After several tries at going up this hill, some of the guests turned around and said they would see us another day. We traveled on to the Rose Quartz Mine and stopped to explore as Gert loaded up the Hummer with rocks. Traveling on towards the top of the mountain, we stopped for lunch where we could watch the people in the washes below. We had a beautiful view of Weavers Needle and all the mountains around us. After lunch we went on up the mountain and down several washes to Sycamore Creek. Several of us had fun climbing Widow Maker hill. After playing on the Widow Maker, we continued on and made our way back to the Beeline where we finished our run. THANKS FOR A GREAT RUN! From Darrel & Debra Wallace TRIP REPORTS Sugar Loaf Run 2/10/2007 Seven vehicles arrived with 4 members and 3 guests. They included Darrel and Debra Wallace, Rory and Lori Moore, Justin Wallace, Gert and Walt, David, Vivian Deal and Roy, Nikki Boom and Cody Wallace. The sun was out, the weather was great, what a good day to go 4 wheeling. After we aired down and made preparations, we pulled out at 9:30am from Sugar loaf and Highway 89. We traveled to Sycamore Creek and crossed with no problem. There was no water in the creek, but at the crossing the cement had washed out and you could see underneath it.

2 Page 2 Orville s Loop Trip Report It s around 9:30 am and Lee is giving a driver s meeting, reminding us once again to keep an eye on the vehicle behind us at all times and a brief description of today s run. Last time I ran Orville s Loop was in April of 03, and Lee again was trail leader. I knew this was going to be a fun run with a variety of challenging obstacles and a breath taking view at that end! Joining Lee on his run today are, Wayne Tall, Darrel & Debra Wallace, Justin Wallace, Ralph & Bruce Carnes with guest, Bob Biegel, Jim Kawa, a fellow co-worker of Lee s and Nate VanKeuren with guest at tail-end. Beginning from the intersection of Hwy 79 and Cottonwood Canyon Rd, our group travels east towards Box Canyon Rd. then south towards famous Amy s Campout. It s near Amy s Campout that Orville s Loop trail begins. Lee tells us that the name Orville s Loop was adopted from a miner by the name of Orville who lived in the area and would pay our club a visit during Amy s Campout. He passed away a number of years ago. Just east of Amy s Campout we meet our first challenge of the day, when Lee leads us off the main route and up a steep loop trail that at one time provided access to some vertical mine shafts. It s the beginning of a number of wheel spinning hill climbs that we will face throughout the day. At the top, Lee gets out to show us how deep these vertical shafts are by tossing a rock in while we listened to it descend for quite some time. A few minutes further down the trail we hear Nate on the radio asking whether he should turn right or left? I was the one who was supposed to keep an eye on him, oops! On our way back down to the main trail we hear Jim Kawa on the radio calling out for our location. Jim had started out the day wheeling with some other friends and now has decided to join up with us. His timing was just right for the next obstacle to come was the waterfall! Before we take on today s most challenging obstacle, Lee calls us together to show us the line over the falls and the bypass for those with more common sense! I, among the majority who posses little, decide to follow Lee over the falls! With luck and Lee s guidance those of us who have decided to follow Lee make it over without incident! Just beyond the falls we stop for lunch. Everyone is in a happy state of mind after having conquering such an obstacle! After a relaxing 45 minute break, we quickly pack up our stuff and with the confidence that we could take on anything that lie ahead, hop in our rigs and head for the rolls! Five minutes later I drive my rear leaf spring up onto a protruding rock that I could have easily driven around! Jim has to strap me off! Before we begin our final climb to the high point of our days run, Bob, Wayne & Jim have to call it a day and head for home where they have other commitments.

Page 3 Lee once again makes this steep climb look easy in his well equipped Jeep Rubicon! The one driver who has impressed me the most though is Bruce in his near stock TJ.

With clear skies it s easy to make out Mount Lemon to the south, Weavers Needle to the north and other points of interest.

