s guess the standard was so high. The Judging panel had an extremely tough job. If anyone needs a guest speaker these students are up with the best. Our congratulations to all six candidates and especially to Clair Noack from Mitcham Lions who won both awards. STOP PRESS - Club Secretaries and Club YOTY coordinators take note. There have been several changes to the forms we all use in YOTY. All YOTY forms will be edited and replaced. They include Entry Form Winner s Advisory Form Advice to Timekeepers Student s Entry Form Judge s Guide (3 pages) and there is a 2-page Scoring Sheet to attach. All new forms will also be available shortly on the YOTY website for year. The password to access these documents and certificates will remain the same. This is confidential to your YOTY chairman only and will be given on request or in the handouts by the District Chair. There will no longer be the Participant s Contact details form to access and complete. A good move!!! Ann Hughes State Final jjdging Panel State Finalists Claire receives her State Winner aware from DGE David National Final Claire during her speech DG Judy wishes Claire all the best Best wishes from Mum and Mitcham host club members Hot from the Multiple District Convention in Townsville we congratulate Claire on an outstanding effort in the Youth of the Year National Final. The judges pointed out that the level of competition was so strong that there were only fractions of points separating all 6 entrants, and they really struggled to separate only 1 winner from the group. We know they are all winners and applaud them all for their efforts Page 7 The eventual winner was Tom Rockliff from District T1 with the Public Speaking winner being Lucy Witherdin from the N3 District. Congratulations to them both. The 6 contestants will now travel to the international camp in New Zealand, before visiting the winning contestant s home state of Tasmania to be hosted by Tom s host club. It seems that Tom had joked about them all coming to visit and riding on the tractor, so we hope to see the great photos of that event The 6 State Finalists
C2 NEWS Marion Sporting Scholarships During 2016, the Marion Lions Club (District 201C2) entered into a Partnership with the South Adelaide Basketball Association. With the assistance of a Grant from the Australian Lions Foundation, the Uniforms were presented and the Team This Partnership continues and the Lions Club has recently established a Scholar- Renmark Environmental Project OAKBORE MANAGEMENT PADDOCK Renmark club members have successfully completed the first fox baiting program for this year. They had a good turnout of helpers on each of the three excursions. Members carried out quite a bit of maintenance work on the buildings and infrastructure Oakbore, to keep things in good order for the Lions as well those groups who use it as a base for many research projects. Work completed included pumping water between tanks; cleaning roofs and gutters on the buildings; cleaning of bird bath; checking UHF radio operation; spraying toilet blocks for spiders and bugs on multiple occasion; repaired gutter on shearing shed; modifying and repairing water pipe on sleeping quarter s tank. Unfortunately, the foxes must have really enjoyed their Christmas break, since the amount of baits that were taken was extraordinary. On Oak Bore, 83% of the baits were taken and Yubalia had a 82% take!! This compares to November 2017, when the total taken over both sections was only 59%. It would appear from these figures that we are fighting a losing battle. In total the club laid 242 baits, of which 200 were taken an average of 82.5%. There were a total of 30 people involved and 247 hours in total with members travelling 2,200 kms to complete the project. The Club extended a big thank you to all those Club Members and Friends of Lions who were involved, especially to those who supplied their vehicles. Page 8
Volume 5 Issue Victorian Bushfire Recovery Aid Project Following the Victorian Terang area fires in March, Governor Judy gave consent to a project for clubs collecting tools. The collection of hand tools and garden tools and the like was to support the Victorian Lions in their fire recovery projects, and to assist farmers and tradies get back on their feet as soon as possible pending the settlement of insurance claims. Similar collections after the 2005 Eyre Peninsula Fires and the 2009 Victorian Fires indicated that a short collection period with delivery soon after was the most effective manner in which to tackle the project. In addition, close liaison with the local lions is of vital importance as they know firsthand who is most needy of assistance. Consequently on a wet Saturday 4 weeks after the fire, 2 Ute loads of assorted tools and 2 large tandem trailers similarly loaded travelled to the Terang Caravan Park where the Terang Lions had arranged secure storage. We were met by members of the Terang Lions, incoming District Governor (whose Club is in the same Zone) and the Zone Chairman. In no time the loads had been unloaded and stored and what a selection!! Rakes, shovels, saws, toolboxes, welding sets, ladders, wheelbarrow, spanners and screwdrivers etc, a hardware store would not be so well equipped. A number of clubs contributed to the project and whilst it is understood some may still be collecting, the trip delivered tools collected by: Aberfoyle & District, Mt. Gambier, Gambier City, Kalangadoo, Penola (including the Leos) and McLaren Districts clubs. Much appreciated driver support was provided by members from Keith Lions in the case of the 1400km round trip from McLaren Vale in 2 days. After unloading and partaking in a BBQ lunch followed with a couple of quick presentations and speeches the C2 contingent departed after passing on the best wishes from C2 to our neighbouring District V2 in their fire recovery projects. District V2 advised that they were most appreciative of our support and that a Zone Committee has been formed to determine priorities for recovery including distribution of the tools to those identified as being in most in need to benefit from the tools collected Lions helping Lions helping their communities. Sincere thanks to all those who contributed to the success of this Project. Ian Tonkin (Tonks) McLaren Districts Wherever there s a need there s a Lion Page 9
