It is located on the Great South of the island and is among the best saprolite and limonite orebodies in the world. The industrial complex employs 3000 people and is based on hpal technology. It includes a mine, a plant and a port. Vale Nouvelle-Calédonie has produced NHC (Nickel Hydroxyde Cake) since 2011 and nickel oxyde and IPCM (cobalt) since Septembre 2012 and is currently ramping up production. ALTERNATIVELY OPTIONAL SITE VISIT TO NEPOUI-KOPETO Visite facultative de Népoui-Kopeto The Népoui Kopéto mining centre is located on New Caledonia s west coast, in North Province, some 250km from Nouméa. A number of deposits have already been mined at this site over a period spanning more than a century. A big SLN mining centre was in fact set up in 1970, and then made dormant in It was re-opened in 1994 when work started on the Kopéto B2 deposit. Below the mine, the Bernheim mill has the advantage of the latest ore concentration technologies developped by engineers from SLN and ERAMET. The present-day mining centre: 43km of roads for an impressive rate of output. Day Five: Friday July 5th 2013 Cinquième jour: vendredi 5 juillet 2013 OPTIONAL SITE VISIT TO KONIAMBO Visite facultative de Koniambo In collaboration with its partner Xstrata Nickel (that took over Falconbridge in a bid in 2006) and through the intermediary joint venture company Koniambo Nickel SAS (KNS), the SMSP Group has set as a target March 2013 for starting up the pyrometallurgical ferronickel process plant with an annual production capacity of 60,000 tons of nickel metal. Under the terms of the partnership agreement, Xstrata Nickel has a 49% stake and the SMSP Group a 51% stake in the joint venture.
