In Canberra I hope to catch up with more stamp dealers and collectors. 6 $ Grose River Gorge, NSW $ Wa lpa Gorge, NT $ Katherine Gorge, NT $ Geikie Gorge, WA GORGEOUS AUSTRALIA 3 MARCH 2008 This new stamp issue has been produced to meet the needs of changes to the international postage rates. It also offers the opportunity to convey engaging and interesting images of Australia to those receiving mail overseas. Grose River Gorge, NSW This gorge is located in the popular Blue Mountains National Park, part of the World Heritage-listed Greater Blue Mountains Area, west of Sydney. The Grose River, one of two river systems that dissect the Blue Mountains plateau, has cut a deep and meandering route, creating walls that in places tower to around 500 metres. The image on the stamp shows Hanging Rock a massive 100 metre high sandstone overhang that provides stunning views over the Grose River Valley, in Darug country. Walpa Gorge, NT Walpa Gorge is located in the World Heritage-listed Kata Tjuta Uluru National Park, in Anangu country. Geologically linked to nearby Uluru, the ancient Kata Tjuta domes, also known as the Olgas, are composed of grey sandstone; the iron oxide in the surrounding desert sands have stained the sandstone red, giving the rocky formations their distinctive hues. Walpa Gorge cuts between two of Kata Tjuta s 36 red domes, one of which is Mt Olga, the highest of them at 550 metres above the plain. Explorer Ernest Giles gave Kata Tjuta (Many Heads) its European name in 1872, after Queen Olga of Wurttemburg. Visitors are forbidden to climb on these culturally significant domes, but they can walk through the six kilometre gorge. Katherine Gorge, NT The Katherine Gorge is located in the Nitmiluk (Katherine Gorge) National Park, about 300 kilometres south of Darwin, in the Northern Territory. While its name suggests it is a single gorge, it is in fact a series of 13 canyons separated by rapids that run some 12 kilometres. The waters of the Katherine River have carved the 60 metre high walls of the canyon through a sandstone plateau, in a geological process that is estimated to have begun some 23 million years ago. The site bears paintings by ancestors of the traditional Jawoyn owners and boat cruises provide tourists with magnificent landscape views first day cover Geikie Gorge, WA The Geikie Gorge is located in north-western Western Australia, near Fitzroy Crossing, and is a spectacular feature of the Kimberley. It was named after Sir Archibald Geikie, a prominent British geologist, in 1883; its traditional Bunuba name is Darngku. This 14 kilometre gorge has walls 30 to 50 metres high, created by the Fitzroy River, which travels through the limestone territory of the Geikie and Oscar Ranges. The river has cut through a Devonian period ( million years BP) coral reef that once enclosed a shallow sea. The beautifully coloured cliffs are stubbed with marine fossil and coral deposits. The gorge can really only be visited in the dry season, as the waters rise by as much as 16 metres in the height of the wet season. 6 stamp bulletin australia no. 291 March April 2008

While rugby football had been played in Australia since the 1860s it was only one hundred years ago that Rugby League Australia s first professional football code was established. The early years By the turn of the century some clubs paid their players, and these clubs eventually formed their own code of rugby, known as Rugby League. Rugby Union players were not paid until the late 20th century. A meeting was held at Bateman s Crystal Hotel in Sydney on 8 August 1907 to organise professional rugby in Australia. The meeting resolved that a New South Wales Rugby League (NSWRL) should be formed, to play the Northern Union rules which differed slightly from those of Rugby Union. This was the first time that Rugby League was used in the name of an organising body. Players were soon recruited for the new game, despite the threat of immediate and lifetime expulsion from the Rugby Union. It was not until 9 January 1908 that Australia s first Rugby League club, the Glebe Dirty Reds, was established and the first season of Rugby League competition was played. Following WWI, Rugby League quickly took over from Rugby Union as the most popular form of footbavll in New South Wales and Queensland and the decision by the Rugby Union authorities to suspend play throughout the war is often cited as one of the prime reasons for the traditional dominance of Rugby League stamp pack There are eight maxicards in the set. This is the first time an Australian maxicard has been issued with two stamps. Rugby League today From this humble beginning, Rugby League has grown into a national and international competition. It is the dominant code in Queensland and New South Wales and competes with the Australian Football League (AFL) for the title of the most popular football code in the country. Since the 1980s a more national competition has evolved with 16 teams playing in National Rugby League competition in One of the biggest and most fiercely emotional competitions in contemporary Australian sport is the State of Origin series played once a year between New South Wales (the Blues) and Queensland (the Maroons). A series of three matches, it is now one of Australia s premier sporting events. The attendance record for a single match of Rugby League is 107,558 for a game between Melbourne Storm and St George Illawarra Dragons at the Telstra Stadium, Sydney in maxicard (set of eight) 10 stamp bulletin australia no. 291 March April 2008

