MESA 4 WHEELERS HORN NEWSLETTER FEBRUARY 2010 Mesa 4 Wheelers, PO Box 107, Mesa AZ MESA 4 WHEELERS STAFF President Darrel Wallace Vice President Clete Hruska Secretary Pat Jenkins Treasurer Ray Jenkins Corres.Secretary Debra Wallace Membership Lori Moore Editor Mike Drawsky Rememberance Jeri Liberman Trophies Haorld Liberman Next Meeting Feb.19, 2010 Third Friday of every month, 7:30p.m. Location: Brown & Brown Chevrolet, Downstairs under sales room 145 East Main Street Mesa, AZ PRESIDENT S CORNER I want to start out by reminding every one that membership dues are due in March, nominations for new officers are this month and our Mesa Fun Days is just over a month away! With Fun Days rapidly approaching we all need to get together to make this one the best ever! If you have not yet volunteered your services, call Clete to find out what you can do to help. Doc's annual "Adopt-A-Ranch Cleanup" is next Saturday and I am looking forward to seeing you there! Every year, John, the owner of J-Bar-B Ranch and Brandon, the ranch foreman along with 3-4 ranch hands prepare for our arrival by providing an organized work plan and later, a delicious BBQ lunch, with all the fixings! For all that they do to make us feel welcome, the least we can do is show our appreciation by making a good turnout! REMEMBER WHEN? 30 years ago The February 1980 Horn noted that we were meeting at the Mesa JC Club. Also, nominations for officers were pending. Amy Bumpass, Editor Corner, noted that the increase in the cost of gas was making members more choosy on what runs to attend!! The commitee for changes to the Bylaws concerning membership, printed the proposed suggestions (such as dues: $6.50 for A & B classes; associates-$25.00!!) The February meeting welcomed new members: Hec and Donna Ramsey. Genevea Williamson wrote the trip report for Hatcher's Scavanger Hunt and Kathy Hatcher wrote the trip report for Williamson's Powder Puff Run. AZ LONGSHOREMAN TRIP REPORTS Crown King Trip Leader: Lee Coppage, Date: 1/16/10, Rating: 3.5 Our calendar of events is nearly full up through May and with all the rain we have had, this year will be a record wild flower season! So don't miss this rare oportunity to capture desert color at it's best by making plans to come out and join in the fun! See you on the trail, Darrel Starting from Castle Hot Springs Road, near Lake Pleasant, we pulled off to air down for a smoother ride and better traction. Attending today's Crown King Run: club members Lee & Sammy Coppage (Trip Leader), Pat & Ray Jenkins, Mark Pinson & Bill Mihailov, Mike Drawsky, Darrel & Deb Wallace, Jack Gray, John, Candy & Colette Guthrie, Clete & Randi Hruska, Dave & Paula Brown and guest; Cody Wallace, Robert Catrin, Bev Trende, Uvardy Shanmugiam and Kumocan Raginnathan.

