1 LaFayette District 2017 Mountain Man Rendezvous Camp Durant / Occoneechee Scout Reservation October 13-15, 2017 Fellow Scouters, Let me welcome you back after a great summer. I would like to invite every member of LaFayette District to the Fall Camporeal. Our theme this year is Mountain Man Rendezvous and costumes are encouraged and rewarded. We will start as the mountain men did by walking to the meeting. Boy Scouts will begin Saturday morning with a 5-mile hike. This will begin at 0630 which will require your Scouters to get up and get moving. The hike will have safeties and water points along the way. Feel free to use this course as a rank requirement hike or add a backpack and use it as a Camping Merit Badge requirement (Maps will be provided but no compasses.) After the hike, the Boy Scouts will get a short break for breakfast before moving into patrol/team events beginning on the Sullivan Center Vista Lower Activity Field. At the end of the afternoon, Troops will be able to select their best to represent them in SPAM tossing contest, eating contest, tomahawk throws, and a canoe race while being cheered on by everybody. Cub Scouts will not be left out. Their program will begin at Cub Scouts will have an opportunity to shoot BBs and Archery while participating in other mountain man type events and crafts. The Boy Scouts will conduct a Campfire program with Skits and Awards. The Cub Scouts will conduct their own Campfire that will include a Mountain Man Costume contest along with Skits and songs. This year we are trying something different. Instead of t-shirts we are passing out to each registered scout, scouter and adults a survival whistle along with a Camporeal Patch. This is something that reduces the overall cost and we are looking for feedback on your thoughts of this versus t-shirts. Historically, the last three years weather has not been our friend. Please prepare your Troops for the chance of cold and rain. This year we are asking for Adult volunteers from each organization to assist in Saturdays events, please identify yourself to me when you arrive. There will be a meeting for all volunteers following Cracker Barrel. Do you have older youth who would like to come and help on staff; we have several youth staff positions available. Please contact me or registrar and we will send them some information. Again, I look forward to seeing everybody at Mountain Man Rendezvous. Charley Coghill Rendezvous Booshway Noun. Our Mountain Man theme adds to the wilderness experience but getting lost does not. Be sure your new families know how to get to OSR/ Durant as GPS and cellular can be spotty at best. Arrive between 8am-9 when we'll meet on the Sullivan Vista flagpoles. Packs and day visitors may park at the Sullivan center lot, and at the BB Range overflow grass lot -look for the circled wagons (camp trailers.) Cars should not be left at campsites overnight. We have a full day planed but meals are your Pack s responsibility. BB gun and Archery stations will be open to registered scouts. * An events schedule will be at camp for unit leaders to help avoid long wait times. *Lion Pilot Program does NOT allow Shooting Sport participation per BSA regulations. The gentlemen from Jim s Gems and Gold in Aberdeen will help us sort and identify cool rocks and minerals at our mining station. Every little mountaineer will go home with "treasure." Extra bags of rocks may be purchased for $10 -cash only, and will more than double your minerals, rocks and semiprecious stones! Recommended for everyone is a Ziploc bag or an old egg carton to keep cubs' newly mined treasures from getting lost. Text how many extra Prospector's kits we'll need to order for you by 9/28/17 -more Rocks, more fun! Other crafts will be hammered out, painted, glued, and ready to go by the end of Saturday. An additional gallon sized plastic bag may help families label and transport incomplete projects or items that have not dried. We will have a few rainy day Stations should the need arise, prepare for weather - whatever it may be. Fun often becomes wet or messy, an extra set of clothes is encouraged even for day visitors. Don't forget to dress the part, Mountain Man/ Frontiersman /Pioneer attire is encouraged for everyone -maybe even rewarded if you participate in our costume contest. Be on the lookout too for animal tracks posted around the Cub activity areas. Field Notebooks for critter tracks you may see can be picked up Saturday morning and checked against the Field Guide in the afternoon. Expert Trackers could win a flint arrow head if they correctly find and identify the animal tracks we post. Rocks, sticks, rope, and fire, what more could a young Mountain man ask for? We'll close out the fun with prizes, songs, skits and S'mores provided at our 5PM campfire! Individuals with food sensitivities should bring their own, and anyone can carry in their favorite roasting tongs. Packs, submit your song or skit to Roger Rose by 4pm. All cub activities will conclude by 6:30pm Saturday. Leaders, please join us at that time for a brief after action and let us know how we did.
