Digital order number: aae_38024 Mitchell Library, State Library of NSW Dear Collectors In this edition of the Stamp Bulletin we feature some exciting commemorative issues as well as some new designs for overseas mailing. But first I d like to reflect on one of the most successful stamp issues of recent times Royal Wedding. The official stamp issue, which is also being referred to as the engagement stamps, and the Capturing the Moment sheetlet released within days of the ceremony taking place have seen a phenomenal run of success. There has been wide interest both here and overseas as many Australians eager to obtain an official memento of the occasion depleted post offices of available stamps. An event that can attract a viewing audience of around two billion worldwide deserves the attention. Australia Post, and especially our own Philatelic Group, is very pleased with the feedback received for the stamp issue design and product range. But now it s time to look ahead at more localised celebrations. A stamp issue in July uses photography from an online competition held by the Australia Day Council of New South Wales. The organisers asked the public to submit entries addressing the criteria community, pride, family and mates, and freedom. Five images judged to be the best would then be used as a stamp issue, which would reflect on what it s like to live Australian. For avid travellers wanting to stay in touch with friends and relatives there s also a range of prepaid postcards available using images from the competition. You may even spot a place you ve recently visited. Also in July we celebrate the significant contribution made to our tourist industry by Australia s alpine regions with Skiing Australia. The last few years have seen significant snow falls and holiday makers and weekend visitors make the most of this when they can. The ski season officially runs from June to October but some areas recorded snow falls as early as May this year. We round off the month with the second in the series Colonial Heritage. This second issue looks at our national identity as it was emerging and the changes that would go on to affect us all. Two stamp issues of worldwide significance will be released in August the Centenary of the Australasian Antarctic Expedition and a celebration of 50 years of the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF). The first stamp issue retraces the steps taken long ago by adventurous Antarctic pioneers seeking answers about this unknown region. More often than not they also faced unknown dangers. The second stamp issue is a collaboration of sorts featuring three Australian territories Cocos (Keeling) Islands, Christmas Island and the Australian Antarctic Territory. A set of four minisheets presented in a special joint stamp pack will appeal to collectors. Regards Michael Zsolt Manager, Philatelic

4 1 July 2011 Australian Bush Babies definitive issue 60c Bilby $1.60 Dingo $1.65 Kangaroo $2.35 Koala $4.70 Sugar Glider ISSUE HIGHLIGHTS A feature of this stamp issue is the set of five PNCs to be released over coming months. The first to be released is the koala. The Bilby (Macrotis lagotis) is a nocturnal marsupial with distinctive rabbit-like ears, greyish fur and a beautiful bushy black tail with a white tip. It survives on a diet of seeds, grubs, bulbs, fruit and insects. Bilby babies stay in the pouch for about 80 days. Despite a decline in numbers, the Bilby is becoming an increasingly popular Australian icon at Easter. The Dingo (Canis lupus dingo) is Australia s native dog. It is typically ginger in colour although some dingos are black and tan. While the young pups stay with their mother while learning the art of hunting, they usually live in packs which help rear them. Their deadliest predator is the wedge-tailed eagle. The dingo has a series of distinctive howls each conveying a different meaning. Unlike other dogs it does not bark. The Sugar Glider (Petaurus breviceps) is a shy, small gliding possum found in the forests and woodlands of eastern and southern Australia. It has a membrane extending from its fifth finger to its ankle enabling it to glide between trees using its long bushy tail for stability and steering. Sugar gliders are very sociable creatures forming groups of up to seven whose young may share a nest Maxicard set of five Sheetlet s/a (five x $1.65) Sheetlet s/a (five x $2.35)

