A rare destination in this period. [While we have no cover census data for NSW, neither Barwis nor Palmer records any Victorian Half-Length cover to South Africa] SOUTH AUSTRALIA - Postal History 549 C B Lot cover to England "Per Norman" with London Printing 2d dull red SG 2 strip of 3 (margins good to large - except at right where a little cut-into - with a fragment of the unit at left) tied by dumb cancels of Adelaide (cds in red at left) & London transit cds in red, 'ROCHESTER' arrival b/s. [Whoever came up with the shade descriptor "rose-carmine" for this stamp was colour-blind. Superior to Harry Lower's similar cover - without transits - that sold for $862 at our auction of 12/5/2007] 551 C A- Lot (Jan 19) part-entire to ship's passenger care of a shipping agent at Melbourne with London Printing 6d SG 3 (2 margins) tied by dumb cancel of Adelaide (cds in red alongside), 'SHIP LETTER FREE/GPO VICTORIA' arrival b/s in red.

Lot C A apparently commercial cover to England with Thick 'POSTAGE' 3d olive tied by Adelaide cds. 150 VICTORIA - Postal History 667 C A- Lot part-entire (the front panel only) to Prussia care of forwarding agents in London "prhonduras" with rare franking of Ham Half-Lengths Fifth Printing 1d bright pinky-red SG 12a pair [7-8] with almost full margins & 3d blue SG 4a pair [12-13] cancelled with three strikes of Butterfly '26' - rated RRR - of Chepstowe, rated "8" in black in GB for an incoming shipletter. Ex Toaspern & Gary Diffen: sold for 2645 in [The "Honduras" left Melbourne 29/8/1851 & arrived London 8/1/1852. Only one other cover is recorded bearing pairs of two different Ham Half-Lengths] See #5 on page 406 of the Barwis & Moreton census. They recorded only 4 Half-Length covers to "Germany" but failed to recognise the ultimate address of this item. Palmer's earliest cover to Prussia is dated 1854 so he also was unaware of the destination of this example. 2, C B Lot mourning envelope to London "per Argo SS" with scarce solo franking of Woodblocks 2/- dull bluish green SG 35 (margins good to large, Cat 180 x4+) tied by Barred Oval '1/V' of Melbourne (d/s alongside), a little soiled. BRITISH COMMONWEALTH OCCUPATION FORCES 776 PS C CANADA 787 C A- Lot (Sep 1) commercial usage to Sydney of Forces airmail lettercard with largely very fine strike of the woodcut 'V J/TOKYO/ON ACTIVE SERVICE/HMNZS GAMBIA' cachet in blue & 'PASSED FREE/...' machine cancel, minor peripheral faults & some minor toning. [The lengthy letter is continued from another & discusses the impending Japanese surrender: "...Even while the ceasefire signal was flying we were attacked by a suicide bomber...pieces of the Jap plane falling on our decks as he broke up overhead...today we enter Tokyo Bay proper...gosh there is a collection of ships here...the big day is tomorrow when the formal peace will be signed..."] 1864 mourning cover to Ireland "Per Canadian Line" with 6c/12½c deep yellow-green SG 39 tied by light target cancel of 'ADELAIDE/CW' (cds at lower-left), transit b/s of 'HAMILTON/UC' & 'LONDON/UC' and very fine 'PAID/DERRY/NO 28 64/COL PACKET/ A ' arrival cds in red on the face, a couple of very minor blemishes that don't detract from what is a lovely cover. 4 Prestige Philately - Auction No 156 Page: 4 GILBERT & ELLICE ISLANDS Ex Lot SDC SHIP MAIL: Unusual annotated group of markings on stamp or piece including straight-line 'KULAMBANGRA' (large type) on Opts ½d+1d, 'MUNIARA' in red (2) or violet all on Pines 1d, 'Tambo' on Opts 1d & Pines 1d, 'SYDNEY' on Pines 1d pair & 'TRIENZA' on KGVI 1½d, manuscript "Neptun" & "Tokelau" both on Pines 1d, 'MV TRIASTER/9OCT1939' on KGVI 1½d, boxed 'SS ANTIGONI /LONDON' (light) on KGVI 1½d etc, also some with arrival or Paquebot markings including 1939 cover serviced at Melbourne, most are part- to large-part strikes only. [The "Nauru Chief" was operated by the British Phosphate Commission at Nauru & Ocean Island] C B NAURU Lot 835 SHIP MAIL: 1939 philatelic cover to England with KGVI ½d & 1d tied by two largely legible strikes of intaglio 'THE SEAL OF HIS MAJESTYS SHIPS/[flag]' in blue, very fine oval 'COMMANDING OFFICER/ 29JUN1939/HMS WELLINGTON' cachet in blue on the reverse, some toning. [In 1938, "Wellington" was sent to Canton Island to support Britain's claim to the island] 150 Ex Lot C SHIP MAIL: 1950s-1970s group of philatelic covers on annotated pages with a good range of ship cachets &/or Paquebot cancels & some cancelled on arrival, generally fine to very fine.
