1 Stamp Bulletin Issue No. 355 / September 2018 Vintage Motorcycles Norfolk Island Cruise Ships Fair Dinkum Aussie Alphabet Part 4 AAT: RSV Aurora Australis 30 Years
2 Dear Collectors Welcome to the September edition of the Stamp Bulletin, which includes a nostalgic look at motorcycles from a bygone era. Since their appearance in the 19th century, motorcycles have been a popular mode of transport, although of course today s vehicles have undergone significant developments in design, engine power and safety. Michael Zsolt Manager, Philatelic Australia Post All applications for the reproduction of Australian stamps should be made in writing to: Manager Philatelic Australia Post GPO Box 1777 MELBOURNE VIC 3001 mailorder@auspost.com.au The stamps in the Vintage Motorcycles stamp issue present four motorcycles predating World War II that were constructed or conceived in Australia. In this edition we also present three collectables to mark the Invictus Games taking place in Sydney from 20 to 27 October. This international, adaptive, multi-sport event created by Prince Harry, the Duke of Sussex, is designed to allow wounded, injured or sick armed services personnel and their associated veterans to participate in a range of sports. Also in September we feature cruise ship tourism to Norfolk Island. The population on the small Pacific island can almost double during peak tourist season, with many visitors drawn to the island s history, including the World Heritage listed convict buildings. We also celebrate 30 years of important Antarctic service by the icebreaker RSV Aurora Australis. The distinctive orange ship, launched in 1989, undertakes important scientific research and is the primary transport between Australia and the AAT. Aurora Australis will soon be replaced by a new custom-built icebreaker with state-of-the-art facilities. In this edition we present part four of the popular Fair Dinkum Aussie Alphabet stamp series with the letters E, O, X, Y and Z. How many quirky Aussie words and phrases can you identify? The stamps are a lot of fun for general and social mail users wishing to add a little Australian humour to the mail. Australia Post will host a double stand at the Macau th Asian International Stamp Exhibition in September. We ll be offering a range of products and also presenting the print capabilities of our production arm, Sprintpak. While I m there, I hope to catch up with many of you so please call by the stand if you are attending. australiapostcollectables.com.au

In the years prior to World War II, motorcycling was a popular mode of transport in Australia. Numerous marques, based mainly in Melbourne and Adelaide, catered for the nationwide enthusiasm for motorcycling. These included Swastika in South Australia ( ), the Tasmanian-made Cyclone, built from 1915 to 1918; the G.C.S. (George Cyril Stillwell), which operated in Melbourne from 1912 to 1926; Hercules, assembled in North Melbourne, Victoria from 1912 until around 1927; Lewis, which was South Australia s largest maker of motorcycles until 1925, Southern Cross in Sydney (1920s) and Spencer in Queensland (early 1900s). However, with a few exceptions, most motorcycles were not made completely in Australia. Rather, most brands were assembled from imported components. This stamp issue features motorcycles that were constructed in Australia using some imported parts or conceived in Australia but built in Britain. James Hill & Sons of, Adelaide, assembled cycles using Kelecom engines from 1902 to 1904, most of which were sold with the Kelecom name on the tank. The motorcycle on the stamp dates from Precision engines were manufactured in Birmingham, United Kingdom and exported all over the world. The example on the stamp was originally assembled with a 500cc air-cooled side-valve Big Four single-cylinder Precision engine in The Whiting V4 motorcycle was conceived in Melbourne in The cycle on the stamp is the original motorcycle built by Whiting in London c and brought back to Australia in The Invincible J.A.P. is perhaps the best known of pre-world War II Australian-constructed motorcycles. Constructed mainly of British parts, the patriotic marketing included It s all British, built in Australia by Australians! The cycle on the stamp is a standard 6hp 770cc Invincible J.A.P. dating from 1923.

9 Norfolk Island Cruise Ships The permanent resident population of Norfolk Island is approximately 1,900. Tourism is the main industry of the island and in the peak season the population can reach 3,500. Tourists are drawn by the island s World Heritage listed convict buildings, the unique culture created by the descendants of Tahitians and the HMS Bounty mutineers, and the island s natural beauty and mild, subtropical climate. While most visitors arrive by air, cruise Minisheet $3 ships occasionally call at Norfolk Island. Because the island has no natural harbour, passengers must be ferried ashore on smaller boats. As a result, the ability to visit the island from a cruise ship is highly dependent on the weather. The stamps in this issue feature the cruise ships the Seven Seas Mariner and the Pacific Explorer. The Fair Dinkum Aussie Alphabet presents each letter of the alphabet on its own stamp, via humorous illustrated scenes of Aussie flora, fauna, people, places, icons, objects and inventions. This latest instalment features the letters E, O, X, Y and Z. You ll meet Eddie the echidna, who thinks he s an erudite expert on the Eureka Stockade. You ll witness Eric the emo Emu. He s giving Eddie an ear-bashing, right next to his eggski. You ll also be introduced to Oliver the oilskin-wearing ocker, who is over-the-moon about his latest op-shop finds. There s Xavier from Xantippe, who is excited about experimenting with his x-ray. Look out for a yabby-loving yachtie in his y-fronts, too. And lastly, you ll spy an over-zealous zoologist zooming in on two dazzling Zebra Finches. Enjoy! There are only six more Aussie alphabet stamps to go, so stay tuned!

This year marks the 30th year of service of Australia s icebreaker RSV Aurora Australis. Launched in 1989, the distinctive bright orange vessel was built by P & O Polar, in Newcastle, New South Wales, specifically for the Australian Antarctic program. The 94.9-metre-long, 3,911-tonne ship provides the principal link between Australia and its one sub-antarctic and three Antarctic research stations. While designed to cross thousands of kilometres of the world s stormiest seas and break 1.2-metre-thick ice at a speed of 13 knots, she has been known to roll up to 45 degrees in huge ocean swells. The Aurora Australis has berths for 116 passengers and is well equipped for marine science research, with a commercialsized trawl deck and a hydro-acoustic system to help researchers study Southern Ocean organisms such as krill. Science conducted in onboard laboratories includes biological, oceanographic and meteorological experiments and observations. The ship is fitted with a helipad and hangar facilities for three helicopters. After 30 years of regular service in the harsh environment of the icy Southern Ocean, the Aurora Australis will shortly be replaced by a new custom-built icebreaker with state-of-the-art facilities.