5 Australian Bush Babies definitive issue 1 July Postal and numismatic cover Koala (released with this issue) The Kangaroo (Macropus rufus) is probably the most recognisable of all Australian marsupials and the red kangaroo is found on the Australian coat of arms. There are over 60 different species of kangaroo and they live in all areas of Australia. The Red, Eastern grey and Western grey are the most abundant species. Essentially nocturnal herbivores, kangaroos eat grasses, leaves, fungi and the shoots of small trees and need very little water to survive. The Koala (Phascolarctos cinereus) is one of Australia s bestknown and most loved animals. A mammal not a bear, the koala is found from northern Queensland to southern Victoria and south-eastern South Australia, although habitat destruction through residential development and farming has significantly reduced its distribution. Koalas spend most of their time in eucalypt trees sleeping and feeding. The eucalypt leaves are high both in fibre and moisture content and a koala may eat up to half a kilogram of leaves each day. 9 50th Anniversary of Amnesty International 5 July c Amnesty International Founded in London in 1961, Amnesty International is the largest member-based human rights organisation in the world, made up of more than three million ordinary people in over 150 countries. The primary objective of Amnesty International is to campaign for the international recognition, respect and protection of human rights. A charity funded largely by its members and public donations, Amnesty International is independent of any government, political ideology, economic interest or religion. This means it is free to criticise any government s human rights record without fear or favour and is able to retain a reputation of impartiality and transparency Stamp pack ISSUE HIGHLIGHTS The candle is a symbol of hope for all prisoners and victims. Barbed wire signifies that their hope is barred from being fulfilled. In 1977 Amnesty International was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for having contributed to securing the ground for freedom, for justice, and thereby also for peace in the world. 10 19 July 2011 Skiing Australia 60c Beginner $1.60 Snowboarder $1.65 Skier ISSUE HIGHLIGHTS The place for this FDI postmark is Jindabyne in New South Wales. The township is one of the highest settlements of its size in Australia 918 metres above sea level. The town is also in close proximity to the Snowy Mountains skifields. Snow skiing had its genesis in Australia 150 years ago, at the Snowy Mountains settlement t of Kiandra, New South Wales. A small group of Austrians and a Norwegian, goldminers at the settlement, were behind the activity. The club that developed was called the Kiandra Snow Shoe Club, later renamed the Kiandra Pioneer Ski Club. This is thought to be the first and longest-surviving ski club in the world, established the same year as the first club in Norway, although the claim is not universally supported. Australia s first snowfield T-bar was also erected at Kiandra, many years later in Today, skiing and snowboarding are undertaken in three Australian states: New South Wales, Victoria and Tasmania. While these are among the most expensive leisure activities to practise in Australia, recent statistics from the Australian Ski Areas Association estimate that just over two million lift passes were sold across the resorts in Australia s 14 alpine resorts are of varying size and sophistication, the most popular being Perisher, Thredbo, Mt Buller, Hotham and Falls Creek Sheetlet s/a five x $ Sheetlet s/a five x $1.60

11 Skiing Australia 19 July First day cover Victoria is home to a total of eight resorts, some of which offer only cross-county skiing; New South Wales is home to four; and Tasmania to two. Between them, New South Wales and Victoria attract the lion s share of skiers and snowboarders, Tasmania representing around just one per cent of the market. The resorts each have their own character, inspiring loyalty among visitors, who trek to the mountains from the opening of the ski season in June, until its close in October. The three stamps in this issue represent the two most popular alpine leisure sports in Australia, downhill skiing and snowboarding. They focus on recreation rather than competition and represent a range of proficiency, from a tentative learner to advanced slope slayers. The photographs also depict a sense of place, Australia s snowfields being unique for their open vistas and alpine gums Maxicard set of three Stamp pack TECHNICAL DETAILS Issue date 19 July 2011 FDI withdrawal date 16 August 2011 Denomination 1 x 60c, 1 x $1.60, 1 x $1.65 Stamp and product design John White Australia Post Design Studio Printer RA Printing Paper (s/a) Tullis Russel (B100) Printing process Lithography Stamp size 26mm x 37.5mm / 37.5mm x 26mm Perforations 14.6 x / x 14.6 Sheet layout Modules of 50 National postmark Jindabyne, NSW

12 28 July 2011 Colonial Heritage Emerging Identity $2.00 Kangaroo and Lyrebird $2.00 Black Swan and Southern Cross ISSUE HIGHLIGHTS Like the first in the series, this issue comprises stamps in double-definitive size, on paper featuring a simulated watermark. It also includes a special edition miniature sheet, printed in both offset and intaglio., This stamp issue is the second in a four-year series titled Colonial Heritage, developed to commemorate Australia s philatelic history. It focuses on emerging colonial identity in Australia First day cover (minisheet) TECHNICAL DETAILS Issue date 28 July 2011 FDI withdrawal date 25 August 2011 Denomination 2 x $2.00 While once colonists had defined themselves by their cultural proximity to Britain, the maturity of Australian-born generations, temporal distance, economic growth and political development all helped shape a sense of distinctiveness from Britain. The colonies growing self-confidence was expressed through their readiness to grasp and mirror local symbols, such as flora and fauna. Queen Victoria would continue to feature in stamp designs throughout the 19th century, but increasingly she shared this small visual space with a constellation of local images. This stamp issue represents that shift in colonial thinking, reflecting a greater sense of belonging in the new homeland. 13 Colonial Heritage Emerging Identity 28 July Intaglio minisheet stamp pack Kangaroo and Lyrebird The kangaroo and the lyrebird originally featured in stamps marking the 1888 centenary of New South Wales, the first adhesive commemorative stamp issue to be released worldwide. The kangaroo, flanked by the Sydney flannel flower, was in a one shilling (1/-) brown design; the lyrebird, bordered with waratahs and honeysuckle, was in an eight pence (8d) magenta design. The other Australian colony to feature a kangaroo was South Australia, using it in a blue two-and-a-half (2½d) stamp design released in Black Swan and Southern Cross The Black Swan has a strong place in Western Australia s philatelic heritage. It remained the central motif of the colony s stamps from its first issue, in 1854, until stamp production was transferred to the Commonwealth in The Southern Cross featured on many Australian colonial stamps, the first of which was the five shilling (5s) New South Wales medallion stamp of This resonant symbol of the south also appeared in the designs of one Western Australian stamp, six Victorian stamps and four New South Wales designs, including stamp duty and charity designs Maxicard set of two Minisheet 13

