National Region N Tennessee District Chapter H Harpeth Wings Chapter H Franklin, Tennessee We eat at 9:00 am, meet at 10:00 am at Shoney s Restaurant, Hwy 96 just west of I-65 in Franklin. 4 th Saturday of each month. Come join us. TNChapterH Volume 9 Number 7 July 2016 Director s Corner Gold Wing Road Riders Association (GWRRA) Friends for Fun, Safety and Knowledge The Chapter H Couple of the Year, which one half of which is also the newsletter editor, have plans for the month of July. I was asked to submit my article a little early to facilitate getting the newsletter out in a timely manner. We had a good meeting in June. Afterwards we rode to Lynchburg, TN. They happened to have Frontier Day going on, which made parking a little more difficult than normal, but we managed. It was a hot day and a couple of the co-riders got a little over heated. This is a good reminder that we need to take plenty of breaks and watch Will & Thu Horsley Chapter H Directors willchapterh@gmail.com our co-riders. We looked in a couple of stores, had samples of the chocolates and had a good meal at one of the restaurants before returning to the Franklin area. Page 1

For the month of July, we plan to continue visiting a couple chapters to give them support. We will try to get at least one that we haven't been to before. Don t forget our July meeting on the 23rd. Hope to see everyone there. Have a safe ride. 5 Obligatory stop at Deal s Gap. A reminder why we need to be careful and ride within our limits. Here we are waiting while the last of the emergency vehicles move after picking up a rider who went off the road and had to be transported by ambulance. Don t have any further details as to his condition. Page 5

RIDER EDUCATION This article was designed for 4-wheelers but it pertains just as well to those of us on 2 or 3 wheels. These are admonitions we constantly hear but all too often we tend to ignore them. Read and heed: Do You Consider These When Getting Behind the Wheel? We've all been told countless times not to drink and drive, drive when we're tired or use our cell phones when we're at the wheel, but have you ever considered some of the less obvious bad driving habits that you may have? If the answer is no, then allow me to bring them into your awareness. Here are 15 less obvious bad driving habits that all of us really should avoid getting into: 1. Driving too fast for the road conditions If it starts to rain, or the road you re on is slick or icy, don t rely on your vehicle s stability and safety systems to keep you on the road they are fallible when pushed beyond their limits too. Do the sensible thing and slow down to a speed that is appropriate for the road conditions. Also keep in mind that 24% of all road accidents in the US occur due to adverse weather and/or road conditions. 2. Drafting tractor trailers Okay, so you dreamed of being a NASCAR driver in your youth, but life didn t turn out the way you imagined. If you re behind a tractor trailer on the highway, don t be tempted into doing any drafting maneuvers to save fuel or for any other reason, as this will not allow you enough time to brake in the event that the driver has to slam on his brakes. The bottom of a trailer and the height of your car s hood provide the ideal recipe for decapitation 3. Failure to yield the right of way Don t be that driver who always has to go first, especially when you re supposed to yield the right of way. In fact, this kind of bad driving habit is the leading cause of accidents among drivers over 70. Another part of failure to yield is running stop signs and red lights in built-up areas. Other drivers expect an intersection to be clear when their light turns green. 4. Driving fast or too slow for the road type While you often hear about speeding and the grave consequences (no pun intended) that can ensue if you do have an accident, driving in the outside lane of a highway at 40mph is just as unacceptable. Staying within 10mph of a road s stated speed limit is the way to go, drastically reducing the risk of an accident for yourself and everyone around you. 5. Skipping the queue Page 6

