Cover photo: Tom Roschi, The Ghan crossing the Finke River/ Great Southern Rail One of my favourite issues is Great Australian Railway Journeys. Due to be released on 7 May, it features some of Australia s great trains. A few years ago I was fortunate to live in Tasmania which gave me the opportunity to ride on the West Coast Wilderness Railway (between Queenstown and Strahan). I definitely recommend this journey. Australia is blessed with a range of incredible natural wonders and we celebrate a number of these in May with the Australian World Heritage Sites issue. Each stamp features a UNESCO World Heritage listed site and the first day of issue postmark is especially clever. The Working Dogs issue from 2008 was particularly popular with both collectors and the public and in June, we have a special issue titled Adopted and Adored which features five special pooches. This issue seeks to raise awareness of responsible dog ownership and encourages prospective owners to consider adopting a dog from one of the many organisations seeking to re-home lost or abandoned dogs. Each of the dogs in this issue has been adopted and is now adored. The year 2013 marks the 100th anniversary of the Kangaroo and Map, the Australian Commonwealth s first stamp. To commemorate this significant milestone we will be issuing a stamp series celebrating our Colonial Stamp Heritage each year until The first of these is featured on page five. Plans are also underway for a major international stamp show to be held in Australia in May 2013 as part of this commemoration. To support this show Australia Post has produced a special limited-edition of the miniature sheet for this issue (10,000 copies). Proceeds from the sale of this special miniature sheet will be presented to the show organising committee. The most anticipated international stamp show for 2010 is to be held in London and that runs from 8 to 15 May. As it is the only international show that Australia Post will be attending this year, we have produced a special range of overprinted miniature sheets that will be a great souvenir of the show. We hope all our international collectors who may be attending the show will come and say hello! Until next time, Noel Leahy, Manager, Philatelic Group

5 COLONIAL HERITAGE: EMPIRE 7 MAY Minisheet $5... Queen Victoria First day cover Maxicard Prior to Federation and the release of Australia s first national stamp issue in 1913 the six former colonies issued their own stamps. This stamp issue is the first in a series of four commemorating that early philatelic history. This $5 stamp reinterprets the original Chalon head designs of Van Diemen s Land/Tasmania and Queensland (in circulation from 1855 to 1892 and 1860 to 1913 respectively). The portrait of Queen Victoria is based on Alfred Chalon s 1837 painting of the young queen in her coronation robes. Chalon s painting, now in Belgium s Royal Collection, is reproduced on the miniature sheet. Issue Highlight This high-denomination stamp has been issued in double-definitive size. 6 GREAT AUSTRALIAN RAILWAY JOURNEYS 7 MAY c... The Ghan 55c... West Coast Wilderness Railway 55c... The Indian Pacific $ Kuranda Scenic Railway First day cover (gummed) First day cover (self-adhesive) Minisheet Australian trains cross the continent east to west and south to north, covering great distances over often isolated and difficult terrain. They also cover much smaller distances in rugged and precipitous mountain country. These trains were once the primary means of linking isolated settlements with more populous centres. The issue showcases great Australian trains that traverse inaccessible places of Australia. Some, like the Indian Pacific, cross the continent from east to west, traversing thousands of kilometres, while others, like The Ghan celebrating its 81st anniversary this year link Adelaide in the south with Darwin in the north First day cover (minisheet) Roll of stamps (200 x 55c) 6 stamp bulletin australia no. 304 May June 2010 As well as these long-distance railways there are the shorter Kuranda Scenic Railway in northern Queensland and the West Coast Wilderness Railway in Tasmania. Both these engineering feats opened up previously inaccessible country and recall the importance of the railway to remote Australian settlements. Today it is hard to imagine how difficult the country was. In the case of the Indian Pacific, for instance, there were no permanent fresh watercourses, which was a real problem for steam trains. Bores and reservoirs had to be established along the line, the water often proving unusable. As a result trains had to carry their own water supply.

