1 GWRRA Texas Chapter O - Capitol Wings Texas Gold Chapter of the Year / 2008 Texas Chapter of the Year / 2007 GWRRA Internat l. Chapter of the Year A Word From Your Chapter Directors Lyle & Sheri Altes Well, here we are entering a new year after finishing an eventful We hope everyone had a very Merry Christmas. At least the weather was nice and we cannot say that for much of 2018 as it was a very wet and stormy year. But, hopefully 2019 will be much better and we can get in a lot more rides and trips in the coming months. It sure was great to see a lot of you at our annual Christmas Party. It was so good to see some of our friends we have not seen in a while. We certainly missed several of you but we know how busy everyone is at that time of year. Hopefully all of you can make it next year. We all had a great meal, lots of fun visiting and having the gift exchange and, of course, the cake and ice cream at the end. Special thanks to Charlie and Julie Diggs for the Cake and Ice Cream again this year. Coming up is our Annual Polar Bear Ride. We hope a great many of you can join us this year. It is always a great way to kick off the New Year. We will be going to the Dead Fish Grill overlooking Lake Belton but please don t let the name throw you off. It s just a name and everyone that I have talked with has said the food is very good with a lot of variety on the menu. As always, we have no idea what the weather will be like on New Year s Day but right now it shows to be dry but cool. In the event that you cannot ride or it is too cold to ride - please join us anyway. Come in car or truck or any way you can so we can get together and celebrate the New Year. 3 Chapter Participation Ken & Teri Burnett Assistant Chapter Directors Hey O! Here it is, the end and beginning of another year. Where did the time go? It was good to see everyone at the Christmas party. It seems that everyone had fun and there sure was a lot of presents exchanging hands, some many times. I would like to thank you for your participation in our rides and gatherings. We had fewer rides this past year, but we had great turn out for all of them. We always talk about riding more and many of us would like to get out and ride more, but life and other things seem to get in the way. That's why we ask foe everyone's help in planning rides. We all have personal lives and other responsibilities that can get in the way of joining in at certain times. This is why the chapter would benefit from multiple ride coordinators and other help in planning rides. The other obstacles to the amount of rides are Rally season, crazy Texas weather and the Texas heat. I know that we say this every year, but hopefully we will have more rides this year and with everyone's help we can. I would like to say Thanks to Robbie for planning the Polar Bear ride. I hope to see you there or at another ride soon. Ride safe and ride often.

5 New Year s Resolutions Texas District Educators It s a brand new year and most of us will at least think about resolutions to make us happier, healthier, and better persons. It s also a good time to think about how you can improve your motorcycling lifestyle and enjoyment. Here s my top ten motorcycle resolutions for 2019: 1. I will ride more Last year was a lot busier than I anticipated and even though Kathy and I traveled many miles for our ICOY activities, I found myself in a car much more often than on two wheels. I want to remedy that this year. 2. I will wear ATGATT All The Gear, All The Time. I am pretty good at this, but I admit that when I run to the store or on an errand, I may not don my jacket and boots. As a Level 4 Senior Master Tour Rider, I have pledged to wear all safety gear every time I get on one of my bikes. I ll strive to do that. 3. I will ride each of my bikes at least once a week I tend to jump on the scooter to run around town because of its light weight and convenience, but I plan to ride the Wing every couple of trips. Keeps the fluids circulated, battery charged and my skills sharp. 4. I will participate in more charity rides I used to do several of these a year, but only did two in the last year. It benefits the community and helps promote a positive image for riders. 5. I will take multi-day road trip Kathy and I have fond memories of riding to Big Bend or Palo Duro and spending multiple days in the saddle. (332370) Time to do it again. 6. I will ride 1/2 of Route 66 Kathy and I did the first half of Route 66 from Chicago to Amarillo two years ago. Time to finish this bucket list item travelling from Amarillo to Santa Monica this year (also takes care of resolution above). 7. I will pay more attention to bike maintenance I admit I don t change my fluids as often as I need to. I also have parts I bought a year ago and have still not installed. Time to fix that. 8. I will attend several GW Modules I think everyone should make this a resolution. I always learn something new or am reminded of something I know but have forgotten. The new updated training modules (both Rider Ed and other areas) offer us help in riding skills and life/leadership skills. Please contact your CD or us to request a particular training for you or your chapter. 9. I will invest in heated gear I m tired of being cold. Will also help extend my riding season. 10. I will visit more chapter events and gatherings Even though Austin is only reasonably close to four other chapters, I keep up with all Texas chapters through their newsletters and websites. There is a lot of FUN being had out there and I want to be part of that. Look for us out and about this year. I challenge each of you to contemplate next year and how you can increase and enhance your GWRRA experience. Hope to see each of you on the road soon. Ride Safely, Ride Often, and HEY! Be careful out there! Randy and Kathy Reese Texas District Educators International Couple of the Year All The Gear All The Time txed@gwrra-tx.org

6 Kathy Reese Newsletter Editor Motorcycle Ownership Among Women Climbs to 19 % Women make up 26 percent of the market! Are you paying attention, manufacturers? By Tricia Szulewski, Assoc. Editor Women Riders Now 11/30/18 Women are charging forward! The Motorcycle Industry Council's (MIC) annual survey indicates that, in 2018, 19 percent of motorcycles were owned by women. Almost double in 9 years! Digging deeper by age, women owners represent an even larger share of the market: years old = 22 percent years old = 26 percent Women Riders Hold the Keys Women and girls of all ages and backgrounds have discovered motorcycling and the exhilaration and sense of community it brings. While this may not be news for those of us who are paying attention, the release of this data is catching the attention of industry leaders and aftermarket manufacturers who have been ignoring the fastest-growing segment of the industry. Looking ahead, we should see more gear, bikes, and services marketed to women. But it s our job as a community to keep the OEMs and manufacturers on their toes, making our voices heard. Commitment to Women in Leadership Positions It s also our job to continue filling high-level industry jobs where we can make real decisions and changes from the top. WRN has been committed to women riders for more than a decade, and its founder, Genevieve Schmitt, is just one of many women in motorcycling who has continuously pushed to make women s presence known to manufacturers will mark 20 years for me in motorcycle media, and I continue to be re-energized by the excitement I see from newcomers in the sport. Women Motorcyclists Outspend Men The 2018 owner survey also found that women motorcycle owners spend, on average, $574 a year on tires, routine repairs, maintenance, replacement parts, and accessories and modifying equipment, compared with $497 by men. Talk to your dealers and suppliers wherever you buy products and motorcycles. Tell them what you want, what you appreciate, and make sure they know why you are choosing to spend your money with them. Support those who support women in motorcycling. (One way to know who supports women motorcyclists is to see who is advertising on WRN shameless plug, but true.) More on the MCI Survey The MIC polled 2,472 adults nationwide for the 2018 Motorcycle/ATV Owner Survey. For decades, the MIC surveys have served as the census of motorcycling, and have tracked a steady growth in the percentage of women who own bikes. Nearly one in five motorcycle owners is now female, compared with one in 10 less than a decade ago, and the data suggests that women could soon make up one quarter of owners, which would be a major shift in motorcycling demographics, according to the latest national survey by MCI. As the number of Boomer and mature motorcyclists shrink and are replaced by newer riders, we could soon be looking at a solid 25 percent of motorcycle owners being female, said Andria Yu, MIC director of communications.