Having to deal with a long queue of cars is frustrating for everyone that s stuck in one, including you. With that being said, it s never a good idea to just overtake everyone and then barge your way in. If you re on the receiving end of someone s rudeness and impatience, be the bigger person and let them sneak in in front of you. That s a way better outcome than causing a multi-car pileup, isn t it? 6. Eating while driving The majority of us have been guilty of this one in the past after grabbing a double cheeseburger at the drive-through, but the truth is that having one hand off the wheel so you can bite into whichever tasty morsel has taken your fancy is a distraction. Both of your hands are best left on your car s steering wheel when you re driving. 7. Doing makeup while driving Ladies, this one s for you. While we totally appreciate you for continuously putting your best foot forward, it would probably be a wise move on your behalf if you kept at least one eye on the road. Think about it to apply mascara, for instance, you need to squint with one eye and use the other to look at what you re doing in your car s visor mirror. We d rather have you around with a little less makeup on than not have you around at all. 8. Rubbernecking There s no denying that human beings are curious creatures. If there s an accident on the road you re driving on, you d undoubtedly be inclined to look to see what has happened, especially if it looks like multiple cars are involved. Before you do rubberneck, however, think about whether there are cars behind you, and whether you could continue contributing to the mayhem in your immediate vicinity. 9. Not checking tire pressures An incredibly easy thing to neglect could result in a big, unnecessary accident, and we re sure you don t want that. A car that has different pressure levels in its four wheels could be prone to ill handling. If you get it wrong going around a particularly tricky corner, you know what the result can be. What s more is that incorrect tire pressures will harm your car s gas mileage and cause uneven tire wear. 10. Trying to make a turn at the last second If you ve just realized that you ve only got a few seconds to swerve and make it onto the correct highway exit, then resist the temptation and get off at the next one. While doing so will save you time, have you asked yourself what could happen if you misjudge your swerve? Cars and concrete walls are not good bedfellows, and you shouldn t be the one to challenge the theory. 11. Accelerating through yellow lights Although you might want to see if you can beat the yellow light before it turns red, you re better off just sitting back and waiting for it to go green. Consider the fact that different traffic lights have different time intervals to one another, meaning that you could be fooled into thinking you can make it past clearly when in reality you can t. Page 7

12. Not checking blind spots It s very easy to make an assumption that there aren t any cars alongside you, but assumptions can always be wrong. Couple a good look in your wing mirror with a quick glance over your shoulder to ensure that the coast is completely clear before you switch lanes. 13. Improper merging You may think you re being polite by waiting for a gap when trying to merge onto a freeway or highway, but what you re really doing is holding up all the cars that are behind you. On the other hand, resist the urge to hurriedly try and make it into a perceived gap it might not be big enough. Treat merging as if it was a delicate balancing act that needs finesse to get it right. 14. Cutting people off Being late heading out to work or an appointment is never a good situation to be in, but that doesn t mean you should make it worse by trying to make up time weaving through heavy traffic. If you do, you re running the risk of the car behind you running into you, as well as the risk of slamming into the car ahead of you if you execute the maneuver too quickly. 15. Tailgating Whether you re guilty of doing this or have been on the receiving end of it, tailgating drives both parties involved completely crazy. The person in the car in front gets annoyed at the person in the car behind because of their unwillingness to back off, and vice versa because the person in the car in front just won t speed up. Tailgating can also lead to vindictive pieces of driving, such as brake checking. There should always be a minimum of two seconds distance to each car, both front and back, on any given road. Please be careful out there. On our trip July 2-4 to East Tennessee, we ran across the aftermath of a crash on the Dragon. Don t know the details but we were stopped for about 2-3 minutes while the emergency workers finished clearing the scene. The rider had already been transported to the hospital. We never did know the details. The usual admonition applies here ride within your limits! David Hill Chapter Educator District Directors Message Hello everyone. It seems that June was a busy month in Tennessee. Chapter Q sponsored a ARC/ TRC class in Clarksville. Several chapters from around the state joined in on the training. Joining Q in the class was Chapters G, H and Y. Man was it hot. Chapter Q did a great job in keeping everyone supplied with water and shade. It was great to see all these different chapters coming together and enjoying a training day even in the heat. While on the subject of doing things together Chapter F Morristown hosted a Senior day in Harrogate. They invited other chapters to join in and Chapter A2 came along. Chapter F works with a senior citizens group in Claiborne County. They take senior citizens on a 4 mile bike ride. There were 15 trikes that carried about 63 senior citizens for a bike ride. I was able to attend this year and enjoyed it very much. It was so good to see all the smiling Page 8

