MESA 4 WHEELERS HORN NEWSLETTER NOVEMBER 2009 Mesa 4 Wheelers, PO Box 107, Mesa AZ MESA 4 WHEELERS STAFF President Darrel Wallace Vice President Clete Hruska Secretary Pat Jenkins Treasurer Ray Jenkins Corres.Secretary Debra Wallace Membership Lori Moore Editor Mike Drawsky Rememberance Jeri Liberman Trophies Haorld Liberman Next Meeting Nov. 20, 2009 Third Friday of every month, 7:30p.m. Location: Brown & Brown Chevrolet, Downstairs under sales room 145 East Main Street Mesa, AZ Run to The Rivers or FR-160, Rio Verde to Hwy.87 Trip Leader: Steve Fleming, Date: 10/17/09, Rating: 3 PRESIDENT S CORNER Well, here it is November and the Holidays are upon us. I would like to wish everyone a Happy Thanksgiving, Merry Christmas and a very Happy New Year. I look forward to new trips with good friends, fellow 4-Wheelers and more new members. Since there is no meeting in December, I would also like to take this time to remind all of you about Doc's snow run on December 19th. We will meet at the Strawberry Lodge, in Strawberry. We will meet at 8:00 for breakfast and pull out at 9:00. Any questions call Darrel See you on the trail Darrel... REMEMBER WHEN? 30 years ago The November '79 Horn reported on Editor Amy's questionnaire. Two trips were scheduled: A November 11th Steak Fry and the Thanksgiving Mexico Trip. Hec and Donna Ramsey wrote the trip report on Dick Williamsons Wickenburg Run, where Doc Staff was not only late, but broke an upper radiator hose and later "scored" his radiator with the fan blade! Our day begins with breakfast at Denny's in Fountain Hills. Club members who attended the "Run to The Rivers" included: Steve Fleming (Trip Leader), Jim Kawa, Mike Drawsky, Nate Van Keuren, Joyce & Ernie Boyco, Ray & Pat Jenkins, Bob & Ann Nyberg, Dave Brown, Wayne & Tanya Mihilov & Darrel & Deb Wallace (Tail-End). Guests included: past member, Steve Slifer, soon to be members John Guthrie & daughters Candy & Colette, Mike Columbo and Nate's copilot, Dick. The Jenkins brothers removed the radiator, took it into town for repairs and later returned to reinstall it so he could drive home. AZ LONGSHOREMAN Minutes after airing down we lined up to take turns crossing the Verde River.

Compared to three weeks ago when we crossed at this same spot, the depth and flow had more than doubled. Our state utilities provider, SRP (Salt River Project) just recently decided it was time to open up the gates at Bartlett Dam, a few miles up river. Dave & Paula Brown have rejoined the club and we are happy to have them back! During our first scheduled stop, I had Dave pose beside his new JK Rubicon. Along with the JK, he still has his highly modified TJ for those hardcore trails! Our twelve-vehicle caravan lined up along the top of the earthen dam at Ryan Tank for a group photo. Darrel & Deb Wallace making their way across the Verde. This run gave Ernie & Joyce the opportunity to test out their new lift & larger and more aggressive Super Swampers tires. To go from 33" to 36" requires a major lift and regearing! During yesterday's monthly club meeting, Mike Columbo had just introduced himself and today was joining us on the trail for the first time. Less than an hour into the run he found out that not all clubs rate trails the same! Driving a nearly stock, Toyota pickup, with open differentials, Mike had to use a little more pedal to maintain forward progress. He kept a positive attitude throughout the entire run, only having to surrender to the tow strap twice. With Wayne & Tanya's busy work schedule it's not often we get the pleasure of their company. We hope to see more of them on future runs.

Spook Rally Trip Leader: Bill & Amy, Dates: 10-30, 31 & Descending the east side of Herder Mountain road conditions got a bit more challenging. Ann Nyberg radioed to Pat & Ray to let them know that she nearly wet her pants while watching them maneuver down and around a washed out section of road that left little room for error! Mark Pinson & Bill Mihailov's PT boat wins fisrt place for "Best Decorated Vehicle". This summer's lack of rain left most of Sycamore Creek dry. First time "Trip leader" Steve Fleming was pleased with the trip's outcome. Great weather, good turnout, lots of exiting moments and just one flat tire! Thank you Steve for leading us on a new trail that was full of great scenery, history and plenty of challenge! Mike Drawsky Bill and Jim Kawa dressed in drag...

