2 Page 2 Cumberland District SPRING CAMPOREE, 2013 PAUL BUNYAN WOODSMAN Where: Camp Pellissippi When: April 12-14, 2013 Who: Boy Scouts, Venturers, and Second Year Webelos Cost: $10 per person (Scout, Youth, or Adult) Contact: Chris Rogers, or scouter622@gmail.com Check-in: 6:30 pm Departure: Sunday after Chapel Class A Uniforms are required for flag ceremonies, campfire, and Chapel. Worship Service: There will be no movement of vehicles in camp until after the service is completed. Campfire Program: Have skits and songs ready to perform! Conduct: Remember to always follow the Scout Oath and Law, whether you are a Scout or an Adult Leader. Do not enter another Troop s campsite without asking permission; respect one another s property. A SCOUT IS COURTEOUS NO ENTRY OF CAMPSITES WITHOUT PERMISSION. Camporee Patch: Each scout and registered leader will receive patch when a patrol roster is submitted at registration. Tour Permit: Turn into Council minimum of to 2-weeks prior to event. Have copy with you in campsite.

4 Page 4 PROGRAM THEME: PAUL BUNYAN WOODSMAN Requirements for the Paul Bunyan Woodsman award: Study the Boy Scout Handbook and the Camping merit badge pamphlet, and demonstrate to your Scoutmaster or other qualified person the following: 1. Show that you have earned the Totin' Chip. 2. Help a Scout or patrol earn the Totin' Chip and demonstrate to him (them) the value of proper woods-tools use on a troop camping trip. 3. With official approval and supervision do ONE of the following: a. Clear trails or fire lanes for 2 hours. b. Trim a downed tree, cut into 4-foot lengths and stack; make a brush pile with branches. c. Build a natural retaining wall or irrigation way to aid in a planned conservation effort. Totin Chip will be presented for the less experienced Scouts. More experienced Scouts may have to sit through the instruction, but can assist by being an active listener and assisting the instructor in helping their fellow Scouts in attaining Totin' Chip as the Perimeter Trail is worked in the afternoon. If Scouts receive credit for assisting their fellow Scouts (identifying safety hazards and assisting in demonstrating proper use of wood tools) during the instruction or the trail work, and participate in the service project, the instructor will get their name and recommend them for the Paul Bunyan Woodsman award. Troops are encouraged to bring wood tools such as axes, saws, hatchets, etc. Use of chainsaws can only be done by those ADULTS with the proper BSA training.

5 Page 5 EVENTS Chariot Race Construction of the Chariot: There are various patterns and designs for the construction of the chariot. But before we let things get out of hand, the rules for this camporee are: No wheels. No horses. No motors. No grown ups. It is to be constructed out of wooden poles and lashings in some pattern you think will work. You bring the poles and rope, but it has to be assembled ON THE RACING FIELD! This is a timed event from the beginning of the construction to conclusion of the circuit. As many boys can help build it as possible, but two boys drag from both sides while one boy rides. It drags on the ground. You must complete the circuit without the chariot disintegrating in order for your time to qualify. Lash the sucker tight and hold on for your life. If she goes down, go down with dignity. No whining. Shotgun Patrols shoot at clay pigeons on the shotgun range. Best average wins. Orienteering Using a map and compass Scouts will run a compass course for time. Best time wins.