faces as they got to ride on a motorcycle. Some of them were in their late 80 s and some did a second ride. After their ride they fed us a great lunch. Great job Chapter F for putting this together, it is good to see chapters work together to promote a positive image for GWRRA. I am looking forward to next year. Chapter T joined Chapter A2 on two Saturday rides. One of the rides we went to Greenville. It has been a while since I traveled the road from Newport to Greenville so I was surprised to find the nice two lane curvy road is now a four lane highway all the way to Green County. We enjoyed visiting the Andrew Johnson museum in historic Greenville and then we had a great lunch at the Farmers Daughter Restaurant. We actually got to meet the farmers daughter. The food was great as usual. I would like to encourage chapters to do things together. I think that it helps bring unity within. Dinner rides, picnics, weekend rides, those type things bring chapters together. Just riding together and having fun. We bought these bikes to ride and have fun. Tennessee hosted two National events in June. One event was held in Pigeon Forge for the new University Training program Lead Like You Ride. The second event was taught in Maryville by Rider Education for the first Add-On Kits Training Program. Congratulations to those attending the class; they are the first to complete the newly developed rider course. Thanks to Kyle, Chuck and Alvin for all their hard work in putting this program together. It is great to see everyone chasing the plaques, however we do need you to let us know when the plaque is almost full, not a text telling us it is full. I try and keep one ready to replace the full plaque but we need to know before the plaque is full. Be sure and let your Assistant Directors know ahead of time so we can get the new plaque to you. The District staff is working hard to make Spring Fling 2017 one of the best yet. We have had one little problem though and it concerns the Masters Breakfast on Saturday morning. When I contacted the restaurant they said the price would be the same for 2017 so we put that on our early flyers. Well a day or so later when we got the contract there was a change in the price, so the actual price for the Masters Breakfast is going to be $ We had already published our registration forms so we had to redo the form to show the new price of the breakfast. Sorry about that but we were doing what they had told us before we got the contract. Our new flyer does show the correct price of $15.00 and there is only seating for 75 people. So if you want to attend the Masters breakfast be sure to register early and we cannot register on site. Now, that brings us to the Hatfield & McCoy Dinner show after closing on Saturday evening. This year our registration form allows you to register and not have to go to a web page or wait until January. So when you register for Spring Fling you can register for the dinner show also. The show can hold up to 700 people and if we get about 500 people registered it will be an exclusive GWRRA show. I know you are going to enjoy this show and dinner. They have made us a great price of $35.00 a person. Lets fill up this show. While on the subject of Spring Fling I would like to remind the members to give us input in the Chapter Director of the Year Award, Audrey Baston Award. We would like to see more input for these awards. Patti and Vickie have worked hard to put together Winter Event. I think it is going to be a good one. We would like to see all our Couples of The Year come and attend and participate. Our Winter Event/Couple of the Year Selection will be on January 14th at the Lane Agri-Park in Murfreesboro, TN. Our theme is Winging In The New Year. James & Jerlene Smithson are stepping down as our District MEC s. They have done a terrific job and we want to thank them for all their hard work. Page 9

Wow the weather has been bad the past few weeks but people are still riding! We have been riding and visiting Chapters as well, it is good to see everyone having fun! We know some people went to the Branson Rally and they had a good time and the main thing was they all had a safe trip. On June 11th Chapter Q held an ARC & TRC, Gary & Alvin went to help with some training, that was one of the hottest weekends I can remember. We went to Chapters E & Z gatherings. Chapter E gave away the gift baskets for St. Jude's they started out with two basket's and they ended up giving away seven way to go Chapter E! At Chapter Z's gathering they have a full house, they two plaques to give away, Chapter Y won the Middle Tennessee Traveling Plaque & Chapter E won the Tennessee Traveling Plaque. On June 12th Chapter L in Lebanon had invited everyone to biker Sunday and we attended this. It was good to see so many people attend and all the different bikes that were there. We have told the Chapters in our area that we would join them on some of their dinner rides, this is a good way to spend time with all the Chapters. So don't be surprised if you see us at one of your Chapter dinner rides. The District has been real busy getting ready for next year's Spring Fling & the Winter Event. We have sent the flyer for Spring Fling out to the Chapter Directors so lets get signed up as early as possible. We are really looking forward to both of these events and please let us know if anyone has ideas. Registration information is now available on the District website. News from our 2016 TN District Couple of the Year Hello everyone, and welcome to SUMMER time. What happened to the Springtime, I think we went from Winter straight to Summer. When traveling across the state of TN you really appreciate Eastern TN with the mountains and valleys. But when it's HOT it's HOT. Now we know that the topic of when it's HOT is to drink lots of water and or Gatorade. So I am not going to preach on that, but will discuss what some forget. And that is what this kind of heat does to our babies. Our motorcycles... Yes that's right OUR BABIES. After all we spend almost what it could cost to raise a child. So when it gets HOT outside and we are riding do we tend to look at our gauges or listen to subtle little noises that would be like a baby that needs attention? Watch for signs of fatigue on our motorcycles. Does that cooling fan sound a bit different? What about that smell of hot coolant? Did you check the overflow bottle and make sure it had been Page 11

