1 Wings Around Nashville News Volume 26: Number 4 GWRRA Region N Chapter TN-A April 2018 Troy & Vickie Hurt Senior Chapter Directors Chapter TN-A, Nashville Tennessee Middle Tennessee Assistant District Directors Folks, it is that time of year already. We know everyone is looking forward to a FUN weekend. Chapter A will be in the Banner Contest and the Mascot Contest. We want to thank Judy and Terry for working on these two things for our Chapter. Also Mrs. Emma and Mrs. Wink will be in the talent show, so let s go and support these ladies. Again this year Chapter A will be doing security on Thursday, April 12, and Chapter C will be taking care of Friday. We are still working on another Chapter to take care of Saturday. Please let us know when you are planning on leaving for the Rally. As of now we will be leaving around 10 am on Wednesday, because Vickie will work a half day. We just ask that everyone ride safely. On March 22nd there were nine of us who went to Bellacino's in Lebanon for pizza. Tim and Julie braved the cold weather and rode the trike. Julie said they were crazy. (Not a word from us, just saying, LOL.) Then on March 24, I visited with Chapter H in Franklin and Frank did a great job! Also there was a new fellow there checking them out. After all the fun at Spring Fling don't forget May 5th where there will be a picnic at Hillenglade Hope and Healing Ranch. Remember Mrs. Wink needs a head count on April 1st to prepare the food. There will be live music, games, horse rides, and food. The cost is free, so we hope to have a great turnout for this event. There will more info at tonight's gathering. At some of the other gatherings we got some flyers on some upcoming rides. March 24th the Rolling Thunder will have a Fish Fry and Poker Run. It will take place at Bumpus Harley Davidson in Murfreesboro. Registration starts at 8 am first bike out at 9:30 am, the ride will be going to Bumpus Harley Davidson in Lynchburg. (Well, we know they had a good time, but that date has passed.) This past month Chapter A has been doing some visiting of other Chapters. March 10 there were five who went to Chapter L, and five went to E. Pleasant Chapter A had a dinner ride March 17 to Campione s in Gallatin. After we ate, Steve and Karen led us to visit with Chapter S. In all my 25 years being in GWRRA something happend for a first time. When we got to the gathering, Chapter Director Grant told me that the restaurant was full and had no room for us. So we got back on our bikes and rode down the road to a church where we held the meeting on the front porch of Pleasant Valley Church. A great place to hold a gathering, folks. Valley Church Cottontown TN Then on April 26th the 4th Annual Sexual Assault Awareness Ride will take place, for more info on this ride please call Jason Randolph (This is all the info we have on this ride.) Remember Chapter A has a ride on April 7th to Arrington Vineyards. Paul and Sally will be leading this ride. More info at tonight's gathering. 3 Wing News Around Nashville Page 3 April 2018 quiz Time Spring is here, sort of. As we turn our thoughts to taking a few road trips, we have gone over the checklist for the motorcycle to make sure it is in tip top shape; in other words ready to ride. We have gone to our doctor and have a clean bill of health so WE are ready to ride as well. Spring has almost sprung so let s start riding. WAIT! There are a few things we might want to pack or hide somewhere on the bike. You might want to include: Microfiber cloth (like from Wink) Zip ties Duct tape Bungee cords Tool kit Tire repair kit Air pressure gauge Medical information ( including next of kin) First Aid kit Flashlight Cell phone charger Spare key Baby wipes or Lysol wipes Gallon zip lock freezer bags Baseball cap Simple rain gear Water and snacks Items 2 and 3 are considered necessities if you watch MacGyver! All of these items will help make life a little better if you should breakdown or have a mishap. I know it seems like a lot to pack, but I m sure we carry most of it in our bikes already. We just want to make sure the items are in good shape and not out of date! By the way, while looking for a place to hide that spare key, you might want to stash some cash with the key. The extra cash just might make a bad day a little brighter. Ride safe. 4 Wing News Around Nashville Page 4 April 2018 By Sally Tampien EVERY MEMBER IS IMPORTANT We have been involved with GWRRA for 10 years now and have seen many changes transpire. Our association with Chapter A has been since The members greeted us warmly when we joined, and soon we found ourselves entrenched with all of the activities of the Chapter. During our tenure we have lost many wonderful people. At one time almost every member rode either their two or three wheeled beautiful motorcycles. As time has passed some of the people have not had a riding partner. But some of the members have taken the single members on their backseat to keep the memory of motorcycle riding alive. As we go on either a short, long or overnight rides having a four wheeled vehicle with us is important and enjoyable (especially in inclement weather). I have had the opportunity of riding in a vehicle following the beautiful and bright tail lights. Laughter and great fellowship abounds in these vehicles. As this riding season approaches, let s promote at least one 4 wheeled vehicle to go with us on our rides. Whether we ride on 2, 3 or 4 wheels, participating on chapter rides is why we are here. See ya down the road, Paul and