Equipped with only a limited-slip in the rear, Bruce is able to make it all the way through without any assistance. Good driving Bruce! At the top we re rewarded with a 360 degree view! With clear skies it s easy to make out Mount Lemon to the south, Weavers Needle to the north and other points of interest. With such breath taking scenery no one is in any hurry to leave so we decide to spend some extra time soaking in the views before finally making our way back. For a $1 ticket last Fun Days, I won a $2,000 trip to the Bahamas Islands. Ginnie and I left January 29th on a flight from Phoenix to Fort Lauderdale Florida on Delta airlines. We boarded ship there and docked at Freeport Bahamas Island for an enjoyable 3 days and nights. We took a trip on a glass bottom boat and watched the fishes swim around. The next day we went deep sea fishing and I pulled in a 5 ft. 33 pound Wahoo fish. It was the biggest fish I ever caught!! We got 12 thick slices from the fish. After meeting a couple of the residents, they took us to their home in a stretch limousine which they owned to carry tourists in. We had a great fish dinner which the wife prepared for us. They plan to come here sometime this year and we are planning on going back there for a week. We got back on the ship to Fort Lauderdale, and from there took a rental car to Orlando Florida. We spent 5 nights there and then went to Daytona Beach for 2 nights. We then traveled back to Orlando and took a flight home on the 12th of February. It was a great trip and we really did enjoy it. 4 Page 4 need to pay is "attention", that is the difference. Trail rating is 2 on a five scale. Stock Broncos and Wranglers do fine. There is a ground clearance hump at the start and if you clear it - the rest is plain fun. Bring a jacket, camera and snacks. Our Meeting place is 75 miles north of Phoenix. The menu can be found at: asp Last time I was there the tribe had pretty good pricing for gasoline also. Expect to air down and start the trail at 10:30, finishing around noon-thirty. CB channel 14. Note: you do not need a "Red Rock" day pass. I spoke with the Coconino Rangers office and was told as long as we stay near the vehicles (in other words, do not park them and go on a long hike) no passes are required. We will take several stops, check out the submarine, explore the space ship, and definitely take a break at chicken point. (Photos borrowed from the internet) The afternoon is up to you, shopping, art galleries, searching for the harmonic convergence dome of Omni oneness, etc. FUN DAYS 2007 In the November newsletter and then again at the November club meeting I challenged everyone to re-energize their personal commitments to making M4W Fun-Days '07 a success: you all came through! There are few absolutes in life; however, each and every volunteer and the families and friends supporting those volunteers have set the momentum to making Fun-Days '07 another absolutely great and fun time. Let's review our updated plans for Fun-Days '07: Dates: No changes to our planned dates here, M4W Fun Days will span the days of April 12 th, 13 th, 14 th and 15 th. Make certain that you have marked the dates on your paper calendar, Outlook Calendar, Personal Data Assistants, and the like! Remember, your M4W Fun Days is your priority: no Grand Canyon trips; weddings; baby showers; belated spring clean-ups => only M4W Fun Days!

5 Page 5 Location: No changes to our plans here, we have reconfirmed our original plan to have Fun-Days '07 at the same location that we enjoyed with Fun-Days '06 which is near Superior. Thank you all so much, Paul Hutchinson Fun Days '07 chairman Miscellaneous Information ARIZONA STATE ASSOCIATION WINCH RAFFLE FOR 2007 RAFFLE FOR WINCH AND CASH The Arizona State Association of Four Wheel Drive Clubs is offering their second great winch raffle. Except this year we have added more prizes and more are coming. This years raffle will include a Warn Winch, donated by Four Wheeler Supply. Other cash prices include $250 second prize donated by Classic Broncos 4 Wheel Drive Club; $200 Paul Schuup (Precision Automotive Kingman); $100 Walapai Four Wheelers; $100 Bullhead Four Wheelers, other prizes will be added as they are donated. The raffle will help the ASA4WDC continue to fight to keep our roads and trails open for motorized recreation. We need to have those roads open so that you can use that new winch you just won! Tickets are $2 each and the raffle will be held at the ASA4WDC November Quarterly. You do not need to be a member of the ASA4WDC to purchase tickets. For more information contact your ASA4WDC State Delegates. Within the next week or so there will also be a location on the ASA4WDC website to buy tickets on line. Check out our website at ROUTE MAPPING INFO FROM MARTY We have heard that the US Forest Service will be mapping 4X4 trail routes that the users submit. It sounds like a trail will be closed if it is not included in the Route Designation process. I saw some good info in the March Off-Road Adventures magazine. It was as follows: This new DVD, which is available now through the National Off-Highway Vehicle

