1 Women's Club News October 27, 2017 View this in your browser. Dear Friends, Welcome back, snowbirds! It s good to see you again. Aren t you happy to be in Arizona rather than getting your snow shovels and mittens ready for winter? We ll be starting our annual food drive on Wednesday, November 1st, and will continue until Nov. 20th. Please donate nonperishable foods for less fortunate people in the area who find it necessary to supplement their food intake by going to a food bank. Cereals, peanut butter, rice and pasta products, canned vegetables, canned fruit, and tuna are all good choices. Be generous! I m looking forward to our Halloween Party and Potluck on Tuesday, October 31st, at noon. Have you found a costume yet? There will be prizes for the best costumes and lots of fun for all. The club will be providing Basha s delicious fried chicken and it s up to you to bring everything else for our potluck. We ll be eating at noon, and the club will be open at 1 p.m. for those of you who wish to play cards. Our fall Sunday Brunch at Briarwood Country Club will be on November 5th and it looks as if we ll have a nice group of people there. The red lockbox is out for checks now. The cost is $21.00 for members and $27.00 for guests, which includes the tax and tip. Your check must be in by Thursday morning, November 2nd to be included. As soon as the Sunday Brunch reservations are complete, we will be taking reservations for our Annual Holiday Luncheon at the Briarwood Country Club on December 6th. If you have friends that you wish to have at your table, place all the checks together in one envelope. Tables are set up for 8 people. If you re new, don t worry we ll find a place for you and the chance to meet some friendly members. Watch the bulletin board for more information. All the week s activities are listed below. Remember to check out the SCW Craft Fair at the Johnson Recreation Center on Saturday, Nov. 4th. It s amazing to see what our residents have designed. Bring your checkbooks and get ready for some holiday shopping. Thanks for your support and encouragement. See you at the club. Arlene 1

4 Day Trip and Hike at Cave Creek Park Meet at the Club at 7:00 am with departure at 7:15 am On Friday, November 24th, we will have a different kind of day trip. Since this is the day after Thanksgiving and the biggest shopping day of the year, I avoid the malls and stores. I always head for a walk in our Sonoran desert. For those of you who also tend to avoid the crowds on this day, I hope you will join me. On our treks to Cave Creek, we have driven by the entrance to the park off of Carefree Highway E Cave Creek Parkway. About a mile north of the highway we will enter the park. The Park entrance fee is $6 per car. We will slowly drive through the park and exit at the Ranger Station. Here they have nice, clean restrooms and interesting items for sale. Also they feature a few park critters for you to view. While at this area we will take time to put on our hiking shoes or a pair of sturdy shoes and socks. When everyone is ready we will head to the trailhead. Our hike today is an easy one along the Quartz Trail. The elevation gain is less than 300 feet along a 3 mile trail. We will take it nice and easy with many stops to enjoy the desert plants and mountain views. Also on this hike is the most incredible saguaro I have seen. The Park calls it Michelin Man. You will want to bring your camera or phone to take pictures of this one. Either along the trail or at a nearby Ramada, we will enjoy our lunch. The best thing to eat on a hike is a peanut butter and jelly sandwich. No refrigeration necessary. Or trail mix, a protein bar, or fruit. Just remember that whatever is carried in must be carried out. Also bring plenty of water; 2 bottles of water should be more than enough with an extra bottle in the car for the ride home. Dressing in layers for a hike is a good idea; you can peel off layers if you get hot. As you walk along and the day warms you ll be surprised that shorts and a t-shirt are plenty. A hat or visor is also necessary to shade your eyes and face. If you have a hiking stick or a small backpack or waist pack please bring it with you. Some small items to stick in your pack would be band aids, tweezers, small comb, a bandana. Call me with questions: Terrie Schroer: or me at terrieschroer@cox.net. 4
5 Holiday Luncheon at Briarwood Country Club Wednesday, December 6, am to 1pm The Women s Club will celebrate the spirit of the season with a special Holiday luncheon at nearby Briarwood Country Club. We hope you will join us as we enjoy one another s company, feast on holiday favorites, install our newly elected 2018 club officers, and enjoy the entertainment of the Ambassadors. Registration on the day of the luncheon will begin at 11 am. A cash bar and a club sponsored White Wine Spritzer will be available. Lunch will feature a choice of two entrees: Turkey or Honey Baked Ham. A house salad, assorted rolls, mashed potatoes, stuffing, and green beans almondine will accompany the entrée. Pumpkin pie will be our dessert. Beverage selections include hot or iced tea, coffee, and water. Cost for the luncheon will be $22.00 this year. The sign-up sheet for the luncheon will be on the credenza from Wednesday, November 1st through Monday, November 27th. Please put your check (made out to the SCW Women s Club) in the nearby Red Box. Envelopes will be available if you have a group of women who would like to sit at the same table of eight. Please list each name on the outside of the envelope and place the payment checks inside. After 4 pm on November 27th, no refunds will be permitted as we have committed a firm count with Briarwood. If you are unable to attend, you must find a replacement or forfeit your money. If you have any questions, or would like to volunteer to help, please contact Terrie Schroer at terrieschroer@cox.net or Click on the line below for a printable/viewable/savable flyer of this event