Sally Tampien, ACD 2018 Comedy (of Errors) at the Playhouse By Vickie Hurt Our Gold Wing family is full of very talented people. So when Debbie and Andrew Smith, Directors from Chapter L, invited us to watch them at the Encore Theater we jumped at the chance to see them in their performance. We were joined by Wink Rager, Emma Hurley and Jan and Dennis Peterson. The name of the play was Dearly Departed, a comedy. The theater is small, so when we arrived we had to seat in two different rows. Jan, Dennis, myself and Troy sat in the row right behind Emma and Wink. When the play began the lights went out and it was dark, I mean dark! Now to remind you this is a Friday and I have worked all week long, After getting up every day of the week at 3:15a.m. to go to work, well, by Friday my body wants to fall asleep early. I tried so hard to stay awake, but when the lights went off my eyes went shut! I felt really bad. I didn't want Andrew and Debbie to think I wasn't interested in their play, but I could not stay awake. Dennis was sitting next to me on my right side and Troy on my left. I was in a good deep sleep and then all of a sudden I feel someone touching my right leg. I started waking up but didn't think much about it at first. As it continued I realized the touching was still going on and it was my right leg... Dennis's side! Oh My Gosh! Remember it was pitch dark in the theater and I'm thinking "Does Dennis know that he has my leg instead of Jan's?" At that moment there was a scene in the play that had some lighting. I turned around and looked at Dennis. He must have known what I was thinking because he started pointing at Mrs. Wink and saying.. Wink wants you! Wink wants you! Wink was trying to get my attention to ask me when Debbie was going to be on stage. Little did the people on stage know, but we had our own comedy going on in the audience! Once this happened my sleepiness was over. Andrew and Debbie did an awesome job, if you ever get a chance to see them perform, please do! You will enjoy it! Vickie

5 Wing News Around Nashville Page 5 April 2018 by Susan Cox Memphis Jimmy and I met through a friend. I needed work done on my car and he knew how to do it. Or at least the parts I would need. I met his Dad while I was underneath the car putting on the water pump. His Dad asked why I was doing it and Jimmy said "It's her car". We stayed at his parents for few months, but then I found us an apartment and moved our stuff. I called his dispatcher and asked him to have Jimmy call me when he got in so I could tell him where he lived. His choice was to stay or move his stuff back to his Mom s. We were sitting in his big truck at the brewery, where he was loading, one night and he asked if I would like to go to Hawaii for a honeymoon. Of course I said Yes. However the closest I have gotten was the luau at Sea World years later. We snagged the preacher that lived next door to his parents and married on Tuesday April 1, We figured what better day for two fools to get married. We thought about just running off to the Justice of the Peace and let everybody wonder, but his Mom was having none of that. We honeymooned in East TN (notice that was the opposite direction from Hawaii), came home and started married life. In January 1987 I got downsized from my job at Holiday Inn and in May found out we were expanding. Jimmy was in Queens when he called home, and I said "Hello Daddy". Kinda freaked him out. December 5 th Christopher Howard was born. In the spring of 89 we moved, back home for me, to Madison and Jimmy started to work for Exxon. We bought our 1st, house in September. Then on July 29,1990 Timothy Alvin was born. For the next while, it was growing boys, vacations, baseball, scouts and family time. Then I went to work at Fazoli's in Jimmy went to work for Pat Salmon & Sons in Life moved on and the boys grew up. In 2005 we rented a Goldwing and were hooked. However Jimmy BOUGHT an FJR A "not me" kinda bike, even with the ugly backrest. We got our 1st Goldwing the next year. A black cherry red, and off we went. If the weather was good, we were GONE. Jimmy went looking for some folks to ride with and stumbled upon a group of wonderfully crazy people who like to ride as much as we did. And they liked us, welcomed us with open arms and we became part of the TN Chapter A Family. Our circle of friends expanded tremendously. In 2011 we became proud parents of a US Airman when Christopher joined the service. By the way, it's a long ride from Madison to San Antonio, but the back roads can be beautiful. In 2014 Jimmy got his 2nd Goldwing. A blue 1800 he named "The Blue Wolf". We kinda wore the red one out. Halloween 2017 Timothy gave us our grandson Elijah James. Proud grandparents, yaawwee!! Jimmy will have him on the bike as soon as he can figure out how to do it safely. We have had rough patches over the years, including the loss of fathers, friends, and sanity. But we've worked through the hard times, and have also been blessed with numerous great memories, with more of both to come. This week, Sunday, April 1, we will celebrate 32 years of marriage (or at least sharing the same last name.) Just two old fools going through life together and doing the best we can with help from God, Family, and Friends. Be safe, Jimmy and Susan Cox

