1 Leader s Guide Highlander District Spring Cooking Camp-O-Ree Camp Reeves April 1-3, 2016 The theme of the Spring Camp-O-ree is Cast Iron Cooking and Saturday s events are designed to build upon one another. We anticipate a fun-filled, exciting, challenging and safe camp-o-ree. Please read this leader s guide in its entirety and be familiar with it before you arrive at Camp. It contains important information that will prepare your leaders and scouts for the Camp-O-ree, as well as enable everyone to have a successful weekend. The Camp-O-Ree will follow the rules of the Guide to Safe Scouting. At least one unit leader must have completed IOLS, and all adult Scouters MUST be Youth Protection trained. All adults should know and follow the guidelines found in the Guide to Safe Scouting and all scouts must follow the Buddy System. The Camp-O-Ree is open to all registered Boy Scouts, Varsity Scouts, Ventures, Sea Scouts and their leaders. Units are strongly encouraged to invite Webelos to join your unit for the weekend as a recruiting event. This camporee is meant to be an activity for older Scouts and not intended for Cub Scouts; therefore, Packs within our district are strongly encouraged to attend the council Cub Event that is scheduled April That event will have activities designed specifically for the Cub Scout Program. 2 Registration Procedures Registration for the weekend is $15.00 per person. Registration deadline is NLT March 17. A camp-o-ree patch, t-shirt and use of facilities are included in the registration fee, each unit will also receive a participation ribbon for their unit flag. Due to the ordering of t-shirts, ON TIME registration is very important along with t-shirt sizes. Registration and payment for the Camp-o-Ree will be accepted at March district roundtable or as coordinated with the Camp-o-Ree registrar or Chairman. Out of district units, please contact the camporee chairman to accomplish the registration. After completing your unit s registration, print out two copies of the completed form. Submit one copy with your registration and retain a copy for your records. Checks should be made out to: BSA, Occoneechee Council. The Camporee Theme: Cast Iron Cooking, Demos, and Fun. Scouts and units are encouraged to begin working on the Cooking merit badge requirements. Blue cards/handbooks will not be signed off by the camp-o-ree staff. This is not a requirement to compete in the Cast Iron Cook Off but the following cooking merit badge requirements CAN be completed during the event 5 A, C, D, E, F if chosen to do so. The Venturing requirements for the Ranger Award Cooking A, C & F CAN be met during the event, if chosen to do so. It will be left up to the individual units to sign off on scouts Blue Cards/Handbooks. Medical Forms Units should bring a current Annual Health and Medical Record (parts A&B) for each participant. The Camporee staff will NOT be checking them, only asking if the unit has the proper forms for each participant. Medical Forms will be kept within easy access by the unit leader in the campsite. If an injury takes place and there is a need to transport the individual to the nearest emergency facility, you will need the forms when you reach admissions. Outdoor Ethics: The Boy Scouts of America has introduced people to conservation, environmental awareness and love for the outof-doors more than any other organization in the world. Leave No Trace, a program adopted by the National Forest and National Park Services, was originally developed by the Boy Scouts of America. The Leave No Trace principles include: Plan Ahead and Prepare, Travel and Camp on Durable Surfaces, Dispose of Waste Properly, Leave What You Find, Minimize Campfire Impacts, Respect Wildlife and Be Considerate of Other Visitors in terms of noise, litter and visual impact. Take only pictures, leave only footprints, is one way of summarizing it. Others have suggested we should avoid leaving footprints, too! Keep this in mind when planning and at the camp-o-ree. How can you lessen your impacted? Trading Post: The Mimahuk Chapter of the Order of the Arrow, will have a Trading Post to purchase Highlander Cups, beverages and snacks. All proceeds are used to support activities of our Chapter. Cash only. 3 Rules 1. Campfires: ABSOLUTELY NO UNATTENDED FIRES in the campsites. We will be following the Be Careful With Fire principle of Leave No Trace. Units are allowed to have campfires within the designated fire rings within their campsites. Appropriate fire rings MUST be used and creating other/new fire rings within in the camp and campsites is prohibited. Keep all fires at a reasonable size; never leave a fire unattended and always provide adult supervision for all fires. Propane stoves, lanterns and Dutch oven tables are permitted. All areas where there are open flames must have two fire buckets; one shovel, one steel rake (part of unit equipment). No flames in tents. Do not cut down live trees. Use Dead, down wood. 2. Water: Water is available near the campsite. Units will need to provide their own water containers. Remember to carry a water bottle during all activities. 3. Shared Facilities: Camporee participants will be camping in designated campsites in close proximity to other units. There are some permanent facilities: picnic tables, fire ring, and a faucet with running water. Unless notified otherwise, do not build any fires outside of the designated fire rings. 