MESA 4 WHEELERS HORN NEWSLETTER January 2019 Mesa 4 Wheelers, PO Box 107, Mesa AZ MESA 4 WHEELERS STAFF President Lee Coppage Vice President Bill Mihailov Secretary Pat Jenkins Treasurer Ray Jenkins Corres.Secretary Hazel Hart Membership Lori Moore Editor Mike Drawsky Remembrance Gert Leible Trophies Clete Hruska Safety Chairman John Hart Publicity OPEN Next Meeting January 18, 2019 Third Friday of every month, 7:00 PM. Bass Pro 1133 North Dobson, Mesa, AZ (602) PRESIDENT'S CORNER Former club President, Bill Mikhailov, will be filling in for Lee who is currently receiving medical treatment. Your Prez, Lee Coppage (Lonewolf) REMEMBER WHEN? 30 years ago? January 1st, 2nd & 3rd, 1989 Mexico Main Trip Trip Leader: Jack McCullen Tail End: Todd McCullen The initial group of six vehicles pulled out of the Firebird Raceway meeting point at 10:35 A.M. on Friday morning (12/31). We arrived in Lukeville at approx. 1:30 PM. We shortly found out the only camping allowed was in the National Park campground or the Lukeville campground with no fires. After several phone calls to Phoenix to determine the arrival of the rest of the pack it was decided to cross the border and camp at the turn off point approximately 40 miles from the border crossing. Jack and Sandee stayed in Lukeville to wait for those coming later. The Jenkins rolled in about 5:30 P.M. and joined us for dinner at the luscious? Lukeville Cafe and wait for the rest of the group expected at 8:00 PM. The second group of seven vehicles showed up about 8:30. They gassed up, crossed the border and headed for camp along with Ray & Pat. Two more members were not coming until the next morning. Jack & Sandee decided to really rough it and set up camp at the Gringo Pass Motel. The next morning with the last two arrivals we gassed up and crossed the border and headed for camp. We met our group around 9:00 A.M. and 15 vehicles pulled out at 9:30 A.M. WE RE ON OUR WAY!!! Dick (Dr. Deek) Williamson took Trip Leader position. Jack (Happy Jack) McCullen took Center and Todd (Gas Gauge) McCullen took Tail End. We ate A LOT of dust for a few miles but then traveled through beautiful lava flows prior to arriving at the sand dunes. Our first challenge was a large sand dune called FOUR PEAKS. Several tries by many resulted in backing down. Dave (Rebel) Bumpass was the first to make it (First Try) with ease! First tries took Wayne (Rowdy Dog) and Kirk (Star Trek) to the top! Todd (Gas Gauge) took several tries and finally made it! Bill had no choice with Wayne laughing at the top and made the ascent with his Jeep roaring all the way! The rest of us had to throw in the towel and go around. We were moving right along when Dr. Deek lost his transmission in the middle of the dunes...well, our dunes trip quickly became a CHALLENGE!!! Mr. Bill and Mikey P. (Mad Russian) pulled out the tug straps and hooked on to Dr. Deek...With two tow vehicles they kept Dr. Deek moving. We set up camp in the dunes at sunset. We had Campfire Stew! Everyone poured in a can of vegetables and we also had a side of tortillas and bread. Interestingly the HUGE POT of stew mysteriously disappeared!!

