1 Smyrna, Tennessee The Bulletin Chapter E, Stones River Wings Gold Wing Road Riders Association July 2016 Volume 1, Issue 6 We are now into July and the year is half gone; July 9th is our July meeting date and the six month anniversary for Tennessee Chapter E. What a great six months it has been, from our kick-off meeting to the rides, rallies, chapter visits and even stops for ice cream on our way home. At every activity the members are there participating and having fun. Each month we receive the newsletters published by other chapters in the Tennessee District, while reading TN Chapter Q s newsletter I was Chapter Directors drawn to a statement in one of the articles that said The life blood of a chapter is the members, how very true that is. The blood count of Chapter E is over the top, our members are the best and it s an honor and privilege for us to serve you as Directors. At our June meeting we finalized our Dinner Basket Fund Raiser for St Jude Children s Research Hospital by conducting the drawings for seven baskets containing gift cards for free dinners or discount certificates for food at many restaurants in our area, one of the baskets donated by Mac and Janice and Walter and Barbara contained gift cards and large variety of healthcare products from the company where Mac is employed. To everyone who purchased tickets for the drawings, thank you so much for your participation and support of our efforts to contribute to St Jude. To all the members of Chapter E, what a great job you did selling tickets and promoting the Fund Raiser, you sold over 5,000 tickets, without you it would not have been such a big success, to Jim and Brenda Sterling for all your hard work colleting the donations and putting the baskets together and to Ed and Mary Ann Grazier for donating the materials and making the thousands of tickets that were sold, THANK YOU!!! We are looking forward to the events coming in the second half of 2016, in addition to our monthly chapter meetings, chapter rides; dinner rides and visits to sister chapters we have many other plans in the works. A night out at the ballpark to see the Sounds play, a chapter picnic, the KY Blast in Cave City August 19-20, our Chapter Campout August and the ride to St Jude in September just to mention a few. Also don t forget the camping trips planned for each month that is open to everyone who wants to join in the fun; for dates and locations just give me a call. Several years ago, I think it was 2006, I coordinated a bus ride to Harrah s Casino in Metropolis, IL, it went over quite well, so well in fact that the bus was filled to capacity and the ride was free along with dinner and a $5.00 credit to play in the casino. We didn t continue that in January of this year because we were busy chartering Chapter E. We will be taking the bus ride in January or February of We will finalize plans for that and pass the details on to you in the near future. We hope everyone had a fun and safe Independence Day and we will see you on Saturday July 9th at our Chapter meeting. 2 Page 2 ACCIDENT 101 After our recent MFA (Medic First Aid) class, I was talking to Mac and found that we had the same complaint It's good First Aid training but it was not motorcycle specific. So, if you happen across an accident scene of any kind, what do you do before applying First Aid? I have tried to be specific to a motorcycle accident in this article but the same process could be used for any victim of an accident. Know First Aid and be prepared to administer aid to the victim. This is why we have a Medic First Aid class and recognize anyone who has completed the course. All Rider Level 4's carry a First Aid Kit and some of us even carry a Trauma Bag and have the knowledge to Murray Dunkin use it. Chapter Educator Now that we are prepared, what do we do first if we come across a motorcycle accident? Assuming we are riding in a group, the ride leader will make the call to safely park the motorcycles out of harms way and make the accident scene as safe as possible. The ride leader will assign people to control the traffic and to safely slow and guide vehicles around the accident scene. The accident scene control people should wear yellow or orange safety vests and if available, place cones or strobes to guide vehicles safely around the accident scene. The leader