4. There will be Porta Johns: placed throughout the camp, there will be some designated for female use only. These are shared facilities by everyone. Please keep them clean and neat.as if you would be the next person to sit down. Do not throw items other than human waste and toilet paper into the Porta Johns. 5. Vehicles: Vehicles will be parked in designated parking areas. Unit trailers may remain in the campsites, but the towing vehicles must park in designated areas. ATV s, golf carts, or other similar vehicles are not permitted at the camporee unless a medical condition requires the use of a vehicle. 6. Weapons: in accordance with BSA policy, no personal firearms are permitted at the camporee. 7. Medical/First Aid: Please remember that Unit Leaders will be primarily responsible for first aid and medical care for their participants. If any medical care needs arise which requires something more than basic first aid, we will have medical personnel onsite at the Headquarters area. If any medical care needs arise that requires a visit to the hospital, unit leaders must notify and coordinate care with the Camporee HQ. 8. Uniforms: Field uniforms are to be worn during flag raising/lowering, Campfire, and Scouts Own Service. Activity uniforms are to be worn at all other times. 9. Pets: Absolutely no pets are allowed. Disability Service animals are permitted. 10. Trash: Troops should provide their own trash receptacles. Troops must completely clean up and dispose of all cooking debris and trash before leaving camp. (Leave No Trace.) Charcoal may only be cool to the touch and thrown in trash receptacles. 11. Rules Violations: The Camporee Chief in consultation with the Staff will determine penalties for any violation of the rules. 12. Lost and Found: Lost and found items are to be turned into and retrieved from the Headquarters Building. 13. Special Unit Equipment: Units are required to ensure that they bring enough Cast Iron cookware for their unit s participation. Units must use the provided fire rings for cooking the meals in to prevent scorching the ground (Leave No Trace). Dutch oven or charcoal cooking stands/tables are allowed. Units will also need to provide a camp stove, pot, skillet, and spatula for program activities. If you don t have such items, look to borrow or buy items.

4 Program 1. Cooking: Patrols will cook Sat. morning Breakfast and evening Dinner in Cast Iron cookware (skillet, flat top, Dutch Oven, as long as it is cast iron cookware). Breakfast and Dinner will be judged using the scorecard located in this handout by Camp-o-ree staff (Judges will eat one serving). Lunch is on your own, does not need to be cooked using cast iron and will not be graded. Units will also cook TWO Dutch Oven/Cast Iron Desserts for Saturday Evening cracker barrel after the campfire program. Units who prepare desserts will get to sample the other desserts and help with the judging. Everyone will get 1 bead to put in the cup of the dessert they like best. Please bring the prepared desserts to the HQ area and ensure that Dutch Ovens are marked with your troop # and dessert title prior to campfire. 2. Events: Travel as Patrols a. Cast Iron Round-Robin demonstrations Saturday morning multiple people doing demos b. Boiled Egg Race Scouts start by building a fire, to boil and cook an egg. When the egg is cooked, the relay race begins. Scouts will hold the egg on a spoon while doing the relay. Scouts will take turns doing curtain legs of the relay. If you drop the egg and it s not hard boiled enough, you lose! (And the course will be difficult enough to where you WILL drop the egg once or twice.) You will need to provide a small pot to cook your egg in. No back packing stoves. c. Pancake Derby Scouts start out by building a fire, cook a pancake, then run a relay while adding the pancake toppings and consume it at the end of the relay. Scouts will take turns doing curtain legs of the relay. You will need to provide a small pan and spatula for your pancake. d. Spam Toss Yes, it is what it sounds like it is (Adult and youth unit leaders). e. Pie Eating contest Yes, what it sounds like without hands. f. Donut on a string Without using any hands eat a donut g. The Price is Right How well do you pay attention to the prices when you shop for items on your Patrol Meal. A scout is Thrifty h. Auntie Kim s Panty A game of memory i. Chicken in a Pot Working as a Patrol, see how many chickens you can get into the pot in a period of time. Need 3 members working with the slingshot and chickens and at least 2 members tied together holding a pot to catch the chickens 3. Campfire Program: Units are encouraged to provide skits or songs for the enjoyment of all at the campfire. Skits and songs must be pre-approved by the camporee chief. The Order of the Arrow will conduct the Ordeal Candidate Call Out ceremony, Arrowmen are encouraged to wear their OA sash for the campfire.

5 4. Cracker barrel: a. Saturday Evening Cracker barrel After campfire the units who prepared the Dutch oven desserts will get to sample and judge the desserts. 5. Awards: For Best Breakfast, Best Dinner, Best Dessert, Games on Saturday. These will be given out Sunday Morning. 6. Spirit Award: Show Scout spirit, demonstrate the Scout Oath and Law all weekend, good Sportsmanship, Competitive Spirit, and participation in the Campfire program.
