Dear Collectors Welcome to the July edition of Stamp Bulletin Australia. Before we take a closer look at the stamp issues and products we have planned for the coming weeks I would like to share some exciting news that you may not be aware of. StampNews.com looked at unusual stamp contributions from around the world for the year 2011 and placed them under the rating Top 10 Extraordinary Stamps Two from Australia Post made that list with Mythical Creatures (4th place) and the Eucalyptus stamp sheetlet (8th place). We are very proud of our achievement and pleased with the recognition. Looking at the program ahead, this edition features a special collectable released in May, and celebrating the amazing winning performance of Black Caviar. There s something about a champion performance that creates a buzz of excitement. The release of this special product received a lot of attention in the circles that follow the sport and those that don t. Our featured stamp issues for the coming weeks cover a range of very different but popular themes, including historical milestones and exploration, world achievements and native animals. The first follows the trail of early explorers in Australia as well as the attempt in 1813 to cross the Blue Mountains of New South Wales. We also see the second stamp issue release of this year s Olympic stamp program along with further details of how to order the complete set of Gold Medallists sheetlets - The Gold Medallist Collection. From the Olympics in London we travel to the shores of the Cocos (Keeling) Islands and catch sight of four species of butterfly for the next stamp issue in August. Each stamp in this colourful issue brings the anatomical detail of the butterfly into focus with flora found on the islands featured in the background. We also celebrate the achievements of Australian Nobel Prize laureates with a stamp issue of five featuring the artwork of prominent Australian artists. There have been 11 Australian winners of this prestigious award since That s quite a feat when you consider the per capita ratio of each nation. Finally I d like to take this opportunity to bring you further news of the Australia 2013 World Exhibition to take place in Melbourne next year. Plans are well underway for the promotion of the event to collectors around the country and to the general public. Australia Post is currently developing a range of souvenir products to celebrate the release of the Kangaroo and Map stamp series, which was released almost a century ago. You can keep up to date with all Australia 2013 news, enter the draw to win philatelic prizes and purchase a range of souvenirs at the Australia 2013 website Happy collecting Michael Zsolt Manager, Philatelic

Inland Explorers 3 July 2012 Blue Mtns crossing Three explorers Issue highlights The stamps are presented in se-tenant pairs, and in the minisheet as a block of four. The minisheet features a map indicating the route of each expedition. $1.20 John McDouall Stuart $1.20 Overland crossing This stamp issue commemorates two anniversaries: in 2012 it is 150 years since John McDouall Stuart returned from his overland crossing of Australia; and in 2013 it will be 200 years since Gregory Blaxland, William Lawson and William Charles Wentworth crossed the Blue Mountains. In 1813, Blaxland, Lawson and Wentworth travelled through Durug and Gundungurra country to establish a route across the Blue Mountains to open up the western plains of NSW for farming and settlement. Others had attempted the crossing before, but the party s key strategy was to follow a westward-running ridge between the Western and Grose Rivers, travelling for 21 days to what became known as Mt Blaxland. Their expedition led, within a few short years, to a road across the mountains. 5 Inland Explorers 3 July First day cover (minisheet) Some 50 years later, Stuart became the first European to make the south north return crossing of Australia. He left South Australia with his nine companions in October 1861, on his third attempt to cross the continent, reaching the coast at Van Diemen Gulf on 24 July Stuart raised the flag the following day, after first attempting to find the mouth of the Adelaide River. Turning south, the party made Adelaide on 17 December that year. Stuart s success has been attributed to his experience, his egalitarian leadership style and his lighter method of travel. His expedition eventually led to the Adelaide Darwin telegraph, (enabling telegraphic communication with the world) and the Stuart Highway. No artist accompanied either expedition, so the source engravings on which the stamp scenes are based were created years later. Emile Ulm s Blue Mountain Pioneers was published in the 1880 Christmas supplement of the Sydney Mail, and is presumably his impression of the party reaching the western-most point of its journey. The overland crossing is based on George French Angas Planting the Flag on the Shores of the Indian Ocean Coast, featured in the 1865 edition of Journals of John McDouall Stuart Minisheet Maxicard set of four Stamp pack 5

