It was assembled by a collector with a voracious appetite and deep pockets. However, it must be noted that quality wasn't his primary consideration and, unless noted otherwise, mixed condition - but generally from good to fine - should be expected. Postal history subjects feature, including postmarks & origins/destinations. The collector died many years ago so most of this material has been off the market for a very long time] 58 C Large bundle of mostly PPCs with an array of 'PAQUEBOT' handstamps & cancellations from many countries but mostly between Australia & Europe, the majority with Australian or Australian States stamps, noted four covers from New Caledonia, also some modern philatelic types, condition very mixed. Very scarce group. Rated by Nibbs at RRR but RRRR on Sydney Views. - Postal History C B SOUTH AUSTRALIA Lot (May 12) cover to a guard on the "GIP Railway/Hurdah/East India" with Chalon 6d yellow-green x2 lightly cancelled with Rays '96' of 'MARYBOROUGH' (b/s), Calcutta & Bombay transits & 'HURDAH' arrival b/s, very fine '1.SECT 4/UP/22.6/71/NE LINE' railway cds & a small tri-sected h/s on the face, redirected to "Hospital/Byculla", minor blemishes. Full of character. - Postal History C B Lot "On service" front to Adelaide (GPO arrival cds) endorsed "Free" and with a light but clear strike of the huge oval '[crown]/post OFFICE/PORT LINCOLN/28MY/1847' datestamp. 500

Ex Lower. - Postmarks TASMANIA - Postal History 395 CPS TASMANIA - Postmarks Two bulging volumes of PPCs plus some Shierlaw fronts & a few covers, all selected for the South Australian squared-circle (mostly) or cds cancels & arranged alphabetically & with very little duplication. Mostly the lesser towns but includes good to fine strikes of 'ARWAKURRA', 'BROWNLOW', 'BRUCEFIELD', 'COWARD SPRINGS', 'CORDILLO DOWNS' (poor), 'FULLERVILLE', 'HINDMARSH ISLAND (2), 'KINGSTON-ON-MURRAY', 'KEILLI', 'MUNDALLA' (poor), 'MUTOOROO', 'NEW MECKLENBURG', 'O.B. FLAT', 'PENNESHAW' (Kangaroo Island), 'PETERHEAD', 'PETINA', 'PT AUGUSTA WEST', 'PT McDONNELL', 'RAMCO', 'RED HILL', 'REDRUTH', 'RENDLESHAM', 'ROSENTHAL', 'ROCKLEIGH', 'STONE HUT', 'STOKES', 'WALKERS FLAT' & 'WATTLE FLAT' (2) etc etc. High postcard interest as well though many are greetings or other uninspiring types. Careful inspection is recommended as the quality of both cards & the postmarks is very mixed. [List of offices is available on request] (450+) Three large exercise books with an extensive array of mostly QV low values - many on piece - with cds & squared-circle types from many offices, numerous fine to superb strikes throughout, period seems to be 1870s to early-kgv. We noted lots of little nuggets here, such as 1893 'BLACK ROCK PLAIN' cds, 1898 'BROCKS CREEK' (NT) on registered piece, unframed 'FRIEDRICHSWALDE', 1877 'TIVOLI BAY' etc, so we expect inspection will be well-rewarded. (Many 100s) Selection in plastic pages with some handy Tassie PPCs a few with TPO cancels, some Barred Numeral cancels including sensational '42' on a sadly defective 1865 cover, 1877 damaged inwards registered cover from England with 1/- green, 1909 Weekly Courier advertising cover, 1d perf 'T' on PPC & another in lieu of Postage Due on OHMS lettersheet, etc, very mixed condition. Underrated at R. PO 18/3/1874; closed 22/12/ SDC Ex Lot 409 Travelling Post Offices: Annotated study with the undated datestamps Types J (2) & H on Letter Bills, dumb cancels with numeral removed (3) & Defaced '41' (3, including 2 very fine strikes on 1d block of 4), seven Tatts covers - two with 1d loose letter fee prepaid - with various TPO cds, largely very fine strike of 'QUE TPO' cds on 2d, etc. (45 items) TASMANIA - "What Happened to That?" [We are pleased to offer Patrick Reid's exhibit