National Region N Tennessee District Chapter H Harpeth Wings Chapter H Franklin, Tennessee We eat at 9:00 am, meet at 10:00 am at Shoney s Restaurant, Hwy 96 just west of I-65 in Franklin. 4 th Saturday of each month. Come join us at our next meeting June TNChapterH Volume 10 Number 6 June 2017 Director s Corner Hello Everyone, Gold Wing Road Riders Association (GWRRA) Friends for Fun, Safety and Knowledge Here it is June, rain seems to have slacked off some, which allows for great riding. I was just telling Thu (wife) a couple days ago that it will not be long before fall is here. When I was a kid and wanting to hurry up to grow up; my Mother use to tell me that the older I get, the quicker the time will pass. I guess I have reached the older mark because the time whizzes by now. A little over a week ago, I had a spot removed from the back of my ear. This has stopped us from riding for now. Want to give it a little time to heal before putting on and taking off a helmet. On the bright side though; it is giving me some time to make wanted changed to my new bike and getting the older bike ready to sell. If anyone is interested in the older bike, give me a call. I want to thank those chapters that came to our last meeting to visit. Will & Thu Horsley Chapter H Directors willchapterh@gmail.com

Where has the time gone? Patti and I have been doing some chapter riding with A2 and I was able to join Chapter F with their ride for senior citizens in Harrogate. I had a great time doing this event, I got to take a 93 year old lady for a ride and she enjoyed herself. She told me that her daughter told her not to ride a motorcycle and she told her she was going to ride. We took a picture so she could send it to her. The folks who participate in the ride enjoy this event so very much. These folks do appreciate what the chapter does in giving them a ride. Great job Chapter F. Man, you cannot do more for public relations than this. Patti and I also got to go to Chapter C s Steak out and did we have a great time. Good to see everyone there. Chapter C knows how to throw a party. Thanks to all the chapters who participated and helped Chapter C have a successful event. As many of you know Patti and I have adopted a dog, not just a dog but a 60 pound Husky shepherd mix. We got him from a pound in Monroe County just before Spring Fling. He got to attend Spring Fling and it looks like he will be going on the road with us. If I could just teach him how to drive. His only problem is he loves to chase rabbits, cats, and anything that moves. He has taken Patti on some sudden trips through neighbors yards. We are working on the finishing touches for Spring Fling As we said at closing this year the rod run has moved in on our third weekend and we had to move back a week. Looks like April 12 through 14 are the dates. Right now we will have the vendors, and classes, hospitality, challenges, bike show, and light show at the Country Cascades. We will have the Talent show and Closing

ceremony at the Ramada Convention Center We are also working on another great dinner and show for after closing ceremonies. Our theme is Sounds of the Sixties which should give plenty of choices for individual, couple and chapter costumes. Can t wait to see some of the singers and music groups from the 60 s on stage in the costume contests. Looks like its rally time of the year. Coming in June is the Georgia District Rally in Dalton, Georgia. July will be the Virginia District Rally In the Valley, also in July is the West Virginia District Rally. After that is the Kentucky District Rally, then Wing Ding. Then after Wing Ding is the North Carolina District Rally. The Region A Rally is in October and then the Region N Rally in November. Hope to see you at some of these rallies. Patti and I would like to encourage our chapters to get out and visit your other chapters. Chasing wood or not it is fun to go and visit. Make now friends and see how other chapter operates. We have started working on Winter Event. We are open for suggestions for locations and themes. We want to have a big party and get together. Also our Couple of the Year Selection. January is a good time to party. Until next month have fun and ride safe. Be sure to check out the new look of our website, our webmaster Michael Browder has been busy updating our site. ******************************************************************************************** From our Middle/West TN Assistant District Directors Vickie and Troy Hurt Riding Season is Here As we are writing this article we have been thinking of our Veterans that have served. Memorial Day has always been special to us and we just want to thank all our Men and Women that have served and are serving. It is great to see all the Middle Tennessee Chapters visiting with each other. In years past Chapters held fun days to raise funds but now Chapters do different things to raise funds for the Chapter. So please help your sister Chapters out while visiting and hopefully they will return the favor. There will be several Rallies coming up so please make plans to try and support them. As everyone knows our work schedule limits us to how many we can make but we plan on going to some. We will be back out visiting with the Chapters so we hope to see you at some Chapter Gatherings. We did get to go to Roan Mountain Steakout again this year. If you have got to go we highly recommend you put it on calendar for next year it really is allot of Fun. Middle Tennessee also had the Ride For Kids the same weekend and several Chapters went and supported this event. Dave and Nancy Miller worked very hard getting Ride For Kids here in Middle Tennessee. We are so glad that Chapters still support this Ride! We spent one Sunday with a Chapter while they set up a Motor Awareness event. It was really a lot of fun being there talking with the public. And we just found out that they did have a couple sign