will also assign someone to aid the victim, someone to make a call to EMS and someone to take notes and gather information. When assigning people, have the most medically experienced person treat the victim. The person assigned to contact EMS via 911 may have to travel to a phone if there is not a cell phone connection. They will need the following information: What happened Where you are GPS coordinates Number of vehicles and people involved Possible injuries Your name and phone number Be prepared to stay on the phone until the EMS unit arrives. The person who is assigned to take notes needs to gather as much victim information as possible. Hopefully they will have a Yellow Dot form filled out. They may have an ICE (In Case of Emergency) directory on their cell phone. Do not call the nearest relative, let the Police or EMS personnel do it. Gather names and statements from witnesses and take pictures. Gather general information and circumstances around the accident scene that can be used in the Police report. For the person or people who provide aid to the victim, assess their injuries, provide comfort and administer first aid. What you do for the victim is determined by visual and verbal observations. See if they are conscious, talk to them about their symptoms and treat most serious injuries first: 1. Heart attack and not breathing get them on their back and administer CPR. You may have to remove the helmet if necessary. 2. Not breathing, administer CPR breathing techniques. 3. Severe external bleeding. Use pressure points or apply direct pressure. 4. Internal bleeding. One of the symptoms is shock. Treat for shock. 5. Fractured bones. Keep victim immobile. Let EMS treat it. 6. Pain, not much you can do but watch for the victim going into shock. 5. Road rash and non serious injuries. Treat if able, do not make it worse. 6. Make the victim as comfortable as possible. If sunny, provide shade but do not move them. If raining, provide shelter but do not move them. Stay with them and talk to them. (continued next page)

3 Page 3 (continuation of Educator Article) 7. Do not remove helmet or clothing unless absolutely necessary. 8. Do not give water in case of internal injuries. Be prepared to stay on scene until the EMS arrives and provide the assistance as necessary. Obviously, these are my opinions on guidelines about the best way to provide on the scene treatment for an accident victim. There are not hard rules about what to do and what not to do for an accident victim at an accident scene. Sometimes, to make the best of a bad situation or save someone s life, you may have to make decisions about the best way to save a victims life. The Good Samaritan Law will protect you for any decisions made to aid the accident victim and hopefully your actions will save their life and send them on their way to a speedy recovery. Ride safe, ride smart and SEE you on the next ride. Murray We have two birthdays in the month of August. Congratulations to: Johnny Victory, August 1 & Brenda Sterling, August 2 Happy Birthday from all of us in Chapter E We also had 3 Anniversaries for the month of August. 4 Campin & Cruisin As everyone knows, we have a number of participants in Chapter E who not only enjoy motorcycle riding, but also enjoy camping in the great outdoors during the months of March through October. Surprising enough we have numerous participants in our Chapter E family who own motorcycles and recreational vehicles. Randy & Delores, Jeff & Geraldine, Walter & Barbara, Barry & Connie, Steve & Dianne, Mac & Janice, Murray, Dennis & Marty, and Mary Ann and I, are among the avid camping enthusiasts in the Chapter. And, although Jim & Brenda don t own an RV, they get a healthy taste of the outdoors and camping with the Girl Scouting program. It has become commonplace for us to schedule one camping event each month during the camping season, and to date these events have been well attended, and a great time for all... the camaraderie, meals, evening campfires, and just being with friends who have a common interest have made these really fun events. Although these events have not been considered scheduled Chapter events, Randy has extended the invitation for anyone who would like to join us, to feel welcome in doing so. I had forgotten until last year how much we enjoyed the outdoors and