3 PLANNING YOUR PROGRAM Scouts like to have fun, do really cool and challenging stuff, go places, and learn new things. That is what we call program, and it doesn't just happen by chance. It takes planning and preparation. Research has shown that a common element of strong programs is a good annual program planned a year in advance that is then shared with all families as a calendar. Use these ground rules while working on your Unit plan, and you can add your own rules too: It is important to respect the views of each other. Listen and don't interrupt. Keep focused on your task to plan your annual program. Don't get sidetracked. Write out your ideas so everyone can see them. Be in agreement. Your plan will be a living, breathing document. For it to have real value, you must follow it, share it, and review it regularly to make any necessary changes. Good luck on another great year, and don't forget to share your plan and calendar with every Scout family! The Greater Los Angeles Area Council has 5 camps for your unit to explore! 9 Advanced Camper Experience We have taken our ACE program to the next level. Our improved program takes older boys (14+ or Adult Leader) and immerses them in fun. They will group up to form their own unit, and will camp together for the entirety of the week. They will not take merit badges, but they will participate in some incredible ACE only activities like: -A horseback overnighter -An overnighter on the iconic Pacific Crest Trail -Mountain Biking -Shooting sports activities such as black powder and tomahawk throwing Exploration Day This has been expanded to include other meaningful scout experiences other than hiking. Hiking is an important part of a scout s development, both physically and mentally, but we understand that units are looking for other ways to check these boxes of development, so we are now offering other opportunities such as: -An all new geocaching trail, that will test your units orienteering and problem-solving skills -A native American and mountain man cultural experience -An immersive wildlife and natural resources experience Shooting Sports Everybody likes to shoot, but let s face it, if you re not trying to qualify for your merit badge on one of the ranges, poking holes in paper can get a bit dull. So, we are making general improvements to our ranges and adding aspects like a roving archery range where you can take your bow onto the trail and practice your skills on different and challenging targets. We are also adding an arcade style shooting aspect to the rifle range where you can shoot at different types of targets that spin, swing and sound off when you hit them! A horse program that is run to ensure safety, while giving scouts an enjoyable and meaningful experience with horses, from the Horsemanship merit badge to horse rides in the afternoon. It is a program that should not be missed. Up on top of the hill at the end of the Wyandot Trail is the often-forgotten Observatory. Here we house one of the premier observation programs in California. This program is assisted by Mike Grow a volunteer that utilizes our state of the art equipment to take scouts to the rings of Saturn and the Moons of Jupiter. Our night sky offers viewing of stars like you cannot experience anywhere else! Page 39

Philmont Training Center The Philmont Training Center (PTC) is the national volunteer training center for the Boy Scouts of America. Since 1950, the PTC has provided a unique environment for training volunteers, creating leaders, and hosting family friendly experiences and adventures. Each year, more than 6,000 Scouters and their families attend the PTC. Every conference at the PTC features tools, techniques, audiovisuals, discussions, idea sharing, and activities led by a faculty of experienced Scouters. All registered Scouters are invited to attend training center courses; council approval is not required. Visit: Northern Tier Northern Tier is the Boy Scouts of America s gateway to adventure in the Great Northwoods. In the summer, Scouts from Northern Tier s three wilderness canoe bases explore millions of acres of pristine lakes, meandering rivers, dense forests and wetlands in Northern Minnesota, Northwest Ontario and Northeast Manitoba. Northern Tier crews paddle in almost 6 million acres of exclusively canoe-access wilderness from the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness (BWCAW) of Minnesota to the Atikaki Provincial Park of Manitoba. Trips range in length from 6-14 days and usually include between miles of wilderness travel. In the winter, Northern Tier is home to the Okpik Cold Weather Camping program, the BSA's premier winter high adventure program. Fall trips are also available. All trips are fully outfitted and provisioned. A highly trained staff member, called an Interpreter, accompanies all crews on their trek. All participants must be age 14 by the time they arrive at Northern Tier OR have graduated from the 8th grade and be age 13 by the time they arrive. Visit: Northern Tier Page Here Page 54

25 NATIONAL HIGH ADVENTURE BASES Florida Sea Base The Florida National High Adventure Sea Base is a unique Scouting program that offers aquatics programs found nowhere else. Whether your interests lie in sailing, scuba diving, rustic camping on an undeveloped barrier island, fishing or a combination of all, this is the place for your Troop, Team, Crew, Sea Ship or Explorer Post. The Sea Base serves around 13,000 participants annually. Sea Base now operates 15 different adventures out of four locations: two in the Florida Keys, one in the US Virgin Islands, and one in Marsh Harbour, Bahamas. Coral Reef Sailing, Sea Exploring Adventure, STEM Eco-Adventure, Scuba Adventure, Scuba Certification, and Live Aboard Scuba Adventure operate in the Florida Keys at Mile Marker 73.8 at Sea Base on Lower Matecumbe Key located 75 miles south of Miami (Lower Matecumbe Key - MAP). Out Island Adventure, Keys Adventure and Florida Fishing programs operate in the Florida Keys on Summerland Key at Mile Marker 23.8 at the Brinton Environmental Center located 125 miles south of Miami (Summerland Key - MAP). (Key West, the southernmost point in the Keys, Florida and the continental United States, is located at Mile Marker zero.) Bahamas Adventures and Bahamas Tall Ship Adventures operate out of the Bahamas Sea Base in Marsh Harbour, Abaco, Bahamas, located about 100 miles east of Fort Lauderdale. Sea Base St. Thomas Adventures operate out of St. John, USVI. Visit: The Summit Situated in the wilds of West Virginia, The Summit is a training, Scouting, and adventure center for the millions of youth and adults involved in the Boy Scouts of America and anyone who loves the outdoors. The Summit Bechtel Reserve is also home to the National Scout Jamboree and the Paul R. Christen National High Adventure Base which complements the three existing bases: Philmont Scout Ranch, Northern Tier and Florida Sea Base. Get ready for the next century of Scouting. With incredible facilities and amazing outdoor programs, The Summit is a place that takes Scouts and Venturers to the limits of what they think they can do, and then pushes them further. The Summit is more than just a place for Scouts; it s where future leaders are shaped. Visit: Page 55
