1 Smyrna, Tennessee The Bulletin Chapter E, Stones River Wings Gold Wing Road Riders Association June 2018 Volume 3, Issue 6 Chapter Officers SENIOR CHAPTER DIRECTORS Here we are, the evening before Memorial Day, where do the days and weeks go? Memorial Day; a day designated as a holiday, but more important it s the day we remember and honor the men and women who gave their lives for our freedom. The Land of the Free Because of the Brave, we see this printed on so many things from clothing to banners, but do we really stop to think how true it is. We should remember and honor those Brave Americans every day. When you see a member of our armed forces take just a moment to thank them for their service; that Thank You means a lot to them. Thanks to all who attended our May meeting, we had 20 Chapter E Members and 14 Guests present. The afternoon after the meeting was busy for us getting ready for a party that evening to celebrate Graison s high school graduation. He sure did appreciate all his fellow Chapter E Members that took the time out of their schedule to come celebrate with him; from Graison to you, Thanks So Much. Our St Jude Fund Raiser is doing great; let s keep the ticket sales and collection of donations going. We had a ticket making session on the 15 th of May so we have plenty of tickets if you need more. Thanks to all who joined the assembly line to make the tickets; we had a lot of fun while getting the job done. The Picnic in the Park at Lee Victory Park in Smyrna was attended by 18 members and one guest. The guest was my brother Mike from Hendersonville, NC, Mike always enjoys visiting with the Chapter. Two of the members present were our newest members, David and Sharon Netherton. We welcome David and Sharon to our Chapter E Family, we are glad they chose us. The Pass the Trash game lasted until the parks closing time causing a change in the rules to make the game go faster. If you had the low card you forfeited all the quarters you had left, disappointing if you had three quarters left. Despite having to cut the game short and the weather turning a little cool after the storm moved through, we had fun getting together with everyone. Chapter E has a Bingo trip to Kentucky Downs scheduled for Saturday evening June 16 th; we will leave from the old K-Mart parking lot just across from Shoney s in Smyrna at 1:30 pm. We will eat dinner at a Steakhouse in Franklin, KY before going to play Bingo, come join in the fun. July 8 th thru July 13 th the dates for the Chapter Campout at Defeated Creek Park; this is not the Third Annual Chapter E Picnic and Campout at Long Branch Campground; that is scheduled for August If you are not camping in July you are welcome to visit anytime or come up for our dinner out, usually on Wednesday night, just call and let us know you are coming. We have another event in the works for July that we will discuss at our next planning meeting; should be fun. Also, hotel arrangements have been made for Wing Ding from Wednesday August 29 th thru Friday night August 31 st, that s check-in on Wednesday and check-out on Saturday. If you should want to arrive earlier or leave later I m sure they will accommodate you, just ask when you make your reservations. If you should need more information than I originally sent in my just call. Remember, our St Jude Fund Raiser concludes and the drawing and silent auction is August 11 th. Let s keep the ticket sales and collection of donations going strong. 2 Page 2 First, let us give a huge Chapter E welcome to David and Sharon Netherton of Smyrna, who have been visitors to our Chapter and as of the Chapter Picnic in the Park have become members of GWRRA. Speaking of the Picnic in the Park, we had a good turn out for that event this month, as our monthly dinner ride. We had a large game of Pass the Trash, which came down to a real show-down between Dave Netherton and Randy, with Randy coming out on top. The horse shoe game was a real wash out. Randy s brother Mike who was visiting and Dalton were ahead when the rains came. Although, I must admit we (Randy and I) were coming on strong when the game had to be called (due to excessive humidity). Many of us have been camping over the past month. A small group spent a few days at Harpeth River Bridge Campground. The group was small, because there were only a few spaces available, and we wanted to make sure that Mac & Janice could enjoy their new bumper pull unit. Mac can only get off on weekends, and we had to get the only sites that seemed to be available for that weekend. Others have also been camping, cause Barry had to show off and send a photo of the largemouth bass he caught while he and Connie were camping along a lake. Don t forget, make plans to join the Chapter for the annual camp out and picnic at Long Branch Campground, below Center Hill Dam in late August. We have a number of activities planned in the coming months, all of which were discussed at the monthly planning