6 Page 6 Order of the Arrow Call out for OA Candidates will be at the Campfire. Scoutmasters with candidates being called out need to contact the OA Advisor regarding this event. Order of the Arrow Spring Ordeal: 5/17/2013-5/19/2013, Camp Buck Toms Order of the Arrow Fall Ordeal: 8/9/2013-8/11/2013, Camp Buck Toms Order of the Arrow Fall Fellowship: 9/13/2013-9/15/2013, TBD, but probably Camp Buck Toms. (It has been at Pellissippi before.) Membership The OA has more than 170,000 active members located in lodges affiliated with over 295 BSA local councils. Eligibility The Order of the Arrow membership requirements are: Be a registered member of the Boy Scouts of America. After registration with a troop or team, have experienced 15 days and nights of Boy Scout camping during the two-year period prior to the election. The 15 days and nights must include one, but no more than one, long-term camp consisting of six consecutive days and five nights of resident camping, approved and under the auspices and standards of the Boy Scouts of America. The balance of the camping must be overnight, weekend, or other short-term camps. Youth must be under the age of 21, hold the BSA First Class rank or higher, and following approval by the Scoutmaster or Varsity team Coach, be elected by the youth members of their troop or team. Adults (age 21 or older) who are registered in the BSA and meet the camping requirements may be selected following nomination to the lodge adult selection committee. Adult selection is based on their ability to perform the necessary functions to help the Order fulfill its purpose, and is not for recognition of service, including current or prior positions. Selected adults must be an asset to the Order because of demonstrated abilities, and must provide a positive example for the growth and development of the youth members of the lodge. Induction The induction ceremony, called the Ordeal, is the first step toward full membership in the Order.

7 Page 7 Campsite Inspection Form-Post in Camp- (Part 1) Unit SPL Location: CAMP PELLISSIPPI UPGRADES Some adirondacks may be available for use at Camp Pellissippi for this Camporee. In addition, there is a Camp Bath-house with flush toilets and heated showers. With the added perks come added responsibilities. Like Camp Buck Toms, troops may want to hang a tarp in front of the doors. Do not hang hammocks or tie off any fly or structure to the adirondacks. Use of the bath-house should be kept at a minimum, and boys are not to use it as a play-house. Scouts hiding at the bath-house during program activities will be reported to their Scoutmaster. Vandalism of any kind will be charged to the Troop. Pre-Inspection: The Scoutmaster, Senior Patrol Leader, Campmaster will identify any issues (broke stuff, trash, etc.) that was there when they arrived. It is understood that it will take you a while to get set up. Campsite Inspection Each unit will start with 100 points. Deductions will come from the categories listed below. 8 Page 8 Campsite Inspection Form-Post in Camp- (Part 2) Unit SPL Location: The following form will be turned in to the inspector at the Campsite inspection on Saturday, and will be given to the Campmaster for inspection Sunday. POST-INSPECTION, COMPLETED BY THE CAMPMASTER Dispose of Waste Properly (DEDUCTIONS ONLY FOR THIS!) Pack it in, pack it out. Inspect your campsite and rest areas for trash or spilled foods. Pack out all trash, leftover food, and litter. If a cathole (that s pronounced KAT-HOLE ) is used, deposit waste in catholes dug 6 to 8 inches deep at least 200 feet from water, camp, and trails. Cover and disguise the cathole when finished. Pack out toilet paper and hygiene products. Minus 5 points for each violation. Carry wash-water 200 feet away from streams or lakes. Scatter strained dishwater. Hint: It will be obvious by the soap-suds. Respect Council Property Damage or vandalism will be charged to the unit.

Fri Dinner Wash hands, determine recipes, assign responsibilities to assistant cook, prepare meals, advise Patrol when meal will be served, Ensure all utensils used for cooking are clean. Assistant Cook Sat Breakfast Sat Supper Assist with meal preparation as determined by cook, prepare hand washing station with warm water and rinse water (use same tubs used for cleanup), boil water for cleanup. Sun Breakfast Fire Builder Other Duties as Assigned: Arrange or clean fire pit in accordance with Scout policy. Find and stack wood needed for fire or start charcoal if needed. Ensure fire buckets are full (water and dirt). Keep fire going throughout meal. Ensure fire is completely out when no longer needed. Water Man Keep water jugs full and refill when needed. Fill fire buckets (Fire Builder will double check, but primary responsibility belongs here). Purify water if fresh water is not available. First Aid Administer first-aid to minor scrapes and injuries as needed. Site Clean-Up Set up and secure camp gadgets. Secure garbage bags at night and start new one when current one is full. Responsible for Ax yard Campsite breakdown is the responsibility of the entire troop as directed by SPL and PLs. Final action before leaving is to form police line and do a final scan for trash.
