MESA 4 WHEELERS HORN NEWSLETTER January 2017 Mesa 4 Wheelers, PO Box 107, Mesa AZ MESA 4 WHEELERS STAFF President Kurt Loga Vice President Dave Brown Secretary Pat Jenkins Treasurer Ray Jenkins Corres. Secretary Hazel Hart Membership Lori Moore Editor Mike Drawsky Remembrance Gert Leible Trophies Clete Hruska Safety Chairman John Hart Publicity OPEN Next Meeting January 19, 2018 Third Friday of every month, 7:00 PM. Bass Pro 1133 North Dobson, Mesa, AZ (602) PRESIDENT'S CORNER I hope everyone had a great Christmas and Happy New Year, I did. I can t believe how fast 2017 went by. Since I was unemployed looking for a job after being laid-off the year before I did not know what was going to happen. I planned to make a major career change and become a Truck Driver and ended up landing a job as a Project Manager doing what I use to do before. And with the new job I got a new used 4-wheeler and became a Jeep owner after driving a Ford Bronco for 26 years. My RV has the V-10 Ford so I still drive a Ford. Elections are coming up in March and we need to think about running for the various positions in the club. I do not plan to rerun for President and with many new members we have more candidates. I will not be at the February Club Meeting since that is Presidents Day Weekend and I will be camping and 4- wheeling that weekend. REMEMBER WHEN? 30 years ago? January 1988 Parking Extravaganza It s time to help earn money for your Club. We have the opportunity to park cars for the Classic Car Auction. Club participation was great last year. Where: On Washington by Chapparel Raceway When: January 21st - 24th Time: 8 A.M. until dark. Be there at 7 A.M. In January 1988 the Mesa 4 Wheelers volunteered to park visitor s cars for the Barrett Jackson Classic Car Auction. We had great enthusiastic Club member participation. For our efforts we got free admission to the Auction and a donation check to our Club from the Auction in appreciation of our volunteer help. At the next Mesa 4 Wheeler meeting our President, Bill Mihailov, said thanks to everyone for a job well done at the Parking Project. Edited by Ray Jenkins President, Kurt Loga

CLUB TRIP REPORTS Red Creek Trip Leader: Richard Friese Members in attendance: Mike Spale, Guests in attendance: Larry Met up with 4 other Jeepers from various clubs or non-affiliated at Oak s Diner and Flapjacks in Cave Creek. 3 of the attendees won the pleasure of riding along on this run by having the high bid on one of Richard's church raffle prizes. Pulled out promptly at 8:00 AM and began the long ride to Red Creek. Beautiful fall colors at the confluence of Red Creek and the Verde River. On the way into Red Creek; at the intersection of FR24 and FR269. Larry and Mike relaxing at the confluence after a long trip in. Came across this smoking campfire on the way down the Pottery shards found at the nearly totally destroyed (by nature creek. Dick looked on while Larry did some cleaning up. Mike and the public) ancient village just above the confluence. joined in and between them, got the entire area buried in dirt. Suspected culprits were observed further down the creek with their backpacks and rifles.

Red Creek (Continued) No other issues after this (ok, a couple of minor wrong turns!). Aired back up at the Cave Creek CCC trail head just before dark and was back at Oak s Diner by 6:30 PM. Challenging and exciting trip; not for stock jeeps or those concerned about Arizona pinstripes. (Trip report by Mike Spale) Bulldog Canyon Trip Leaders: Harold & Jeri Leberman Members in attendance: Ray & Pat Jenkins, Nate Van Kuren, Adelaide D Ippolito, Mike Drawsky, Bill Murray, Clete Hruska, Jim Kawa, WJ Kodatt, Amy Taylor, John & Hazel Hart, John & Jeanette Bryant, Keith Fliegel and Kurt Loga. Guests in attendance:.jim Hopper, Barb Sorenson, Bob Williams, Steve Slifer, Max McKee, Mike Painter, Dale Ehbright, Mercedes Johnson, Trish Masters, Andy Kellie, Kellie Willis, Chris & Mike Day and Bob Budd. Mike s jeep at the end of the dirt landing strip at the top of a mesa near the confluence. Bull Dog Canyon Run January 6, 2018 The landing strip. The run commenced from the trailhead off Usery Park Road. Staging area was from 9:30 AM, but many participants were there already when we arrived. We had a super turnout, 26 vehicles, with a large percentage of guests Before starting the run, some of us had the opportunity to see Kurt's one of a kind C.J. It's truly a show Jeep. Larry acts as chief spotter while Mike strapped a jeep off of one of the small waterfalls.

Bulldog Canyon (Continued) Hazel always starts and finishes the day with a smile! After dealing with two knee and three back surgeries in the past few years, every veteran member was delighted to see Nate back out on the trail! Jeri, with John & Jeanette From left to right: John, WJ, Jim and Mike First time guests enjoyed the day s perfect weather conditions for being outdoors. Pat and a guest are ready to start the run!

Bulldog Canyon (Continued) Also present were two rangers that insisted on checking all permits. Trip leader, Harold, gathered the group together to go over the day s route and rules of the road. The horseback riders were more than happy to share the trail with us. We were underway at 10:00 AM on FR Soon the group was well spread out. As we approached the high cliffs, two big horn sheep were spotted on top of the mountain and many in the group had a nice photo opportunity.

