1 Smyrna, Tennessee The Bulletin Chapter E, Stones River Wings Gold Wing Road Riders Association September 2018 Volume 3, Issue 9 SENIOR CHAPTER DIRECTORS Time passes so fast, it seems we just get one newsletter out and it s time for the next one. I guess the old saying time flies when you re having fun really applies. August has been a fun month for Chapter E; we started out the month with 13 of our members riding to Lebanon to visit Chapter L at their meeting on the 4 th. After the meeting we rode to Scottsville, KY with Chapter A for a great lunch at Harpers Catfish Restaurant. Saturday August 11 th was the date for our August meeting and The Fund Raiser drawings and silent auction for St Jude Children s Research Hospital; a big success. Ed Grazier our St Jude Coordinator s article will cover all the details of the drawings, silent auction and final results. I do want to thank everyone for all you did for the Children at St Jude. The next weekend, August 18-20, 24 Chapter E members and 14 guests gathered at Long Branch Campground at the foot of Center Hill Dam for Chapter E s Third Annual Campout and Picnic. What a time we had, so much good food and fellowship. The next weekend we were on the road again; Saturday morning 12 Chapter E members traveled to Franklin to visit Chapter H at their August meeting. Chapter H had the District and Mid/West TN Traveling Plaques available for capture; Chapter Q from Clarksville captured the District Plaque and we captured the Mid/ West TN Plaque; it s awarded by a drawing and Johnny had the lucky ticket. Thanks to all who came out to visit and support our sister Chapter. 2 Page 2 (Director s comments continued from page 1) After Chapter H s meeting we rode to The Campbell s Station Restaurant near Culleoka for lunch; the restaurant is in an old store near the railroad crossing, good food served in a place with a lot of history. I think someone found the historic outhouse while we were there. OTHER KEY CHAPTER STAFF Sunshine Lady Janice McGlothlin 50/50 Coordinator Geraldine Jones Motorist Awareness Tim & Carol Moore Special Event Coordinators Art & Doris Seely Tomorrow morning we will be on the road to Knoxville to enjoy Wing Ding for the next four days. After Wing Ding our next ride will be Wings Across Tennessee, this is the ride to St Jude Children s Research Hospital in Memphis to deliver our donations. Since the Wings Across Tennessee Ride is on our scheduled meeting date we will have our September meeting on Thursday September 6 th. Its true August was a busy month and it appears September will be the same, so come join all the activities from bowling on Mondays to the Wings Over The Smokies Rally in Waynesville, NC at the end of the month. From the desk of your Newsletter Editor: Barbara M. Donnell Just a reminder that your newsletter articles need to be turned in by Friday, October 5, for our October Newsletter. November 10th is Clarksville s Veterans Day Parade. Smyrna s Christmas Parade is December 2. Remember to come out and sharpen your bowling skills on Mondays at the Smyrna Bowling Alley. 3 Page 3 Can you believe it, it s almost fall once again. This summer has been a hot one, and most assuredly a humid one, with all of the rain that we have experienced this year. We are looking forward to some cooler riding weather as we progress into September and consider the major riding events that are scheduled for the remainder of the year. Randy has made sure that we can all enjoy these events as a group and blocked the rooms for the Wings Across Tennessee, and Wings Over Smokies events, and you should soon hear of arrangements for the Clarksville Veteran s Day Parade lodging. Although it s now almost history, our Fund Raising Events for St Jude Children s Research Hospital have once again been a huge success. It s been a real team effort, with everyone pitching in to increase sales of donation tickets and in gathering donations from the many local merchants who donated gifts and prizes for the drawing and silent auction. Randy and Barry will soon be announcing the amount of monies that we collected and will be awarding to St Jude Hospital on September 8. As the coordinators for the project, each of you helped to make our job easier. Thanx! Don t forget to frequent or express our appreciation to the many businesses that made donations to our event. The real beneficiaries of your efforts will be the children and research staff at St Jude. On a training note, we will be conducting an MFA/CPR class immediately following our October Social. Contact Mac, if you need a seat in the class to remain current in the Levels Program in Rider Education. Some conversation is already in the making for a training day in Middle Tennessee, in the early part of 2019 before the riding season begins. More information will be provided as it becomes available. It s now up to each participant to monitor and maintain currency within the levels program. With the change in securing this information, you need to remain cognizant of when you need to update your qualifications to properly maintain your level. Need help on how to monitor this information, contact Walter and Barbara for instructions on how to monitor your own information. On a membership note, please be sure to maintain your personal membership to the Gold Wing Road Rider Association in active status. Mary Ann or I will generally mention the coming of individual renewal dates, to help everyone remember. These reminders are primarily to assist our people in avoiding a lapse in membership, just in case it slips your mind. We have received information pertaining to the Tennessee District revision of their Chapter of the Year Program and the requirements for reporting. We ll discuss these requirements at a future Team/Planning Meeting. Thanks to