2 What is the Midwest Outdoor Experience Camporee? The Midwest Outdoor Experience Camporee is a District camping event offering fun activities for Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts and Venturers. This event is in coordination with the Midwest Outdoor Experience hosted by Five Rivers MetroParks. Scouts will have the opportunity to participate in activities designed to introduce them to a variety of adventures. This two night campout offers a number of engaging activities throughout the weekend, including canoeing, mountain biking, geocaching, disc golf, slacklining and other activities. Also included are exhibits, demonstrations and classes on the latest gear and techniques. Waivers Remember to download the activities waiver from the Midwest Outdoor Experience website ( and have the parents sign for their scout to participate in the free activities offered by the event. These waivers will be turned in at Information Central at the event (not at the Camporee check-in). Be Prepared (The Boy Scout Motto) We will be using the Boy Scout Oath and Law for our weekend and will follow the Boy Scout Outdoor Code. Scout Oath On my honor I will do my best to do my duty to God and my country and to obey the Scout Law; To help other people at all times; to keep myself physically strong, mentally awake, and morally straight. Scout Law A Scout is trustworthy, loyal, helpful, friendly, courteous, kind, obedient, cheerful, thrifty, brave, clean, and reverent. Outdoor Code As an American, I will do my best to Be clean in my outdoor manners. I will treat the outdoors as a heritage. I will take care of it for myself and others I will keep my trash and garbage out of lakes, streams, fields, woods, and roadways. Be careful with fire. I will prevent wildfire. I will build my fires only where they are appropriate. When I have finished using a fire, I will make sure it is cold out. I will leave a clean fire ring, or remove all evidence of my fire. Be considerate in the outdoors. I will treat public and private property with respect. I will use low impact methods of hiking and camping. And Be conservation minded I will learn how to practice good conservation of soil, waters, forests, minerals, grasslands, wildlife, and energy. I will urge others to do the same.
3 Parking Enter Eastwood MetroPark using the Harshman Road entrance. Each unit will be allowed to have their trailer and tow vehicle at their campsite, weather permitting. No other vehicles will be allowed in the camping area, however parking should be available fairly close by. Cub Scout packs may have two assigned parking spaces on asphalt lots. You may rotate vehicles as needed for loading and unloading using these spaces or you may back in vehicles just off the road at your campsite if space allows. Check-in Units can check in Friday, September 30 between the hours of 5:00 pm and 8:00 pm. Units will not be allowed to set up until they check in. Only the unit leader needs to check in. The check-in area will be under a tent approximately one half mile from the park entrance, clearly marked as Scout Event Check-In. The unit leader will need to provide a copy of the signed and dated tour permit (if required), and a copy of the roster of all scouts and adults present. The unit will be responsible for their own medical forms. First aid Each unit is responsible for providing basic first aid for their Scouts. For severe injuries, call 911. Leadership Each unit must have at least one registered adult leader who has completed position specific training course. Each unit will have a minimum of two registered adult leaders over the age of 21 with Youth Protection Training in camp whenever Scouts are in the campsite. Each unit s leaders and adults are responsible for the actions of their Scouts at all time and units will be held financially responsible for any damages their Scouts cause. Manners a. Any SCOUT who inflicts intentional personal harm on another scout or adult, WILL BE SENT HOME IMMEDIATELY! b. Disruptive/destructive behavior will not be tolerated. c. The unit will be financially responsible for damages to another unit s gear or MetroPark property. d. Scouts must ask permission prior to entering a neighboring campsite. (This allows the leaders/adults of the visited camp to know who is in their camp at all times.) e. Scouts will not cut through camps to get to their campsite (use the road or paths). Scouts will be quiet in camp during lights out. f. Scouts are not allowed to intentionally shine their flashlights into neighboring camps. Remember this is a public event. Scouts will use the buddy system at all times!! Leaders Meeting A leaders meeting will be held at the Scouting fire ring on Friday night September 30 at 10:00 pm. One adult from each unit is required to attend. The leaders meeting is a time for unit leaders to meet and greet other leaders, meet the staff, receive schedules, and discuss any last minute information or concerns the staff or the unit leaders might have.
