Be safe out there and enjoy the holiday with all your friends and family. We have started our St. Jude s canister drive until August, if you need more I have them with me. We raised $ to start things for this year. Special thanks to Tim and Carla for $ raised as playing Mr. and Mrs. Santa Claus. Well done everyone and thank you. Now for upcoming March events. 3 March 2017 Warioto Wings Volume 2 Issue 3 P a ge 3 A Word from your Assistant Chapter Director: I am gearing up for our spring rides and getting excited about riding again. Our first scheduled ride at this time is April 15th to the Moonlight BBQ, if you haven't eaten there it is someplace you need to experience. It is without a doubt one of the best restaurants around this part of our world. Plan on making it, you will not be disappointed. The Thursday after, (April 20th), we will be leaving for Spring Fling I am really hoping to have a big group this year. We really had a great time last year and I understand they will have quite a few more venders this year. It will be interesting to see the damage the fires caused. It will be a great weekend see you there! I also wanted to remind you that all rides don't have to be on Saturdays, if you have a day off during the week, let me know and we can put a ride together for that day. Those of us that are retired are going to do some mid week riding so let us know what days work for you and we will make it happen. We are also going to have at least one Sunday afternoon ride each month so our members can fulfill their church obligations and then help us find all the DQ's around this area. Anyhow-----to make a long story short---come ON LET's RIDE!! Dave Jones Assistant Chapter Director Remember your ride coordinator needs your help planning rides. Dave Jones could use your ideas as to where to go. Also let him know how you like to ride, ie; what area, how long you like to ride, what day you like to ride, what time of day you like to ride.
March 2017 Wa ri o to Wi n g s V olume 2 I s s u e 3 P a ge 4 Chapter Educator THIS IS A TEST This is a test. This is only a test. In the case of a real emergency, would you know what to do? See if you do? 1. A plastic shatter-resistant face shield: 1. Is not necessary if you have a windshield. 2. Only protects your eyes. 3. Helps protect your whole face. 4. Does not protect your face as well as goggles. 2. More than half of all crashes: 1. Occur at speeds greater than 35 mph. 2. Happen at night. 3. Are caused by worn tires. 4. Involve riders who have ridden motorcycles less than six months. 3. When riding, you should: 1. Turn you head and shoulders to look through turns. 2. Keep your arms straight. 3. Keep your knees away from the gas tank. 4. Turn just your head and eyes to look where you are going. 4. Usually a good way to handle tailgaters is to: 1. Change lanes and let them pass. 2. Use your horn and make obscene gestures. 3. Speed up to put distance between you and the tailgater. 4. Ignore them. 5. To reduce your reaction time, you should: 1. Ride slower than the speed limit. 2. Cover the clutch and the brakes. 3. Shift into neutral when slowing. 4. Pull in the clutch when turning. 6. Making eye contact with other drivers: 1. Is a good sign they see you. 2. Is not worth the effort it takes? 3. Doesn t mean that the driver will yield. 4. Guarantees that the other driver will yield to you. 7. Reflective clothing should: 1. Be worn at night. 2. Be worn during the day. 3. Not be worn. 4. Be worn day and night. 8. The best way to stop quickly is to: 1. Use the front brake only. 2. Use the rear brake first. 3. Throttle down and use the front brake. 4. Use both brakes at the same time. 9. When it starts to rain it is usually best to: 1. Ride in the center of the lane. 2. Pull off to the side until the rain stops. 3. Ride in the tire tracks left by cars. 4. Increase your speed.
