MESA 4 WHEELERS HORN NEWSLETTER DECEMBER 2015 Mesa 4 Wheelers, PO Box 107, Mesa AZ MESA 4 WHEELERS STAFF President Bill Mihailov Vice President Bob Nyberg Secretary Pat Jenkins Treasurer Ray Jenkins Corres. Secretary Hazel Hart Membership Lori Moore Editor Mike Drawsky Remembrance Gert Leible Trophies Clete Hruska Safety Chairman John Hart Publicity OPEN Next Meeting January 15, 2015 Third Friday of every month, 7:00 PM. Bass Pro 1133 North Dobson, Mesa, AZ (602) PRESIDENT'S CORNER Words from the Prez Amy & I want to wish you all a very Merry Christmas & a Happy and Prosperous New Year! See you in January! The Prez.Mr. Bill President REMEMBER WHEN? 30 years ago December 1985 Christmas Tree Trip Sunday morning started early for most of the tree cutting members and most of us made a stop at McDonalds in Payson. Mike Dreckman had to get a new battery before leaving Payson, but the rest of us journeyed up to mile marker 311 on Forest Highway 3 towards Flagstaff from Clints Well area. Upon the leader s arrival, he found Ray and the Clarkins already there with the kids having fun in the snow - much less than two years ago. Bob Noffz joined us about pullout time, coming down from Flagstaff with his guest. Mike caught up with us as we started up Hutch Mountain to the lookout. This year we had no trouble getting all the way up and past the camp spot of two years ago. However, the Arizona Longshoreman got stuck three times just parking. Everyone took off hunting their trees and one was cut for our Christmas Family that the Club is sponsoring from the needy group. Since the Ramseys could not make the trip, they donated their permit for the tree. After lunch around a fire and helping the kids ride toboggans down a slope, we all loaded up after getting the leader unstuck and the group headed on down the mountain about 2:00 PM. An attempt for an extended trip out by another route ended up on a recent bulldozed road which caused us to abort the try. We retraced our tracks to the main forest road and turned out our hubs at the meeting place, saying our good byes ; and taking off for home. The Arizona Longshoreman s deckhand! Ray Jenkins

CLUB TRIP REPORTS Christmas & 50 Year Anniversary Party Event Orginizers: Jeri & Harold Liberman, Randi & Clete Hruska, Pat & Ray Jenkins and Paula Brown. Date: October 24, 2015 M4W Members in attendance: Nate & Judi VanKeuren, Jeri & Harold Liberman, Randi & Clete Hruska, Pat & Ray Jenkins, Paula & Dave Brown, Walter & Gert Leible, Mike & Linda Drawsky, Bill & Amy Mihailov, Bill & Charlotte Murray, Bob & Ann Nyberg, Rory & Lori Moore, John & Hazel Hart, Paul & Joanna Hutchinson, Martin Bode, Rob Avis, Wayne & Stefan Mihailov and Kurt Loga. Guests in attendance: Fred Alexander & Dorothy, Gary & Jean Keller, Glenn, Tonia & Laurel McConnell, Mike Bikoe, Del & Patty and Tom Fink. 50 Year Reunion & Christmas Party group photo. Mike brought a digital projector and hours of club photos that were changing every few seconds. Just as Mike took this shot, the 2013 Christmas group photo comes up on the screen., the last that Doc Staff attended. Nate & Mike missed out on the group photo, so as not to forget they were there, Mike had this photo of them taken. 50 Year Anniversary cake.

Christmas & 50 Year Anniversary Party Since there were past members that we had not met before, we went around to each table and had every one introduce themselves. After Fred Alexander introduced himself and Dorothy, Mike told the story of Fred, who at the young age of 80, purchased two wrecked TJ Jeeps from the wrecking yard and built one good one! At 94 Fred is still driving that TJ! Bill enjoyed a piece of the club s anniversary cake. Paul looked over the club s archive photos. Walter was the winner of this large jar of candy after guessing the closest to how many candies were in the jar. Wayne playing with his son, Stefan Laurel, Amy, Stefan, Bill, Pat and Lori participated in this year s Christmas costume contest. Amy got the vote!

Christmas & 50 Year Anniversary Party Dave snatched up the Tequila Rose from Clete! Minutes after Mike unwrapped the Kahlua, during the gift exchange, it was quickly snatched from his hands! Alcohol again this year was the popular exchange gift. Randi unwrapped this beautiful quail carved from ironwood. Unfortunately, others were also interested in having it! Kurt Loga, a veteran 4-wheeler and longtime friend of Bill & Amy, was just recently voted in as a member of M4W. His gift was a hand held CB radio. Always good to have an extra to pass out to those guests who show up without one or if your main one goes on the blink! This was as close as Clete was going to come to tasting the Tequila Rose. Glenn picked up a set of nighttime driving lights, but later lost it to Ann!

