1 Stamp Bulletin Issue No. 359 / May June 2019 Flightless Birds Native Bees Cocos (Keeling) Islands Water Sports Sports Stadiums Principle of Equal Pay 50 Years

2 Dear Collectors Welcome to the Stamp Bulletin and to our range of stamp issues and collectables to be released over May June. This edition also provides details of the Sydney Stamp and Coin Expo and a range of products to be available at the event. Michael Zsolt Manager, Philatelic Australia Post All applications for the reproduction of Australian stamps should be made in writing to: Manager Philatelic Australia Post GPO Box 1777 MELBOURNE VIC 3001 mailorder@auspost.com.au Two stamp issues soon to be released present very different fauna subjects. In the first week of May we present an issue focusing on Australia s flightless birds the Little Penguin, Emu and Southern Cassowary. In mid-may, an issue of four stamps represents the main native bee families found in Australia. There are more than 1,500 species of native bees in the country, important for their role in the pollination of native flora. Two medallion covers, together representing the four bee families, are being released with this stamp issue. Australia is a sport-loving nation, and two new stamp issues take sport as their subject. The Cocos (Keeling) Islands stamp issue, released late May, focuses on four of the water sports enjoyed in this tropical island environment windsurfing, surfing, kitesurfing and snorkelling. While Australians participate in many sporting activities, they are also great consumers of spectator sports. In early June we release an issue that represents some of Australia s chief sports stadiums, venues that enjoy both domestic and international acclaim. The Sports Stadiums stamps feature AAMI Park, Optus Stadium, Sydney Cricket Ground and Melbourne Cricket Ground. Also in June we recognise the 50th anniversary of the introduction of the principle of equal pay for equal work in Australia. The landmark decision followed decades of fighting for the recognition by Australian women workers and a single stamp design represents the struggle. As well as the Sydney Stamp and Coin Expo, Australia Post will also be attending an international stamp show in Wuhan, China. We look forward to catching up with those collectors attending. australiapostcollectables.com.au

Only three Australian bird species are truly flightless. The Little Penguin (Eudyptula minor) is the smallest of all penguin species and the only penguin to breed in mainland Australia and Tasmania. The Emu (Dromaius novaehollandiae) and the Southern Cassowary (Casuarius casuarius) are the country s largest birds. The Little Penguin, which reaches around 33 centimetres in height, is found around the coast of southern Australia. The Little Penguin spends most of its time foraging at sea, returning just after dusk to rocky burrows near the beach. The female lays two white eggs, incubated by both parents, who also rear the chicks together. The Emu, which is common throughout much of inland Australia, can reach up to two metres in height and is the second tallest bird in the world, after ostriches. The female Emu s clutch of around eight to 10 dark-green eggs are incubated by the male, who doesn t eat or drink for the eight weeks until they hatch. He also cares for and protects the striped grey and brown-black chicks for 18 months, until they can fend for themselves. The only cassowary species found in Australia is the Southern Cassowary, distinguished by its vivid blue face and neck, long drooping red wattles hanging from the throat, and tall horn-like brown helmet or casque. The Southern Cassowary is found in tropical far north Queensland and is slightly shorter than the Emu but heavier, with females weighing up to 76 kilograms. Like the Emu, the male of the species incubates the blue-green eggs, which usually number three to five. The striped dark brown and white chicks are also cared for by the male.

6 Native Bees Technical details Issue date 14 May 2019 FDI 12 June 2019 withdrawal Denomination 4 x $1 Stamp and Kevin Stead product illustration Product design Sharon Rodziewicz, Australia Post Design Studio Printer RA Printing Paper (s/a) Tullis Russell (Securepost MC90) Printing Offset lithography process Stamp size 37.5mm x 26mm Perforations x 14.6 Sheet layout National postmark Module of 50 no design Werribee Vic 3030 This stamp issue depicts representatives from the four main native bee families in Australia. They vary in length between one and two centimetres. Most of us are familiar with the introduced European honey bee (Apis mellifera) and are unaware of the great diversity of the more than 1,500 species of native bees found throughout Australia. Most of these species are solitary, making their nests in burrows in the ground or in small hollows in dead wood. Native bees are important pollinators of native flora and a vital part of the country s biodiversity. The conservation challenges faced by Australia s native bees include habitat destruction and fragmentation, as well as climate change. The Resin Bee (Megachile macleayi) builds its nest in narrow holes in timber, constructing the nest and sealing the entrance with gums and resins collected from leaves and plants. This solitary bee, which is found across northern Australia, prefers nectar from legume flowers. The Green and Gold Nomia Bee (Lipotriches australica) is found throughout eastern Australia. This solitary bee nests in the ground. After looking for mates and foraging for nectar during the day, clusters of numerous male bees spend the night clinging or roosting together on tree twigs or grass stems. The solitary Wasp-mimic Bee (Hyleoides concinna) can most frequently be seen feeding from eucalypt flowers in eastern Australia, from southern Queensland to Tasmania. It convincingly disguises itself as a black and orange wasp in order to fool and deter predators. The female builds her nest in stumps, logs or fallen trees, lining the walls and sealing the entrance with a cellophane-like material that she secretes. The striking, bright metallic blue Neon Cuckoo Bee (Thyreus nitidulus) is so named because it opportunistically lays its eggs on the pollen balls inside the ground nests of the Blue-banded Bee (Amegilla cingulata). This solitary cleptoparasitic bee, which has no need to collect pollen from flowers, is found across eastern and northern Australia.

