MESA 4 WHEELERS HORN NEWSLETTER APRIL 2011 Mesa 4 Wheelers, PO Box 107, Mesa AZ MESA 4 WHEELERS STAFF President Lee Coppage Vice President Bill Mihailov Secretary Pat Jenkins Treasurer Ray Jenkins Corres.Secretary Debra Wallace Membership Lori Moore Editor Mike Drawsky Rememberance (To be announced) Trophies (To be announced) Safety Chairman (To be announced) Next Meeting April 15, 2011 Third Friday of every month, 7:30p.m. Location: Brown & Brown Chevrolet, Downstairs under sales room 145 East Main Street Mesa, AZ PRESIDENT S CORNER REMEMBER WHEN? The April 1981 issue of the Horn listedl Hec Ramsey as the new club President. Willard and Linda Kodatt were listed as the "Most Active Members" for The editor wrote in her Editors Corner that it was her last month before moving. An article was written as how to prepare "Smoked Rattlesnake" for eating. A poem like report was written by their Tierra Del Sol trip. 30 years ago Scott and Kathy (?) about A Fun Days report was written by Walter and Niki Jenkins. AZ LONGSHOREMAN CELEBRATING 40 YEARS WITH THE MESA 4-WHEELERS Lee Coppage is once again President of the M4W's! Congratulation Lee!

Attending this year's annual Log Corral Cleanup; Trip leaderlee & Bev Coppage, Walter & Gert Lieble, Ray & Pat Jenkins, Jim Kawa, Mike Drawsky, Harry Alfrey & Bob Zismann & Son. For Ray & Pat's 40 years of service, the Mesa 4-Wheelers showed their appreciation by awarding them with personalized camping chairs, an Annual Fun Days lifetime free invitation, an honorary plaque and monogrammed club shirts. Walter & Gert's first trail run in their new TJ Rubicon! After Leonard Staff, Ray & Pat are only the second active members to reach the 40 year mark. Jim Kawa pauses for the camera while maneuvering his way through the "Rock Garden". Congratulations! TRIP REPORTS Log Corral Adopt-A-Trail Cleanup Trip leader: Lee Coppage, Date: March 19, 2011 Ray does another fine job making his way through the "Rock Garden".

Jim & Lee work to remove a dead branch from the trail. This On our way back, trip leader Lee made a stop at "Log Corral" year's cleanup did not require near the effort as in the past. Our to allow the rest of us to catch up. Adopt-A-Trail sign was still securely in the ground, not buried in the wash as in past years. With a 6" lift, 35" tires, Walter & Gert's new Rubicon crawled right through the "Rock Garden" with very little effort. The "Waterfall" is an optional route and a bit more challenging, especially when there is water present. A guest of Lee drives right up on his first attempt! With less trail maintenance needed this time around, we had time to drive all the way to the southwest cove of Bartlett Lake. Here is where we sat back in our camp chairs and enjoyed a one hour lunch break. The day's temperature was in the mid 70's, perfect for setting back and taking it easy. Right at the entrance to the "Rock Garden" there are two route options. A recent rock slide moved a large boulder in the path most frequantly traveled. Jim Kawa's Suzuki was the only vehicle narrow enough to squeeze by. The rest of us had to take the left fork, which in the past was thought to be too much of a risk. Fortunately with the aid from a couple of veteran trail spotters, everyone made it through without incident.

44th Annual Fun Days Trip leader: John Cox of the Arizona Rough Riders, Date: March 31 - April 3, 2011 On the return trip through the "Rock Garden" Jim decided to take the route the rest of us drove on the way in. For the first time our annual Fun Days was held at the Boulders off-road area near Lake Pleasant at the sight where the Rough Riders hold their annual Spook Rally. Although this year we were missing a couple of our veteran members, there were a number of new families who showed up to bring this year's overall count slightly above last year's. Starting at around 8:30, Friday night, John Cox, from the Unable to see what lied ahead, Walter followed Lee's advice on Arizona Rough Riders, led us on a 2-1/2 hour night run. The skies were clear and the stars shined brightly. At the high where to place his tires while he made his way down the last points you could see off in the distance the lights of the "Waterfall". Cardinal's Stadium in Glendale. Airing up at the end of the day's run, everyone is feeling good about how well both they and their vehicle performed. When ever you make it through Log Corral without an incident, you feel a sense of accomplishment! Thanks again Lee & Bev for leading us through! Mike Drawsky Bob Biegal's 4-door JK had to work a little harder to make it up this 6 foot ledge. Fortunatly the skid plates were heavy duty after market! Fred & Alex with their stock TJ were the only other ones who needed a little extra assistance.

Saturday at 9:00am the games began. The object of this game was for the driver's partner to use the CB radio to guide them through the course in record time while blindfolded. Just before Bill put the blind fold on, Clete pointed out the course. Ray and Pat came up with this unusual game where the driver and pasenger drove forward to the stop sign, jumped out and started jump-roping to each of the 4 games. Once they have completed all 4 they must jump rope back to their vehicle, buckle up and back up to the starting line in record time! Using Darrel's CB, Amy was ready to talk Bill through the course. Walter and Gert once again do a fabulous job putting together 4 main courses. This year's main courses were chili rellenos, beef fajita, grilled chicken breast and shrimps in garlic sauce. This game involved replacing 10 blue cups with 10 red cups in record time. Each cup was placed on a stake set 100 feet apart from one another. Fred Alexander and his son in-law, Alex, are completing their final exchange. Kevin Losey can not believe the number of quality food choices there were to choose from!

Paula & Deb were just half way through the food selections and Wendi and Jim have been providing us with a wide range of musical favorites for years. After 4 hours of non-stop music on their plates are already full! Saturday evening, Wendi had barely put a dent into her massive collection. Lori & Rory Moore were somehow able to stick with the healthy fruit and salad and avoid the main dishes. That's will power! This year's officers are called up front to receive their well deserved plaques! Fred pulled out his harmonica and played along with the sounds of the oldies being broadcasted from Wendi's music collection. After Saturday nights skits and raffle were over, Lee and Bev Invited us all to sit in on their wedding.

Lee and his best man, Bob Zismann, were ready to celebrate along with the rest of us. Since the start of the club 46 years ago, this was the first wedding performed during a club event. Bill walked Bev to the alter and gave her away. During Sunday's main run we came across this rare Desert Tortise. Everyone watched in silence as Lee & Bev got ready to repeat their vows to one another. Dave Brown always looked for the more challenging line, providing us with plenty of entertaining photo shots. After the ceramony, Lee's daughter Samantha and Bev's Maid of Honor Debylee Brown posed for the cameras.

This years Fun Days left us with memorable moments and new experiances, such as Lee and Bev's wedding, a new location and lots of new and fun trails! On Sunday's run there were a couple obstacles that required just the right wheel placement in order to maintain forward progress. Once again we want to thank John Cox and his son, from the Arizona Rough Riders for leading the runs. Their knowledge of the area gave us comfidence in their leadership. Their warm and friendly personality made us feel they were having just as much fun as we were!
