2 Dear Collectors Welcome to this edition of the Australian Stamp Bulletin, which features the products for March and April. We begin with two already released stamp issues, the 2014 Australia Post Australian Legends Award and The Urn Returns. As always, a panel of experts was brought together in the subject area to determine the final selection. The five Legends spans a number of decades in their contribution and their selection reflects our love of food from a variety of different regions. For collectors with a Legend favourite there is a self-adhesive booklet for each of the five. In January we also released two stamps to celebrate the performance of the Australian cricket team in regaining The Ashes. The 5-0 win by Australia and the return of the Ashes demanded recognition by way of a stamp release for cricket followers around the world. The international $2.60 stamp presents the winning Australian team with the trophy and the replica Urn. In April we release the first stamp issue in a five-year program commemorating the centenary of WWI. This first issue looks at the first months of the war, from the declaration in August 1914 to the arrival of Australian troops in Egypt for training. The program of postage stamps is part of a broad Australian commemoration of this important era in world history. Each year, prominent events, behind the scenes stories and recognition of those involved along the timeline will be recorded with the release of five stamps coinciding with Anzac Day commemorations. The program is an ambitious undertaking for all those involved and one I believe worthy of the hours of planning, collaboration and effort required. I think you ll agree. As you may also be aware, Australia Post has proposed changes to its published ordinary letter prices from 31 March 2014 (subject to Ministerial processes). The proposed changes are reflected in two of the stamp issues in this edition. Included in these changes is the introduction of a concession stamp. You will find more information relating to these releases further in. I hope you enjoy these wonderful stamp issues.

For nearly 60 years Margaret Fulton has been a force of culinary nature in Australia, through her roles as cookery teacher, magazine and newspaper columnist, and author of more than 20 cookbooks. She has used her intelligence, talent and force of will to change the way we think about food and cooking, and the possibilities of flavour itself. Her mantra has always been about doing the simple things well. The idea that the best tasting food is made with excellent ingredients grown nearby and picked in season is pretty ingrained today. But not so back in the 1970s, when Maggie Beer began to make her mark. One of the earliest localseasonal exponents, this irrepressible culinary doyenne has had long-lasting influence in kitchens around the country. Stephanie Alexander first published The Cook s Companion in This huge brick of a book is considered by many their kitchen bible. Having authored 14 books and run several restaurants, including the acclaimed Stephanie s, she has now embarked on the great crusade of educating primary school children across Australia about food through the Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden Foundation. The term modern Australian cuisine is impossible to define in terms of dishes or cooking techniques; it is more about an attitude, about shaking things up but being exacting about the quality of ingredients. Neil Perry owner of seven acclaimed restaurants, author of eight cookbooks and a familiar face of television is one of its finest exponents.

5 March April Kylie Kwong embodies a seemingly effortless blend of Chinese and Australian cultures in the way she cooks and thinks about food. Through books, television, cooking classes and at her popular restaurant, Billy Kwong, she has demystified Chinese cooking. By week s end an article in the Sporting News had published a satirical obituary claiming that English cricket was dead and that its body would be cremated and the ashes taken to the distant homeland of the victorious. The victory for the Australians had been an unexpected one. The Commonwealth of Australia and each of its states and territories has a floral emblem. The stamps in this issue depict a selection of these. The Golden Wattle (Acacia pycnantha) was officially proclaimed the floral emblem of Australia on 1 September The Common Heath (Epacris impressa) was proclaimed Victoria s emblem in Tasmania proclaimed the Tasmanian Blue Gum (Eucalyptus globulus) in 1962, and New South Wales chose the Waratah (Telopea speciosissima) the same year. Queensland proclaimed the Cooktown Orchid (Dendrobium phalaenopsis) in Western Australia took the Red and Green Kangaroo Paw (Anigozanthos manglesii) as its emblem in South Australia proclaimed Sturt s Desert Pea (Swainsona formosa) in First day cover (gummed) $10.10

The Queen at Royal Ascot Racing is one of the Queen s abiding pleasures, and the photograph by Stuart Wilson used in the $2.60 stamp design shows Her Majesty at Royal Ascot in Queen Elizabeth II The 60-cent stamp design shows the Queen viewing a parade as part of her Diamond Jubilee tour. This range has particular appeal for planners of special events, for tourists and for those wanting to add a heartfelt touch to their correspondence or invitations. Some designs in this 10-stamp issue are occasion-specific, such as those for a wedding or an engagement, while others are of a more general celebratory nature and can be used for many purposes. Apart from the two Australia map designs, the stamps can be used with the Australia Post Personalised Stamps service. 17 Australia Concession Stamp First Australian non-denominational stamp Limited edition of 10,000 This stamp pack is the only other representation of the Concession Stamp. These special non-denominational stamps feature iconic images of Australia a kangaroo bounding along a sandy beach at sunset and an outline of our nation inscribed in the sand. This stamp issue is the first in a five-year series that commemorates World War I, the first war in which Australians fought not as colonial soldiers but as Australians. Together the five issues will tell a chronological story of the war, with each issue relating to the centenary year in which it is released. Britain declared war on Germany on 4 August 1914, and so the designs in this first commemorative stamp issue relate to Australia s part in the first months of the war from war s declaration to the troops arrival in Egypt. The design treatment mimics newspaper reportage, one of the primary means through which news of the war was circulated. At the outbreak of the war, Australia pledged 20,000 troops to Britain. The War Declared! design depicts volunteers queuing to enlist in Sydney. The first conflict in which Australians were involved was the seizure of German New Guinea, represented in the Australians in Action design. The Australian Military and Naval Expeditionary Force landed at Rabaul on 11 September, taking possession of the territory soon after. Meanwhile, troops were being readied for departure to Europe. The enthusiasm of these early recruits is evident in Troops Depart. At the 11th hour, the ships were diverted from their course to England, and redirected to Egypt. Here, they trained at Mena Camp, in the shadow of the pyramids. The three soldiers in the studio portrait of Our Boys represent the tens of thousands of young men who left Australia to fight in a war half a world away.