just chillin while we sat around the campsite, enjoying the great outdoors with friends. I, like some others, didn t think you could mix motorcycle riding and camping. We have owned a recreational vehicle of some type since 1967, camping throughout the Dakotas, Illinois, Indiana, Missouri, Wisconsin and Tennessee. That all came to an abrupt end in 2004, when we bought our first Goldwing and took up riding almost every weekend with the Chapter, or to some GWRRA event, carrying out whatever responsibilities we had as leaders in GWRRA over the past several years. In fact, our RV was parked and sat idle, with use only during a few exceptions for about five or six years. Our latest RV acquisition in 2014, renewed our quest to enjoy the outdoors and we ve found many within Chapter E, and some of our sister chapters, who have the same common interest. We were surprised to see how many other GWRRA participants also enjoy camping, when we scheduled and conducted a very successful Chapter Camping Event at Long Branch Campground, as we exited the Directorship in a previous Chapter. We had a surprisingly large turn-out, and even had participants from other Chapters in Tennessee who joined us. It is true you can enjoy two major hobbies riding motorcycles and camping, in fact we ve now proven that you can pair-up the two activities. During our June camping event, those attending either trailered or rode their bikes to the Defeated Creek Campgrounds, just beyond Carthage. During the course of that outing, we rode on two consecutive days, logging over 270 miles of some of the best, curvy, roadways that Randy could find. And, of course, we found one Sonic that provided a cooling stop. Each of those rides culminated with dinner meals at Cheddar s in Cookeville and The Timberloft in Gordonsville, before returning to our campsites. Every day concluded with the traditional campfire and even a marshmallow roast on one night. I believe we solved many of the problems of the world and decided on which problems we would just have to tolerate. This article contains photos of those who accompanied us on this outing, and enjoyed a good four days of the great outdoors and some great riding. Don t forget that we have a Chapter Camping Event scheduled for Long Branch Campground during the month of August. We have all of the sites in the vicinity of the outdoor pavilion already booked. Once again, we have some interested campers from a couple of our sister Chapters who plan on joining us. Sooooo, c mon along, we dare you to come and have a good time with us. Ride safe, ride often. Words of Wisdom: It s a shame my life can t be like the second edition of a book... I could live it again and take out all the mistakes.

7 Page 7 A Great Effort The June Chapter Social culminated our fund raising project to support St Judes Children s Research Hospital, during the upcoming Wings Across Tennessee Ride in September. The entire project was a total T-E-A-M effort, and we can all be proud of our success. To recap, we began the project with the intent to offer TWO dinner baskets, a first and second place recipient, to be selected by ticket drawing. A special cudo to Jim Sterling. Jim got on a roll and ended up with sufficient donations from local restaurants to fill FIVE baskets. He also received a gift box from Jim N Nick s BBQ in Smyrna, which was paired with three gift cards donated by Walter & Barb Donnell for a SIXTH basket. Then, Mac & Janice donated a SEVENTH basket containing health & beauty aids from Vi-Jon Corporation, where Mac works. It was a GREAT effort by all, selling over 5000 tickets for an opportunity to win one of the baskets, while supporting the kids at St Judes. Pictured here are photos of the drawing and some of the winners. COUPLE OF THE YEAR PROGRAM: With only seven months of existence as a Chapter, Chapter E has no official Chapter Couple of the Year, however it is our sincere pleasure to support the Couple of the Year Program. We have among our participants three former Chapter Couples, two former Tennessee District Couples and two former Region N Couples of the Year. It is our pleasure to embrace the Couple of the Year Program in it s entirety and consistently recognize those visiting Couples of the Year from our sister Chapters who may participate at any of our Chapter activities and events.

