2 Page:2 Website: Jun 29, 2016 COMMONWEALTH OF AUSTRALIA - Postal Stationery 339 PS B Lot 339 ENVELOPES - STAMPED TO ORDER: 1919 Kangaroo 2½d indigo BW #ES7 with 'IRISH MISSION/TO CHINA' imprint at lower-left & pre-printed address of St Patrick's Cathedral in Melbourne, minor blemishes, unused. An exciting new discovery, being the first unused example of a 2½d Envelope to be recorded. [The ACSC notes that only one used 2½d Envelope has been recorded, a long type for South British Insurance, Cat $7500] The Irish Mission to China actually had its headquarters in Omaha Nebraska! It was the site of a 1919 meeting between Melbourne's Archbishop Daniel Mannix, a scathing critic of Britain's "occupation" of Ireland - and a fervent supporter of all Irish Catholic endeavours - & Eamon de Valera, later President of the Republic of Ireland. MAIL FROM & TO THE AUSTRALIAN COLONIES In March 2015, we presented the first part of Michael Lewin's fine collection of Australian outwards and inwards destination mails. We are pleased that Michael has now consigned the balance of this interesting collection. This "new" material includes many items to and from the German States and other parts of Europe, Asia and more. Also included are early pre-stamp covers and several exceptional frankings. 5,000