up with GWRRA! We know some other Chapters have done this and we hope you got some new members as well. While you get out and visit with the other Chapters let them know how much you enjoy being with them. And our hats off to all the Chapter Educators in Tennessee, folks we have allot of friends riding and we have a good record about being safe. Now we have had some accidents recently, one that we know of there was a fatality. Our thoughts and prayers have been with this family. Chapter A's Assistant Directors were involved this past Friday May 26th. Brian and Ruth Fugate were going to visit with family. They had all the riding gear on and if it was not for the helmets the outcome would have been real bad. So please check the dates in your helmets. We will have the yellow dot forms with us so if you have filled one out please see us for one. This is a form for you to fill out with all your medical information for the medical personal if you are in a accident. We hope to see you at some of the upcoming events and remember to RIDE SAFE!! From our District Educators Alvin and Josie Nelson It is June already!!! Vacation time is here. With that in mind be prepared for your trip. Make sure that your bike is ready for your trip; Fresh oil, tires have proper air pressure and the tread is in great shape (get down on the ground and look), bike is loaded with weight distributed evenly, lights are working, and don t forget about the trailer same applies to it too. Are you prepared? Have you gotten outside and adjusted yourself to the higher temps and humidity? Have you practiced your riding skills; braking, cornering, and swerving? How about you re riding gear. Have you inspected it lately? Is your helmet less than 5 years old? (Check the mfg. date inside of the helmet) Do your gloves have holes on loose bindings (worn out)? Boots have plenty of tread and the laces are not about to break. When was the last time you cleaned your riding jacket? Good way to find defects. Just a few reminders to help prepare us for our ride. I can t say enough about practice. I had a close call in my car a couple of weeks ago, and I attribute the practicing of swerving on my motorcycle in helping me avoid a major accident. 1. Target fixation: don t stare at the other driver s surprised look on their face, Look to where you want to go, and make sure you have a clear path to get there. 2. No brakes when swerving! You need all of your traction for maneuvers 3. Push hard in the direction you want to go and then push hard to straighten up. 4. Once straightened up, then stop and let your heart rate return to normal.

I need some help. If your chapter educator has done something special or put some extra effort in for your chapter let me know. I need to recognize the great work that is going on out there, and the only way for me to know is for you to tell me. Just a reminder Chapter Q in Clarksville is sponsoring a ARC/TRC class on June 9/10. Contact Mickey Turner District Membership Enhancement Program Coordinators (MEPC) Dennis and Anne Greer Where is this year going? Here it is June already. Hope you have been enjoying the weather and have put many miles on your motorcycles. We had good support from other Districts in Region N and Region A at our Spring Fling. Please return the favor. GA Rally is later this month, June in Dalton, GA and the VA Rally is 6-8 July in Roanoke, VA. Go have some fun. I had the privilege to swear in 2 new Membership Enhancement Program Coordinators (MEPCs) in April and May. Congratulations to Ed & Mary Ann Grazier (TN-E) and Pat & Angie Eiting (TN-H) for stepping up and filling this important Chapter position. Unfortunately, there are several other Chapter MEPC positions open Will you be the next person to step up and help out your Chapter Director by letting him or her know you are interested and that you would like to help the Chapter out by filling this position? It was brought to my attention that I identified the Chapters of all MEPC award winners with one exception. Sorry about that Beverly. Beverly Wilson is the hard working MEC in TN-N in Jackson, TN. Go visit them and congratulate Beverly. Shoot, with the visitation TN-N has been doing she may be at one of your gatherings taking notes. I would like to hear whatever likes, dislikes, or questions you have concerning the Membership Enhancement Program so we can make it better for everyone. Please correspond with me at: TN.MEPC@gmail.com. From our Tennessee District Trainers Max and Renee Thomas Tidbits A tidbit is a word I have heard related to training, can you tell me what it means? Why yes we can. A Tidbit is a quick 10 minute overview of one of the courses that is available for presentation by an instructor or trainer. It is meant to whet your appetite to attend the full course. It is a teaser, a tickler, a summary of what the course is about and what you could learn if you took the course. It does not count as the full course, so the attendees do not get credit for attending the course. The instructor or trainer does get credit for presenting the tidbit if they fill out a U-3. The tidbits are a great way to help the chapter decide what classes they would like to have presented in full on a training day so that the participants get credit for attending the class. We hope this clears up what a tidbit is and what the purpose of presenting a tidbit is. It seems that some