17 July 2012 London 2012 Olympic Games Swimming $1.60 Pole vault $2.35 Rowing This issue is the second of three being released for the Games of the XXX Olympiad (27 July 12 August 2012) in London. Issue highlights The postal and numismatic cover for this issue uses three coins released by The Perth Mint. Each of the $1 Aluminium Bronze coins is legal tender. They were designed by Wade Robinson. This issue, which carries the symbol of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), commemorates the performances of Australia s athletes at the Olympic Games. Represented on the stamps is the sport of Rowing, discipline of Swimming and event of Pole Vault. These subjects are indicative of Australian athletes strengths at past Olympic Games: historically most medals won by Australian athletes have been in Swimming, Athletics, Cycling and Rowing. The Australian Olympic team athletes have always been most successful in the pool, as indicated by their 168 Olympic medals, including 56 gold. Australia s first Olympic swimmer was Fredrick Freddy Lane, who won two gold medals in 1900 in Paris. In the 1950s and 60s, swimmers such as Murray Rose, Dawn Fraser, Lorraine Crapp and Jon Konrads became household names Sheetlet of 5 x $ Technical details Issue date 17 July 2012 FDI withdrawal date 15 August 2012 Denomination 1 x, $1.60, $2.35 Stamp design & illustration Jonathan Chong Product design Sharon Rodziewicz Australia Post Design Studio Printer McKellar Renown Paper (s/a) Tullis Russell (B90 and B100) Printing process Lithography Stamp (sheetlet) size 37.5mm x 26mm Perforations 14.6 x Sheet layout Module of 50 (no design) National postmark Wembley, WA First day cover (gummed)

London 2012 Olympic Games 17 July Postal and numismatic cover Sheetlet of 5 x S2.35 At the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney Ian Thorpe, Grant Hackett, Susie O Neill and the swimming relay teams won a swag of medals. At Athens and Beijing Australian women established themselves as supreme in the pool. Pole Vault is just one of the events in the sport of athletics. At the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing the athletics team experienced great success, returning home with four medals, the most for an Australian team in Olympic athletics since Mexico City in Notable amongst these was Steve Hooker s gold medal win in the Pole Vault. Australia first entered athletes in the rowing competitions at the 1912 Olympic Games in Stockholm. Since then, Australian athletes have won 32 Olympic medals across men s and women s events in a number of different boat categories Stamp pack Maxicard set of three 7

24 July 2012 Living Australian Little Wonders The Godfathers Is there a Letter for Me This is the second Living Australian stamp issue celebrating the way we see ourselves through the eyes of everyday people. With the support of the Australian Day Council of NSW and Australia Post, Australians from across the country submitted entries showing how Aussies live every day through the creative medium of photography. The categories for this year are Humour, Lifestyle, Local and Global. The shortlist was compiled by the Australia Day Council of NSW (ADCNSW) and Australia Post, with the final selection chosen by a celebrity panel First day cover (gummed) The winning entries represent a range of Australian experiences from the vast brown land. Our strong beach culture is portrayed in the comical photograph of a brazen seagull with a stolen chip in its beak as well as the atmospheric image of two small children silhouetted on an empty beach at dusk. Two other photographs represent the rural experience: the tiny old-fashioned service station like those found in countless country towns across the nation and an eccentric array of letter boxes servicing farming properties. 8 Technical details Issue date 24 July 2012 FDI withdrawal date 22 August 2012 Denomination Stamp and product design Printer Paper (S/A) Printing process Stamp size 5 x Sonia Young Australia Post Design Studio McKellar Renown Tullis Russell (B100 s/a) Lithography 37.5mm x 26mm Perforations x 14.6 Sheet layout Module of 50 (with design) National postmark Sydney, NSW 2000 Issue highlights In addition to the range there are two postcard packs for this issue. 10 2 August 2012 Cocos (Keeling) Islands Butterflies Meadow Argus Common Crow $1.20 Australian Painted Lady $1.20 Varied Eggfly Issue highlights Attractive se-tenant pairs and a stamp pack are a feature for this issue. Issue highlights The Butterflies stamps were printed in 10 Micron Stochastic and these are the first Australian stamps to be issued using this technology. The use of 10 micron provides a much sharper print result giving more intricate detail First day cover (gummed) The Cocos (Keeling) Islands comprise twenty-seven islands formed from two atolls in the middle of the Indian Ocean, more than 2,700 kilometres north-west of Perth. Butterflies antennae are the main organs of smell; the sense of taste is located on the legs. A butterfly has two compound eyes (eyes with lots of facets gathered close together) and each separate facet sees a little part of what the butterfly is looking at. Most butterflies fly by day and generally rest with their wings closed in an upright position above the body. There are at least seven butterfly species found on the Cocos Islands and four of these are featured. They are the Varied Eggfly Hypolimnas bolina; the Australian Painted Lady Vanessa kershawi; the Common Crow Euploea corinna; and the Meadow Argus Junonia villida. Flora found on the Islands is shown in the background the orange flower is a Cordia subcordata and the yellow flower is a Wedelia trilobata. 10 Technical details Issue date 2 August 2012 FDI withdrawal date 31 August 2012 Denomination 2 x, 2 x $1.20 Stamp & product design Sharon Rodziewicz Australia Post Design Studio Printer RA Printing Paper Tullis Russell Printing process Lithography Stamp size 37.5mm x 26mm Perforations x Sheet layout Module of 50 (no design) National postmark Cocos (Keeling) Islands, WA Stamp pack