10. If your motorcycle starts to wobble: 1. Accelerate out of the wobble. 2. Use the brakes gradually. 3. Grip the handlebars firmly and close the throttle gradually. 4. Downshift. 16. The Front brake supplies how much of the potential stopping power? 1. About one-quarter. 2. About one-half. 3. About three-quarters. 4. All of the stopping power. 11. If you are chased by a dog: 1. Kick it away. 2. Stop until the animal loses interest. 3. Swerve around the animal. 4. Approach the animal slowly, and then speed up. 17. To swerve correctly: 1. Shift your weight quickly. 2. Turn the handlebars quickly. 3. Press the handgrip in the direction of the turn. 4. Press the handgrip in the opposite direction of the turn. 12. Passengers should: 1. Stay directly behind you, leaning when you lean. 2. Talk all the time. 3. Get on the motorcycle when and how they please. 4. Never hold onto you. 13. When riding in a group inexperienced riders should position themselves: 1. Just behind the leader. 2. In front of the group. 3. At the tail of the group. 4. Beside the leader. 14. If you wait an hour for each drink before riding: 1. You cannot be arrested for drinking and riding. 2. Your riding skills will not be affected. 3. Side effects from the drinking may still remain. 4. You will be okay as long as you ride slowly. 15. It is most important to flash your brake light when: 1. Some one is following too closely. 2. You will be slowing suddenly. 3. There is a stop sign ahead. 4. Your signals are not working. 18. If a tire goes flat while riding, and you must stop, it is usually best to: 1. Relax the handle grips. 2. Shift your weight toward the good tire. 3. Brake on the good tire and steer to the side of the road. 4. Use both brakes and stop quickly. 19. A car is waiting to enter an intersection. It is best to: 1. Make eye contact with the driver. 2. Reduce speed and be ready to react. 3. Maintain speed and position. 4. Maintain speed and move right. Did you make an A? How many did you miss? 11 March 2017 Warioto Wings Vo lu me 2 Issue 3 Page 10 Here are some things to remember, cut them out and put them on your refrigerator or bulletin board to help you remember. The next big thing to look forward to is the District s Spring Fling. This will be held at the same location as last year in Pigeon Forge. Now is the time to sign up and make a room reservation. There will be a Talent contest on Friday night with cash prizes. The Theme is THE FABULOUS FIFTIES so dig out something from the Fifties and lets have some fun. Dave will set up a ride to get us there and there will be guided rides over the weekend, they promise to ride places you have never been. Your news letter editor could use some pictures. These can be things you ve done with the chapter or things on your own every one loves pictures of your travels or camping trips or just day rides so please help me out. You can them to me tnchapterq@gmail.com. Watch the new year for some big changes. The staff hopes to make some changes and maybe recruit some new members The third Saturday of each month we are going to try to have a ride planned for the Chapter. This maybe a day long ride or if you want we could do an overnight ride. The main purpose is to get out and ride and enjoy each others company. Another part of this ride will be to invite the non-members to ride with us and show them how we ride and let them know a little about our chapter. So if you have friends that ride invite them to come along, it doesn't matter what they ride just that they ride safe and can enjoy a family orientated organization. Your chapter is still looking for some help. We are in need of a Dinner Ride coordinator. If you are interested in this position please let us know. One of the staff members would like to talk to you about the positions. Remember to bring your suggestions for things to do this year. Your staff would really like to plan the events you would like to attend. If you want a picnic let us know. Do you want more rides and what day and time works best for you?
KEEPING IT INTERESTING From the national Insight Newsletter Bob & Nan Shrader Deputy Directors, A, N floridadd@msn.com In previous Insight articles, we've discussed various aspects of Chapter life and how to keep things FUN and exciting for the Chapter Members. This is an on-going challenge for our Chapter Directors, as the membership and demographics change, so do their interests. This happens in every Chapter as time passes and some of our folks depart due to advanced age or health and new Members are recruited. One of the changes that we've noticed over recent years in our Chapter (FL1- A) is that more of the Members are now retired and have more leisure time at their disposal. It used to be that nearly all of our Chapter rides and other activities were planned for the weekends or only during the evenings if during the work week. This was a reflection of the fact that most of our active Members worked. As more have retired, the old formula needed some adjustment. We decided (after consultation with our Team) that we needed to offer some day rides during the work week. We selected Wednesday to begin with since it was mid-week. The format was a lunch ride, kicking off at 10:30 AM with a mystery destination. At first the attendance was just a few folks, but as the weeks went by, more riders showed up. These aren't "guy rides"; rather we encourage the lady riders and co-riders to participate also. We scheduled the rides for every-other Wednesday so that there were two per month and turn-out has, thus far been good. We also make it a point to take back roads to our destination and avoid the Interstate highways. This makes it more fun, we think. We're averaging participants for each Wednesday ride now. We've learned that for some of our retired folks, it's actually easier to find time for riding midweek than it is on the weekends. This is can be due to family (grand children), church or other social commitments on the weekends; something