We have already completed three projects and upcoming is the annual Swift Dam Poker ride August 4 th and the Lange Creek project on August 23 rd to the 25 th. A few members are headed up to Swift Dam on Friday the 2 nd of August. There will be a work project on Saturday the 3 rd with trail maintenance. If you are planning to help on Saturday, please let Debbie Ries know for food planning. We can also use some help with the stations on Sunday and the BBQ afterwards. Chef Ron will man the hamburgers. The 1st cutting of hay is in the stack and it is now time to head North to Alaska to fish with the Facklam s. LeAnn and I will be traveling through British Columbia and do a scenic tour with directions from our tour director Ron Ries. We hope to have fair weather and a successful fishing experience. Hopefully we will have stories and pictures to share at the next meeting on August 8 th. Safe travels to all who are heading out for a summer adventure and see you when we get back. 2 HAPPY BIRTHDAYS JULY 2013 Bob Hermance, Brenda Ries And Ron Ries HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO ALL East Slope Back Country Horsemen Regular Meeting July 2, 2013 Meeting was called to order by President Bob Hermance at 7:06 PM. Fred Fitzpatrick moved to accept the minutes as published in the newsletter, motion carried. Treasurer s report there were three checks written, checking balance is $37.84 and savings $5,052. Bills presented were Connie Manning for $198.80, for Poker Ride posters $10 and Blacktail Gulch food, $ Connie Manning moved to accept the treasurer s report and pay bills, Debbie Ries 2 nd the motion, motion carried. State Report: Fred had the minutes of the BCHA There will be a weed whacker rodeo July 13 th at Gibson Dam. A benefit for Dave Schliz, past president of BCH of MT, is asking for donations of used tack. Anyone wishing to make a donation contact Fred for more information. Clete gave an update on the Cabin Creek project and a review of the paperwork requirements that we should be aware of. Everyone on the work project initials the safety briefing and they also need to initial the hazard awareness briefing form. One issue was the logs that were felled for the project were below the trail. Thanks to Zane Drishinski for his hard work. Connie recommended we purchase 4 anodized aluminum dutch ovens for the club. 1-14, 2-12 and Connie moved that we purchase the dutch ovens, Ron Ries 2 nd the motion, motion carried. Connie and Debbie will research the ovens and get them ordered. Next project is the Pretty Prairie trail maintenance, July th. Ron and Debbie Ries and Fred Fitzpatrick to be project leaders. Trails to be worked on are Prairie Creek #262, Windfall Creek #265 and Goat Creek #249 and camping will be at Pretty Prairie. Please contact Ries s at or Fred at if you plan on going for food planning. The Annual Swift Dam Poker ride is August 4 th at Swift Dam. Trail maintenance will be Sat. Aug. 3 rd. Connie brought the posters and we need to get the door prizes collected. Door prizes can be given to Connie or Debbie. Connie will write up a liability release and have one of her attorneys look it over. There will not be a meeting prior to the Poker ride, so please let Debbie Ries know if you will be helping with the ride. Again, for food planning purposes. Membership applications: There were three applications to review. Karen Wheatly, Zane Drishinski and Steve Clark. Discussion followed on background checks for new members. We must be consistent on how we do checks. If someone applies that we have no knowledge of, we can send a request into the state for a $10 fee for a more thorough check. 3 Hutton moved to accept these membership applications, Connie Manning 2 nd the motion, motion carried. A question and answer program was held by our very own Dr. Dick Kinyon. Dick reviewed horse first aid and use of Banamine and Bute, how they work and time it takes to become effective. No further business, meeting adjourned at 8:35 PM. Next meeting will be August 8, 2013, Conrad Public Library, 7:00 PM. Swift Dam Work Project and Poker Ride. August 3 rd is the date set for the pre-poker ride work project. We will need people to ride around the lake and make sure the trail is ok for the poker ride on Sunday the 4 th. We will be going up to Swift Dam on Friday evening and working on Saturday. Here is a break down of some of the things that we need. If you can only make it one day we still welcome the help. We will need members to collect prizes for the poker ride; we can always use people for manning check stations. It is always nice to have somebody to police the campground or sweep the building, set up the canopy get food ready or whatever. This is our chapters main fund raiser for the year, so please help out if possible. If you plan on attending please let Connie Manning or Debbie Ries know. If you collect some prizes and are not going to attend please let them know what you have so they can arrange a pickup of your prizes. With everybody s help it makes it a lot easier, so please help out. PRETTY PRAIRIE WORK PROJECT July 12-14, 2013 is the dates for our next work project which will be held at the Pretty Prairie Administration site area. This project will include trail maintenance on the Prairie Creek trail number 262, Goat Creek trail number 249 and Windfall Creek trail number 265. This particular project is in the Bob Marshall Wilderness and is a major hub for people going to the visit the Chinese Wall. Pretty Prairie can be reached by driving to the Benchmark Trailhead this is the furthest north parking area in the Benchmark area, a.k.a known as the South Fork of the Sun Trailhead. Because this project is within the Wilderness boundary we can have no more than fifteen participants. So if you would like to attend it is imperative that you call Ron or Debbie Ries at or Fred Fitzpatrick at to sign-up. Some highlights that you will see on this project are the South Fork of the Sun River along with 2 major pack bridges of which are the South Fork of the Sun Pack Bridge and The West Fork Pack Bridge. You can also see Prairie Reef fire lookout. You can also catch a small portion of the Chinese Wall. Come and see why the Sun River country has been called Heaven for horses.