9 Cocos (Keeling) Islands Water Sports Minisheet $6 The two atolls and 27 small islands comprising the Cocos (Keeling) Islands lie 2,750 kilometres north-west of Perth in the Indian Ocean. The azure waters of this unspoilt tropical paradise are ideal for a variety of water sports. Propelled by favourable breezes and tradewinds, kitesurfers and windsurfers speed across the warm waters of the shallow lagoon. At the Rip, located at the southern tip of Direction Island, snorkellers can ride the currents amid an abundance of spectacular marine reef life. The waters of the small island, Pulu Maraya, which lies at the southern end of West Island also offer excellent snorkelling. The moderate waves at the Spot on the ocean side of West Island attract beginner surfers while more experienced surfers are drawn to the nearby location known as the Shack. Elite athletes are crucial to the sporting landscape, but they rise and reign before passing the baton onto new generations of competitors. The main stadiums at which their talents are on display, however, are enduring places where sporting history is made. These stadiums are also often architectural statements in their own right award-winning designs or significant heritage places and they help shape a city s identity and contribute to its economic fortunes. We show four major sports stadiums in this issue. The Melbourne and Sydney Cricket Grounds are two stadiums with time on their side, the pasts of which stretch back to the mid-19th century; from humble beginnings, each venue has since built a rich and complex sporting history. In contrast, AAMI Park, Melbourne, and Optus Stadium, Perth, are two recently designed cathedrals to the modern religion of sport. They primarily host codes of football and opened in 2010 and 2018 respectively. Australian sports stadiums can be architectural statements in their own right First day cover (gummed) $4.30

14 Principle of Equal Pay 50 Years Technical details Issue date 18 June 2019 FDI 17 July 2019 withdrawal Denomination 1 x $1 Stamp design Australia Post Design Studio Product design Sonia Young, Australia Post Design Studio Printer RA Printing Paper Tullis Russell Printing Offset lithography process Stamp size 37.5mm x 26mm Sheetlet size 101mm x 156mm Perforations x 14.6 Sheet layout Module of 10 National postmark Canberra ACT 2601 While the principle of equal pay for equal work has been enshrined in legislation for 50 years, in 2019 women are still fighting for equal pay for work of equal value. Up until World War II, most women worked in women's jobs and earned just over half the male wage. In the 1940s this was increased to a minimum of 75 per cent of the male wage for employees doing the same or similar work. This difference in wages was justified by the assumption that men had to work to provide for the family and that women s primary responsibility was to care for children in the home. This belief was inherent in the important Harvester Judgement of 1907, which established the concept of a family wage a minimum wage based on the normal needs of the average employee to look after his wife and children. Women, it was assumed, would be supported by their husbands or fathers. For decades Australian women workers fought to be paid the same rates as men. In the 1960s the general expectation was that women would resign from their jobs when they married. Indeed, the bar on married women in the Commonwealth Public Service was only abolished in In 1969 the Australian Council of Trade Unions (ACTU) initiated a case that established the principle of equal pay for equal work. In 1972 another important case reviewed and extended this to the principle of equal pay for work of equal value. Both these cases were supported by public campaigns and demonstrations by women workers. While the principle of equal pay for equal work has been enshrined in legislation for 50 years, in 2019 women are still fighting for equal pay for work of equal value. The gender pay gap currently sits at 14.6 per cent. Traditional female roles such as child care workers still receive lower rates of pay and in many industries discrimination still exists against women s appointments to senior and managerial positions.