The initial fivestamp strip shows the key moments in the departure of the AAE from Hobart and the journey to the Antarctic. After departing Hobart in the Aurora, captained by John King Davis, the AAE landed at Macquarie Island where it established a radio camp. The party then continued its voyage to the Antarctic continent, arriving at Cape Denison, the main base of the AAE and referred to as the birthplace of Australia s Antarctic territory an area two-thirds the size of Australia. When Mawson returned to his huts in January 1931 it was as the head of the British, Australian and New Zealand Antarctic Research Expedition (BANZARE) during which he proclaimed 42 per cent of Antarctica for the British crown. Ownership of the Antarctic Territory was formally transferred to Australia in First day cover

23 Talking Stamps with Richard Breckon AAE handstamps Preliminary design of Mawson stamp featuring S.Y. Aurora 5d Mawson stamp, 1961 When Douglas Mawson planned his expedition to Antarctica in 1911, he asked for an Antarctic postage stamp to be issued, even providing a suggested design featuring a penguin. A century ago, such a proposal was too unconventional for Australia s postal authorities and it was rejected. However, as a concession, Mawson received permission to produce his own rubber handstamps, to be applied to mail sent home by the expedition s members. The handstamps, of which two types exist, were manufactured in Hobart. The circular design features a penguin surrounded by the lettering Loose Ships Letter / S.Y. Aurora and Posted at / Macquarie Island (first type) or Posted in / Antarctica (second type), together with the letters A.A.E. (Australasian Antarctic Expedition). S.Y. Aurora was the expedition s main ship and Loose Ship s Letter referred to mail lodged onboard the ship for posting at the first Australian port-of-call. Mawson s expedition departed from Hobart on 2 December 1911 and reached Macquarie Island 10 days later. The first outwards mail, bearing the Posted at Macquarie Island handstamp, was taken back to Hobart by another expedition ship, S.S. Toroa. The letters were postmarked in Hobart on 21 December 1911 and sent onwards to the addressees. Aurora left Macquarie Island on 25 December 1911, proceeding to Antarctica, where land parties established bases at Commonwealth Bay and in Queen Mary Land about 2,400 kilometres to the west. Departing from Antarctica, Aurora reached Hobart on 12 March 1912 carrying mail bearing the Posted in Antarctica handstamp. On 20 May 1912, Aurora made a voyage to Macquarie Island and brought back mail to Hobart. On 26 December 1912, Aurora again left Hobart to relieve the two Antarctic bases, Hobart being reached on 15 March In late 1913, Aurora made its final voyage to bring home the remaining expeditioners, who reached Adelaide on 26 February On all the return voyages letters were carried to Australia bearing the appropriate handstamp and lodged for onward postal transmission. Although Aurora did not have a supply of stamps onboard, some expeditioners had their own stamps over which the handstamp might be applied. Otherwise, the unstamped mail was franked on arrival in Australia with stamps purchased by the exhibition organisers. The basic rate of letter postage within Australia at the time was one penny. Although a significant amount of the expeditioners mail would presumably have been sent to family and friends, very little of it survived. Most of the surviving covers were prepared by philatelists seeking souvenirs. It is interesting to note that the expedition s assistant zoologist, Charles Laseron, was a philatelist himself. In later years, Laseron operated a stamp auction business in Sydney. During , Douglas Mawson led two expeditions called the BANZARE (British, Australian and New Zealand Antarctic Research Expeditions). As with the expedition, the second BANZARE also used a rubber handstamp for mail carried by the expedition s ship, S.Y. Discovery. The handstamp featured a penguin and the inscription, B.A.N.Z. ANTARCTIC RESEARCH EXP The BANZARE established British sovereignty over certain Antarctic regions, which ultimately led to the establishment of the Australian Antarctic Territory in