9 Wing News Around Nashville Page 9 April 2018 ABOUT US AT HILLENGLADE: A Message from Jennifer O'Neill Animals, especially horses, have been my passion since I was a child. They inspired my imagination in books and movies, and when I finally met a horse in real life, we tore like the wind across open fields together, then snuggled in the barn while I shared all my hopes and dreams. It was during those magical times that I discovered what deep healing powers and unconditional love all animals offer us It s their nature. I started working at fifteen to buy a horse of my own, and I ve had the pleasure of their company ever since. From my Equine Breeding Program to showing the A Circuit, caring for my fanciful array of dogs, cats and other fury-four-legged friends has been a life-long commitment. And now, what a pleasure it is to share our HILLENGLADE Farm, as well as all of the animals here, with Veterans, Service Military and their families who have given so much to protect our freedoms! Having been born into a Military family, I personally know about some of the sacrifices our Veterans have made on our behalf. NOW IT S OUR TURN TO GIVE BACK! The invisible enemy that all too often haunts our Warriors after they return home from combat include: ~ Post Traumatic Stress Disorder: We are losing more Service men and women to suicide daily than were killed in Afghanistan and Iraq combined And that does not include our Vietnam Veterans!~ Alienation from friends and family. ~ Difficulty integrating back into society and the workforce. ~ Strain within their marriages and families. Scars need to MEND. That s what HILLENGLADE is all about! IMAGINE being able to offer our Veterans and those actively serving in all Branches of our Armed Forces, time away in the country to enjoy the therapeutic wonder of horses, pony rides, exhibitions, music, shared meals, games and team sports! Imagine Disneyland with Fur and you ve discovered a day at Hillenglade. A PLACE AND TIME TO UNWIND TOGETHER WELCOME TO HOPE AND HEALING AT HILLENGLADE. Jen xo RaHHH!!! 17 Wing Ding Parking I have been asked about parking for Wing Ding. Thanks to Mark Kohlman for finding out the answer. APPENDIX E Road Captain Course. Please do not paraphrase this communique', but relay it as writen. Thank you for helping me get this word out. Gary, as a vendor, I have been in touch with Suzanne Montee, the event coordinator for Wing Ding, with KKT events. I asked her about whether there would be parking at Chilhowee Park with shuttle buses like 7 years ago, which was not received well by the membership. Here is her ed response from 1/9/2018: There is a new parking structure downtown for attendees to park. Also, we are utilizing the old Convention Center (beneath the Holiday Inn) for attendee parking, as well as along World's Fair Park. We will not have parking at Chilhowee Park this year with shuttles. We are pleased that the city is making allowances for us that are not typical so that we can come back for Wing Ding. I think this is good news and perhaps should be shared with GWRRA membership. I will be sharing this info with members as I travel this year to other district rallies. Mark Kohlman motorcycleflagstore.com Charlie & Pam Huffman our MFA Coordinators will be conducting an MFA Recertification Class at Spring Fling this year. It will be on Friday April 13 at the Ramada Convention Center. Class will start at 8:00 AM The cost is $25.00 per person. They can accommodate 24 students in this class. You can register at Spring Fling, or to reserve a place send a to Charlie and Pam at huffmanpam26@gmail.com. Thank you Gary Hamilton There has been much concern expressed, over the last couple of months, about District or Chapter choices to fill the Ride Coordinator position not meeting all of the selection criteria. There is also some expressed belief that these positions cannot be filled unless the candidate meets all of the position criteria at the time of appointment. This is a new Officer position for the Rider Education Program. As such, we are more than willing to allow a little flexibility with the appointments of suitable candidates. The MOU allows for a brief period of probation, normally six months, to allow appointees the opportunity to fully comply with the requirements of the office being occupied. In the case of the Ride Coordinators, this probationary period may be used to obtain a certification as a Road Captain or attain the required level in the Rider Education Level's Program. Districts are beginning to plan, or have already scheduled, training events that may include a Road Captain Course as part of the curriculum. Districts with a yearlong riding season have a better chance of successfully providing the proper Road Captain Course training than those Districts with shorter riding seasons. The proper presentation of a Road Captain Course occurs within a twenty-four hour period. This means that the classroom and road portions of the course should be accomplished within the same day. It is acceptable to present the classroom portion one evening and the road portion the next morning. What is not acceptable is presenting the classroom portion at a scheduled training event and not having the road portion scheduled until sometime in the future. When circumstances preclude having the classroom and road portions of the Road Captain Course run concurrently, it is suggested that the course be re-scheduled. Designation as a Road Captain or Co-Road Captain will only be given to those Members whom have successfully completed a properly presented Road Captain Course. District Educators and University Coordinators must ensure that all GWRRA specific training is provided in an approved manner following approved procedures. Tim & Anna Grimes
