1 SOLANO YACHT CLUB OLD SALT Rich Campson, Commodore July 2014 Volume 31, Issue 7 FROM THE WHEEL Rich Campson, Commodore Inside this issue: Bridge 1 Birthdays 4 Cruise Schedule 6 Calendar of Events 8 Tide Chart 9 It is time for the new board to get started. We have learned a great deal in the past year and looking to make big improvements and we have just the board to do it! The Solano Yacht Club has been very fortunate to have strong board members dedicated to helping keep the organization strong and enjoyable. By continually bringing in new representatives to the board, we are able to draw on their energy, ideas and skills. The combination of Board Members, an energetic Betterment of the Club Committee, and member volunteers, we have been able to further propel SYC to a level that draws members to functions and is the talk of all clubs that visit. big hit. Through the year, I have had numerous conversations with boat owners and the harbormaster. Overall the conversations have led to access and safety around the docks on the 4th. This event has continued to grow over the years and we need to keep it safe and enjoyable. Everyone needs to take note of others that are on the docks and we must always keep open paths for them to safely get to and from their boats. This year we should try to keep tables and chairs to one side and be aware that if you are standing in groups, others cannot get by. We all need to help by nicely reminding everyone on the docks. By this reading we should already have the Battle of the Straights trophy in our display case. Benicia it was fun!! Upcoming this next week we have 4th of July on the dock, which is always a Solano Yacht Club Bridge 4TH OF JULY Commodore: Rich Campson Vice Commodore: Rear Commodore: Fleet Secretary: Deb Campson Vacant Nona Strahan Fleet Treasurer: Membership Captain: Liaison Officer: Bob Charboneau Shirley Davis Nancy Forrest Fleet Captain: Port Captain: Becky Carroll Dave Pastore Social Director: Past Commodore: Mary Hatzenbiler Michael Johnson

3 P a g e 3 Membership Updates Mary Hill, Membership Captain It has really been a fun year getting to know all the members and new members. I'm not going away, because you now have a great new membership captain, Shirley Davis who is the best of the best to take over for you. She is a wonderful person and I know she will bring some fun to the position. I wish Shirley only the best in her new endeavors. And now I wish to thank the membership for allowing me to have the position. those that help me orientate new members and just helped me when I needed it! So thanks to all of you! Be sure to tell your friends what a great place this is! and I will see you around the bar! I just wanted to let you know our member of the month for June was Becky Carroll for all the efforts she made towards the fashion show. and then there was the member of the year, John Lyons for all the help he gave Judy behind the bar Board of Directors June s Chefs The Eberts Member of the Month Becky Carroll Member of the Year John Lyons July Birthdays 2 Bill Poyser 4 Jason Hamilton 6 Sharon Dominik 7 Jeffrey Cooper 10 Al Van Nieuwburg & Dave Pastore 11 Yoko Williams 12 Shirley Davis 14 Don Sefcik 15 Terry Wallar 18 Rusty Graska 19 Chewy Garcia 22 Peter Beadle 26 Mary Wright 27 Liz Moore & Ros Weber 28 Rhoda Jones

4 Port Report P a g e 4 Dave Pastore, Port Captain As I reflect on my first year as Port Captain for the Solano Yacht Club I am thankful to so many people. There are too many to mention and I hope you all know who you are. A special thanks to Judy and John Lyons. They have always helped me whenever John thought I needed help. I feel very lucky to have the opportunity to serve the club in a way that hopefully is reflected in my dedication to the club. We are all custodians of our positions in the club and will be followed by others that will carry on the traditions that have been instilled in each of us. I hope to see all of you at the club and on the water. Safe sailing. Happy Cruising! A Reel Review Editorial by Deb Campson Blended Really, an African Safari with 5 kids, and it was downhill from there. Poor acting by adults and kids. A Million Ways to Die in the West Some funny parts, some just too Gross. It was compared to a Blazing Saddles. Chef Funny, great story, very Entertaining and loved the musical score. Edge of Tomorrow I did not see this one, but got this from a very reliable source. Very entertaining 22 Jump Street Funny, funny, funny!!! Malificent Great twist on a classic story. Worth seeing.

5 From the Fleet.... P a g e 5 Paul Carroll, Fleet Captain Well, the Benicia cruise out is history. Once again, we have increased our participation. We had fourteen boats, 1 land cruiser and several members come over to play games and then stay for dinner. We have some more first time cruisers with us again. Once again, Dave & Tina Pastore (Trips r Us), Norma Jaime (Happy Feet) & Greg & Shelly Spencer (The Dude) joined us for their second cruise out. Then Rusty & Kathy Mayes (Carpe Dieme) & Ron Walker (Miss Liz) joined us for the first time. The games went well, we are ahead in score and hope to finish it off this weekend. July will be our Delta Cruise. This will also be a great cruise for those who can make it. And for those who cannot make the entire week, join us either at the beginning weekend, or the last weekend. There is a change in the Delta Cruise, we will not be going to Rio Vista for the last two days. We will probably be going back to Pittsburg, but it has not been decided yet. An will be sent out when the final decision is made. Then in August, make plans to go to Aeolian YC, in Alameda. We are going there for their Tropical Party. This should be a lot of fun also. So be sure to put it on your calendar. Don t forget the 4 th of July dock party at SYC. This is also a great time. Hope to see you there. There are several great events happening this month, so visit our Social Director s corner to see what you might miss if you fail to come to the club. Well, this is my usual short report, it is also my last report. Keep your eyes open here for more great reports from Becky, as she is going to take over as Fleet Captain.. I hope to see everyone at the club for some good times and great friendship. See you soon.
