2015 Iroquois District Camporee Theme: 1 st Responders HEMPSTEAD LAKE STATE PARK MAY 15-17,

REQUIREMENTS STAY THE SAME IN 2015 All troops are required to submit on the application the cell phone numbers of 2 adults who will be at the camporee the entire weekend. The reason for this is that it makes it easier to locate the troop or a leader in case of any issue. Theme of camporee is FIRST RESPONDERS. We will have themed events. Troop flags should equal theme NO WEAPONS NO PLASTIC GUNS ALLOWED Council fire - Make all songs/skits about 3 minutes long. They must be original. All troops are expected to have a song/skit. 3 Dear Scouters of Iroquois District: In this booklet you will find all of the information necessary for our 2015 Iroquois District Camporee. Please read everything carefully so if there are any questions they can be answered before you arrive at the Camporee. Again, the Camporee will be held at Hempstead Lake State Park, off of Lake Drive between Peninsula Blvd., Exit 18 Southern State Parkway, and Eagle Ave. Entrance is by the Tennis Courts. See attached maps for exact location. A number of years ago, our district decided to hold the Camporee permanently at Hempstead Lake State Park, as long as the state will host us. The reasoning for this is the central location of the park and the facilities available to us there. Your Camporee committee is hard at work to make this an exciting Camporee for Scouts and Scouters. Since this is an "in district" Camporee there are some situations that are easier while there are others that are different than camping at Schiff Scout Reservation. We don't have car, transportation, or traffic problems so we anticipate large numbers of Troops, Scouts, Scouters, and civic guests as well as friends and family members. This is truly a weekend that "Scouting in Action" will be seen by all. Please tell us immediately if there is something you think we can improve on the spot. Please commend us for the things we have done well. Your Camporee Committee is going to use frequent s (Distributed by Steve Alberts steveoside@aol.com ) to keep you up to speed in all facets of the camporee. Check your often. We will also conduct Camporee planning meetings each month before that month s respective Roundtable meeting. Units should try to have a representative at these meetings. If you have any questions, comments, or suggestions please do not hesitate to call Tom Lerch at or at tomrlerch@hotmail.com See you at the Camporee. Yours in Scouting, Tom Tom Lerch Camporee Chairman tomrlerch@hotmail.com Joe Joe Resch Camporee Chief jreschjr@aol.com 3

We are the guests of the State of New York. Let's show them that we all have "That Scouting Spirit all over us." DO 1. ALL TROOPS ARE REQUIRED TO FILE A LOCAL TOUR PLAN WITH COUNCIL TO ATTEND THE CAMPOREE. This is a rule from national. If a unit does not have a Tour Plan upon arrival at the camporee, they will not be permitted to stay at the camporee. 2. All troops who register by April 1 will receive a Camporee T-Shirt for every registrant. The sizes we will order are adult small, medium, large, XL, XXL, XXXL, & XXXXL T-Shirts can not be guaranteed for late registrants in your troop. 3. Every patrol shall have a flag no bigger than 12 x Each activity will be hosted by a troop. That troop will purchase any materials needed (the Camporee will reimburse), set up the activity, and provide a head judge. 5. Units taking part in the Friday evening Gateway competition MUST register with their initial Camporee application. Rules for the Gateway competition will be included in this booklet. 4

DO NOTS IN ORDER TO MAKE THE CAMPOREE SAFE FOR ALL ATTENDING: SCOUTS CAN TOSS A TENNIS BALL/SPALDING, FOOTBALL, FRISBEE, ETC. IN THE AREA UP ON THE HILL TO THE EAST OF THE CAMPING AREA. THERE WILL BE AREAS TAPED OFF THAT CANNOT BE USED FOR THE ABOVE ACTIVITIES. THERE IS TO BE NO ACTIVITY IN THE CAMPING OR PARKING AREA. SCOUTS ARE NOT TO BRING LACROSSE STICKS TO THE CAMPOREE. IF THE CAMPOREE STAFF SEES THEM, THEY WILL ASK THE ADULT LEADER IN CHARGE TO LOCK THE STICK IN A TROOP VEHICLE. SCOUTS CAN NOT WEAR OR USE INLINE SKATES OR SNEAKERS WITH BUILT-IN INLINE SKATES AT ANY TIME DURING THE CAMPOREE 5