our greeters at the monthly Social, for insuring that everyone attending signs in, and is welcomed to our Chapter event. OOPS, almost forgot to mention the Chapter Annual Campout at Long Branch Campground, below Center Hill Dam. What a turnout and what a good time we all had. The food was plentiful and our ladies outdid themselves once again. During the course of the four day event, the pass the trash games were quite active, almost to the point of controlled violence. If my memory serves me right, the winners were Barry (two games), Murray and Jeff. Murray, Barry, Dennis and Ed broke away on Thursday morning for a round of golf, at what I can only term as a quite challenging course. We had a large group from Chapter E, and also participants from Chapters A and Q. Until next month remember, that our common bond is the riding and traveling on motorcycles with friends. This is just a hobby. We are always Friends for Fun, Safety and Knowledge. Ride Safe, Ride Often! Ed & Mary Ann Grazier Chapter Membership Enhancement Coordinators Don t forget to: Look Twice, and Save A Life

4 Getting Ready to Ride When taking a trip on a motorcycle one usually thinks of preparing their motorcycle first but you should prepare yourself as well as your bike. You should never plan to leave after a long day at work, be sure to start with plenty of rest and a good breakfast. Next try to set a destination that you are going to try and reach each day, do not try to ride beyond your mental and physical limits. This could lead to fatigue and a fatigued driver is as dangerous as a person driving under the influence. Chapter Ride Coordinators Now that you re ready to ride it s time to prepare your Walter & Barbara Donnell motorcycle. It s a good idea to take your motorcycle and have it checked out by a certified mechanic. Have them check all your fluids, seals, bulbs, braking system and don t forget to have them check the condition of your tires. If one tire is bad the other isn t far behind so I would replace them both. Next if you are pulling a trailer it will need to be checked out. Be sure to check the bearings, tires, lug nuts, safety chains, hitch, lights and if it is equipped with a cooler or luggage rack make sure it is securely fastened. Lastly don t forget to wash your bike and trailer to check for any damage that may be hiding behind the dirt. Your helmet will also need to be wiped down and checked. While on your trip be sure to check your motorcycle at every stop before you get on and after your get off. Having a checklist will help remind you of the things you want to be sure and check. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure and the most dangerous mile is the one ahead of you. Remember Safety Is No Accident!!! Page 4 (Extracted from the TN District Director Article, September, 2018) We were very surprised to hear Wing Ding 41 would be in Nashville. We were told at the Directors Meeting that they are considering bringing back the Chapter Educators. It will not be the same as before and no paperwork. Hopefully they will have this in position soon. I think that this position is needed at the chapter level. Good to see they are bringing the educator position back. Place oil and sugar in a large bowl and beat with an electric mixer on medium -low until they come together, 1 to 2 minutes. Add vanilla, then the eggs, one at a time, beating well after each addition, until the mixture is thickened and smooth, about 2 minutes. Stop the mixer and add the mashed sweet potatoes and dry ingredients and beat on low speed until combined, 45 seconds to 1 minute longer. Fold in pecans, transfer batter to prepared Bundt pan, smoothing the top with a rubber spatula. 7. Bake cake until golden brown and top springs back when lightly pressed with finger, 1 hour and 20 minutes. Remove the pan from oven. Let the cake cool in the pan for about 20 minutes. 8. 11 Interesting Motorcycle Facts Page 11 By Sarah Manchester 1. One in five upgraded bikes in inner cities gets stolen. People believe that Harley Davidson is the most stolen motorcycle when in fact it is Honda. The next most stolen are: Yamaha, Suzuki, Kawasaki, and Harley Davidson. 2. The Fonz (aka Henry Winkler) couldn t actually ride a motorcycle. Steve McQueen s motorcycle from the scene at the end of the movie The Great Escape (1963), was the same motorcycle that The Fonz rode on in Happy Days (1974). When he rode the motorcycle in the show, it was actually mounted on a piece of wood on wheels. For the action shots during the show, they would simply wheel the motorcycle to give the effect that he was riding it. The reason Henry Winkler wasn t able to ride the notorious Harley Davidson in the show was because of poor co-ordination which is a symptom from his dyslexia. 3. In the 1920 s some farm boys, who became known as hog boys, continuously won motorcycle races and had a live hog as their mascot. After a win, they would put the hog on the motorcycle and do a victory lap with it. In 1983, Harley Davidson formed a group called HOG., Harley Owners Group. Eventually Harley Davidson attempted to trademark the word hog, but lost he case. In 1999, it was officially ruled that the term hog officially meant any generic type of large motorcycle and could therefore not be trademarked. 4. Slick tires offer more grip on wet roads than treaded tires, up to the point at which they hydroplane. The slick tires have more velocity with a minimum about of effort. They have more grip than other tires when on asphalt, and other hard, even surfaces. Slick tires sometimes have a V-shaped grip pattern which helps on wet roads. Because they have limited groves in the tires, water doesn t get trapped in the tire which normally causes hydroplaning. 5. Did you know 25 Percent of motorcycle bike claims are fraudulent?