12 50c...Face Shovel 50c...Haul Truck 50c...Road Train 50c...Ore Train 50c...MS Berge Stahl HEAVY HAULERS 1 APRIL 2008 The biggest, the longest, the heaviest, the fastest. Machinery that surpasses the realms of the reasonable is often an object of real fascination. Such heavy machinery is not produced in Australia, but by large international companies. Perhaps not surprisingly, each of the brawny machines plays a vital role in Australia s minerals industry; an industry that includes exploration, mining and processing stamp pack roll (100 x 50c) gutter (10 x 50c) The design shows the relative size of these heavy hauling machines. Face Shovel The gigantic face shovels that are so commonly associated with mining are an essential part of the industry. Used for excavation, these machines weigh some 700 tonnes and have an enormous bucket, with a capacity of around 60 tonnes. Working literally at the face of an open pit, these machines drop their payload into the back of the bulk hauler, which moves it to the crusher. Versions of these metal beasts get used in other industries, such as road making and drain digging. Haul Truck The giant 200 tonne capacity haul trucks that work on mining sites are the biggest in the country for example, the cab of the Komatsu 830E sits some 18 feet above the ground the truck itself being 23 feet high and the same width. The truck s diesel engine drives an electric motor in each of its wheels, and it is these electric motors that really drive the vehicle. The fuel tank holds around 4,500 litres. Road Train The concept of the road train, linking more than two trailers behind a powerful cab, was devised in Australia, apparently by a Dutch immigrant in the postwar period. Traditionally road trains were used to transport large numbers of livestock in remote areas. While road trains often consist of between three and six trailers, some trucks are known to haul nine trailers and are only allowed to be driven on specific roads in Australia s more remote areas the type of road each train can use is determined by its size. The speed limit for all road trains is 90 km/h with the biggest operating in Western Australia (WA). 12 stamp bulletin australia no. 291 March April 2008

13 first day cover (affixed) Ore Train The ore trains used by the mining companies in WA are the country s longest and sometimes heaviest. They are commonly 2km long and have three diesel engines with 200 cars, each of which carries 100 tonnes of ore. In June 2001, BHP Billiton Iron Ore ran the world s longest and heaviest train for the Guiness Book of Records; it stretched 7.4km, had eight locomotives and 682 cars, and had a gross weight of almost 100,000 tonnes far removed from the normal size and weight of ore trains used. The MS Berge Stahl Ships are the world s largest moving machines and the iron ore carrier, the MS Berge Stahl, is the largest bulk carrier in the world. Built in 1986 by Hyundai, the carrier is a massive 364,767 deadweight metric tons and is managed by BW Bulk. Only two ports in the world are capable of handling such a giant vessel; the Europort at Rotterdam in The Netherlands and the Terminal Maritimo de Ponta da Madeira, in Itaqui, Maranhao, Brazil. 14 TALKING STAMPS WITH RICHARD BRECKON The World Youth Day stamp issue comprises the first Australian stamps to feature a foreign head of state. Although Pope Benedict XVI is widely known as the head of the Holy Catholic Church, he is also the Head of State of the world s smallest independent country Vatican City. Established by Treaty in 1929, Vatican City comprises a walled enclave in central Rome that occupies an area of 44 hectares (0.44 square kilometres). The population is about 900, mainly consisting of clergy working as officials, and the Swiss Guard, the personal bodyguard of the Pope. The Pope is ex officio the head of state and of government of the Vatican City. Since 1929, the Vatican City has operated its own postal service and issued its own stamps. (Italian stamps cannot be used on mail posted in the Vatican City and vice versa.) More postal articles are sent from the Vatican City per inhabitant than from any other country in the world. Born in Germany as Joseph Ratzinger, Pope Benedict XVI is the 265th Pontiff and the eighth German Pope. The Coronation of Pope Benedict XVI was commemorated on three stamps issued by Vatican City. A few weeks earlier three stamps were issued to mark the Vacant See (Sede Vacante), the interregnum between the death of a Pope and the election of a new Pope. On 16 April 2007 Pope Benedict XVI celebrated his 80th birthday and the occasion was commemorated on stamps issued by