2 Dear Collectors Welcome to the second edition of the Stamp Bulletin for 2019, in which we introduce the stamp issues and collectables that will be released in March and April. We also present the stamps and products that celebrate this year s Australian Legends, announced in January. Michael Zsolt Manager, Philatelic Australia Post All applications for the reproduction of Australian stamps should be made in writing to: Manager Philatelic Australia Post GPO Box 1777 MELBOURNE VIC 3001 mailorder@auspost.com.au A new Australian Fauna stamp issue features four of Australia s much-loved native animals, and will delight adults and children alike. Australian fauna is also represented in the issue Sustainable Fish, which features three species (Patagonian Toothfish, Blue Grenadier and Tiger Flathead) classified as sustainable in Australia, together with examples of the commercial fishing techniques used to minimise environmental impacts. In 2019, it will be 50 years since the opening of Casey research station in Antarctica, the permanent station that replaced Wilkes station and the interim Repstat facility. In March we will release a four-stamp issue marking the anniversary of Casey, which officially opened 19 February In early April, a pair of stamp designs will represent the Norfolk Island Tree Fern, while later in the month Anzac Day will be marked with two stamp designs incorporating poster artwork from 1919, heralding peace after the Great War. The United Nations General Assembly has declared 2019 the International Year of Indigenous Languages. It is designed to raise awareness of the role of Indigenous languages around the world in sustaining communication, traditional knowledge and cultural diversity. In April, we release a stamp to mark the significance of Indigenous languages in Australia. Of the estimated 120 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander languages still in existence, around 100 are at risk of being lost. Finally, on behalf of Australia Post, I want to extend hearty congratulations to Australian philatelist Bernard Beston, the newly elected president of the FIP (Fédération Internationale de Philatélie), the world body promoting the interests of philately. Bernard was elected on 2 December 2018, at the 75th FIP congress in Bangkok, held in association with Thailand 2018 General World Stamp Exhibition. He has served as a FIP board director since 2010 and as a FIP vice president since We wish him well in such an important position. australiapostcollectables.com.au

In January, we announced five celebrated children's authors as the recipients of the 2019 Australian Legends Award. These outstanding authors create stories for readers and listeners across age groups, from early childhood to young adult. Mem Fox AM studied children s literature and literacy in the early 1970s. Her first book, the very popular Possum Magic, was written at this time and has become Australia s highest selling children s book. Since this first success, she has written more than 40 books. Morris Gleitzman, the Australian Children s Laureate for , published his first novel for young readers, The Other Facts of Life, in The themes of his books, which number around 40, are often serious, with his young protagonists facing some of life s great challenges. Leigh Hobbs has a gift for combining pictures and words, recognised with the publication of his first book, Old Tom, in The author of more than 20 titles, he uses his words to say one thing and pictures to say something else, entertaining and educating his young audience. Alison Lester s first children s book, Clive Eats Alligators, was published in 1985, and since then she has created more than 25 picture books and two novels. Family and nature are important themes in her books, which encourage children to believe in themselves and to celebrate their differences. Shaun Tan expertly weaves art and literature into his picture books. Combining incisive words and often-fantastical illustrations, his multi-layered books, numbering nearly 20, have great appeal to both young readers and adults alike. Tan won an Oscar for the film adaptation of his The Lost Thing.