6 Page 6 Conservation Council (NOHVCC), provides OHV enthusiasts and professionals with detailed information on how to gather OHV route (trail) information using GPS technology, and how to provide that information to the USFS in a format that will be usable by the USFS for their upcoming Route Designation process. Emphasis is placed on GPS tools and technology that are available to OHV enthusiasts, and software that can be used to manage, catalog and format GPS data. One sample DVD is free for the asking, but shipping and handling will be charged for multiple orders. To order, call or trailhead@nohvcc.org. You can also visit their website at for more info on their other educational products and services. This gave me an idea on how we as a club can help with the Route Designation process on USFS land. I have created a plan which will get us, as a club, moving on the process. It is personally important to each one of us to keep our favorite 4X4 trails open and to be able to enjoy the 4X4 trails that we have not seen yet. I spoke with Bob Biegel (land use chairman) and he is in full support of this plan. It will be up to the club members and new officers to determine if we want to adopt this plan. I ll throw it out there and you guys tell me if I m crazy (now we re only talking about the plan here). Step 1: Everyone needs to get a copy of this DVD and to learn about the process. It s a free call and a free DVD. This DVD should play on your DVD player that s hooked up to your TV or on your computer if so equipped. We all need to learn about this process! Step 2: I have the basic Google Earth software on my computer. It is free and available for anyone to down load. It has satellite (sat.) photos of the entire earth and gives coordinates of where the pointer is located on the photo. Some of the sat. photos of Arizona are very clear and can be used to follow trails on the USFS land. It is like flying over a trail. These trails can be coordinate mapped right from the computer. Some of the sat. photos are not clear and the trails can not be seen or coordinate mapped. Get with me regarding the 4X4 trails that you know of on USFS land. Also look at you USFS maps to find 4X4 trails and primitive roads that we can look for with Google Earth. I or we will look on Google Earth to see if we can coordinate map it. If we can, you can send the coordinate data to the USFS as described on the free DVD. A couple examples: The 4X4 trail in Wood Canyon that we did at last years Fun Days is on USFS land and is on a clear sat. photo. Also, Log Coral trail and Flat Tire Canyon have good sat. photos. I will start by submitting these. Step 3: A lot of the USFS land does not have clear sat. photos and can not be coordinate mapped with the computer. We will have to go out on the trails & get GPS coordinates. Attention future President, Vice-President, and Land Use Chairman: It will be up to you guys or gals to make this happen, if you decide to do so. Here s the meat of the plan in step 3. We postpone the trips we have planned if they do not provide GPS mapping on USFS land. We plan trips to focus on GPS mapping. We divide up into groups of 3 or 4 vehicles and complete GPS mapping of multiple 4X4 trails in one day. Focus on just leading trips that are about GPS mapping for Route Designation. There are more trails than we could ever do. Try to have each team GPS map 2 trails in one day when possible. Plan the teams out ahead of the trips and have the routes planned. Different teams don t need to be in the same area. Do an area closer to your home. Have nice prizes like 4 Wheel Parts gift certificates for the persons that GPS map the most trails. First, second, and third kind of a thing. We are fortunate to have Sandee McCullen and Bob Biegel in our club. They are very involved and knowledgeable on land use issues. Their expertise and assistance will be

Page 7 extremely valuable to us if we decide to adopt this plan. Please stay in contact with your advice on this process. There is always room for improvement on this plan.

I think the Tonto Natl Forest is the first one that we should address. Mr. Biegel says we only have 6 to 12 months to complete. More info to follow. Very Important: Sandee, how do we know if a 4X4 trails data has already been submitted for the Route Designation. If one is already done, we should move on the next one. I can spearhead the computer coordinate mapping. That works for me since my vehicle is in a building mode and I can still contribute this way. We will need someone to spearhead the on trail GPS mapping. The next president, vp, or land use chairman might be best. We will need a person to keep track of all the trails that we submit and someone to coordinate the inputs from the club members on what trails to map next. This will be worth doing. It could be the most important thing we can do as a 4X4 club. Think it over a while. Should we commit to it? Requires some plan administration and a little extra effort by all. But really, what s it involve; planning 4X4 routes and going 4 wheeling.