were confused about the purpose of a tidbit. So the next time you hear someone talk about a tidbit you now know what they are talking about. If you would like a tidbit presented at one of your gatherings or at a Chapter meeting to help your Chapter decide if they would like to have the full course presented at a Chapter Training Day let us know and we will make arrangements for someone to make that presentation. We happen to have some information that many of the upcoming rallies will be presenting some of the new training modules that many of you have not yet experienced. This would be a great time to attend some of this new training and see what everyone is talking about. When you are planning your rally activities why not plan to attend some training while you are there. You will be glad you did. Besides, it s usually air conditioned, they have chairs, its hot outside and you ve been walking all morning. Why not take a break and learn something at the same time. Your feet and head will thank you. Rider Education David & Karen Hill, Chapter Educators The Lay er Down Myth I have heard this phrase more than once since I have been riding. It didn t make sense when I first heard it and it still doesn t make sense. I think the author of this article is right it is a myth. It doesn t work! From enginessociety.com on Facebook, May 26, 2017 Just yesterday I read an online plea from a friend of a rider who, upon entering a local rotary, was surprised by an SUV and had to lay er down in order to avoid broadsiding said SUV. Keep an eye out for this SUV, they said those jerks didn t even stop. Come sit with me for a moment, and let s think about that. The motorcycle did not make contact with the SUV. But the rider insisted that laying the bike down was the best course of action, and insisted that all of this was the fault of the SUV driver. I m willing to accept that the SUV probably didn t yield to the traffic already in the rotary per local law. Heck, that driver might have been toying with their phone instead of watching where they were going. But the blame in this case falls with the motorcyclist. Let s break it down. Last I checked, the coefficient of friction of metal and plastic on pavement was quite a bit lower than that of rubber. That is, given similar momentum, a motorcycle will slide a lot farther on its side than it will upright on its tires with the brakes well and properly engaged. So unless the brakes on the motorcycle he was riding were completely shot (not the SUV s fault) or the tires were so old they had no grip left (I know, I m reaching), or the SUV got very, very close to the rider (not bloody likely given the fact that there was no contact), the crash was entirely the motorcyclist s fault, for not knowing how to brake. Let s stop kidding ourselves, fellow motorcyclists. It does us an injustice. When we say I had to lay er down we are saying we had to crash to avoid a crash. This makes approximately zero

sense. In fact, when there is no contact you are worse off from an insurance/at-fault standpoint. When there is no contact, it is a single vehicle accident and you cannot sue anyone for damages. You cannot expertly throw a motorcycle to the pavement without some kind of training. Are local clubs holding lay er down seminars on a sacrificial bike? Have they done this so often that they know where the bike, and they, will go, upon pavement contact? Mustn t they be spending a ton of money on the gear they re replacing, or hospital bills for all that skin loss? Do yourself a favor, each and every rider. Hie thee to a deserted parking lot and learn to brake. Use both brakes. Unless your motorcycle is a relic, your brakes are better than you think they are. No toss you over the handlebars myth applies. Front brakes apply the majority of your bike s braking force, so use them. Learn to make your tires howl without breaking contact, and learn to love that sound. Learn how fast you can brake without skidding. Learn to ride out a skid that does happen. If you have ABS, learn what it does and where it engages so that it never surprises you. Knowing how to stop your motorcycle is just as important as knowing how to make it go fast, and someday, when that SUV enters a rotary, unexpectedly, right in front of you, you won t be picking up pieces of your bike in the road. You ll be cursing that ignorant driver and continuing on your ride, none the worse for wear. Okay, your brakes might be a little warm. But relegate the lay er down myth for the ages. You re just admitting that you re a bad rider. Be safe out there! David & Karen Chapter Couple of the Year David & Karen Hill Hello Fellow Wingers, Have you been enjoying the spring so far? Hopefully you already have a few new adventures to talk about. I know David and I have been busy. We spent a week at Gatlinburg checking out the fire damage and enjoying Spring Fling. Then we had a four days to repack our bags for our trip to the British Isles, a twelve-day cruise with a few days tacked onto both ends to allow me to explore first my ancestors in England (Selby), and then my ancestors in Scotland (Murray). We had rental cars those extra days, so David could drive on the wrong side of the road in a vehicle with the steering on the right side and the gear shift on the left!!! We survived the roundabouts and the two-lane roads only wide enough for one vehicle at a time. Imagine being on a bus that encounters a semi with loaded trailer on one of those two-lane roads we survived it. The flowers were blooming, the trees leafing out, and we encountered only one day of rain. It was my trip of a lifetime. We returned from this trip with only two days to unpack and repack for a trip to South Carolina to visit David s brother and attend a Bandit Race. Wow, that was quite a race! Speaking of semis, will you be joining us in the Ride to the Races on Saturday, July 1st? The Bandit Race Series will be at Highland Rim Speedway just off I-65 on the north side of Nashville. Chapters

across Tennessee are riding to the track. The green flag drops at 7 pm. GWRRA members will be seated together in the grandstand. Come early so you re not stuck in the crowd trying to enter right at start time. These events have been selling out and the small tracks are not accustomed to that. The photo above is from the start of the main event at Florence Motor Speedway on May 20th. There are fourteen bigrigs charging towards the green flag waving just to the left of the photo. Yes, I was standing next to the little yellow wall with my camera for that shot. Yes, it was exciting, nerve-wracking, and adrenaline-pumping. Ride to the track together, watch the races together, and then ride home together. I can t think of a better way to enjoy a summer day. By the way, at the races on Saturday night at the Greenville (SC) Pickens Speedway, Mike came in first! It would be an understatement to say that Karen was excited. Mike (aka 88-Mike) is Karen s son and drives Mackvader, #88, a Mack truck. Looking forward to seeing you at the race, Karen & David Hill, 2017 District Couple of the Year District Events June 18 Father s Day Georgia District Rally, Wingin at the Races. Dalton, GA.
