3 Cub Safari Fast Facts What will the Cub Scouts be able to do at camp? Cub Scouts, and their parents and leaders, will camp at beautiful Camp Barstow and participate in exciting activities such as: Swimming Boating Bouldering BB Shooting Archery Field Games Arts & Crafts Fishing and more! When is it? July 5 7, 2018 Arrive at 1p on July 5 th Depart by 6p on July 7 th Who can attend? Any rising Tiger, Wolf, Bear, and Webelos Scout as well as all parents and leaders. Where is camp? Camp Barstow is located at 100 Ruby Riser Road, Batesburg, SC How much does it cost? Cub Scouts: $65 Parents/Leaders: $45 Parents/Leaders who volunteer: $35 The fee covers all meals, program materials, a t-shirt and a patch. Can I sign up as a family or do I have to signup as a Den/Pack? You and your Cub Scout can signup individually OR you can signup as part of a Den/Pack. All Cubs will be assigned to a den based on their rank. How can I register? You can register at the Indian Waters Council Office OR you can register online at CubSafari.com. 5 Activity Overview Each Cub Scout will be assigned to a Den based on their rank. Each Den will camp together, eat together, and go to each activity together. Each Den will be able to participate in the following 8 activities while at camp. Most of the activities will allow the Scouts to earn advancements. Swimming - Scouts will be able to cool off and have fun in our camp lake. Note: There are three swimming areas at camp: Non-Swimmer, Beginner, and Swimmer. There is a basic swim test for Scouts (and parents/leaders) who want to swim in the Beginner and Swimmer section. All Scouts, Parents, and Leaders will have the opportunity to go through the test while at camp. Boating - Scouts will be able to canoe and rowboat in our camp lake. At least one person per boat must take the swim test (see above) and be classified as a Swimmer. Bouldering - Scouts will be able to go bouldering on our camp rock climbing wall! BBs - Scouts will be able to learn gun safety and shoot BB guns on our BB gun range. Archery - Scouts will be able to shoot bows and arrows on our camp archery range. Field Games - Scouts will be able to have fun and play traditional field games with a twist! Arts & Crafts - Scouts will be able to show their creative side by creating fun arts and crafts. Fishing - Our camp lake is perfect for fishing. Scouts will be able to learn to fish and can try fishing for themselves. No fishing equipment? No problem we have everything you need. 5

6 Camping At Camp Barstow Check-In Procedures (Den Assignments & Den Chief) When you arrive to camp on July 5 th proceed to the registration tent area near the parking lot. You and your Scout will be assigned to a Den based on your Scout s rank. A Camp Staff member will then help you find your campsite and other Den members. Your Den will also be assigned a Den Chief who will be with your Den during most activities and meals to help the Den navigate camp and be your guide. About the campsites Each Den will be assigned to a campsite. Each campsite will either have canvas tents (already built tents on platforms with two cots in each) or an Adirondack (3-sided building with bunk beds). Adirondacks are for youth only. Adults must stay in the canvas tents (or bring their own tents). Each campsite is close to a private bathhouse that features indoor toiletries and showers. Each campsite also features a covered shelter with picnic tables, lights, and electrical outlets. Buddy System All Cub Scouts will be assigned to a buddy in their Den. All Cub Scouts must stay with their buddy the entire time while at camp. Camp Store We will have a trading post at camp that is stocked with camping equipment, food, snacks, and drinks. Internet Availability Parents and Leaders will have access to the internet at our Parent/Leader Lounge. 7 If you or your Scout has any special dietary needs please contact Adam Lean at (803) or Medications/First Aid We will have trained first aid staff at camp 24 hours a day. They will be headquartered at the O Tuel Health Lodge. All medications must stay in it s original container upon arrival at camp. All prescription drugs must be kept under lock and key either by an adult or at the Health Lodge. A refrigeration for medication is provided as need. Medical Forms All campers (Scouts, Parents, and Leaders) must have completed the BSA Medical Form (Parts A & B) prior to coming to camp. Adult Leadership & Youth Protection All Tiger, Wolves, and Bear Cub Scouts must have at least one adult partner with them. There may be up to four Webelos Scouts for every one adult leader. There can be no one-to-one contact between adults and youth members (unless related). Adults and youth must use separate bathroom and shower facilities. These facilities are clearly marked. In-camp announcements Parents & Leaders will be notified of any announcements in two ways: i. There will be a Den Leader leaders meeting on Thursday night. Only 1 adult leader per Den is required to attend. ii. Daily announcements will be made at all flag raising and lowering assemblies. iii. All adult leaders are encouraged to join the camp Group Me app to get up-to-the-minute announcements and schedule changes during camp. This will be explained at our Leaders meeting on the first night. 7

8 Parent/Leader Checklist Before Camp Register you and your Cub Scout(s) online at CubSafari.com Complete Medical Exam and BSA Medical Form (Parts A & B) Review this Leader/Parent s Guide Pack all items on the What to Bring checklist Ensure that all adults are registered members of the BSA and completed the BSA Youth Protection Training At Arrival to Camp Arrive between 1p and 3p on July 5 at Camp Barstow 100 Ruby Riser Road, Batesburg, SC Check-in at Registration Area near parking lot. Be prepared to: a. Turn in BSA Medical Form (Parts A & B) for each camper b. Show verification of BSA registration for all adults c. Show verification of Youth Protection training for all adults d. Turn in all medications to Health Officer in original container 8

9 What to Bring Sleeping Bag & Pillow (or sheets for twin mattress) Toiletries (shampoo, soap, toothpaste, toothbrush, etc) Swimsuit Closed toe shoes (no open shoes permitted except in showers) Flip flops/sandals for shower Underwear (at least 3 pair) Socks (at least 3 pair) T-shirts (at least 3) (BSA related shirts preferred) Shorts (at least 2 pair) Water bottle (we will provide water) Flashlight Bug spray (no aerosol) Sunscreen Rain Gear/Poncho First aid kit Spending money for camp store ($20 suggested) (Optional) Hat (Optional) Fishing equipment (Optional) What to Leave at Home Firearms Fireworks Large, fixed blade knives Adult beverages Golf cars/atvs/etc. Bicycles Pets 9

10 Other Questions Not Covered Can I drive in camp? For safety reasons we ask that you park in the parking lot during your stay. However, you may drop off equipment during Campsite Setup time. Can Girl Cub Scouts attend? Yes! Can Leaders/Parents participate in activities? Yes! The only exception is BB s and Arts & Crafts. Can siblings (non-scouts come)? No. This event is for Cub Scouts and their leaders and parents only. Can I smoke at camp? You can. However, it is BSA policy to not smoke in the presence of Scouts. Can I come and go during camp? Yes - as long as your Scout(s) have appropriate adult leadership in place and you check in and out of the Camp Office. Can I bring my own tent? Yes! What happens if there is inclement weather?