The Galah (Eolophus roseicapilla) is a vocal and playful bird is known for its acrobatic style of flight. The Red Kangaroo (Osphranter rufus) is the largest terrestrial mammal in Australia, with some males known to stand as tall as at two metres and weigh around 85 kilograms. The Red Kangaroo s substantial rear leg muscles help them to jump a distance of nine metres in a single bound, reaching heights of around 1.8 metres. The Eastern Blue-tongue (Tiliqua scincoides) is a common sight in eastern and northern Australia, though species of blue-tongues are found throughout mainland Australia, often in backyards. Blue-tongues, so-named for their deep cobalt-blue tongues, are quite shy, though they can become aggressive if threatened. The endangered Tasmanian Devil (Sarcophilus harrisii) is the largest living carnivorous marsupial in Australia and the world, with males weighing around 12 kilograms. Despite its fearsome reputation, the fierce grunts and screeches that led to it being branded a devil are actually thought to be made out of fear rather than aggression. Now restricted to Tasmania, much work is being done to save this fascinating creature from the fatal Devil Facial Tumour Disease. This stamp issue presents three species of fish that are classified as sustainable in Australia, either by the international notfor-profit Marine Stewardship Council and/or the national Status of Australian Fish Stocks reports. In the background of each stamp design is a simplified graphic of a technique deployed in commercial fisheries to minimise environmental impacts. Australian commercial fisheries relating to the Patagonian Toothfish (Dissostichus eleginoides) are found in the Southern Ocean and the Ross Sea. This large and slender deep-water species can grow to up to around two metres in length and 200 kilograms in weight. Also known as hoki, the long and slim Blue Grenadier (Macruronus novaezelandiae) is a bottom-dwelling deep-water fish found in temperate marine waters of New Zealand and Australia. It can reach a size of around 110 centimetres in length and six kilograms in weight. Tiger Flathead (Platycephalus richardsoni) is an orange and greyish-brown spotted fish, with a large flattened head, ranging in length from around 35 centimetres up to 70 centimetres. In December 1988 the present-day Casey station was opened. It was built with robust concrete foundations and an external skin of steel-clad polystyrene foam, providing a more modern, comfortable and safe facility. While 21 April marks the Queen s actual birthday, King George II established the tradition, in 1748, of the monarch s birthday being publicly observed on the second Saturday of June. Wanting a public celebration of his birthday, the King, who was born in November, decreed the monarch s birthday would be celebrated in summer and would coincide with a military parade. The Queen s birthday on 21 April is marked by midday gun salutes, but otherwise the occasion usually comprises a more intimate family gathering. This is in contrast to the public celebration each June, the centrepiece of which is the spectacular Trooping of the Colours, a parade involving more than 1,400 guards from the Household Division of the British Army, many of whom are mounted. The stamps in this year s annual Queen s Birthday stamp issue show Her Majesty at two recent public events. 16 Anzac Day 2019 In London, Anzac Day 1919, thousands of departing Australian troops marched triumphantly through the streets, saluting the Prince of Wales.

17 March April The legend of the Anzacs is alive and well in Australia, evidenced by the status given to the celebration of Anzac Day, which occurs on 25 April each year. This date marks the anniversary of the first major military action fought by Australian and New Zealand forces during the First World War the landing at Gallipoli and the attempted capture of Constantinople (now Istanbul, Turkey). Although a failure in military terms, what emerged was the concept of the Anzac spirit, which many argue helped to shape Australia s emerging national identity. The first Anzac Day was held on 25 April 1916, even though the First World War was still raging. The day was held not only to commemorate the fallen but to encourage enlistments to continue the fight. The first Anzac Day after the Armistice, in 1919, continued the tradition of holding memorial services. There was a sombre tone, as the public mourned those who would never return. The images in the stamp designs come from the covers of Anzac Day 1919 souvenir programs, each of which conveys themes of peace and gratitude. The artwork on the international-rate stamp is by John C Goodchild ( ), a stretcher bearer in the Royal Australian Medical Corps who was hospitalised in France in Technical details Issue date 16 April 2019 FDI 15 May 2019 withdrawal Denomination 1 x $1, 1 x $3 (int.) Language is not just a communication tool. For the approximately 370 million Indigenous people around the world it is central to defining identity, expressing history and culture, preserving rights and participating in all aspects of society. To raise awareness of the crucial role languages play, the United Nations General Assembly has declared 2019 the International Year of Indigenous Languages (IY2019). There were at least 250 Aboriginal languages in Australia before European settlement took place, most of which had several dialects. Of the 120 or so languages that remain, approximately 90 per cent are critically endangered. IY2019 is an opportunity to shine a light on the important work being done to preserve and promote Australia s Indigenous languages by communities and organisations around the country. This vital work is supported by 22 Indigenous language centres across Australia, which are funded by the Commonwealth Department of Communications and the Arts Indigenous Languages and Arts program. 800-plus language varieties have been recorded across the continent since European settlement.