Bulldog Canyon (Continued) More happy horseback riders! These towering cliffs are at about the half way point and offer plenty of shade and room for large groups to stop and stretch their legs. Trip leader, Harold always keeps his TJ Rubicon in tip-topshape! Bulldog Canyon is part of the "Great Western Trail", traveling through the Tonto National Forest's Goldfield Mountains and Sonoran Desert. It offers incredible views of the nearby Superstition Mountains and is home to some of Arizona's most infamous legends, like the Lost Dutchmen Gold Mine. At one time the Bulldog Mine was one of the richest gold mines in the country but has now been reclaimed by the desert. Bulldog Canyon was pretty tame for Jim Hopper s CJ5 with 39 Swamper tires and a 350 V8. He had not driven this trail before and having longtime relationships with a number of M4W s members, decided to join us on the day s run.

Bulldog Canyon (Continued) Near the end of the run we found an area spacious enough to form a large vehicular horseshoe for a photo. In addition to the FR 3554 and FR 10 trails, we had planned to do FR1356, and then a short drive to Goldfield for lunch, but we were running close to two hours late and everyone was either too hungry or had other commitments. Just after making the right turn onto FR 10, one of the guest's vehicles lost its ignition and had to be towed the remaining distance. Jim Kawa was nice enough to do this, and he eventually towed the disabled Cherokee outside the trailhead area so it's owner could summon help and avoid a large extraction fee. Jim, thank you for helping our guests out!

Bulldog Canyon (Continued) Keith and his CJ7 have participated in quite a few M4W runs in the last 12 months. Goldfield Saloon Club President, Kurt and his recently purchased custom CJ. We elected to not do FR Several of us ended up at the Saloon Restaurant in Goldfield for nice camaraderie and lunch On our way to Goldfield for lunch after a fun day on the trail. Superstition Mountains is in the background. Mike s YJ with the Superstitions in the background Ray & Pat s TJ

76 Ranch to Young Trip Leaders: Gary & Brian Keller Members in attendance: Mike Drawsky Crossing Rye Creek, just ½ mile east of the Neal s home. Today s 76 Ranch to Young run, 5 Jeeps meet at Jake s Corner, for a 7:30AM start time. The Mazatzal Mountains in the background At the entrance to the 76 Ranch, Gary enters in the gate code that he obtained from ranch owner, Troy Neal. Ever since their ranch was vandalized a few years back, the Neal s have become more selective as to who they will allow access through their property. As a curtesy, Gary checks in with the Neal s. Mike & Gary Keller posing in front of this marker that memorialized two young sheep herders shot down in cold blood.

76 Ranch to Young (Continued) was found guilty and hanged behind the old courthouse in Globe and is buried in the Globe Cemetery. Next to marker was a PVC caped tube and inside was the story behind the death of these two young sheep herders. Two thirds of the way to Young we cross Spring Creek. This stone marker was placed here in memory of Wiley Berry and Juan Vigil, two young sheep herders that were shot to death by two cowboys, Zachary and John Booth, on December 22, A Bit Of History: Juan's father, Santiago Vigil, was the chief sheepherder for a Mormon by the name of William Berry. In December of 1903, Berry decided to move his herd of sheep from St. Johns, Arizona to Thatcher, Arizona. Santiago, his son Juan and Berry's son Wiley moved the 500 head of sheep while William Berry was still in Thatcher finalizing the details of the move. As the sheep moved through Brushy Basin, near Gisela, Arizona, they came upon some local cowboys, Zachary and John Booth, who were not at all pleased to find sheep in the area. Without warning, the cowboys shot 17 year old Juan Vigil and Wiley Berry. Santiago ran to the scene to find a bullet hole burning in his sons sweater where he had been shot. Santiago rode into Payson, Arizona to report the murders to the local sheriff. Shortly afterwards, Juan and Wiley were both buried in the cemetery at Gisela, although this was home to neither boy. Three days later, Christmas Day of 2003, there was a Christmas party held in the "16 to 1" Saloon in Payson. Among the attendees was Santiago Vigil and he spotted his son's murderers, Zachary and John Booth. He pointed the men out to the deputies who arrested the brothers and placed them on trial in Globe, Arizona. In the trial Zachary swore that John was not present at the murders, even though Santiago swore he was there. John was eventually released and continued to live and prosper in Gisela where he raised a family. Zachary The Flying W Ranch The Flying W Ranch was named after the Wilbanks family who owned the ranch in the early 1900 s. Before 1900 others were there, at the ranch along Spring Creek west to Gisela which defined the Flying W. A Bit Of History: The ranch s first stone cabin built by Louis O. Houdon in Louis was at their Ranch on Haigler Creek when attacked and killed along with Charles Wesley Sixby, July 12, Al Rose was at this cabin on November 1, 1887 gathering his cattle in that area in preparation for moving out of the valley. Louis Naegelin and John Watley were working with Al. That morning Al went out to gather up the horses and feed them before the work was to start and he was cut off by eight men who shot him to death. John V. Meadows held a coroner s inquest and both Watley and Naegelin testified that about eight men in long coats wearing masks shot Al Rose about 200 yards from the cabin.

Mr. Bill Amy@mihailov.com MINING CAMP RESTAURANT WILL NOT BE REBUILT Mining Camp Restaurant goes up in flames July 25, 2017 Over the past 56 years since Mining Camp was built, the zoning became restricted to residential. This historic gathering spot should be rebuilt not only because it's the right thing to do but because Mining Camp is a Monument in Superstition Mountain history and a true Arizona Landmark. Mining Camp was one of the few and only structures around when the area was nothing but open desert. People would drive from all over just to eat at this wonderful oasis in the desert and experience what it was like in a real mining camp. People fell in love, they moved here, and over the years Mining Camp became lost among the tile roofs of modern homes. Their success would help drive a nail in their coffin when tragedy struck summer of Did you know that Mining Camp Restaurant is the longest serving member on Apache Junction Chamber of Commerce since 1961?