RULES, REGULATIONS, and GENERAL INFORMATION IN ORDER TO USE THE PARK IROQUOIS DISTRICT HAS PROMISED TO DO A SERVICE PROJECT AT THE PARK. THE SERVICE PROJECT WILL BE PERFORMED FROM 9:30-11:15AM ON SATURDAY MAY 16. ANY TROOP THAT DOES NOT PARTICIPATE IN THE PROJECT WILL BE DISQUALIFIED FROM ALL COMPETITIVE EVENTS. AT THE MAY ROUNDTABLE WE WILL KNOW WHAT THE SERVICE PROJECT IS TO ENABLE EACH TROOP TO BRING APPROPRIATE TOOLS. 1. Two Deep Leadership - According to National BSA rules. Every unit must have at least 2 adults (one of whom must be over 21 - the other must be over 18) at the Camporee at all times. 2. Check-In/Logistics - The logistics committee is assigning all sites. Do not set yourself up without checking in to the Administrative area first. If you set up in the wrong place you will be told to move! Registration starts at 5:00 PM on Friday. The logistics staff will be at the Camporee to permit set up to commence at 3:00 PM. 3. Families Visiting - Families and friends of Scouts are invited and encouraged to visit the Camporee on Saturday. They may also stay for the Council fire. We request they leave the park by 10:00 PM or the end of the Council fire (whichever is later.) Please remind them that no alcoholic beverages are permitted, dogs must be on leashes, no littering (throwing papers, cigarette butts, etc. on ground). There will be ample receptacles. Adults should refrain from smoking at the camporee. 4. Webelos are invited to camp at the Camporee. The Webelos Patrol will be in its own site adjoining an appropriate troop. The standard adult/webelos ratios apply. Webelos may participate in the events. They will be judged for fun only. Tigers, Wolfs, Bears, and Webelos may visit the Camporee on Saturday from 9 AM until the end of the Council fire. 5. Prominent Visitors - Many government and civic leaders have been invited to the Camporee to see "Scouting in Action". Tell your scouts about courtesy. Tell them to answer any questions they may be asked by our guests. 6. Publicity - We hope to have local newspapers covering the Camporee. Give the Scouts the same rules as the prominent visitors. See Rule #5. 7. Uniforms - Full uniform (shirt, pants, neckerchief/bolo) will be worn at times designated. They will definitely be required for Saturday flag lowering, religious services and the OA callout. The uniform for Saturday and Sunday morning will be as close to a "Class B" uniform as possible. (Camporee tee shirt, scout pants/shorts, etc.). Points will be taken off Inspection scores for troops not in proper uniform! 8

8. Medical Forms and First Aid All troops must have the official BSA Medical Forms Parts A & B in their possession at the camporee. (National rule). Go to TRCBSA.ORG to download the current form. All Medications that a Scout has at the camporee must be in its original container with proper dispensing instructions. Scouts may NOT keep their own medications unless it is an asthma inhaler or an epi pen. Medications must be kept by a troop leader. All first aid problems must be reported to the First Aid Staff immediately regardless of how minor the injury seems to you 9. Patrol Site Inspection - Your patrol sites will be inspected on Saturday. 10. Patrol Sites - Set up as a model. Site work should be done by the boys-not adults! 11. Skill Trail Equipment - Each patrol must have at least one compass and Scout handbook with them on the Skill Trail. If you do not have the compass and handbook the patrol will lose points. The materials needed in the Skill Trail will be supplied. 12. Cleanliness - All Troops are of course responsible for leaving their campsites in a better condition then when they arrived. Remember...we are the guests of the State of New York. Keep your new country clean. 13. Dumpsters - There will be dumpsters in the parking field. Use them. Bring your own garbage bags! 14. Lake & Reservoir-All water areas in the park are off limits unless told otherwise. Anyone found in the water will cause his unit to be sent home. 15. Checkout No troop may leave the camporee without being inspected. Patches will not be given out until after inspection. 16. Order of the Arrow - The Order of the Arrow will be helping to staff the Camporee. We will need the help of any Order of the Arrow member who is not a Patrol member during the Skill Trail. Please tell the Order of the Arrow brothers in your troop to bring and wear their sashes. 17. Senior Scouts - We will also need the help of any non-patrol members of your troop who are not in the Order of the Arrow to assist on the Skill trail. 9