meeting at Shoney s during the past week. Some future plans include another trip to Kentucky to play Bingo, participation in this year s Uncle Dave Macon Days at Canonsburg, two scheduled camping events, weekly bowling and some enjoyable bike rides. Congratulations are in order for Jeff and Geraldine, who are now the proud owners of a GW 1800 Trike. It still needs a little work, but they look forward to some serious riding on their bike in the near future. We re sure Jeff (Geraldine) will be more comfortable on a trike, when they get used to it. Remember to keep your membership current, and to plan to join us for as many of our planned activities as you can. When you re not there we miss you, and you miss out on all the fun. Ride Safe, Ride Often Ed & Mary Ann Grazier Membership Enhancement Coordinators Chapter E Tidbits Delores Galloway and Murray Dunkin won the 50/25/25 Janice McGlothlin took home the Quarter Fund for May. We would like to Thank guest Dewey Jackson for attending our May Social. Remember to come out and sharpen your bowling skills on Mondays and Wednesdays at the Smyrna Alley. Don t forget our Bingo Trip to Kentucky Downs June 16, we will leave from the old K-mart in Smyrna at 1:30p. Sending love, prayers and well wishes out to Dennis Wolfe s dad who has been in the hospital and Johnny Victory who has pneumonia. 3 Murray Dunkin Chapter E Assistant Ride Coordinator BE SEEN AND SAFE Page 3 One of the tenants of safe riding is to occupy the left track in the lane which you are riding. You will be more visible to traffic and you have a better vision of the overall road conditions and traffic. This is a good rule of thumb but it is not necessarily the only factor when selecting which track to ride in. When meeting or being passed by a car or truck, shift to the center or right track to give yourself a cushion from flying debris. If there are excessive potholes and rough road conditions, ride in the center track. Be mindful that there may be loose rubble and oil in the center track. Where vehicles come to a stop, there can be excessive oil build up in the center track which can be very slick. When riding in a group behind trikes and slings, maintain your stagger but follow the 2 second rule as they tend to use the entire lane. There has been a change in doctrine for executing the turns in the twisties. It was that when doing a left-hand curve, start in the right track and turn through the left track at the apex of the turn and exit the turn in the right track. Now, it is recommended that the turn be in the center track at the apex to avoid on coming traffic that may drift over the center line. Right-hand turns are still the same (start in the right track, left track at the apex and right track as you exit the turn. We can discuss this further at the chapter gathering. Ride to be seen. Be polite and courteous in traffic and ride smart. Ride so the drivers in other vehicles can see you in their mirrors. In the daytime, ride with your bright lights on and wear colorful clothing. Pay attention to what is going on around you and be ready to react. Use the SEE method to scan, plan and react if a hazardous condition arises. Even professional athletes at the top of game practice all the time to become better. Take the time to go to a parking lot to do some practice riding and evening sign up for a rider refresher course. Ride safe and SEE you on the next ride. (Extracted from the TN District Director Article, June, 2018) Spring Fling 2019 News We are invited to ride in the big parade that Pigeon Forge holds each year. It will be on Friday night about 6:00 PM. We will get more details for you. This was once the Dolly Parton parade. We also have the Hatfield s and McCoy s dinner show on Saturday night. We have the link that you can go to reserve your seats. We will put that out later. Their 800 number is and the coupon code is goldwings. The posted price is $36.00 per person. I went on line last night and booked a table for 4. The way it is set up on line by tables, so if you are going to sit as a group you might ought to get together and book at one time. I will work on this issue some more. We are also going to have a logo contest for Spring Fling 2019 and the winner will get free registration for two. The theme is Let s Go Hawaiian! See what you can do with that. We will need that by January 1, National has done a survey about GWRRA losing members. They sent each district a number regarding the percentage of membership lost last year. Tennessee had a 9.84 percent loss in membership last year. They have several suggestions on how to recruit new members and keep our current members. One was a suggestion that we offer a recruiting contest for the members and chapter. Here is what we have come up with. The Tennessee member that recruits the most new members will get free Spring Fling Registration for two. The chapter that has the most new membership recruited will get their charter fees paid by the district. Starting now and ending January 1, You can keep a list of the new members and send them to me by e mail. Be sure and put your name and the person recruited name, and the name of the chapter. Lets go recruiting. Gary & Patti Hamilton Tennessee District Directors