4 Campsite Information Campsites are assigned based on unit size and needs. All campsites should be kept neat with gear and equipment properly stowed away. We are camping in a public park as part of a popular regional event. Units should follow the OUTDOOR CODE guidelines and leave their campsites in better condition than when they arrived. No on ground fires are permitted. No shelters or picnic tables are provided in the campsite areas. Water Units should plan to provide their own water for the weekend. Although water is available in the main event area this will be quite a distance from the camping area (about a quarter of a mile) and not accessible via motor vehicles. Liquid fuels Each unit is responsible for keeping liquid fuel safe and away from the sleeping areas. Propane is the recommended fuel type to use. Cooking If the unit is planning to use charcoal for cooking, the charcoal has to be off the ground or in the central Scouting fire ring. Cooking fires are not to be left unattended at any time. All ashes should be disposed of in the central fire ring only. Keep an eye on the weather; it may be chilly or wet. We recommend warm drinks, broths, or soup. Scouts love hot chocolate and snacks while on campouts. We suggest you keep an ample supply of both. Do not forget coffee and tea for the adults. Trash All trash must be bagged and may be left near MetroParks trash cans for pickup throughout the day. Please secure all trash overnight to discourage critters from entering the campsites. MetroParks requests that recyclables be separated from trash, if possible. Keep trash to a minimum by using mess kits rather than paper products, cloth towels and wash cloths versus paper towels, etc. Wastewater A 250 gallon wastewater tank will be provided for use by the Scouts and placed in a central location in the camping area. We are anticipating over 300 participants for the weekend. Please plan your meals and cleanup to minimize the amount of wastewater created. Restroom Facilities Portable kybos are available throughout the event grounds. In addition, two kybos will be available at each end of the scout camping area. Smoking and Alcohol Policy The Wright Brothers District Midwest Outdoor Experience Camporee is a smoke free event. The smoking of cigarettes, cigars, pipes, and illegal substances are prohibited. The use of smokeless tobacco is also prohibited. This policy applies to all leaders, parents/guardians, and Scouts. The designated smoking area is located at the far end of the parking lot. The Boy Scout event is also an alcohol free event. All alcoholic beverages are strictly prohibited. This policy applies to all leaders, parents/guardians, and Scouts. There is not a designated area for alcohol use. If a parent appears inebriated, they will be asked to leave.
5 Uniforms Scouts and Scouters are encouraged to wear Class A uniforms (Field Uniform tan or blue BSA shirts, neckerchiefs, and belts) at the event. Class B uniforms (Activities uniform Pack and Troop T-shirts) can be worn while participating in the adventure activities. Clothing Unit leaders need to check the weather forecast prior to coming to the event. Be prepared for the weekend. Bring enough and the right equipment for your Scouts. This is October and the weather can change instantly. Please ensure your Scouts bring appropriate clothing and warm outdoor sleeping bags. The temperature can drop once the sun goes down. Ensure your Scouts bring sweatshirts, light jackets, long sleeve shirts, and long pants, and make sure they wear them. The Scouts will get cold quickly, we would rather see them too warm than too cold. Boots are also recommended because the grass will be wet in the mornings. Water sports are available. Scouts should bring appropriate clothing and a towel if planning to participate in any of these activities. A changing tent is provided near the activity. General rules 1. Sheath knives, candles, firecrackers, explosives, and firearms are not permitted. 2. Unit leaders and parents are responsible for all Scouts during the event. 3. We recommend no eating or food in tents (ants, bugs and critters will visit you). 4. Scouts cannot share medications. The only medications a Scout can carry with them are Epi Pens or rescue Inhalers. 5. Scouts & adults are not allowed to go barefoot. 6. The cutting of live trees is prohibited. Axe yards are not authorized at this event. 7. The buddy system and youth protection guidelines are in effect all times. 8. National and Council policies will be followed. Checkout When a unit has packed up and policed their campsite and is ready to leave, the unit leader will sign out with the Event Leader. If a unit is going to leave before Sunday afternoon, they are to inform the Event Leader at check in (or as soon as possible).
