This stamp issue is based on a selection of Australian programs, and narrowing down the list to a final five was a near impossible task. The final program selection represents different genres from across all five free-to-air networks, and I hope you will agree that In Melbourne Tonight, Homicide, Dateline, Neighbours and Kath & Kim are a good cross-section from the 50 years. Two of Melbourne s landmarks are the subject of 50 Years On The Melbourne Olympics. The Yarra River and Collins Street were both featured on the Olympic stamps issued in 1956 when Melbourne was a fast growing metropolis in the grip of Olympic fever. The stamps in this issue are presented in se-tenant pairs and pay homage to the host city of the XVI Olympiad. Through three stamps, Christmas 2006 reflects aspects of the traditional Christmas story depicting the Madonna and child, one of the three wise men, and a shepherd boy. Melbourne-based artist Anne Spudvilas captures the essence of her subjects through carefully rendered expressions. The gentle illuminating light conveys a sense of reverence and adoration. Bruce Gyngell, 16 September 1956 The idea of television had been around in Europe and America for decades prior to its introduction into Australia. The war curtailed television s up-take in Australia, but on 16 September 1956 the Australian public was introduced to this remarkable new broadcast medium. This stamp issue celebrates Australian-produced programs. Each of the stamps features a program from across the five decades of Australian television. 7 1 november 2006 During the 1950s, Melbourne was Australia s fastest-growing city. After the hardship and privations of the war years, this period was characterised by the materialism, optimism and innovations of postwar modernity and influenced by the ideas and aesthetics brought to Australia by immigrants leaving war-torn Europe. The Games were the catalyst for Australia s adoption of television, and screening rights caused controversy in the lead up to the Games. This issue comprises four stamps, designed as two se-tenant pairs. By linking the original 1956 stamps with contemporary photographs of Melbourne s Yarra River and Collins Street, this commemorative issue marks the passage of time while celebrating the heritage of the host city and the Olympic Games stamp pack first day cover 7

9 1 november 2006 As is customary with our Christmas stamp issues, the approach this year engages with aspects of the traditional Christmas story. Melbourne-based artist Anne Spudvilas has skilfully worked her canvas to depict three scenes from the story surrounding Christ s birth: the baby Jesus in the arms of the Virgin Mary; one of the three wise men journeying to Bethlehem; and a young shepherd boy. Anne is a portrait painter and works predominantly in oils, a medium that gives richness to the colour of the canvas and texture to its surface.