Christmas & 50 Year Anniversary Party Ann was now the proud owner of these nighttime driving lights! Gary unwrapped a second bottle of Tequila Rose, but like Clete was unable to hold on to it for very long! Nate, hoped by not fully unwrapping the liquor bottle, people might not notice the fine bottle of spirits and snatch it from him! The Bailey s Irish Cream was snatched up with in minutes! Past member, Mike snatched this First-Aid-Kit from Glenn. Tonia and Laurel walked away with a beautiful purse. Lin won a gum ball machine and passed it on to Stefan to share at his school.

Christmas & 50 Year Anniversary Party Fred snatched up the quail from Randi, but soon lost it to Rory. Judi s second time at the gift table, she unwrapped this book on Younger Next Year. At last a gift she will not be giving up! Rory made the third steal, assuring he and Lori, final ownership of the quail. Harold walked away with these roll gage handle grips! Hazel snatched this fine cut glass bowl loaded with chocolate goodies from Judi! What better gift to go along with Amy s Christmas spirit than this decorative snowman?

Christmas & 50 Year Anniversary Party Annual Snow Run Trip Leaders: Mike Drawsky Date: Saturday, Dec. 12, 2015 M4W Members in attendance: Pat & Ray Jenkins, Bill & Amy Mihialov, John & Hazel Hart, Rob & Suzy Hayton, Rob Avis, Kevin & Diana Losey, and Don Dotty. Guests in attendance: Mike & Linda Pidanick, Dean Eddlemon, Bill, Tom Ruane, Laura Silvester, Mike Painter, Charlotte unwrapped a basket full of bath & skin care products. Snow was falling and the snow plow was out in Pine! Standing behind the tables of M4W photos taken in the 60 s through the 80 s are past & present members who were around during this period. From right to left: Mike Bikoe, Ray & Pat, Del & Patty, Tom Fink, Gary & Jean Keller and Bill & Amy. Shot from downtown Pine looking north along Highway 87. Praise goes out to our party committee, Jeri & Harold, Pat & Ray, Randi & Clete and Paula! Shot from downtown Pine looking south along Highway 87. In all the 17 years attending M4W Snow Runs, this was the first time seeing this much snow at this elevation!

Annual Snow Run (Continued) Shot of the Randall House from across the road. Bill arrived dressed for the holiday season! When I arrived Saturday morning at the Randall House, no one else had yet arrived. The only ones who had notified me that they were coming were Rob & Suzy, Bill & Amy and Rob Avis. so I was not expecting much of a turnout. By a little after 8 AM, we had 20 in attendance! Starting out the morning with great food, nice atmosphere, warm conditions and great company, this was enough to make the 2-hour drive worth it! I had told Barbara, the owner of the Randall house, that we might have as many as a dozen, so she set up this private room for twelve. During the hour and half we were there we had most of the place to ourselves. The snow had deterred most visitors from coming out.

Annual Snow Run (Continued) After breakfast we were escorted north along Highway 87 to the top of the Mogollon Rim behind this snow plow, making for much safer road conditions. With these winter conditions, every photo became an award winner! Don & Bill in the white TJ both have cabins in the area, like to deer and elk hunt, and know these forest roads well. Since this was deer hunting season, Rim Road 300 was open. Rob & Suzy in their TJ Sport. Rob jumped right in and assisted in all 3 recovery operations, including mine! Guests, Mike & Laura followed behind trip leader Mike in their Toyota Tacoma.

Annual Snow Run (Continued) Guest s Mike & Laura enjoyed every snow drop! As we drove further east along the rim the snow became a bit deeper. Mike decided it was best to let Mike & Laura and Rob & Suzy, whose rigs had more ground clearance, to take the lead. We drove 6 miles east along the 300 Road to where it met up with Forest Road 308. We were in short walking distance to the edge of the rim and were hoping for a break in the cloud cover, so we could take advantage of the view, but no luck. Bill & Amy were thinking of driving the full length of the Rim Road, but the majority decided they wanted to head back, allowing plenty of daylight for the drive home. Don came prepared for the snowy weather! Just after lining up our rigs for the group shot, the snow once again began to fall! On our return, we came across a Toyota 4 Runner stuck in the ditch and unable to get out. Mike & Linda Pidanick, volunteered to pull them out with their vintage Willy s. While attempting to pull the Toyota out they themselves slid off the road. They might have turned over, if not for the large tree that stopped their progress.

Annual Snow Run (Continued) With the use of 2 winches and a snatch block, we were able to pull the Green Willys back onto the road. Back in the lead and just a mile from the end of our run, Mike slid off the road. Once again it took a winch with a snatch block attached to a tree from across the road, and Ray s Cherokee pulling from the front to get Mike s Toyota back on the road. Back in Pine some of us stopped for a beer and hamburger. Mike and Linda were part of that group. Don & Bill were a great help in both sharing their knowledge of Mogollon Rim roads and providing tow straps and shackles for those of us in need!