10 SHANGHAI WORLD EXPO MAY Sheetlet of 10 x 55c The Shanghai World Expo 2010 takes place from 1 May to 31 October The theme of Expo 2010 is Better City, Better Life, with participants from over 190 countries displaying and engaging with ideas of urban development and culture. In 1800 just two per cent of the global population lived in cities; in 2010 that figure is estimated to be 55 per cent. Various sub-themes, including diverse cultures, science and technology, and economic prosperity will explore blueprints for future cities. It is expected that with more than 70 million visitors, Expo 2010 will be the biggest world exposition in history and the largest event held in China since the 2008 Olympic Games. The Australian pavilion, designed by renowned Melbourne architecture firm Wood Marsh, evokes Australia s ancient landscape. Hosting an array of exhibitions, the Australian pavilion offers a program of diverse cultural experiences. The welcoming Australian kookaburra mascot is named Peng Peng in Mandarin, which translates as friendship. Shanghai, located at the mouth of the Yangtze River on China s eastern coast, is not only the largest city in China, with a population of over 20 million people, but is also the largest commercial and financial centre in mainland China and boasts the biggest cargo port in the world. 10 stamp bulletin australia no. 304 May June 2010

14 EMERGENCY SERVICES 15 JUNE c... Police 55c... Fire 55c... Ambulance 55c... Call Service This stamp issue is designed to heighten public awareness for phoning Triple Zero. It has been estimated that in approximately 60 per cent of cases people who phone 000 do so for the wrong reasons First day cover (gummed) First day cover (self-adhesive) In Australia, Triple Zero (000) is the primary national emergency number. It puts Australians in contact with the police, fire and ambulance services during a life or property-threatening, time-critical emergency. Knowing how to call Triple Zero in an emergency can be the difference between life and death. There are three key messages to remember when calling Triple Zero. These are: stay focused stay relevant stay on line. It is essential the caller tells the operator the emergency service required and where they are calling from. Remembering these instructions ensures the caller receives the right emergency service in the quickest time possible. In 1961, the office of the Postmaster General (PMG) introduced the 000 number in major population centres, and near the end of the 1980s extended its coverage nationwide. The number 000 was chosen for several reasons, one of which was zero is closest to the finger stall on Australian rotary dial phones, so it is easy to dial in the darkness. Hibiscus tiliaceus $ Suriana maritima $ Morinda citrifolia The Ipomoea pes-caprae, one of the most widely distributed beach plants throughout tropical and subtropical areas in the world, is a pink-purple flowering trailing plant which grows along the ground, on beach dunes, helping to stabilize them. The Hibiscus tiliaceus is an evergreen tree, indigenous throughout the tropics and subtropics and highly variable in form. Its beautiful cup-shaped flowers are fragrant and shortlived, changing colours through yellow to pink prior to falling. The Suriana maritima, a shrub to three metres, is often found growing on sand dunes and rocky shores. It has yellow, cup-shaped flowers which occur consistently throughout the year. The flower of the Morinda citrifolia is a composite cream colour, while its egg-shaped fruit is sometimes known as rotten cheese fruit because of its pungent smell First day cover TECHNICAL DETAILS Issue date June 2010 FDI withdrawal date July 2010 Denominations... 2 x 55c, 2 x $1.10 Stamp/Product design... 18 AUSTRALIAN ANTARCTIC TERRITORY MACQUARIE ISLAND 22 JUNE Minisheet 55c... Macquarie Island Cabbage Flower 55c... Southern Elephant Seal $ Caroline Cove $ Mawson Point Stacks First day cover (minisheet) A subantarctic island, Macquarie Island is situated about 1,500 km south-south-east of Tasmania, about half-way between Tasmania and Antarctica. Listed as a World Heritage Area and managed as a Nature Reserve by the government of Tasmania, it is an important meteorological monitoring site and home to a permanently occupied station run by the Australian government. Marine wildlife makes Macquarie Island one of the most remarkable places on Earth. Each spring and summer, millions of marine animals come ashore to mate, lay, pup and moult. There are no terrestrial native mammals on the island, with Southern Elephant Seals and fur seals being the only mammalian representatives. Macquarie Island is also a critical breeding ground for seabirds and delicate plant systems. In recent years rabbits and rodents have caused serious damage to the island s flora and fauna, particularly its burrowing seabirds. The Macquarie Island Pest Eradication Project is due to commence in mid-2010 and aims to eradicate rabbits, rats and mice from the island. Geologically unique, Macquarie Island is one of the few places in the world where the oceanic crust is exposed above the surface of the sea. The climate is wet, windy and usually cold, with an average temperature of around four degrees centigrade. No trees or shrubs can withstand the island s harsh environment; vegetation is dominated by grasses and megaherbs, with mosses and lichens also abundant. 18 stamp bulletin australia no. 304 May June 2010

