3 From the Camp Director 2018 Scout Leaders, Welcome to this years RSR 2018 Summer Camp experience! With our 2017 season already wrapped up, Camp Roosevelt and its summer camp leadership team is already in the process of developing 2018 s summer program. We are working alongside our current senior staff team to develop a top-notch staff to plan and deliver 2018 s program. Our leadership team is filled with lifetimes of Scouting experience, to deliver a summer camp program that you and your boys deserve. During the fall months and working into next year, we will be updating the program offerings to meet the changing needs of your Scouts. Adjustments are being made in the schedule to allow more activity time, while maintaining the many merit badges, advancements, and programs available. The Camp Roosevelt staff prides itself on being able to meet the needs of every Scout and we look forward to doing everything we can to make your summer camp experience memorable. Yours in Scouting, Orlando Southerland Camp Director of Camp Roosevelt BOY SCOUTS OF AMERICA Garden State Council 1

5 Camp Staff Each year Camp Roosevelt employs over 60 seasonal staff ranging in age from 15 to well a whole lot older. Most Senior Staff and Area Directors attend BSA National Camping School. All staff participates in extensive training prior to the start of the first summer camp session. The 2018 staff application will be available later this year. Interviews are held annually in January. Some Scouting experience is recommended, but not required. Roosevelt s Rangers Leadership Corps Training Program The Roosevelt Ranger program is for Scouts at least 14 years of age and First Class who have an interest in becoming part of Camp Roosevelt s program staff. This training program provides scouts with an opportunity to be a part of the Roosevelt program staff on a trial basis. Participants live at camp for all five weeks of program and train in leadership and presentation skills while experiencing all areas of camp. During the week, about half their time is devoted to assisting in department work, with the other half available for structured training or to participate in regular camp programs such as merit badges. Scouts participating in this program will grow in scouting skills, responsibility, and leadership, which will hopefully travel back to bolster your Troop s operation. At the same time, Roosevelt Staff will have an opportunity to assess each participant s potential to return as a full-time Roosevelt Staff member. For 2018, the cost for the five-week Ranger Corps program will be $ Payment information will be made available later in Rangers that are selected for the program MUST be able to complete the full five-week program to be considered for selection to the program. Scouts interested in this program for 2018 may inquire via the Garden State Council s website about how to apply. Candidates are interviewed at Camp Staff Interviews held each January. 3

7 New For 2018 Merit Badges and Programs Program Overhauls for 2018 Each summer at Camp Roosevelt, we take a comprehensive look at our programs to see what new and exciting programs and merit badges we can offer for the Scouts. For 2018, we have gone through each of our program areas and redesigned, added and made additions to many of our current programs. Below is a brief list of what we are introducing for 2018: Over 50 Merit Badges to choose from, including 10 new merit badges in the new Arts Department and scattered throughout our other program areas. Enhanced Rough Riders and Scoutcraft program areas under the Outdoor Skills Department. New Trekking Program designed for Older Scouts and Leaders done off-site through the trails of South Jersey. And so much more! As you can see, we have plenty of new programs and activities that we plan to offer at Roosevelt for the 2018 season, so come on out and enjoy the exciting program that we have to offer for this summer! Program Area Highlights for 2018 At Camp Roosevelt, we offer a wide variety of programs for Scouts and leaders of every age, and each of our program areas has their own unique highlights that make them stand apart from the others. Below are some of our highlight programs offered at Camp Roosevelt: Advanced Rifle Shooting Course Aimed toward older Scouts that have completed the Rifle Shooting Merit Badge, the Advanced Rifle Shooting Course teaches Scouts advanced shooting techniques from a variety of positions and styles, along with focusing on the elements that make great marksmen. This is an excellent opportunity for Scouts to test their skills and aim for a chance at earning one of the many NRA medals that Camp Roosevelt offers. The class is offered during 3 rd period at the Rifle Range and has a class limit of 8 Scouts on a first come, first served basis. SCUBA Back by popular demand, Camp Roosevelt will be offering both an Intro to SCUBA program for 2018, as well as a full SCUBA program once summer camp is completed in early August. Trek Program New for 2018, Camp Roosevelt will be introducing a full, off-site trek and hiking experience aimed at older Scouts and leaders coming to Camp Roosevelt. Taking the entire week and highlighting different parts of South Jersey, this new experience will test older Scouts both physically and mentally during the week they are on the trek. *Please note that the 2018 Camp Roosevelt program is in the process of being finalized and that some programs and Merit Badges are subject to change in the final edition. * 5

11 Attending Camp As a Troop Camp Roosevelt offers a traditional experience for Troops to attend camp. Troops are assigned a campsite that serve as their home during their week. Scouts and Leaders will register for camp and their programs online via the unit summer camp coordinator. Troops may sign up for camp by completing & submitting the Declaration of Intent (available on the next page) after September 1 st of Individually The Camp Roosevelt Provisional Program is designed to provide Scouts with the opportunity to attend Roosevelt without their troop. This can be a scout who had such a great time with his troop that he wants to return for an additional week, or a boy who wants to attend Roosevelt even though his troop will not be attending. The program provides a full time Scoutmaster and Assistant Scoutmaster. Scouts in this program are organized into patrols and will function as a troop, electing a Senior Patrol Leader on the first day. In the troop setting, Scouts work to attain their goals for the week. The troop participates in all camp-wide activities and even provides some special troop activities in the Provisional campsite just like a real troop! In recent summers, our Provisional troop has been very successful in inter-troop competitions and individual scout awards and recognitions. Pro-V, as the Provisional program is often called, needs more enthusiastic Scouts to help continue its streak of success. The provisional troop s motto: Pro-V a place to be, Pro-V the place for me. Scouts who are interested in this program will be able to register online starting September 1st of Contact Us Loren S. Riggins Scout Resource Center Rowan Scout Resource Center 4468 S. 12 What does camp cost? 2018 All Inclusive Camper Fees In 2013, the Camp Roosevelt all-inclusive fee was introduced as a means of making the fee structure for camp as simple as possible. As a special thank you for all of the units of the Boy Scouts of America for supporting Camp Roosevelt over the last 90 years, for 2018 we are introducing a new three-tiered system to make it easier for units to send youth to Roosevelt to experience our summer programs. Scouts are considered registered when they are paid for in full at the following rates: Price: Register Dates: $ September 1 st, 2017 December 31 st, 2017 $ January 1 st, 2018 May 15 th, 2018 $ May 16 th, 2018 Day of Arrival at RSR This all-inclusive fee includes all necessary program materials for Scouts to complete their programs. To have your unit qualify for the above rates, a unit must have their 2018 Declaration of Intent filled out and submitted no later than December 31 st, 2017, in addition to registering and paying a $ each deposit for a minimum of 5 Scouts by the specific registration date for the specific price. Additional discounts may apply for Scouts attending Camp Roosevelt for multiple weeks. Adult Leader Fees Two adult leaders are required to be in camp at all times with every unit; two adult leaders therefore may attend Camp Roosevelt for free. One additional free adult is offered for each additional ten youth campers. Any additional adults may spend the week in camp at a significant discount. Number of boys in camp Number of free adults Cost for additional adults $