Crown King (CONTINUED) I grew up around motorcycles, Harleys. You don't off road on a Harley, but for seeing the country they cannot be beat, or so I thought! I have been on sightseeing excursions on Harleys and it really is one of the most beautiful ways to see the country, but even so, I have always wondered, especially on a bike, where all those dirt roads and trails went. How far do they go? What would the world look like from up there? Then, I met Lee. My first off road trip was with the Mesa 4- Wheelers to Crown King. I was both excited and apprehensive, as I am afraid of heights. We went to the meeting on Friday night and I met some wonderful people. Then we went to breakfast at the meet spot and met a few more. Everyone had a great sense of camaraderie and you could just feel the excitement in anticipation of the run. There were even kids and dogs, which made me appreciate that it is truly a family sport, a lifestyle. After breakfast there was a lot of chatting, meeting new people, catching up with others, then a driver meeting to discuss how things would go. Lee led the run, Darrel & Deb were the tail. These people really know their stuff, were very organized, and really cared about each other. They included me like I had been there forever. We all lined up and as soon as the tail was ready, (I found it even more impressive with the CB communication) we all took off together for the trails. This part reminded me of a bike run. Once we were there, everyone got ready to roll, and I really had no idea how much it really involved to just prepare for a run. On a bike, you just map it out, set up stops, check the gas, etc, and go. They do have the leader and signals, but it is nowhere near as thorough as an off road run. Ok, everyone is "aired down" and we're ready to go. After a bit of safety advice from Lee, I sat back to enjoy the ride and enjoy it, I did! It was so awesome. Lee said on the difficulty scale it was only about a 3 1/2, but there were several places where I seriously thought, "He's never going to make that!", or "If I were driving, and came up on that, I'd turn around and go home!" I was amazed at how easily Lee and the others maneuvered these "challenges". They made it look like a walk in the park. There was a spot where one of the less experienced drivers needed spotting and without exception, everyone was there to help in any way they could. He got through with some new experience and I with some newfound respect for this group of people. I truly enjoyed the run from the obstacles to the beautiful views. Now I know what it is like to be on those dirt roads and trails that had been inaccessible to me. I saw some of the most amazing views and got a new respect for not only our beautiful country, but for this group of people who respect nature and her beauty and have the desire to go out and enjoy and truly see it. We did not see any wildlife, but I saw a lot of hidden plants and historical spots I never would have seen otherwise. I learned that you can make the seemingly impossible and /or impassible, both possible and passable. We actually got to see some snow and seriously considered a snowball fight, but opted out. Upon reaching Crown King we had a really delicious dinner with everyone relaying stories and experiences.. After dinner and shopping for the wonderful fudge in Crown King, everyone started saying their goodbyes, and made sure everyone else was good to go. Darrel & Deb were the only people to "break", but with help from others, the broken axel and overdrive didn't hold them back Lee. Sami, and I caught up with and followed Darrel & Deb to make sure they were safe getting back. Then, when I thought the evening was over, one more thing happened that really amazed me. We had offered to follow Darrel all the way home, but they said they would be fine. While we were concerned, and asked that they call if they had any problems, we were getting ready to pull off on our exit and let them go the rest of the way alone. We said our goodnights, and across the CB comes a voice. "Lee, is that you up ahead?" It was Dave and Paula. They graciously pulled in ahead of us and fell in behind Darrel to take them the rest of the way home. Talk about perfect timing! Almost as if it had been planned. I made a few great friends that day, and everyone made me feel at home and a part of the family. It was an amazing trip with only the one break. I knew then that I was hooked. I know I will never be able to view the world in the same way again. Darrel and Deb asked me at one point how I was liking it, and I can only sum up the experience in these three words - WOW!!! How Kickass!!!!! Bev Trende Mark upgraded to 40" Goodyear MTR's after running on 37's for the past couple of years. Lee had fun impressing Bev, who's experiencing the sport for the first time.

Crown King (CONTINUED) Darrel offered guidance to Clete and Randi and the rest of the group, as they negotiate their way up the half dozen stairsteps encountered along the way. Recent rains doubled the width of Humbug Creek in places, washing away parts of the road and turning it into a rock crawl. Dave assisted Darrel over the last couple obstacles, after breaking a rear axle near Oro Belle Mine. Fortunately Darrel was able to drive home using front wheel drive. At around 3:00 we reached the town of Crown King. Most of us got together at the Mill Resturant for an early dinner, while others headed down Bloody Basin Road for home. Near the Oro Belle Mine, Jack Gray made the last crossing of Humbug Creek and through the final technical section before heading up hill to Crown King. Thank you Lee for leading us on one the club's most favorite runs, Crown King! Mike Drawsky

Verde River Sheep Bridge Trip Leader: Mike Drawsky, Date: 1/30/10, Rating: 2.5 In my 12 years as a member, this is the first time that Sheep Bridge was picked as a club run which probably accounts for the near record turnout of 22 vehicles. Members in attendence, from left to right; Rory & Lori, Nate & Judi, Willard & Linda, Bob, Mike, John & Hazel, Darrel & Deb, Walter & Gert, Lee & Bev, John, Candy & Colette, Clete & Randi. In addition we had over a dozen guests who joined in the fun. A BIT OF HISTORY From a sign at the site: "The Old Verde River Sheep Bridge. The original Verde River Sheep Bridge, also known as the Red Point Sheep Bridge, was constructed at this location in 1943 by Flagstaff Sheep Company, which had been grazing sheep in the area under a Forest Service permit since "Erected with hand tools and a few mules during World War II, the bridge was constructed largely with salvaged materials. Overall length of the structure from cable anchorage to cable anchorage was 691 feet, and the distance between the towers was 568 feet. The walkway was 476 feet long and three feet wide. The towers originally were constructed with wood, as was the walkway. Soon after the bridge was completed, the wooden towers were reinforced with concrete buttresses. Each main suspension cable consisted of a pair of... lock-coil, spiral strands, which were obtained from an abandoned tramway that carted copper ore... Only the towers of the old bridge remain.