Wayne & Tonya Mihailov driving the Spook Rally Mark Pinson dressed as? Jim Kawa in drag, driving the Spook Rally Box Canyon to Martinez Canyon Lisa Pinson with the boys. Trip Leader: Clete & Randi Hruska, Date: 10/31/09, Rating: 2.5 MARTINEZ CABIN - HALLOWEEN DAY - SATURDAY, 31 OCTOBER '09 (Trip Leader: Clete Hruska) We started out on a perfect Halloween day with 5 vehicles. Participating members and guests included: Clete & Randi, Mike, Larry & Melissa, John & Hazel, and Greg & Lynn. Mark& Lisa and Bill & Amy driving the Spook Rally. Departing at 9:00 from a campsite 12 miles from Highway 79 near Florence, we followed the trail through Box Canyon and then onward to Martinez Canyon and Martinez Cabin.

We encountered some narrow, rocky passages, but we all made it through the challenging rough spots. As the road widened, we saw 3 cabins. Deciding this was the best spot for lunch, we ate and explored the cabins. The area was surrounded by big beautiful shade trees and logs for chairs. When we hiked back down the hill, we discovered that Clete had broken a high pressure power steering hose on his Bronco. The guys put their heads together for 2 hours and came up with a workable solution. The women sat and chatted on the logs under the shade trees. If anything had to happen, this was the best place. Clete made it out with no further problem. All in all, the day was pleasant, and everyone enjoyed the ride. FUTURE TRIPS & EVENTS While we were there, 4 or 5 super rock crawlers went up the hill to finish the run, which was supposed to be difficult. Imperial Sand Dunes Thanksgiving Run (Glamis Dunes) Trip Leader: Darrel & Debra Wallace Contact # (480) When: Nov. 24th-29th I would like to invite you all to our annual trip to the Glamis Sand Dunes over Thanksgiving weekend. For those of you who are planning to go, there will be plenty of action, food, vendors, and good times. Maps will be available at the Oct. and Nov. meeting. The sand dunes are a pay area: a weekend to park. You can buy a permit online as it is cheaper or before entering the camp area. You will get a paper plaque for your vehicle. There will be two runs a day and one at night. We will be exploring the China Wall, the Devils Bowl, the Oldsmobile Hill and Competition Valley plus many more exciting areas. After lunch, we hiked the rocky, uphill 1/2 mile climb to the mine and the mill. We couldn't get to the mine because it was blocked off and across a ravine, but the mill was fascinating with its old equipment from New York. The sand dunes are cold at night so bring warm clothes. There are vendors, a store, and a few places to buy parts if needed along with a welder on hand. We will have a potluck on Saturday afternoon, please bring a dish of choice. You are required to have a dune flag on your vehicle, lighted would be nice for night if possible also taillights and K.C. LITES if you have them for running at night. There is a restaurant above the store that has great food for breakfast, lunch and dinner. They have fantastic everything pizza.

FUTURE TRIPS & EVENTS The dunes are like the cinders, but sand no rocks. There are no sleeping quarters except for your own tent or campers etc. There are port-a-potties available. There are showers at the store. Bring firewood and any other necessary things you might need. Hope to see you there. For any questions or a map, feel free to call Darrel Wallace at or after 2:00 pm. Please RSVP. Thanks COME -ONE- COME- ALL To Mesa 4 Wheelers Christmas Party!! Place: Usery Park Date: Dec 12, 2009 (For more details see attached registration form & map) Sheep's Crossing (Verde River) Trip Leader: Mike Drawsky Contact # When: January 30 Meet: Harold's Resturant, Cave Creek Start Time: 8:00, pull out 9:00 Finish Time: 4:30 Rating: 2.5 Trip Details: Cross the Verde River near Horseshoe Dam and follow FR479 to Sheeps Crossing. (If water levels at the dam are to high for a safe crossing we will go by way of Sevens Springs Road & Bloody Basin).