REMEMBER WHEN? 30 years ago? (Continued) We celebrated the New Year arrival around a campfire with friends and fireworks!!! THE 4 WHEEL COMMUNITY LOSES ONE OF IT S STRONGEST SUPPORTERS Dawn brought another beautiful day and a continuing Challenge... Rebel and Greg (Teddy Bear) took scout position and blazed a trail. A few trail issues, but our scouts did a good job! Happy Jack and Gas Gauge took over tow position after an hour or so. Ray (Sandman) Jenkins stayed just ahead of tow to give a visual guide...thanks Sandman! We could see the Village of Lopez Colada...just weren t sure how to get there. With perseverance in abundance we went for the last dune. It took us a while as Dr. Deek lost a tire from the rim so upon finally getting all vehicles to the top, the tire was fixed and on our way. We arrived at Lopez Colada expecting to hand out candy and fruit to the children, only to find a deserted village. So, we went on to the beach. WE ARRIVE AT THE BEACH!!! Mike Jerger took over tow vehicle and we all headed up the beach towards El Golfo. Mike s engine was over heating, so Mr. Bill took over tow. We continued towards El Golfo coming upon a group of Mesa 4 Wheelers in a circle looking over their vehicles. They had been clipping along the water-line and came upon a dip which sent them all air born!! The vehicles seemed OK with minor problems. Some welding on spring shackles may be needed. We arrived at El Golfo. We set up camp at Light House Hill with big expectations of having a good meal at the Cantina. WRONG...everything in town was closed. Well, we did the second best thing and purchased 16 kilos of shrimp, numerous cases of Corona and fresh rolls and headed back to camp to cook shrimp. Howie (Brown Bomber) Losey and Susie took over the huge job of Camp Chefs and produced a fantastic meal! Sandee McCullen, longtime OHV supporter, and Life Member of the Mesa 4 Wheelers, passed away last Sunday night (01/13/19). Monday morning we SLOWLY crawled out of our sleeping bags, fixed breakfast, packed gear and headed for home about 12:30 PM. Arriving in San Luis to find a two hour wait at the crossing. We did put a smile (or frown) on several inspectors faces when we were questioned as to why numerous M4W vehicles were being TOWED across...no GAS!! Anyway, we re across to the U.S.got U.S. gas and headed for Yuma to eat. Steve (Wendle) towed Dr. Deek with Double Knarley running tail end with them. Rebel and Teddy Bear ran ahead and the rest were rolling about 45 minutes behind. Amy Mihailov (H.B.) kept us all going with some very Strange Knock-Knock Jokes! Carrying over a quote from Howie...DAMN WE RE GOOD! Written by Jack and Sandee McCullen Edited by Ray Jenkins Whenever there was a need for someone to step forward in support of our sport, Sandee was always one of the first to respond! She was an active member of a number of OHV organizations (National Off-Highway Vehicle Conservation Council, Off-Highway Vehicle Advisory Group and Arizona State Association of 4 Wheel Drive Clubs) and worked with state and regional officials on off-road land-use issues for years. Those who have had the privilege to have worked and wheeled with her and Jack, know how much she will be missed.

CLUB TRIP REPORTS Tortilla Trail Run & Potluck at Dave & Paula s Trip Leader: Dave Brown Members in attendance: Bill & Amy Mihailov, Harold & Jeri Liberman, Jim & Wendi Kawa, Walter & Gert Leible, Clete & Randi Hruska, Mike & Linda Drawsky, Bill & Charlotte Murray, John & Hazel Hart, Glenn & Terri Luce, Bob Williams, Keith Fliegel, Guests in attendance: Larry & Donna Coe and Kelly & Kim Calvert, Jim Hopper, Paul & Joanna Hutchinson, The Tortilla Trailhead was a 20-mile drive from the Ghost Town of Goldfield along the historic Apache Trail. The weather and participation for Dave Brown s Saturday run could not have turned out any better! With 25 vehicles in attendance, Dave had to change today s original destination, Black Cross Butte, to Tortilla Trail due to a limited amount of space at the end of the trail. Gert & Randi catching up on things Airing down at the Tortilla Trailhead staging area

Tortilla Trail Run (Continued) Bill, Keith and Gert carrying on a friendly conversation while waiting for the rest to finish airing down. Harold puts his air gauge away while Walter reminded him everyone else is ready to go! Heading down the Tortilla Trail, on Service Road 213 Looks like everyone is aired down and ready to go! The trail runs for about 3 miles before ending at an abandon cattle watering trough. Trip leader, Dave goes around checking to make sure everyone is ready to hop in their vehicles and head down the trial.