Germany and Austria. The practice of countries featuring the Pope on their stamps developed during the Papacies of Paul VI ( ) and John Paul II ( ), both of whom toured the world extensively. Among the countries that have issued stamps featuring Popes are: Argentina, Bolivia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Brazil, Central African Republic, Chile, Croatia, Hungary, Ireland, Israel, Mozambique, Nauru, Palestinian Authority, Philippines, Portugal, San Marino, South Korea, Spain, Sri Lanka, Ukraine, Venezuela, Zaire and Zambia. Each of the previous three Papal visits to Australia in 1970, 1986 and 1995 have involved philatelic recognition through the provision of special postmark facilities. The first ever Papal Visit to Australia by Paul VI involved a single special postmark being provided at a temporary post office established in the Queen Victoria Building in Sydney from 30 November to 3 December The Papal Visit 1970 postmark, which did not feature a pictorial motif, was applied to more than 74,000 postal articles. The first visit to Australia by Pope John Paul II involved nine special postmarks, each featuring a different pictorial design, provided in the locations visited by the Pope from 24 to 30 November A distinctive souvenir cover was produced by Australia Post and sold in sets of nine covers serviced with the postmarks. The serviced sets were originally sold for $5.04 each. The second Papal visit by John Paul II was in connection with the Beatification of Mother Mary MacKillop. A single special postmark, as well as a cachet in gold ink, was used in Sydney on 19 January The occasion also involved the issue of a commemorative pre-stamped envelope featuring Mary MacKillop s Beatification. It marks the anniversary of the first major military action fought by Australian and New Zealand forces during World War I. They went with songs to the battle, they were young, Straight of limb, true of eye, steady and aglow. They were staunch to the end against odds uncounted, They fell with their faces to the foe. They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old; Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun and in the morning We will remember them. From the poem For the fallen by Laurence Binyon ( ) The soldiers in those forces quickly became known as the Anzacs Australian and New Zealand Army Corps. History was to remember the original Anzacs for their courage, often against insurmountable odds, and their readiness to help when called upon in the service of their country. Every year Australians reflect and pay homage to the sacrifice of the original ANZACS, and to those who have followed in the service of their country. On Anzac Day we participate in commemorative marches and services held at dawn the time of the original landing. A dawn service is also held at Gallipoli in Turkey where an ever increasing number of Australians find their way each year to honour the sacrifice made by so many. The stamps The stamp series seeks to capture the face of Australia on Anzac Day, as we commemorate the lives of those that were lost in times of service to their country. Each of the five stamps includes a line from The Ode which is synonymous with the spirit and meaning of Anzac Day in Australia. 16 stamp bulletin australia no. 291 March April 2008 Background image: Infantry moving forward to take over the front line at evening, reflected in a rain-filled mine crater, Hooge. 22 POST MASTER GALLERY LEST WE FORGET Anzac Day Remembrances 23 February to 14 June Curated by Elizabeth Gertsakis The exhibition will focus on the emotional human experience of war by ordinary Australians as remembered through Anzac commemoration, both past and present. Included are photographs and artefacts from Melbourne s Anzac House collection (Returned Services League) and illuminations of significant stained glass war memorials from key Victorian churches. Unique images of monuments and memorials to Anzac Day from small country towns and voices from postcards sent by Australian soldiers to their families create a sense of contemporary reflection on the meaning of war. The exhibition includes commemorative art and stamp issues from the National Philatelic Collection related to the history of Australians engaged in war. 321 EXHIBITION STREET MELBOURNE VIC 3000 Enquiries (03) or postmastergallery@auspost.com.au GALLERY HOURS Monday to Friday Saturday ADMISSION IS FREE 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Midday to 5 p.m. POSTCARDS SCENES OF MELBOURNE Released in December 2007 Three new postcards featuring scenes from Melbourne s world-famous tennis centre. This was the era of the artists of steel a few skilful craftsmen who hand-engraved the steel dies of intaglio stamps at the Note Printing Branch, Melbourne. Hunched over the die, the engraver had to cut the stamp design into the steel s surface, making cuts as shallow as one 500th of a millimetre and engraving the design in reverse! The extraordinary skills of hand engraving on steel, an art no longer practised in Australia, are celebrated in this exhibition.