4 Page 4 Easy Barbecued Ribs 5 pounds (2 racks) pork baby back ribs 1/4 cup of water 3 to 4 tablespoons seasoned salt such as Lawry s 1 tablespoon all-purpose flour 1 cup of your favorite ketchup-based barbecue sauce 1 large oven cooking bag (14 X 20 in.) Directions: 1. Place a rack in the center of the oven and preheat the oven to 325 degrees. 2. Cut the ribs into 2 to 4 rib sections an rub them all over with seasoned salt. Place the flour in the oven-cooking bag and shake it. Put the bag in a large oven roasting pan and arrange the ribs inside in a single layer, then add the water. Gather the ends of the bag together and secure them with a nylon tie. Cut six 1/2 inch slits in the top of the bag so that steam can escape. 3. Bake the ribs until they are browned and cooked through, about 1 1/2 hours. Remove the pan from the oven and carefully cut open the bag. Transfer the ribs to a platter and set aside. 4. When ready to cook, preheat the barbecue grill to medium-high heat. 5. While the grill is preheating, brush the ribs on both sides with the barbecue sauce. Place the ribs on the hot grill and cook 4 to 5 minutes per side. Reduce the heat to low. Baste the ribs with more barbecue sauce, if desired, and grill them until the sauce has formed a glaze, 1 or 2 minutes per side longer. Let the ribs rest about 20 minutes, loosely tented with aluminum foil, then serve. 7 Page 7 Our life together, where do I start? I guess I ll start at the beginning. I met Randy for the first time on Easter Sunday in 1965, yep a long time ago. The guy that lived across the road from my family brought Randy to his family s home for the weekend; both of them were in the Army stationed at Fort Campbell. One of William s sisters yelled at me and wanted to show me something, for the life of me I can t remember what it was, but that was the first time I was introduced to Randy. He kept coming back to visit William s family even when William didn t. I didn t know it at the time but my Dad had met Randy the night before I did. My Dad was a policeman and he had stopped him for running a stop sign. Dad didn t give him a ticket, so no harm there. We dated about one and half years and then got married in North Carolina at his Mom and Dad s home. We had to go back to Fort Campbell the next day to our little house trailer, I had never seen it, Randy had found it and rented it before we left to get married. It was very small but big enough for two people in love. We married in October 1966 and he got out of the Army in May 1967, we moved to North Carolina for a little while and then returned to Tennessee. He started working at a little service station and I went back to work at Park Sherman Industries where I worked before we married. Then they had an opening at the Police Department, Randy got the job and worked with my Dad. That was the beginning of his love for police work and it didn t bother me, after all I grew up with a policeman. In 1969 Randy went to the Police Academy and I got pregnant with Lorenda; he did come home on weekends, Ha!! Randy went to the Rutherford County Sherriff s Dept in Sept.1970 as a deputy sheriff. In 1973 he became one of the two first detectives ever at the Sherriff s Dept in Rutherford County. In 1974 we had our second daughter, Brandie. In January of 1974 Randy was asked to become the first ever Criminal Investigator for the District Attorney General s Office; he retired from that position in April After retirement he bought his first Gold Wing and joined GWRRA. I worked at Freedman s Army-Navy Store just off the square for ten years. A friend of mine who owned The Flower Center asked if I would help her for Valentines. What was supposed to be a part time job turned into full time, I worked there for three years. I was delivering flowers to Jennie Dotson at her home for Riverdale High School s homecoming, Mr. Guy Dotson, Randy s boss, told me he needed to talk to me. He asked if I would be interested in a job with the District Attorney s Office in the Child Support Division. Well, I took that job and retired as Administrator of the District Attorney s Child Support Office in May 2002 and became a GWRRA member. We have three beautiful grandchildren, they are all grown now, Graison just graduated high school, going to UT Knoxville, and Raigan is at MTSU in nursing with a year left and Dalton graduated from Western Kentucky University two years ago and has a great job in Brentwood. Randy and I have enjoyed retirement to the fullest! We have traveled all US states except Alaska, I keep working on that one but Randy is not convinced. We love all our friends in Chapter E and we re so glad that our life has brought us to this point!