Tortilla Trail Run (Continued) Bill loves living on the edge! Whichever path is the most difficult, that is the one Bill will follow! Guests, Kelly & Kim both drive 4-door Suzuki Sidekicks. Kelly shot a number of good trail photos, capturing Kim s Sidekick. At around 1:30 most everyone had made their way to Dave & Paula s house for a delicious hot dog barbeque. Before filling our stomachs, Bill said a prayer.

Tortilla Trail Run (Continued) This was the third year in row that Dave & Paula had led a half day run, followed up with a get-together barbeque at their lovely Apache Junction home that backs up to the Superstition Mountains. Donna, her twin sister, Darlene and Jim enjoying a delicious hot dog and the day s great weather. Dave and Paula s backyard makes for the perfect gathering spot! No shortage of deserts! Lin was quite content to sit back and just soak up the good weather!

Tortilla Trail Run (Continued) FUTURE TRIPS & EVENTS Wickenburg to Yarnall The Back Way Trip Leaders: Mike Drawsky & Jim McKaskle Contact # (480) When: January 19 th Meet: Denny s, 1010 N Tegner St, Wickenburg, AZ Start Time: 8:00, pull out 9:00 Finish Time: 4:00 Rating: 2.5 Details: Stops along the way: Wickenburg Massacre Site, Octave Mine Tour, Stanton Ghost Town & Yarnell After leading the day s run and manning the barbeque, Dave, finally found some time to sit down and catch up with Paul & Joanna. The Wickenburg Massacre occurred on November 5, It was the mass murder of six stagecoach passengers en route from Wickenburg westbound for California. Around midmorning, about six miles from Wickenburg, the stagecoach was attacked by Yavapai warriors from the Date Creek Reservation. By the look on Charlotte s face, Paul must have told a joke Rich Hill in the Weaver Mining District, one of the most active mining districts in Arizona. On the right side of Rich Hill is the Octave mining property and on the left side is the ghost town of Stanton. After a couple hours of good food and conversation, it was time to load up and head home. Thanks Dave & Paula for hosting another fun run & gettogether!

FUTURE TRIPS & EVENTS Wickenburg to Yarnall The Back Way (Continued) Humbug Open House, Bradshaw Mtn. Trip Leader: Mike Drawsky Contact # When: Saturday, March 3 th Meet: 8:00 for Denny's, Carefree & I-17 Pullout: 9:00 Return: 5:00 Description: Caretaker, Dave Burns, gives a once a year public tour of Humbug and shares his knowledge of this Historic Arizona Ghost Town. Great food, good times and fun facts are the highlight of this exceptional event. Once known as Antelope Station, Stanton experienced gold rush fever in 1863 in the form of a gold strike. What was once a stage stop transformed overnight into a western boomtown thanks to its rather large deposits of gold. Located about twenty miles north of Wickenburg, Stanton is, today, part of an RV park, but still retains its ghostly allure for travelers in search of an authentic Arizona ghost town experience. Granite Mountain Hotshots Memorial State Park was dedicated in 2016 as a place to remember the 19 Granite Mountain Hotshot Firefighters who were lost on June 30, 2013, while fighting the Yarnell Hill Fire. Cochran Trip Leaders: Jim McKaskle Contact # (480) When: February 16 th Meet: 8:00 McDonald s Restaurant, 801 AZ-79, Florence, AZ Pullout: 9:00 Finish Time: 4:00 Rating: 2.5 Description: Jim McKaskle, whose father was a bulldozer operator for the Southern Pacific, will be sharing with us his childhood memories of what it was like living in a boxcar along the railroad tracks in the old mining camp of Cochran, Arizona. Cochran is located about 20 miles east of Florence, along the Gila River, Sante Fe, Prescott, Phoenix railroad. The town supported about 100 people and had a general merchandise store, boardinghouse, and many other establishments. Today all that remains are the coke ovens across the river. The town was named for John. S. Cochran, the first postmaster. To learn more details on this historic mining town, go to the following website: s.htm 41 st Annual Amy s Campout (Box Canyon Area) Trip Leader: Bill & Amy Mihailov Contact # When: March 15 th - 17 th Box Canyon area, Florence, AZ Please bring everything you need for your camping experience!