Verde River Sheep Bridge (CONTINUED) A BIT OF HISTORY "Although several other bridges of this type previously had been built in Arizona, Verde River Sheep Bridge was the last of its kind in the Southwest when it was entered into the National Register of Historic Places in In 1988, weakened by years of service and floods, the bridge was disassembled. In 1989 the bridge found here today was erected. Reminiscent of the original structure, the new bridge recalls the ingenuity of the pioneer sheepmen and a way of ranching that has virtually disappeared from the Arizona scene." Due to the recent heavy rains, the Verde River was much too high for a safe crossing near Horseshoe Dam, thus eliminating our preferred route, FR-479, along the east side of Verde River. This left us with option #2, Seven Springs Road (FR-24) to Bloody Basin Road (FR-269). The only place where some of us utilized 4-wheel drive was crossing Tangle Creek along Bloody Basin Road. Although there was 50 miles of dirt road to cover before reaching Sheep Bridge, once we arrived everyone thought it was well worth the drive. For those us who were wanting a more challenging route for the return trip home, I offered an alternate route, FR-41,from Seven Springs Road to Table Mesa, by way of New River. While doing a pre-run with Clete & Randi the week before, a fellow 4-wheeler pulled up and warned us that the rains had made FR-41 nearly impassable. Those who were up for the challenge included: Dave & Paula, Darrel & Deb, Rory & Lori, Lee & Bev and trip leader, Mike. What would have normally taken 2 hours to drive, took 3-1/2. At a little after 8:00PM we were airing up at the Table Mesa exit, at Highway 17. All seven of us decided to celebrate our marathon run over dinner at Chili's, at Highway17 and Carefree Highway. Mike Drawsky

Four Peaks Pickup This year marked the 3rd Annual Four Peaks Pickup Tim Huber & Danica Moore co-founders of this event can be proud of their accomplishment. Concerned over the increase in trash accumulation at one of Arizona's most beautiful and popular recreational sites, they decided to get the word out to those of us who use this area to come together and clean up. Support from the public, State & Federal agencies and local businesses has been overwelming. M4W members attending the day's event: Ann, Lee & Bev, Ray & Pat, Mike, Lori, Bob, Darrel & Deb, Dale & his son, Harold & Jeri and John, Candy & Colette. Standing in line for free hot dogs, pizza, soda and water. At around 9:30 we were signed in, had received a new pair of work gloves, handed a day's supply of trash bags and were on our way back down El Oso Road to Highway 17 to begin trash pick up. An hour later we followed Bob Biegel over to Sycamore to finish out the day. By 3:00 there were (5) 40-Yard dumpsters full to the top with still a line of vehicles waiting to be offloaded. Ann and Dale's son both walked away with pretty good raffle prizes. Dale's son won a high quality Lorance GPS with dash mounting bracket and Ann won a Warn winch recovery package. By 1:00 we had filled over dozen trash bags and were ready to go back to the Four Peaks staging area to take part in the free lunch and raffle! The Four Peaks Pickup was well organized, well attended and definitely worth our time! Mike Drawsky

Friends of the Rubicon and the Rubicon Trail Foundation Contact: Jacquelyne "Bebe" Theisen or Scott Johnston / FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE PRESS RELEASE: FOTR & RTF STILL COMMITTED AFTER BOS DECISION RTF and FOTR will work together to push the County Department of Transportation, to lead organizations, and agencies together to identify and employ non-explosive management techniques to minimize impacts at Little Sluice and still comply with the Board of Supervisors instructions. In the meantime, FOTR and RTF will continue to work with the County to mitigate concerns in the area by distributing WAG bags (for collecting human waste) and spill kits (for cleaning up fluids spilled by damaged vehicles); reaching out with education from the kiosks, providing roving trail patrol and mid-trail staff; and delivering internet-based education.