flushed and filled to the proper level of coolant? Our motorcycles need to be hydrated properly just like our bodies do and without it well imagine the HEAT you will get when you are stuck waiting on Rescue Plus to come and tow you to a facility and see what Momma says when she is sitting in that HOT sun. Mikki and I have been enjoying our Harley, while the Goldwing is going thru its rebuilding stages. And yes even though the Harley is an "Air Cooled" engine, trust me it gets very very HOT when going slow. So when you all see us at your gathering as we visit and our faces are red as a tomato, we are just enjoying the HEAT. We look forward to seeing everyone that we can at your gatherings and are excited about the upcoming Rallies in and out of the Region. As well as getting ready for the Region COY Selection in November. Thank you, and Remember to Keep Hydrated as well as Keep your Baby Hydrated. Ride Safe and Watch out for those Hazards Leonard & Mikki Costanzo 2016 TN District Couple of the Year Anyone up for a cruise next year (2017)? 13 District Trainer Notes Hot Hot Hot Yes we have had some very hot days early this year, makes you wonder what it will be like in July and August. But the Hot Hot Hot I m talking about is the training that was in Pigeon Forge. Lead like you ride had a great turnout. Those in attendance learned a lot, yes, you can teach old dogs new tricks. The next day several attended the new leadership training. They experienced the new teaching style that GWRRA is introducing to the training programs. I heard some great comments about the new style of teaching designed to add a lot more fun to your learning. Things are really heating up with the new and improved training with GWRRA. Wing Ding this year will be an opportunity for you to experience these new training programs for yourself. Make your plans now to attend some of this training while you are at Wing Ding. School may be out for summer, but not for GWRRA training. Training opportunities will be at each rally you attend and may give you the chance to get out of the heat, sit down and learn something. So when you re attending the rallies and you get Hot Hot Hot, just remember that you can enjoy some AC and learn something at the same time. If your chapter wants to set up training just remember that your district staff is here to help you arrange for instructors, help you advertise, and offer suggestions to make your training day a big success. We want to make sure that the District gets the training they want and need with a good dose of fun thrown in. Now is the time to set up training for this winter when riding is slowed down and the weather is more suited for being inside. Don t forget to start making your plans for some of the other events coming up. Winter Event is always a lot of fun, Spring Fling next year should be fantastic. Watch your and the District website for all the details. Join us as often as you can for the fun. Max and Renee Thomas Tennessee District Trainers Report from Chapter Couple of the Year Early in the morning of July 2, Will & Thu and David & Karen headed off to Chapter O s meeting in Cleveland, TN. Because of the early hour, it was decided that we would not try to ride together but to meet at the Golden Corral in Cleveland, which we did. We were surprised at the turnout since they had no plaques to give out. Chapter A from Ohio turned out in force. I didn t get a count but there must have been almost 20 members who rode 500+ miles to come to the meeting. Turns out that their former Chapter Treasurer had moved to Tennessee and they came down to visit them. After the meeting, Will & Thu and Karen and myself headed off to Sweetwater to meet up with Ed and Reba who had set up the trip. Of course we took the long route back rather than the short route. We left Cleveland and rode on Hwy 64 past Parksville Lake and Lake Ocoee to Hwy 30. We stayed on 30 until we reached Hwy 411. We then headed north and wound around until we reached the Days Inn in Sweetwater where we were to stay for a couple of nights. Total miles for Karen and me was about 250 miles. Page 13

On Sunday, we rode down to Tellico Plains and up and across the Cherohala Parkway. Cherohala, by the way, comes from the combination of Cherokee (National Forest) and Nantahala (National Forest). (Cherokee National Forest is at the Tellico end while Nantahala National Forest is at the Robbinsville end.) After leaving the Cherohala Parkway, we went down hwy 143 and then up hwy 28 to Fontana Dam. After a break in the parking lot overlooking the lake and dam, we went up the highway to the infamous hwy 129, the Tale of the Dragon. We didn t have any problems on the Dragon but someone surely did. We came upon a crash scene probably less than a mile from Deal s Gap. When we reached the scene, the emergency personnel were in the final stages of cleaning up and we didn t have to wait more than two or three minutes. Crashes are all too common on this stretch of road as noted by the tree of shame at Deal s Gap. Total miles today was about miles. On Monday, July 4, we headed back home mostly on highway 30. Ed led us on some other roads once we reached the vicinity of McMinnville. When we reached highway 64, Karen and I left Ed and Will and detoured by Wartrace to see Karen s son, Mike. The weekend was excellent. We had no problems at all. Personally, I expected more traffic than we encountered but overall, we encountered very few of what I would consider crazy drivers. You missed a good ride if you didn t go. The weather was a little warm, but otherwise excellent riding weather. Plan to go on our next extended ride with us. I don t know about Ed and Will, but Karen and I went 684 miles on this ride. David & Karen Hill District Events July 22 & 23 WV District Down Home Reunion Event in Summersville, WV.