18. Council Fire There will be an Order of the Arrow call out. Every troop must make up AN ORIGINAL song or skit. It should not be longer than 3 minutes. Skits should be prepared prior to the camporee. All troops should be prepared to do a run-through of their skit on Friday Evening with a camporee adult staff member. No water may be used in skits. 19. Restroom - Let's keep these facilities clean. Remind the boys that they must use the facilities.--no trees or bushes! Each troop will be assigned a time period to clean and keep the restrooms clean. A troop adult must accompany the Scouts to the cleaning and make sure they do it properly. 20. Water - Water is available at a spigot outside the restrooms. Dish washing and cleaning must be done back at the site. 21. Cars - The farthest any site will be from the parking lot is about 300 feet. Adults are requested not to go to their cars between 11:00 PM - 7:00 AM on either day. The constant door slamming is an annoyance to those trying to sleep. Parking will NOT be enforced across the walk bridge on Lakeside Drive or Broadway. ALL PARKING MUST BE IN THE PARKING FIELD. YOU MAY PARK ON THE SIDE OF THE ROAD OR PARKING FIELD FOR LOADING AND UNLOADING ONLY. THIS IS FOR NOT MORE THAN 15 MINUTES. 22. Security - State Park Police, Rockville Centre Police, Nassau County Police, and State Police will be patrolling the Camporee. As per scouting rules there must be an adult in the site at all times. 23. Cooking - Cooking will be by charcoal or propane. Propane is permitted with proper supervision - standard Boy Scout rules. There are some concrete fireplaces, as well as standup charcoal "pits" for cooking and cooking only! Firewood is not available. Unit campfires are not permitted in New York State Parks. NO COUNCIL FIRES ARE PREMITTED IN THE CONCRETE FIREPLACE 24. Alcoholic Beverages/Smoking - No Alcoholic beverages are permitted! If any are found the troop will be asked to leave the Camporee immediately! Scouts are not permitted to smoke! Adults should refrain from smoking. ADULTS ARE NOT TO SMOKE IN FRONT OF SCOUTS! (This is a National Boy Scouts of America regulation.) 25. Cracker-barrel - Details will be announced upon arrival Friday. 26. Behavior - All Scouts and Scouters attending will be responsible to conduct themselves in a Scout-like manner at all times whether in uniform or not. 27. Age - Participants in Camporee must be born on 5/16/94 or after. (If a scout turns 18 during the Camporee weekend he may participate.) 10

28. Judges - The commissioner staff and Sagamore Service Troop will be our judges and scorekeepers. 29. Flags - Bring Troop and American flags to opening and closing ceremonies. 30. Patrol Flags - Each patrol's flag should be with their patrol at all times. 31. Religious Services - There will be a Catholic Mass with a priest presiding, a Jewish Service, and a Protestant Service. All troops are required to attend a religious service. Family members who are visiting may attend services. 32. Tables - There are ample picnic tables available. Troops should supply extra tables, chairs, etc. Troops must supply a folding table for the cook-off. 33. Tardiness - There will be points taken off scores if the troop is late for a ceremony or the Skill Trail. We are on a very tight schedule. 34. Boy Participation - Scout Leaders are responsible to assure that all members of the Unit participate or are otherwise occupied during the Skill Trail on Saturday. Scouts who are found outside park grounds during the camporee will be asked to leave the camporee immediately. 35. Boys Coming & Going during the Weekend - We understand that the Scouts are in many other activities besides Scouting and there will be conflicts. Since this is an "in-district" Camporee we know that Scouts will be leaving the Camporee for a few hours for another activity and then coming back. There is no reason why every boy in every troop cannot attend the Camporee. It is the unit leader's responsibility to know how many Scouts are in the park at all times! 36. Saturday only troop's - No!!! Troops cannot come just for the day on Saturday without staying over! 37. Safety Reminders - No open flames (this includes candle lamps) in tents! 38. HAVE FUN!!! - Remember... Scouting is a three letter word...fun SATURDAY LUNCH WILL BE A CAMPOREE-WIDE HOT DOG LUNCH. THE CAMPOREE WILL SUPPLY HOT DOGS, CONDIMENTS, CHIPS, ETC. UNITS MUST SUPPLY THEIR OWN DRINKS. ON SUNDAY MORNING THERE WILL BE A CAMPOREE-WIDE BAGEL BREAKFAST. COFFEE, TEA, & OJ WILL BE THE BEVERAGES. TROOPS CAN USE THIS AS THEIR BREAKFAST OR AS A SUPPLEMENT. 11

CAMPOREE SKILL TRAIL The events will be forwarded to you by mid-april. There will be a Scout cook off event. JUDGES GENERAL INSTRUCTIONS FOR THE SKILL TRAIL: Patrol Method is favored by this scoring method, rather than individual ability. A patrol will not earn as many points if one boy does all or a majority of the skill. Please be aware that points will be given out for leadership, participation, and skill.. 12