that has been awarded two National Golds, and an International Gold Medal at St Petersburg last year. The display is entitled "What Happened to That?" and is a study of what occurred to mail when the necessary regulations were not followed, or when something went awry in the postal system. Many of the markings here are extremely rare. In addition, many important Tasmanian covers are included. Many significant items were acquired from Randall Askeland, who is generally acknowledged as the foremost authority on Tasmanian postal history. Patrick has retained the sections of registered mail & 'T' handstamps for further study. References to the "Handbook" are to "Tasmania: The Postal History & Postal Markings" (1962) & "...Part II" (1975) which, despite their age, remain the foremost reference books on the subject] C A Lot 415 The ultimate item for the collector of Instructional Markings being a c.1905 stampless addressed envelope that has been struck with no less than 12 different handstamps including 'TOO LATE', 'NOT-KNOWN', 'CANNOT-BE/FOUND', 'MISSENT TO/LAUNCESTON' etc, also the only recorded example of the large 'L' h/s for use on "Listed" letters (a variant of the registration service). HELD FOR ADDITIONAL POSTAGE: 1885 unstamped cover to Swansea with 'Deficient Postage/Fine' h/s unusually without amounts entered, the sender was apparently advised & added Sideface 2d which was affixed across the h/s. [Items received after the close of the day's outwards mail were marked as having arrived late, to explain to the recipient any delay in delivery. (4) 300T 429 CO (B) Lot 429 RECEIVED AFTER THE MAIL CLOSED: 1871 large piece (200x143mm) from a registered parcel to England with remarkable Three-Issue franking (faults) of VDL Imperf 4d & Perf 10 1d x2 and 'TASMANIA' Imperf 6d & 1/- (cut-to-shape) all tied by BN '63' of New Norfolk, private 'BOURNBANK/Parish of/wellington' h/s & 'N NORFOLK/ ' postmaster's provisional h/s, sloping 'TOO-LATE' h/s applied at Hobart, a few repaired edge-tears & parts of the address label removed when the registration ribbon was removed. Endorsed "Printed Book with Photographs..." & signed "Molesworth Jeffery" which permitted mailing at the concessional rate of 6d for a "book packet" + 6d inland postage + 1/- registration. Ex de Righi & Askeland. [Believed to be the only recorded 'PAID ALL' cover from Tasmania, perversely on a cover that is clearly underpaid!] 500T

Ex Askeland. [This is the only pre-1903 example recorded. It was apparently applied in error] 500T 435 C B Lot 435 HELD FOR FUMIGATION: 1903 (July 2) cover to Scottsdale (b/s) with Pictorial 2d & Launceston cds, fine strike of the rare 'DETAINED FOR/FUMIGATION' h/s alongside, minor blemishes. [In response to a serious smallpox outbreak in the Launceston area, the "Examiner" newspaper advised that all mail, including newspapers, would be fumigated for two hours before despatch] "What Happened to That?" - Payment for Additional Service 436 C B 437 C B LATE FEES: 1873 cover to Launceston with Sideface 2d pair, one with superb 'LATE/LETTER' h/s the other tied by Hobart duplex, repaired flap-tear. [Letters received soon after closing of the mail could be added to the mail on payment of the appropriate late fee] LATE FEES: 1876 cover to Launceston (b/s) with Sideface 2d & 'LATE/LETTER.' h/s, however a second 2d (in a deeper shade) affixed for the late fee. The envelope was apparently opened & the sender in Melbourne (?) advised to forward the required postage. A Victorian Woodblock 6d was duly forwarded & affixed, being cancelled with BN '60' of Launceston where 'PRE-PAID/16JU16/1857' d/s applied & Hobart arrival d/s of the following day both on the face, light overall soiling & part of the flap missing.