20 ADOPTED AND ADORED 29 JUNE c... Piper 55c... Jessie 55c... Buckley 55c... Daisy 55c... Tigger First day cover (gummed) shown First day cover (self-adhesive) Australia has one of the highest levels of dog ownership worldwide, with an estimated 40 per cent of Australian households having at least one dog. This means that there are around 4 million dogs nationwide. But while Australia enjoys a high level of dog ownership, a high number of dogs are admitted into shelters. During , the RSPCA alone recorded 69,383 admissions into its shelters across the country. This stamp issue promotes responsible dog ownership and supports the dedicated work of organisations re-homing lost and abandoned dogs. The RSPCA, Victoria s Lost Dogs Home, Dogs Homes of Tasmania and the NSW Animal Rescue are just some of the key establishments working tirelessly for animal welfare and pairing lost or abandoned dogs with new owners. Their number is significantly boosted by the many other small shelters also re-homing dogs. In the case of two of Australia s largest shelters the RSPCA and the Lost Dogs Home they find new owners for around 70 per cent of the dogs admitted. Only those that are healthy, de-sexed and free of behavioural problems (such as biting and excessive barking) can be re-homed through their adoption programs. Each of the dogs featured in this stamp issue has been given a second chance. 28 TALKING STAMPS WITH ELIZABETH GERTSAKIS Bombing of Darwin 1942 The date of 19 February 1942 is remembered as the day of the Japanese air raids on Darwin, the largest attacks ever mounted by a foreign power against Australia. The raids were the first of almost 100 air raids during More bombs were dropped on Darwin than in the attack on Pearl Harbor, and although it came under attack from the air another 58 times in 1942 and 1943, the raids on 19 February were devastating by comparison. Fifty years later, on 19 February 1992, Australia Post issued a set of stamps designed by Brian Clinton, Australians Under Fire, recalling four significant battle arenas of They included the bombing of Darwin, the Battle of Milne Bay, the Kokoda Trail and the Coral Sea Battle. This year, 19th February was the 68th commemoration of the bombing of Darwin; Australia Post honoured the work of the surviving servicemen and their supporters, the Darwin Defenders, with a memorial dedicated to the Battle for Australia The memorial shows a map of the top half of Australia and indicates the 14 locations around the northern, eastern and western coast of Australia that were bombed. They were Darwin, Millingimbi, Port Patterson, Horn Island, Mossman, Townsville, Wyndham, Drysdale, Derby, Broome, Port Headland, Onslow and the most southern, Exmouth Gulf. The connection with Australia Post is significant, as the Darwin Post Office, Telegraph Office, Cable Office and postmaster s residence suffered direct hits and were all lost. The 10 staff were all killed, including the postmaster, his wife and daughter, and two sisters working as telephonists. Darwin had a population of about 2,000 at the time, the normal civilian population of about 5,000 having been reduced by evacuation. Although it was a strategically located naval port and airbase, and there were about 15,000 Allied soldiers in the area, the city and soldiers were underresourced and unprepared. In the month prior to the air raids Japan had overrun Malaysia, and a week before had forced the surrender of Singapore. The object of the Japanese air raids was to neutralise Australia as a prelude to capturing Java and Timor. Personalised Stamps 45c Bombing of Darwin stamp 1992 The first raid, which virtually destroyed the town, was by 152 bombers escorted by 36 fighters. Later the same day a second raid by 54 bombers destroyed the RAAF station six kilometres out of Darwin. More than 200 bombers attacked the town, dropping 683 bombs. The numbers killed varied from 240 to 1,100; eight ships were sunk and 15 seriously damaged. There was complete destruction of all 23 aircraft, both bombers and fighters, and Darwin had no air cover for the next month. There were approximately 13,000 Australian servicemen in Darwin when the first raid occurred. The last raid was on 12 November The people who were killed in all these raids were not only Australians, but also American, British and members of other Allied nations. By the end of 1942 there were approximately 60,000 Australian and Allied servicemen in the area, training in the tropical climate and conditions. By the end of the war, some 250,000 men and women of all three services had served in the Northern Territory.
