2 Jamaica VBVC Inf Packet Fast Facts & FAQs: Hw much des it cst? The Jamaica VBVC prgram csts $2,100 (ne week) r $3,100 (tw weeks), which includes airfare, rm and bard, grund transprt, service and cultural activities and emergency health insurance. It des nt include any additinal baggage fees beynd what yur airline ticket allws (Typically ne free checked bag.) Wh runs the prgram? Fields f Grwth was funded in 2010 by frmer Ntre Dame studentathlete, and frmer NCAA cach, Kevin Dugan. A native f Avn-by-the-Sea, NJ, Dugan nw lives between the USA, Uganda and Jamaica. Wh ges n these trips? The VBVC is fr bth males and females and is typically attended by high schl & cllege students, with strng participatin als cming frm recent cllege graduates and caches. Yu need t at least be a freshman in high schl t participate in the prgram. Yur skill level is nt as imprtant as having a strng wrk ethic, a passin fr Vlleyball and a heart fr service. D I sign up by myself r with friends? Many vlunteers jin ur VBVC grups as individuals, while sme cme with a friend r a grup f teammates. Yu shuld feel free t sign up n yur wn r t cme with friends. Parents with a passin fr vlleyball are als welcme t jin us. In the past sme parents have stayed in nearby htels r resrts while their children were serving in the VBVC. What is the purpse f the trip? (See trip itinerary included in this dcument) Cach (and play): Yu will serve as a vlunteer cach thrughut the experience as we run ur camp, but will als play in the Jamaica Friendship Games where yu will cmpete with and against sme f Jamaica s tp lcal talent. Serve: Yu will participate in service activities that enable yu t lve and uplift thers in need. (Assisting in cmmunity develpment in Saint Anne s, making hme visits t deliver care packages t elderly shut-ins, participatin in yuth develpment activities). Learn: In additin t yur service wrk and caching, yu will be n an experiential learning missin that tuches upn a multitude f cultural, plitical and sci-ecnmic tpics. Experience a new culture & have fun: There will als be plenty f time t have sme fun and experience the culture f Jamaica. These activities g hand-in-hand with the experiential learning aspect f the prgram and include; a visit t Prt Rya, bat ride t Lime Cay, a rural village experience in 9 Mile St. Anne s, dancing lessns, surfing lessns and mre! Where d we stay? What are the accmmdatins like? We stay in a retreat center at St. Gerge s Jesuit Cllege. It is similar t staying in a cllege drm. 1

3 Jamaica VBVC Inf Packet What d we eat? Yu will have a simple breakfast and lunch and a nice dinner. Typical breakfast: tast with butter and jam r peanut butter, cereal, banana, tea, cffee. Typical lunch: Peanut butter & jelly, banana, granla bar. Typical dinner: Assrted Jamaican style dishes (chicken, beef, fish prepared in a traditinal Jamaican manner) assrted vegetables, rice, pasta. It is very easy t be a vegetarian r t g gluten free n ur trips. What vaccinatins d I need? Yu d nt need t have prf f any vaccinatins t visit Jamaica, but the US Department f State & the Center fr Disease Cntrl recmmends that yu have received shts fr Hepatitis A and Typhid. Additinally, they advise the fllwing; Make sure yu are up-t-date n rutine vaccines befre any trip abrad. These vaccines include measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) vaccine, diphtheria-tetanus-pertussis vaccine, varicella (chickenpx) vaccine, pli vaccine, and yur yearly flu sht. D vlunteers ever get sick r injured? If s, what happens? Frtunately, we have nt had any majr injuries r illnesses ver the past five years, but we are prepared in the case f an emergency. The mst cmmn health issues we face which are diarrhea and dehydratin. In the event f a serius r life-threatening injury we wuld ntify the US Embassy and immediate take the vlunteer t University f the West Indies Hspital. We the US Embassy s list f recmmended medical practitiners in the event that a vlunteer had any dental, specialist r pharmaceutical needs during their VBVC experience. We purchase emergency health insurance that wuld enable us t fly a vlunteer hme in the event f a majr health emergency. Hw d we travel when we are n the grund? We travel in private, insured caster buses and vans thrughut the experience. Cntacts and cmmunicatin n the grund in Jamaica: Arrival & cmmunicatin with yur family: When yu arrive in Jamaica yu will walk ff the plane and get in line t have yur passprt stamped. Then yu will mve t the baggage claim area. Once yu get yur bags yu will walk ut the ne and nly exit fr arrivals and will nt be able t miss the VBVC supprt team. We will be there with signage. We will let yu share ur cell phnes t call hme. Our vlunteers share a cell phne thrughut the experience. Internet: We have Wi Fi where we stay, s yu will be able t cmmunicate back hme via the internet in the mrning and at night. Cntinued 2

Yu can t miss us when yu walk ut f the airprt (there is just ne pssible dr fr yu t walk f ut, and we will be there t meet yu!) 08:30 Dinner at St. Gerge s Cllege (This is where we stay & where we run ur High Schl prgrams. We stay in a retreat center with barding rms n campus. St. Gerge s is ne f the tp schls in Jamaica). 09:15 Orientatin Meeting 10:00 Organize dnatin bags 11:30 Lights Out DAY 2 08:00 Wake-Up Call, breakfast 09:30 Depart fr 9 Mile, At. Anne s Parish fr a Rural Cmmunity Develpment Experience. Buy a whistle t use at Vlleyball camp. Yu can purchase whistles in the sprts sectin at Walmart. Granla bars/energy snacks (All yur meals are cvered in the cst f the experience but It is always gd t have an extra Cliff bar r smething similar in yur backpack if yu get hungry in between meals). Drink pwder (Gatrade mix etc). 6 Pairs f Athletic/Vlleyball Shrts & tw pairs f casual shrts. 1 bathing suit. 1 lightweight hdie t keep yu warm in the evenings. 1 thin water repellant cat. 1 pair f Lightweight khaki / nyln pants (Patagnia / Nrth Face type r lightweight cttn khakis r capri pants) 10 T-Shirts (Try t bring sme ld nes that yu dn t mind leaving behind) pairs f underwear Bring 1 pair f cleats, 1 pair f running sneakers, 1 pair f sandals, bring 10 pairs f scks, bringing cleats t play in is ptinal. If yu bring cleats t wear, and yu have tw pairs at hme, definitely bring yur ld pair, and cnsider dnating the ld pair t a Jamaican Vlleyball player at the end f yur trip. Girls shuld avid wearing make-up. 6

8 Jamaica VBVC Inf Packet Medicatin/prescriptins used regularly, be sure that these are in the riginal prescriptin that has yur name and yur dctr s inf etc. (In emergency mst prescriptins can be acquired at Pharmacies in Kingstn.) Eye drps and eyewash if yu have cntacts. Travel sickness medicine (if yu are prne t mtin sickness). Tiletries (Travel size if pssible): Sunscreen, band-aids, dedrant, sap, shamp, tthpaste, tthbrush, tampns. A persnal, travel size first-aid kit (yu can find this in mst pharmacies r at a Walmart type f stre). Msquit repellents cntaining DEET, picaridin, il f lemn eucalyptus (OLE, als called paramenthane-dil [PMD]), r IR3535. Yu can find this in the camping sectin at Walmart. Permethrin Clthing & Gear Insect Repellent (Aersl spray fr yur clthes t repel insects). Yu can find this in the camping sectin at Walmart. Hand wipes and/r antibacterial hand wash.
