1 Road Adventures And other Exciting Good Times August 2014 Official newsletter for the Northeast Iowa Waukon H.O.G. Chapter, established 1990 CHAPTER NEWS The HOG Chapter is still looking for an Editor for the newsletter. Anyone interested should contact either the Director or another of the officers. It isn t too difficult to do. A little word processing and cut and paste knowledge is really all that is necessary. The format is just reused every month. Ride to HOG (submitted by Dave Eick) On July 13, fourteen riders and 9 bikes gathered on one of the first nice riding days in a long while for 2014, for a trip to the HOG intersection (where county roads H, O, and G meet) in southwest Wisconsin. After meeting in Marquette the group rode up scenic Highway #27 to Black River Falls, WI for lunch at the Orange Moose Bar and Grill. After eating and some good photo ops we rode up to the intersection for a group and some individual photos at the intersection. To get the letters in the right order, we had to use the southbound roadway. Upon concluding the photos, part of the group took off for home or other destinations, while some stopped at the High Ground Veteran s Memorial Park along Hwy #10. This is a nice memorial, with areas dedicated to the major conflicts and bricks remembering those who served from Wisconsin. The ride back took us along Hwy #54 and 108 through the Mindoro Cut. This is the largest hand hewn cut remaining in the US and is on the National Register of Historical places. There was also a stop in West Salem for ice cream! As we were rolling into La Crescent for a gas stop, there was part of the group that left earlier. Apparently the season of road construction added to their return time and mileage count! In all, it was a great ride with pretty scenery, great weather, and a good time had by all.

DQ Ride 2014 We had a sunny day for the Dairy Queen Ride this year. We met at the Decorah Kwik Star and left with 13 bikes and 21 people attending.

She mentioned that she had heard on The Today Show that the third Sunday in July was designated as national ice cream day, back when Ronald Regan was President.

Al Adney noted that we went through all the big towns in Iowa on this ride, noting that the average population was 300 or less.

3 DQ Ride 2014 We had a sunny day for the Dairy Queen Ride this year. We met at the Decorah Kwik Star and left with 13 bikes and 21 people attending. I took a route along mostly county roads by Bluffton and up into Minnesota to stop at the Spring Valley DQ. Jan and I noted that it seemed everyone was out for DQ that particular Sunday. How fitting that was and we used it as a trivia question for a door prize at the end. From Spring Valley we headed south toward Cresco, Ia. then down through little towns to West Union, Ia. Al Adney noted that we went through all the big towns in Iowa on this ride, noting that the average population was 300 or less. At West Union we all enjoyed his and hers favorite treat and we than had a door prize drawing. Winners this year were Sue Ryan, Jim Clemens, Ardella Clemens, Bob Rottinghaus, Sandy Evanson and Jim Loeb. They all won a five dollar gift certificate at DQ. All in all everyone had a good ride and ice cream; thank goodness it only happens once a year. Till next year! 4 Secretary s Report / Chapter minutes July 12, 2014 Minutes taken by Dave Eick in absence of Secretary. Call to Order Director Steve Trumblee called the meeting to order at 1:00 PM with 13 members present. Secretary Motion was made to approve the July 2014 minutes as printed in the newsletter. Motion made by Al Adney, seconded by Quentin Quandahl. Motion carried. Assistant Director Present, Nothing to report Treasurer Randy Ellis reported a balance of $ 2, in the checking account. Motion to approve treasurer s report made by Dave Eick, seconded by Elwood Jarstad. Motion carried Membership Officer Randy Ellis reported that we have 52 members including our 2 Dealership members. Liaison Absent - working LOH August 17th- LOH ride Meet 10:00 AM Postville Pit Stop, ride at 10:30 AM. Destination Wings in Dorchester Requesting a donation of $5.00 per rider to go to Susan Loeb Memorial Scholarship Fund. Suggestion was made that the Chapter also donate $50 to this fund. Discussion among members was favorable. Motion made by Dave Eick, seconded by Darleen Rottinghaus. Motion carried Head Road Captain Present, Nothing to report Safety Officer Present, Nothing to report Activities Officer Absent Editor No one yet Director Still need to set a date for Chapter Picnic. The date will be set based on what our Activities Officer can get scheduled with the Quarry Lodge. Date will then be put in the newsletter. 5 A word from the Director July has been a nice month for riding, with warm temperatures and not much rain. It s hard to believe we are over half way through the riding season already. I hope you are all getting some saddle time. I m not getting nearly the miles on that I would like, mostly because I ve been too busy. I ve only at about 3500 miles for the season so far. Hopefully that will improve as the season progresses. The July Chapter meeting was fairly well attended with 13 members present. The July ride schedule had two excellent rides on it. Dave s Black River Falls Ride up to the Famous HOG intersection on July 13 th was a great ride. We left Marquette about 9:30 and were in Black River Falls by about noon. The Orange Moose was a fun place to eat. Of course I had to have my picture taken under the moose statue. The famous HOG intersection was neat. More pictures of course. The High Ground Veteran s Memorial near Neillsville was very humbling. I likely will stop there again. The stop for ice cream at West Salem was a nice treat. Dave has a great report on the ride in this newsletter Randy s Dairy Queen Ride on July 20 th was a great success as usual. I believe we had 14 bikes and 20 people make the trip up to Spring Valley, MN, for dinner and then to West Union for dessert. The ice cream was delicious. August will be the busiest riding month in the history of our Chapter, with 5 rides scheduled. Hopefully you can make some of them. (See the Ride Schedule) Aug 3 rd Dave is having a non-chapter ride up to Rockton for chicken with some local riders from Oelwein. He has invited any Chapter riders that would like to join them. He is leaving Oelwein Kwik Star at 9:00 AM and should be at Casey s in Marquette at about 10:00 AM. You can jump in with him there. I would love to join them but I will be in Sturgis that day. Aug 9 th will be the Chapter meeting at 1:00 PM at Waukon Harley. Aug 10 th will be Quentin s ride to Rushford. Meet at Monona at 9:30 AM and ride at 10. Aug 17 th will be the LOH ride to Wings at Dorchester. Meet at 10:00 AM at the Postville Pit Stop and ride at 10:30. A five dollar donation is requested for the Susan Loeb Memorial Scholarship Fund. The HOG Chapter is donating $50 to the fund. Aug 24 th will be the Chapter Picnic. We will meet at Monona Kwik Star at 10:00 AM and ride at 10:30. Dinner will be at the Quarry Lodge in Clermont at 1:00 PM. (at Skip-A-Way Campground) Aug 27 th we receive the Patriot Flag and Aug 30 th we will ride it to Madison. The September ride schedule needs some more rides so let us know where you would like to go and we ll plan a ride there. I would like to put in another plug for the Patriot Ride, which our HOG chapter will have the honor of participating in again this year. This will be out fifth year escorting the Patriot Flag to Madison. The flag is on its way around the lower 48 states right now, traveling 100 days and carried by 100 riders. It only makes one stop in Iowa and that is at our Dealership in Waukon. It will arrive in Waukon from Albert Lea, MN, on Wednesday August 27 th and we will escort it to Madison on Saturday August 30 th at 6:00 AM. If you would like to know more about the Patriot Tour and see where the flag is now and follow its progress around the country you can do so at The Patriot Tour website. I would like to get more people interested in accompanying us on this ride. I can guarantee it will be a moving experience. This is an open ride so you do not have to be a HOG member to participate. If you haven t been on a Chapter ride yet, come on out and join us. We always have a good time and our rides always end with a meal.
