1 Pop Valve No. 415 Spring Open House Edition June 2018 Editor: Roger Caiazza Photographs: Robert Fruitt & Ric Golding Publishers: Ted Taylor & Tom Pierson Board of Director s Notes This edition of the Pop Valve is the general version announcement of our Open House on June 22 to the 24. We want to remind all members including our social members that you are welcome to come out to the open house and would really appreciate it if you have some time to help out. For our visitors who are bringing trains, we love to have you come but ask that you try to keep out of the way of the public passenger trains. We have plans for eventual more peaceful coexistence but ask your patience in the meantime. Also note that we will celebrate the Fourth of July on June 30 with a picnic if someone volunteers to host it. If no one steps up then everyone will be on their own if they want to picnic and run trains that day. Note that this is two days after a full moon and we should have our own fireworks show courtesy of the local fire fly population. If you have never taken a ride on the trains at night it is well worth staying up to see. Just remember to keep your mouth shut when riding. One of the big projects for the club this year has been to revise our Bylaws and policies to be consistent with revised New York State rules for non-profits. As part of that process we are now registered with the NY Charities Bureau. Stay tuned because we are going to set up a way to donate through the Amazon Smile program. Save the Date! Next year on August 1-4 the Finger Lakes Live Steamers will celebrate its 50 th Anniversary. Set aside the date now for a four day celebration of our hobby and this club. Later this summer we will have details and open early registration. If you have not been here for a long time then come out and see all the changes and if you have never been here come and see what we have to offer. There have been additions and modifications on our 7 ¼ gauge, 4 ¾ gauge and Gauge One layouts. Wanted Tim Guenther and Al Francis are cleaning up and re-organizing the shop. They are looking for donations of a roll around tool cabinet and heavy duty casters. Please contact Tim ( timbg500@rochester.rr.com ) if you have something they can use. Harold Crouch Locomotive The Pontarelli s heard from Jim Abrams that Harold s locomotive is for sale and someone from Australia is making offers. If you want to save a bit of history from our club let Steve know. By the way it supposedly has a new boiler and the negotiable price is $15,000.

3 The FLLS Deluge of 2018 On June 1, 2018 the club was inundated with a flash flood. According to the NWS radar report between 1.5 and 2 inches of rain fell in a short time. The result was excitement for the campers and the guys working on the foam abutments for the Hank Mastalski s south loop expansion project. Thanks to Bob Fruitt and Ric Golding for these pictures. At 2:16 PM the water is noticeably higher. Art 2:11 PM Bob takes the first picture from his trailer. Another 2:11 PM shot shows that the ditch is full. By 2:18 PM the bridge is afloat held only by electrical conduit
4 At 2:24 PM the sun is coming out and the bridge is holding on 2:35 PM looking north from the mainline. At 2:26 PM it looks like we are connected to the barge canal 2:26 PM looking south from the mainline bridge At 2:57 PM from the new track on Rabbit s Run looking to the NE towards the water tower. Your editor cannot help but think what would happen if this kind of storm occurred on an open house day.
5 FLLS Visitors and Club Members Operating Equipment Safety Rules At 3:16 PM the local frog population was in heaven Sadly for the frogs by 5:00 PM the water was gone Operating Trains Between 10:00 AM and 4:00 PM on Public open house days, all passenger trains must have a flagman with a flag and air horn in addition to the engineer. If there is a derailment or some other mishap, the flagman must go back far enough behind the train to flag any following train to avoid a derailment. Once the following train has stopped, the flagman can return to the train to help the engineer resolve the problem. If operating a train without passengers or a conductor the engineer must carry a horn and flag. If there is a derailment or some other mishap, the engineer must go back far enough behind the train to flag any following train to avoid a derailment. Once the following train has stopped, the engineer can return to the train to resolve the problem. Trains must be separated by a safe distance twice the stopping distance Steam engines Please get water on the storage yard siding and not the main line There is emergency water available at the woods siding Do not operate through the passenger station Passenger station bypass stop sign o All trains must stop o Establish contact with engineers on trains in station or station master for clearance to continue o Passenger trains out of the station have the right of way o Blow your whistle to make sure the crossing guards have blocked pedestrian traffic