we'd never given much thought to. What the net effect of these week day rides has been is that it has increased the monthly total of our Chapter members who participate. The idea here is to get as many of the members participating in some Chapter activity (especially the rides) as we can. We all know that the key to achieving maximum Chapter health is maximum participation. Obviously, this idea won't work in some Chapters, where the majority of the members are still employed and therefore unavailable for week day rides unless they take leave time off. It also requires a Chapter Ride Coordinator or other designated person to set it up and lead the ride. That person must also have the flexibility to be available during the work week. But, if your Chapter has a large number of retired members and you notice that weekend participation is declining for them, consider surveying those members and finding out if there's enough interest to warrant a week day schedule of rides. It has sure worked well for us. Bob & Nan
David and Karen Hill 2017 District Couple of the Year From the TN District newsletter At the January Winter Event David and I were selected as District Couple of the Year for 2017, so I thought this might be a good opportunity to introduce ourselves. After all, we will be seeing you at one of your chapter meetings sometime this year. At least that is our goal. David and I started riding together almost four years ago after he solicited my help with a website for a non-profit nature group of which he was president. We met for lunch to discuss it, but didn t get around to talking about the website for 1 ½ hours! We had so much in common. We both loved nature and the outdoors. He was a retired biology professor at Belmont University; I had taught science to high schoolers, then wetlands to teachers through a non-profit. As Chairman I had led a group of one thousand anglers in Coastal Conservation Association Maryland (part of a nationwide network of anglers). David was President of the Tennessee Naturalist Program that he had helped start, and Treasurer for ANROSP, a national umbrella organization for volunteer naturalists. We both liked traveling, hiking, native plants and wildlife. Then David commented that he d ridden his bike to our lunch meeting, and he asked if I d ever ridden a motorcycle. My reply: I used to ride Harley and hill -climbed with my Honda Big Red trike in the hills of Montana. We were both hooked and married a year later. Together we ve ridden David s blue Goldwing to many chapter meetings across the state, to three Spring Flings, and on a slew of chapter rides. We ve spent a lot of time riding through the Smokies and just checking out where this or that road might go. Unfortunately, last fall my chronic back issues developed into a serious problem resulting in surgery to fuse L3, L4, and L5 just before Christmas. When the surgical pain wore off I realized that for the first time in 55 years my back didn t hurt. Amazing! And YES, I will be ready to ride as soon as the cold weather breaks. Besides, we now have a pretty red Goldwing trike that provides a lot more comfort for the co-rider than our two-wheeler did. It s hard to admit it, but the more years I see, the more I appreciate comfort. We look forward to meeting folks in every Tennessee Chapter and getting together with each chapter COY during the coming year. So don t be surprised to see us pull up to your meeting place in our red shirts and on our red trike! Until then, come on spring! Karen and David Hill TN District COY 2017 Motorist Awareness From the Region N newsletter January doesn t seem like the time of year that most people are even thinking about motorcycles but I know some members who will ride anytime there is not ice and snow on the roads. Now is a great time to be planning Motorist Awareness events for your chapter or district. We want to make sure the motoring public keeps us in mind way before what is considered riding season for most people. Just as a side note, in my other position as Tennessee District Chapter of the Year Coordinator, I would encourage special thought to be given to your planning of Motorist Awareness events. It is a way to show the entire Association what you have done and give them possible ideas for themselves. Ride Safe So That You Can Ride Again Tomorrow. Region N Motorist Awareness Brenda Perkinson
March 2017 Wa ri o to Wi n g s Vo l ume 2 I ssue 3 Its time to start visiting other chapters Page 11 If you looked at the calendar in this news letter you can see lots of opportunities to go visit other chapters. Jan and I love to go visit and we would like to have some of the chapter come with us. So to that end I have included our tentative visitation ride schedule in the calendar. These are the dates we are going to other chapters. If anyone would like to come with us please call or text or me and let us know. That way we can set up a ride that will fit your schedule and get us to the chapters on time. If you want to visit a chapter and it is not on our list let us know and we will try to make it work. We travel by car until the weather is good enough to ride then we ride as much as we can. We will also chase the plaques as much as we can so try to plan some rides to help out with that. When we go after the Couple of the Year Plaque it only requires Jan and I and it is given by ticket draw. When we go for the Middle and West TN Plaque it is done the same way there is no minimum number of people from our chapter required and they do a ticket draw. When we go after the TN Traveling Plaque or the Region Wanderer Plaque you must have five members attending and this is given to the highest miles traveled to the Gathering. The miles used are the total miles of all the members that attend the gathering, also if you ride your Motorcycle you get double miles for that rider and co-rider. If you have any questions about the rules please go to the district web site ( and check them out. Let s Go Visiting!