C2 NEWS Millicent Family Fun Day Geltwood Festival Last year, as the Festival was beginning to fade, the Wattle Range Council approached the Millicent Lions Club with a request to take over the Market Day as part of the Geltwood Craft Festival. Held in April each year the week long festival was becoming too much for the local Retail Traders to keep up. The main focus of the festival is Quilting, and every shop window in the town is filled with beautiful hand made quilts. Each shop is a collection of one artist s work. Hundreds of visitors can be seen walking down the streets viewing the works of art that these quilts are. Like any true Lions, the club donned their yes we can attitude and put together a super successful program last year, trialing fun events like Billy Cart Races, Dunny Roll Tossing, Men s Shed wood turning, food stalls and historical car displays, just some of the many activities that lined the entire length of the main street. Various entertainment was available from a wandering clown to various vocal performers and bands. This year, despite less than wonderful weather first thing in the morning, the team went ahead and the crowds throughout the day were huge and the feedback received has been wonderful. The Club is already planning for next years event and it is sure to be a winner. Page 10
Volume 5 Issue 11 LCIF s US$30 Million Commitment to Gavi is Complete At the 2013 Lions Clubs International Convention in Hamburg, Germany, LCIF made a commitment to Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance, to raise US$30 million to help protect tens of millions of children in the world s poorest countries against measles. If we could accomplish this ambitious goal, these funds would be matched by the Gavi Matching Fund, whose primary contributors are the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and the UK Department for International Development. LCIF is pleased to announce that thanks to the generosity and service of Lions, this goal has been reached, bringing the total amount raised to US$60 million. Thank you, Lions. Impact With support from LCIF and the Gavi Matching Fund, 87.7 million children have been immunized in communities across the world million doses of the potentially lifesaving measles or measles-rubella vaccine has been procured. This means the prevention of 61,000 future deaths. For the first time in known history, the annual measles death rate has declined to less than 100,000 deaths per year. LCIF applauds this achievement, and is proud to have contributed to this success. If you would like to continue to protect children across the world from this terrible disease, please consider making a donation to LCIF by contacting your local Lions Club. 12 C2 NEWS Convention Fun One of the most entertaining moments of Convention is the Mini Roast by the Cabinet Secretaries of the District Governor as the year winds to a close. Governors were presented with T-Shirts with relaxing tropical images and a number of items to assists with their planned relaxation after a busy year as DG. Of course we know that the relationship between District Governor and Cabinet Secretary is vital in the organization of a great district and that is clearly in evidence in our District. Congratulations DG Judy Glastonbury and Cabinet Secretary Cheryle Pedler on another amazing year for our District. They received glasses for a well earned drink, snacks for energy, a little puppy to walk for exercise and a snorkel set for a relaxing swim. Mt Gambier Blue Lake Fencing Lions Club of Mount Gambier recently completed a fence alongside a walkway between the Blue Lake Visitor Centre/Café and the Pioneer Memorial. Working with the Mount Gambier City Council they improvement will keep visitors in the area safe. C1 & C2 Friends Get Together Page 12 One of the fun parts of Multiple District Convention is the District Functions. As has become tradition, both C1 & C2 Districts gathered to share stories and fellowship in the lovely city of Townsville. District Governor Megan from C1 and our DG Judy welcomed delegates and celebrated a number of significant achievements throughout the convention, most specifically the adoption of the joint initiative of the Skin Cancer Screening Unit as a Category B Project. Past International Director Sheryl Jensen accepted an invitation to join our District celebrations and it was lovely to spend time with both Sheryl and Kevin It was nice to relax and chat with members from both districts, sharing ideas and fun.
Volume 5 Issue 11 Remembered with Love At convention we remember with love those Lions, Lionesses, Leo s and partners who are no longer with us. District Governor Judy and DG Elect David placed a candle in memory of the wonderful service given by those members of our district. A special recognition was made by Past International President Barry in memory of our treasured Past International Director Dr Bob Coulthard. Yankalilla Centennial Project A few Yankalilla members were pleased to able to accept an invitation to attend the official opening of the shade covering the open air assembly area at the school today. This is our club's Centennial Legacy Project, and they were proud to help their local school and students to stay sun safe. The club successfully applied for a $9,000 grant from the Australian Lions Foundation (ALF) and contributed the $11,000 balance from their fundraising efforts. The cleverly constructed area comprises a multiuse stage and seating area, which with the addition of the shade, ties neatly into our Skin Cancer Screening Project It is a wonderful initiative that has been warmly received by the school community. Penola Supports Local CFS Page 13 Donation of new Jaws of Life equipment to the Penola CFS by the Penola Lions Club. Presentation evening on Thursday 26th April at which a certificate of thanks was presented to Lions President John Stayte. The CFS demonstrated the power of the new equipment by cutting the doors open on a small car quickly and cutting through the steering wheel to free a driver in an accident situation. Very impressive demonstration of new lighter weight cutters. The Lions donation was a response to a tragic road accident at Penola 18 months ago which claimed the lives of 4 young people as they drove to work one morning
C2 NEWS Victor Harbor & Port Elliot Project Continues The completion of the first stage of The Victor Harbor & Pt Elliot Lions Park moved a step closer with the erection of a fence which members competed in 2 days. Working in conjunction with the local council, this project is also progressing with installation of an irrigation system being well underway and due to be completed soon, with plans for seeding of the area in place. Club Development Seminars Each Year Members of the District Cabinet travel to regional areas to conduct Club Development Seminars. The expertise that those members have is shared with club members attending. There was a great turn out from our Sunraysia and Riverland Clubs Why not make plans to attend the seminars when they are held next year? Meningie and Tailem Bend Challenge Meninge and Tailem Bend Lions Clubs recently took part in a friendly bowls evening. The friendly rivalry evening was cause for much mirth and merriment, and there was lots of discussion about Sheep Stations we hear. There seems to have been a lot of cheating and interpretive score keeping. Congratulations to the winners and losers. It looks like a great time was had by all. Page 14