8 Page 8 Hi everyone, We would like to thank everyone in Chapter E for all the hard work given to our recent fundraiser for the children of St Judes. Special thanks to Jim Sterling for making the baskets and helping to get sponsors and Ed and Mary Ann for making all those colorful tickets for the drawing. We had several winners that day. One of our winners actually came to Shoney s immediately after the drawing and was presented her dinner basket by Jim Sterling. I delivered one of the baskets to a Miss Clarice Leyhew, whom I understand is a cancer survivor. She was very surprised when I brought a winning basket to her home that day. She was amazed that she had won based on the huge number of tickets that we had sold. She thanked me and said she was so glad that we were helping the children at St Jude s. Great Job Chapter E. America the Beautiful: O beautiful for spacious skies For amber waves of grain For purple mountain majesties Above the fruited plain! America! America! God shed his grace on thee And crown thy good with brotherhood From sea to shining sea A piece of history. Have you ever wondered who wrote the song? "America the Beautiful" as an American patriotic song. The lyrics were written by Katherine Lee Bates, and the music was composed by a church organist and choir master, Samuel A. Ward. In1893 at the age of 33, Bates an English Professor at Wellesley College had taken a train trip to Colorado to teach, a short summer school session at Colorado Springs, Colorado, at Colorado College. Several of the sights on her trip inspired her, and found their way into her poem, including the World s Columbian Exposition in Chicago, the "White City" with its promise contained with in its alabaster buildings ; the wheat fields of America s heartland Kansas, through which her train was riding July 16 and the majestic view of the Great Plains from high top Zebulon s Pikes Peak. On the pinnacle of that mountain, the words of the poem started to come to her, and she wrote them down upon her return to her hotel room at the original Antler s Hotel. It quickly caught the publics fancy. Amended version s were published in 1904 and At various times in more than a 100 years that have elapsed since the song was written particularly during the John F. Kennedy administration, there have been efforts to give "America the Beautiful " legal status, either as national anthem equal to, or in place of, The Star Spangled Banner", but so far this has not succeeded. I hope everyone enjoyed their 4th of July as we all celebrate America s independence. Ride Safe! Be Aware! and most of all Have Fun!! 9 Fourth of July 2016 Page 9 Eden, Jackie & Murray Delores & Randy Ooh... Ahh July the 4th was another enjoyable event for Chapter E. Randy, Barry and Ed went out of their way to secure a great site for the Chapter to view the Murfreesboro Annual Fireworks Display. They left for the park early in the morning to make sure we had a great position from which to view the display. The rest of us showed up at about 4:00 with picnic style dinners and just hung out until the fireworks began. Well, we didn t just hang out... we made wise use of the time with a meal and a game of Pass the Trash. I get to brag a bit, because I won, first time in a long time. We were positioned at the immediate entrance to the park, with a Motorist Awareness Look Twice Save A Life Sign posted right next to Ed s Slingshot, so we should have experienced great motorist awareness exposure. Half of the people who came to see the fireworks had to drive right past our sign and the bike. That thing sure creates a lot of interest. We had fourteen participants and ten guests present for the activity. The day was dry, although there had been a forecast for intermittent rain. Well, let me tell you it INTERMITTED like crazy immediately after the fireworks finale. It rained so hard that Ed said he heard a frog yelling for help. Another good day with friends and a different activity. The rain (deluge) just presents another memory. As the guys say, some days are just better than others. With a wealth of COY experience to share, Lyn & Lynn will deliver the goods! (District Director s Comments, Extracted in part from June edition of Tennessee District Newsletter) The District staff is working hard to make Spring Fling 2017 one of the best yet. We have had one little problem though and it concerns the Masters Breakfast on Saturday morning. When I contacted the restaurant they said the price would be the same for 2017 so we put that on our early flyers. Well a day or so later when we got the contract there was a change in the price, so the actual price for the Masters Breakfast is going to be $ We had already published our registration forms so we had to redo the form to show the new price of the breakfast. Sorry about that but we were doing what they had told us before we got the contract. Our new flyer does show the correct price of $15.00 and there is only seating for 75 people. So if you want to attend the Masters breakfast be sure to register early and we cannot register on site. Now, that brings us to the Hatfield & McCoy Dinner show after closing on Saturday evening. This year our registration form allows you to register and not have to go to a web page or wait until January. So when you register for Spring Fling you can register for the dinner show also. The show can hold up to 700 people and if we get about 500 people registered it will be a exclusive GWRRA show. I know you are going to enjoy this show and dinner. They have made us a great price of $35.00 a person. Lets fill up this show. While on the subject of Spring Fling I would like to remind the members to give us input in the Chapter Director of the Year Award, Audrey Baston Award. We would like to see more input for these awards. Patti and Vickie have worked hard to put together Winter Event. I think it is going to be a good one. We would like to see all our Couples of The Year come and attend and participate. Our Winter Event/Couple of the Year Selection will be on January 14th at the Lane Agri-Park in Murfreesboro, TN. Our theme is Winging In The New Year. James & Jerlene Smithson are stepping down as our District MEC s. They have done a terrific job and we want to thank them for all their hard work.
