Gone Fishin! Your President, Lee Coppage ( Lonewolf ) REMEMBER WHEN? 30 years ago The August 1981 meeting was scheduled to be held at the Bumpes home. A member suggested that we meet at 7:30 instead of 8pm. Tom and Kathy Fink wrote the report on the June Steak Fry trip. Bob Goble wrote the trip report for the Cinder Hills run. "Jack" (somebody's dog) wrote another report on the same Cinder Hills trip. 2 TRIP REPORTS (Continued) Half way to the top we stop to take in the view, stretch our legs and pose for pictures with close friends! Nearing the top of Pinal Peak we stopped to take in this endless view looking south towards Mt. Lemmon. The temperature throughout the evening and nighttime were very comfortable. It never dipped below 60 degrees. A perfect night for star gazing! Bears are common in the Eldorado National Forest where the Rubicon trail winds its way across, so Dave picked up this bear proof ice chest to bring along. Pinal Mountain is also prime bear habitat, so Dave decided to play it safe and winch his ice chest up a nearby tree. Dave Brown thought up this overnight run in preparation for our On the return trip, Clete chose another way down the upcoming Rubicon adventure. We aired down and pulled out with seven rigs at 9:30. Our destination was Cove 3 where we were looking forward to the shade and refreshing lake to cool off.

3 TRIP REPORTS (Continued) Three quarters of the way down we catch sight of the copper pits in Miami and Globe. After a three thousand foot descent, the temperature had risen by nearly twenty degrees! Nearing the end of Pioneer Road, I got everyone to line up for our traditional group photo. We were happy to see Mike & Steve waiting for us. Dave & Paula surprised us on the CB that they were only a minute away after having a small battery issue. We aired down and pulled out with seven rigs at 9:30. Our destination was Cove 3 where we were looking forward to the shade and refreshing lake to cool off. Luckily, the weather was overcast and the temperature not so bad. Thank you Dave for coming up with the idea and thank you Clete and Randi for doing a fine job leading us! Attending guest was Martin Bode. st We pulled out of the QT Station which was the 1 meeting point at 8:30 with four rigs and knew when we got to the trailhead we could expect more members. The route was full of zig zags and climbing up and down many of the washes to provide some steep climbs and descents. Trailing into the lake took about two hours with a couple of stops to look at some hills. Some of the climbs would bring your rig to the top without being able to see the immediate descent.

After a couple of attempts, it was safer to hook the winch for the extra help up. From there it was easy drive back to the beginning of the wash where we all aired up and hit the road home. Some hiking involved August 19-28, Ironton Park, Colorado: Four-wheeling, exploring, enjoying the area close to Ouray Colorado at Ironton Park. Wednesday 9/14 - Complete the trail, and stay at a motel on the West or South shore of Lake Tahoe. Thursday 9/15 - Run the Barrett Lake Trail and camp overnight at Barrett Lake. Friday 9/16 - Return from Barrett Lake and head back to Minden, NV to load up. Saturday & Sunday 9/17 & 9/18 - Drive home. 6 FUTURE TRIPS & EVENTS (Continued) CROWN KING FIRE DISTRICT P.O. Box 397 Crown King, AZ Phone Fax Friends of Crown King, The Crown King Volunteer Fire Department will be hosting their Annual Benefit Barbecue, Auction, and Dance on September 17, This is our major fundraising event of the year. The proceeds from this event supplement our annual budget, help maintain apparatus, and provide matching funds for grants. Residents of the community, as well as fire department volunteers, help with their time and donations to make this barbecue, auction, and raffle a success. The Crown King Fire Department responds to both medical and fire calls within our District and throughout the surrounding Prescott National Forest lands. The town was threatened in 2008 by the Lane 2 Fire and, with the long drought and bark beetle infestation, the wildfire threat remains extreme. We will be focusing on raising funds for improving apparatus and to help fund our continued efforts to create defensible space around homes in our community. We would like to ask your help in publicizing this occasion. Please see the enclosed flyer for details. Crown King is a small mountain community located in the southern Bradshaw Mountains. Historically, Crown King was a mining town; now the economy centers on tourism. Upon arriving in Crown King, you will find a general store, prospector mall, two taverns and restaurants, rental cabins, and the fire station. There are 300 summer homes found in the surrounding area whose owners enjoy the cool pines and friendly atmosphere of our small town. To get to Crown King, take 1-17 (from Phoenix about 68 miles) to the Bumble Bee or Bloody Basin exit. From there you travel a 28-mile dirt road, which is narrow with turnouts and is passable for all passenger cars. This is the main road and is built on the old train bed from the mining days. Other access to Crown King includes the Senator Highway from Prescott, which is an approximate 3 hour drive and passable for 4-wheel drive and high clearance vehicles at this time of year. There is also a 4- wheel drive road coming up from Lake Pleasant - an extreme challenge for off road enthusiasts. This road has some very rough sections and should only be tackled by experienced riders. We would like to suggest you use the buddy system and travel with another 4-wheel drive vehicle if you are not familiar with the route or terrain. Any of these routes will take the visitor past historic mining sites and offer some beautiful vistas of the southern Bradshaws. Please remember, here as in other areas, vehicles do need to be registered. The Prescott National Forest has two improved campgrounds and a small lake located 7 miles from Crown King in the Horsethief Recreational Area, as well as several unimproved camping areas located close to Crown King. Campers should call ahead of time to be aware of fire restrictions. Crown King offers a true recreational alternative for those wanting to escape the heat and bustle of Phoenix. We would like to encourage both our old and new friends to visit, not just for our barbecue, but throughout the year. Thank you for your time. This year, Copperstate 4 wheelers will be planning the cleanup for both Sugarloaf and Four peaks. We will be working closely with the Tonto National Forest for both locations.

Last year's cleanup turnout was good but we are hoping for a bigger turn out this year. We are also going to be a bit ambitious as well. This year, Copperstate 4 wheelers will be planning the cleanup for both Sugarloaf and Four peaks. We will be working closely with the Tonto National Forest for both locations. This year's combined cleanup will be on Saturday November 5th. The meeting time is 8 am and we will likely be out there until 3 pm or so. The meeting location will be the Four Peaks staging area approximately 1/2 mile after turning off highway 87 on the Four Peaks road. As with last year's clean up there will be a raffle and I am hoping to have lunch out there as well. Over the next several months, Copperstate will be looking for donations for the raffle, lunch, water, trash bags, and other materials to make this cleanup a success. Anyone who is able to help with this process and donate to this cause, will be greatly appreciated. More than that however, is the donation of your time, which is most important.
