2 Are you ready for your adventure? We are looking forward to seeing you and your Den or Pack out at Little Sioux Scout Ranch for Camp Amikaro, Mid-America Council s Cub Resident Camp. Over the last five years at Little Sioux Scout Ranch our Cub Resident Camp has grown. We have added new facilities including a climbing tower, gaga ball pit, and shower house; we even gained a name, Camp Amikaro! Through all of these changes we have remained dedicated to providing an engaging, safe, FUN program for our campers and we continue to uphold the highest values of scouting. In this guide, you will find everything you need to choose the right activities for your Cub Scout, their Den, or the whole Pack. Each activity is explained, first in overview, and then in detail. The registration process is also clearly outlined with a timeline of important camp dates and deadlines. You will also find details on the basic programs you can expect in camp, such as campfires, service projects, movies, and more. We ve included a map, a detailed Class/Activity Catalog, and an Advancement Overview, to help you decide on the best options for the scouts. At Camp Amikaro, you choose the schedule that is right for you. Pick the right amount of shooting, swimming, and climbing for you and your Scout(s), along with featured STEM and Nature programs! Pay close attention to the COLOR of the icon next to each activity; those colors/icons also appear on the map, indicating the part of camp the activity will take place in. 5 Program Overview Cub Scouts and Webelos will be able to choose 6 activities to participate in at Camp Amikaro. Most activities are open to all ages, and Packs who have Cub Scouts of several different ages will be able to participate together. Some activities are limited to Webelos only, indicated in the activity description where applicable. Almost all of the activities will include an opportunity to complete requirements toward rank advancement or other special BSA Awards. In our STEM area, for instance, you will find that activities are designed with a SPECIFIC rank in mind; we encourage you to take advantage of these activities to get a jump on your Scouts advancement. Camp programming is divided into 5 major areas, with 3-6 activities offered in each area. Cub Scouts will be given an hour and fifteen minutes at each of their selected activities. Each activity description will have an icon next to it. Pay close attention to the icon; those icons also appear on the map (page 4), indicating the part of camp the activity will take place in. Schedule activities in nearby areas to limit far travel from area to area. You will be camping in one of the areas marked with the yellow tent icon. When choosing activities, you will select your Cub Scouts activity choices for periods 1 through 4 on Saturday and periods 1 & 2 on Sunday. There will also be free time both days: free time on Saturday will be from 4:30 pm to 5:15 pm and Sunday from 1:45 pm to 3:00 pm. You DO NOT need to sign up for free time activities; your Scout can visit whatever area they would like during those times, or just kick back and relax! All activities have a participation limit. Once a limit is reached, that activity will not be available for registration. If an activity looks full, try adding it to a different period; just because one period is full does not mean they all are. The following pages include a brief overview of the areas and the available activities in each area, along with a notation for Rank Advancement offerings. 5

6 Activity Aquatics Swimming* Boating* (Webelos will have the option to use a CANOE) Fishing* Location Lakefront Cool off this summer at the lakefront. Enjoy a swim or explore the lake in boats with our nationally trained lifeguards. Of course, there are always big fish to catch at our prime fishing spots. Scouts participating in these programs may complete requirements toward rank advancement. Cub Climbing / Games Climbing Obstacle Course Field Games / Slip & Slide^ Frisbee Golf^ Climbing Wall Cub Scouts will be able to climb to new heights at our 25-foot climbing wall. Webelos will then rappel 25- feet down again! Everyone can run the obstacle course, play fun games (including BUBBLE BALLS!), and throw a disc. Our giant slip and slide may be available too, weather permitting. Nature / Ecology South Cabin Trails, Tails, and Trees* This Way to Adventure* What s the Buzz About? ^ There is a lot to see and do on the trails of Little Sioux. Learn how to use a compass and set off on an orienteering course. Take a hike with our Staff, stopping at designated locations to learn something specific to your rank! Tigers, Wolves, and Bears who complete a one-mile hike will walk away with an entire Adventure Loop completed; Webelos who continue down the trail and finish their 3-mile hike will also have a complete adventure! Learn about Native Bees and other pollinators in our area. Help build bee houses, learn how the prairie grasses and wildflowers planted by campers last year to benefit the butterflies will also help the bees. *Denotes rank advancement opportunity for AT LEAST one age/rank group. ^ Denotes that a special award (STEM, Shooting Sports, etc.) requirement may be completed. 6

7 Activity Shooting Sports Archery^ Wristrocket/Slingshot^ BB guns^ Pellet Rifle(WEBELOS ONLY)^ Location Lake Cove Learn the safe handling of shooting sports equipment at our shooting ranges. Then, under the supervision of nationally trained staff, take aim at the target. Some ranges will help Scouts complete requirements toward their Cub Scout Shooting Sports Award. STEM It s All Greek to Me*: TIGERS AND WOLVES High in the Sky*: TIGERS AND WOLVES Building a Bot*: BEARS Adventures in Science*: BEARS AND WEBELOS Challenging the Adventure*: WEBELOS Pavilion At Camp Amikaro, we don t make crafts we build stuff, design experiments, and experience the world. Messengers of Peace Patch During check in and free time there will be a variety of service projects Scouts can participate in; the Butterfly Garden is also a service project. By participating in one of these service opportunities, your Scout will complete their Messengers of Peace patch, available at the Trading Post. Ask the Camp Ranger or Trading Post Staff how you can do some service and earn this patch! SOAR Patch Program Scouts participating in the Butterfly Garden project may complete their SOAR (Save Our American Resources) patch. Patches will be available for purchase at the Trading Post. * Denotes that Rank Advancement opportunity for AT LEAST one age/rank group. ^ Denotes that a special award (STEM, Shooting Sports, etc.) requirement may be completed. 7

