1 Prestige Philately - Auction No 173 Page: 1 THEMATICS & SUBJECTS 25 Ex Lot 25 C PAQUEBOT: Collection of mostly European covers & PPCs (many of the relevant ships), also 21 mostly GB Aerogrammes with ship or paquebot markings. (63 covers) COMMONWEALTH OF AUSTRALIA - Military - World War I C B Lot OAS cover with 'AUSTRALIAN/YMCA' imprint unusually in black, to GB with British 'ARMY POST OFFICE/ 25MR18/SZ 23' "skeleton" cds in use at Beersheba (Palestine) & boxed 'DAMAGED BY IMMERSION/IN SEA WATER' h/s applied at London, a bit soiled. [See Hoggarth & Gwynn at pages ] The cover was carried per SS "Kingstonian" which, on 11/4/1918, was torpedoed by German submarine U68. The ship was badly damaged. It was towed to Carloforte (Sardinia) where the mail - which had suffered water damage - was removed. At the end of April, she was again torpedoed by U48 & became a total loss. COMMONWEALTH OF AUSTRALIA - Military - World War II This section includes a series of reference collections consigned by Russell Stern of Sydney. As one should expect for such material, the condition is somewhat variable. 500 Ex Lot C mostly stampless covers the majority with 'HM TRANSPORT' h/s (one by air from Singapore) but including three with 'HM TRANSPORT' cds & Nov 1940 from Bombay ex the "Aquitania", very mixed condition. New South Wales Postal History - Registered Mail 250T 436 C B Lot double-rate cover to London "Per P&O China" with Diadem 8d yellow & De La Rue 1/- black tied by 'NSW' "bootheel" cancels & London arrival d/s of 26AU76 in red, very fine 'REGISTERED/SYDNEY NSW' d/s in violet at lower-left, minor blemishes. BPA Certificate (1975). Actually carried per "Avoca", departed Sydney 8/7/1876; then "China", departed Melbourne 11/7/1876; "Mongolia", departed Galle 2/8/1876; & "Travancore", departed Alexandria 20/8/1876, arrived Brindisi 24/8/1876. The long route mails arrived at Southampton 3/9/1876. [The rate paid - 8d x2 - paid for carriage per the long sea route. However, the arrival d/s proves it was sent via Brindisi] 400

SOUTH AUSTRALIA - Postal History 750T 529 C B Lot entire headed "Adelaide 5 May 1840" to Scotland carried privately to Sydney where placed into the mails, superb 'PAID SHIP LETTER/[crown]/MY*27/1840/SYDNEY' d/s in red, rated "3" in red for an outgoing shipletter, British boxed 'SHIP LETTER' h/s & London b/s both in red, rated "8" in black for an inwards shipletter, boxed Glasgow arrival b/s, two vertical filing folds. The condition is generally fine but some items - especially mint stamps - have been affected by the humid climate so careful inspection is recommended. [See also Falkland Islands and Tristan da Cunha] 819 C C Lot 819 AUSTRALIAN: 1911 commercial cover endorsed "No 2/Letter", to Sydney with Tasmanian 1d tied by one of two superb strikes - one on the reverse - of the 'LOOSE SHIPS LETTER/POSTED AT/MACQUARIE ISLAND/[penguin]/ S.Y. AURORA/A.A.E.' cachet, superb 'HOBART/21DE11/TASMANIA' transit cds, damp-spotting. [The sender was Expedition member Charles Francis Laseron, a naturalist & taxidermist. He was awarded the Polar Medal for his book "South with Mawson". In later life he was an auctioneer of stamps & coins] The "Aurora" departed Hobart on 2/12/1911. She was accompanied as far as Macquarie Island by the supply ship SS "Toroa", on which this cover was carried back to Hobart. [Kevin Dwyer's similar but finer cover sold for $4370 at our auction of 13/9/2008] 2, C B Lot 820 AUSTRALIAN: a PPC of the "Aurora" also from the first mail, to Sydney with Tasmanian 1d tied by one of three fine to superb strikes - one on the reverse - of the Macquarie Island "penguin" cachet, superb Hobart transit cds, minor blemishes on the viewside. Marjorie Wharton states: "The very few examples of this card...seen have all been used on the Expedition". [The message is signed "George Dovers", the Expedition's cartographer. Kevin Dwyer's similar PPC with the 'ANTARCTICA' cachet sold for $5290 at our auction of 13/9/2008] 4, C B Lot 821 AUSTRALIAN: 1912 commercial cover to Sydney with a largely very fine strike of the 'LOOSE SHIPS LETTER/POSTED AT/ANTARCTICA/[penguin]/S.Y.