8 GENERAL CAMP PROGRAMS Free Time Activities During Day 2 and 3, campers can participate in a lot of fun activities during free time, including Frisbee Golf, sliding on the slip and slide, complete Whittling Chip, or playing games at specific areas around camp. Other activities and programs specific to your session will be shared with you at meals and will be listed on your campsite board. Campfires There will be a campfire program both nights of camp. The first night will include skits and songs presented by the staff. The second night will be open for Packs and Dens to sign up to present a skit or song; please remember to bring any props you may need. Scouts Own Service Saturday evening will feature a non-denominational worship service, open to all campers of all faiths and beliefs. The service will offer thoughtful reflections from a wide range of sources. Cub Scouts and Webelos will be asked to participate in parts, making this truly a Scouts Own service. Night Hike Your first night at camp will also feature a night hike lead by the staff for everyone who wants to see a night view of Little Sioux and the surrounding area. From the top of the Hope Trail you can observe the stars and planets. Flag Retirement Ceremony Sunday night will offer an evening ceremony to honor our Nation s flag, led by our Camp Staff. The ceremony offers reflection on patriotism and respect for the flag, as well as the opportunity for participants to assist in flag retirement. 8

9 How to Prepare for Camp Medical Forms and Physicals Injuries and illnesses at camp are never wanted. However, in the event of an injury we want to provide our campers with the best and most accurate medical care available. At Camp Amikaro we employ a full-time medic during your entire adventure; from the time you check-in on Friday afternoon to the time your adventure comes to a close Sunday afternoon. It is BSA policy that every camper brings with them a completed copy of parts A & B of the Annual Health and Medical Record to Camp Amikaro and have it available at Check-in. Youth Protection at Camp It is the mission of the BSA and Camp Amikaro to create and support a program which upholds safety as its guiding principle. To help ensure the safety of the participants and staff every adult staying overnight at Camp Amikaro is required to have current Youth Protection certification. This is a change from previous years. Youth Protection Training can be found online at my.scouting.org. Please bring a copy of your Youth Protection Training certificate available at check-in. Check-In Procedure Check-in at camp will begin Friday at the Welcome Center at 12:00pm (noon) and end at 5:00pm. During this time you will set up your campsite, activities will be available to you and your scouts around camp, and camp tours will be offered. If you are a Webelos or you are taking a boating class, swim tests will be available during check-in at the lakefront. More information about swim tests is below. At 4:30pm the Leaders Meeting will take place in the Pavilion. You will receive current information about the rules and policies at camp as well as any program changes that might have been made prior to you coming to camp at this meeting. During check-in you will receive your camp t-shirts, patch, class schedule, and advancement guide. Registration Calendar The following is a list of important dates for you to know regarding your Camp Amikaro adventure: March 17 th Parent/Leader Orientation at Little Sioux Scout Ranch March 17 th Class Sign Up Opens April 6 th Campership Deadline May 4 th Early Bird Registration Deadline for June Sessions June 1 st T-shirt Deadline for all sessions June 1 st Early Bird Deadline for July Sessions Registration for your each session closes one week prior to that session. Special needs request forms whether dietary, mobility related, etc are due two weeks prior to your session. The form can be found in the Leader s Guide, online, or can be submitted through your online registration. 9

10 BSA Swim Tests Campers (youth AND adults) participating in the Aquatics program should complete a BSA Swim Test. Tests are offered upon arrival at camp for Webelos and those who are participating in a boating class only. Tests will also be available at the start of each aquatics program period for those who didn t take them during check-in. Completion of this test will dictate the level of involvement allowed by Camp Staff. We WILL accept signed, complete pre-test forms, HOWEVER, Camp Staff may ask to retest ANY CAMPER at ANY TIME to ensure skill proficiency. Camp Staff have the right to limit or deny access to waterfront activities to campers who cannot demonstrate proper proficiency or who are acting unsafe. It is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED that campers take their BSA Swim Test in a lake, as lake swimming can be a different experience than pool swimming for many Scouts. During BOATING programs, every boat MUST have at least ONE SWIMMER (BLUE SWIMMER) LEVEL person (youth or adult) in the boat. Trading Post Our Camp Store offers a wide variety of things, from tasty treats to mementos of your camp experience. Find patches, pins, games, crafts, candy, beverages, camp t-shirts, and more even a few of those items you might have forgotten at home! We will also offer FREE coffee 24/7 at the trading post for adults. 10
